Kate Hudson: ‘Me & my mom Goldie Hawn can see dead people’

Kate Hudson

Kate Hudson is promoting Wish I Was Here (Zach Braff’s Kickstarter movie) in England. The movie is about how Braff’s character (a struggling actor trying to find his own identity) decides to homeschool his two children. Chaos ensues. I haven’t seen the movie, but it sounds like Kate plays the “thankless wife” role. I guess that’s better than her endless stream of romcoms?

Kate visited Alan Carr: Chatty Man. She decided, for whatever reason, to discuss her encounters with the supernatural. Kate says she and her mom, Goldie Hawn, possess the ability to see ghosts. They both see them all the time. Maybe Kate and Goldie found some good stuff to smoke? I don’t know. Kate says she’s witnessed “a ghost of a woman with no face” which was “very creepy.” The clips of this discussion have been yanked from YouTube, but here are some quotes:

“Me and my mom Goldie can see dead people. It is not really seeing, it is feeling a spirit; a fifth energy. I believe in energy. I believe our brains can manifest into visual things. When you see something, you are supposed to tell the energy what year it is and that they don’t belong there. When your brain is freaking out on you, you may have to remind it. Why is being dead funny?”

[From Alan Carr – Chatty Man]

Why is being dead funny?” must come with a context. I’ve never seen a ghost before, but I doubt telling them the year would help. Is that supposed to make the ghost behave rationally and go away? Now, I’ve heard some weird stuff. When my dog died last year, I heard strange “doggie” footsteps that didn’t belong to my other dog. It was probably a case of overactive imagination. Everyone thought I was nuts. At least I didn’t tell the footsteps that it’s 2014. When I got a new dog, the strange noises stopped. Crazy, right?

Here’s Kate at the premiere of Wish I Was Here in London. She’s wearing an Emanuel Ungaro sheer tank with ginormous Ungaro trousers. Her shoes are Saint Laurent although they don’t matter. Those pants swallow everything. Ghost pants.

    Sure you do, Kate.

    • Belle Epoch says:

“You are supposed to tell the energy what year it is…” She has been listening to someone who is full of sh*t. I wonder who is feeding her this stuff? Poor thing is too dumb to realize that time is a meaningless concept if you are “energy.” I do believe in the paranormal, but I don’t believe Kate Hudson has a clue!

      • paranormalgirl says:

if you have an “intelligent haunting,” it won’t CARE what year it is. If you have a residual haunting, it won’t hear you tell it the year. So yeah, what’s the point? In agreement with you, Belle.

      • Petrichor says:

Paranormalgirl: this topic is very interesting to me. Can you explain the difference between intelligent and residual hauntings? Everything I know about the paranormal I learned from Most Haunted. 🙂

    • JenniferJustice says:

Wonder what would happen if she told the ghost a totally random year in the past, like, “Hey ghost! Get out of here. It’s 1702!” Would the ghost totally lose it’s sh!t because he/she thought it was 1875 and now they’ve been told they’ve actually gone BACK in time? Kate should try that just for kicks.

    • thesfsss says:

Goldie sort of looks like a dead person.

    • well ….sorry I replied to you..but I tried to post by my self and It was impossible.I had many stories to tell ,here you have some.1)A few times when I was sleeping I felt a guy trying to rape me I fight the guy for a few times in different days…this day in my sleep I felt a strong ,clear(trasparent guy)but I was able to see his figure kind of underline in black….I was able to see his figure like cristal but the borders underline in black..he was strong trying to open my legs (i was up side-looking to the ceiling)…..i felt the smell of his mouth…i felt his overwelming weight…..I was scare for the first time(remember that I felt this thing before but with different figures(types of men) then I ask for help ..I did ask for Gods help and then the guy dissapear and other other was in front of me,sitting in my room floor …he was calm and relax….then I look at him I knew he was a dead person ..I saw in a mental picture the way he died…then I ask him who was him..he smile and told that ” you ask for help right? Im here to help you”…I did ask him if he was dead(because I already knew it) and tried to ignore my answer….I insisted but he told not to ask that question ..he was unable to answer me……2)sometimes at night I can hear people kind of a low volume but many of them talking….I ignore them…..well this are a few stories.

      • Everyone in here reading this:s” Sorry for my bad english in my previous post,my first language is Spanish…. My stories are in the past so all my verbs should be in past form or sentences but Im sure I wrote them wrong…thanks for your understanding…I did try my best to tell my stories….Sorry again…,PSD

  2. Zandy says:

After we moved into our new home I could hear footsteps upstairs every night! The house belong to an old couple after the husband died, his wife went to a care home. 6 months later i read in the newspaper that the wife has passed away and the footsteps i heard every night in my house have stopped!

    • zan says:

      woaw I believe you!
We have a chalet and the couple living there before passed away in the house. Almost everyday we hear weird cracking as if someone was walking around the house upstairs. But it’s never really scary, we don’t feel any bad energy , they were nice happy people

    • Erinn says:

Aww… he was looking for his wifeeeee.
I’m bad for stuff like this. I come from a really superstitious family. I’ve had an aunt who’s a very serious person tell me enough stories to give me nightmares. She’s not the kind of person to make it up. Mom’s whole family has had weird paranormal experiences.

We bought a house last year. The husband had died of cancer – not sure if he passed in the house or in hospital, but I’ve had multiple weird things happening. My husband makes fun of me. But he was away hunting, and one night it was really cold, and I was too creeped out to go make a fire in the wood stove, or walk around the house to turn the heat on. I woke up in the morning and the house was a perfect temperature. The heaters were all set to off, and heat had been coming out of them for some time. Another time, there was a light on in a room we don’t use. The electrical is fine in the house, we’ve had a couple family members who are electricians check it, and the house is only about 35-40.

      • Liv says:

I think many paranormal encounters can be explained logical, but I still believe in experiences like you all told us. I just hope there are only good spirits, but it’s probably how everything in life works – where there is light, there’s darkness.

      • Nicolette says:

Erinn I’ve had many experiences in my life and I am a believer. @Liv has a point in saying many things do have a logical explanation, but it’s that percentage that don’t that intrigue me. I know the things I’ve seen, experienced and felt and to this day can’t explain them.

      • Erinn says:

I agree, ladies. Most of the time, I just brush stuff off. I also happened to read the obituary for the man who passed away – a few days after I thought I heard music coming from our basement. He apparently collected vinyl records and loved music. We actually kind of know the mans son – he’s our age, but only in a ‘Oh, that’s so and so’s dad’ kind of way. Everything about his obit was saying what a happy, humorous guy he was, so I feel pretty content. Most creepy things, I just chalk up to the cat. But this guy would have been just a bit older than our own fathers’ so, on the off chance he’s still hanging around the place, it’s kind of comforting. We also have his cat – his wife left the cat with us. And there’s times that that cat is just being the weirdest – even on cat terms. So who knows. I do have family members with much creepier, sinister kinds of stories, so I’m cool with mine if it was a haunting.

I’m the kind of person who tends to get really strong vibes from a place before I hear if it’s had some creepy issues or not. But I never got a bad vibe from our house, so I suppose that’s always a good sign. I’ve been in homes where I just feel the need to get out, and then hear that there is some possible activity in them afterwards. Who knows. Maybe some people are more sensitive, or maybe it’s just a case of some kind of weird magnetic fields or something affecting people. I am a believer though. But would love to hear things debunked just as much 🙂

      • Pandy says:

Erinn – very sweet that you kept the kitty.

      • Erinn says:

Pandy- I swear it is living the high life as well. That cat has – in the year that we’ve had her- become the most demanding, spoiled brat I’ve ever seen in a pet haha. She honestly wakes me up every morning for food. If you take a second and look away while eating, she will attempt to swipe your food, she’ll wait for me to carry her around, and has decided my neck is the best place in the house to sleep. Luckily, she’s light. I also sneak her an awful lot of chicken. I felt bad that she was 14 when she got ditched. So she’s now the ‘house manager’.

      • yariettt says:

        Slow clap for Erinn.

      • Linda says:

Erinn: It is great that you took the cat but I would worry because your husband is a hunter and he apparently doesn’t have a problem with inflicting paralyzing fear, followed by intense pain, and ultimately death, on another living creature. Also – who are you sneaking the cat’s chicken from? I’d keep an eye on the kitties – just saying.

    • ElleV says:

My knee jerk reaction to stuff like this is to call bullshit… and then feel foolish five seconds later when I remember all my own weird experiences.
One the weirdest happened in my childhood home. I would sleep with my bedroom door open and often heard typing from the dark, empty study across the way. It didn’t bother me, so I’d forget about it by morning.
My sister brought up the noise after I moved out (she couldn’t see into the study, so previously she had assumed it was me). One time she also heard someone pacing in the room when she was home alone, called the cops and ran into the front yard. They couldn’t find evidence that anyone had been there – my dad’s tax stuff spread out on the floor was undisturbed, and all the doors and windows in the house were still locked from inside. We didn’t put two and two together until later, but she thinks the noises were related.
Has anyone else noticed these things seem to happen more when teenage girls are around? I mostly experienced stuff during my teens, and neither my sister or I heard the typing after she entered her 20s.

      • Roxy says:

During my early teens I would see/hear things in my childhood home, but haven’t had any other experiences after I moved out. It would be interesting to know if age/sex had a part in it.

  3. greenmonster says:

Dear Kate, your career is not a person – but it is pretty dead, that’s right.

    • Brin says:

I thought the same…do they see dead careers?

    • MissTrial says:

      Hilarious greenmonster, hilarious!

Never got the Hudson thing other than nepotism and always found Hawn a bit annoying in her roles. Too cutesy, too ‘something’ all the time.

Re that candid shot of them in the car: Hawn looks good, much better without that fake, goofy stretched-mouth smile she always adopts.

      • Sassy says:

Goldie still has beautiful posture and holds herself like the dancer she was in her youth. She looks good, but almost anyone who doesn’t let themselves get fat in old age can look equally good. She has also had plastic facial surgery.

    • Esmom says:

      Nice one, lol.

    • BooBooLaRue says:

Oh too darn funny! By the by, that last photo pretty much sums the two of them up for me. Harsh.

  4. Indira says:

My dog passed away very recently and I wasn’t in the city when it happened. We had a very special bond and I am still very sad I couldn’t say bye. I have been wishing for my dog to ‘return’ and say bye. The week after he died my neighbour and friend (same person, not two people) swore she saw me walking him, even though I had been sick the whole week and had been in bed. She said she made sure from the window of her house that it was me and not my sister. I also heard growling in or just outside my house one night, which our other dog didn’t respond to. I know these aren’t really seeing things, but I still do wish he would come and say bye. In this case, I want to believe.

    • Brittney B says:

I’m so sorry for your loss. Even if you weren’t there physically, it sounds like you loved your dog so much that he *had* to know he wasn’t really alone at the end.

And I totally empathize with wanting to believe… I think animals already have a level of energy and awareness that we can’t even understand, so if it’s possible to linger in some form, I’d believe in dog ghosts before I believed in people ghosts.

    • crab says:

I had a Siamese cat for 18 years and when she got sick in 2010 we had to put her down! Worse day of my life! Since I need to have pets in my houe we got two Siamese kittens 1 month to the day we put her down! One night a couple of years later I woke up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. I didn’t have any lights on and I saw a shadow of a cat walk by and thought it was one of my two kitties! When I went back to bed both of them were sound asleep on the bed next to my husband! I know I was probably still kinda sleeping but I feel comforted thinking it could have been her!

    • Nicolette says:

We had one of our cats pass away a few years ago. She had a huge sweet tooth and was quite the beggar if you were eating ice cream, pound cake, pudding etc. Our other cat, not so much. Never had an interest. After the other’s passing though she instantly developed that sweet tooth, as though the other were living vicariously through her and she would jump and look over her shoulder as if the other were messing with her from beyond the grave. And there were many times I would be in the kitchen which is where she passed, and would swear she was rubbing against my leg. Looking down assuming it was my surviving kitty, there would be no one there.

    • Bella bella says:

Indira, A friend of mine was devastated when her dog died. Some time afterwards, she nearly died when an air-conditioner fell out of an apartment window. That day when she got home, she lay down on the couch, and had a visitation from her dog, who barked to say hello, then sat by the couch, watching her worriedly but also letting her know that she was okay, comforting her until my friend was able to fall asleep. I totally believe it happened, as she is not a particular believer in that sort of thing.

Maybe yours hasn’t manifested in any way because he knows you are okay and not in any trouble. When you least expect it, he might show up. : )

      • Indira says:

Thanks Bella. That made me cry. It’s a beautiful thought. He always came to me unasked when I needed it most. Even when I was leaving town before he died, he came to me suddenly and licked me as if he knew. Looking back on it, I feel like maybe we did say bye.

    • OTHER RENEE says:

I am so very sorry for your loss. I lost my 2 dogs within a year and was holding them as they were put to sleep. It did help a bit, but I’m still not over it even though I adopted 2 rescue puppies since then. I hope you get the closure you’re looking for.

  5. Dorothy#1 says:

My friend and her son see spirits in their house all the time. Apparently a little boy drowned in their backyard when it used to be farm land. The son is totally freaked out by it and has high anxiety. Super creepy!!

  6. SamiHami says:

Me and my mom? Good Hollywood education there.

I have had a couple of encounters with spirits/ghosts, so I don’t doubt it’s possible (it most definitely is!), I do doubt this twit is having any kind of supernatural experience.

  7. Rubber Ducky says:

If I scroll up and down quickly, those pants are a strobing nightmare.

    And Kate, yeah right. Twit.

  8. Lucy2 says:

I remember seeing our cat out of the corner of my eye after he’d died. I don’t know if it’s just the brain trying to process the loss or what, but it’s interesting how many have had a similar experience.

  9. Kiddo says:

If you want the ghosts to go away, put on Kate Hudson rom-coms. lol If that doesn’t work, wear those pants, they disrupt all kind of electrical signals including neurotransmissions.

  10. Gina says:

Aww come on Kate, you and mama are looking in the mirror. You’re not dead, just a little paleish……your career, that’s another thing….still with the band? Just wondering.

  11. Lee says:

In our last house, built in 1852, we used to hear quite loud footsteps up the stairs and down the hallway outside the bedrooms in the dead of night. In the mornings we would always double-check that no one had been out of bed. We never felt scared or threatened. It was just…odd. And noisy. In a previous century home I used to feel “watched” in the middle of the night, when I was up with my new baby, and that was uncomfortable. Now we live in a newer home, and I quite like it. No weirdness at all.

  12. Beatrice says:

Whoa!! The best way to shop at Whole Foods is going by limo!! PS Those pants are hideous.

  13. MrsBPitt says:

A few nights after my twelve year old nephew died of cancer, his Mom said she woke up in the middle of the night and saw her son standing at the end of her bed and he said “Don’t worry, Mom, I’m okay” I’ve never believed in ghosts or the hereafter, but that made my sister feel so much better….

    • Lee says:

How heartbreaking to lose a child. My condolences to your family. I am happy your sister had a visit. I used to volunteer in hospice, and this is not the first comforting story I’ve heard. There are mysteries that cannot be explained away.

    • Nicolette says:

My God, how sad for you and you sister and please accept my condolences to you both. Whether she truly saw him, and I personally do believe in spirits, as you said it made her feel better and that’s all that matters.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I am so sorry for your tragic loss, and for your sister. I’m glad she had a visit to comfort her. I believe love transcends death in ways we don’t understand.

    • Esmom says:

So sorry for the loss of you precious nephew. I think GNAT truly said it best — gave me chills, actually — when she said love transcends death. I absolutely believe that.

    • BooBooLaRue says:

Am truly sorry for the loss of your nephew MrsBPitt. I hope it gave your sister comfort. My sister gets visitations all the time like that. I only get them once in a while and it goes a long way to comfort me. Bless.

    • HappyMom says:

That is so beautiful. I got chills reading that. Your poor sister-I hope this comforts her.

  14. epiphany says:

Actually, she should have said, “My mom, Goldie Hawn, and I see dead people.’ It’s one thing to be delusional, but please, the grammar!

    • JudyK says:

Glad I read before posting exactly the same thing.

Just going to add that I am so sick of hearing people say, “between her and I,” instead of “between her and ME.” I have yet to hear one single person on any reality show say it correctly. It’s a sure sign of lack of education, and I always wonder how such ignorant people make so much money.

      Rant over.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

      First thing I thought too.

    • MsGoblin says:

      Indeed

  15. Parklife says:

We had to put to sleep my family dog 5 years ago, he was a 17 year old golden retriever who was a much loved member of the family. My mother said a few days after she heard him barking outside in the middle of the night. This happened over a couple of nights that week. I also find it very interesting as another poster said that so many others have had similar situations after their pets have passed.

  16. StormsMama says:

    Her body is TIGHT
She is in amazing shape. Wow

    • Nicolette says:

She looks incredible the past couple of years. Don’t know what she’s doing but it’s working.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I read that after her last baby was born, she did five hours of cardio a day until she was back in shape. Ouch. This may be why I don’t look that way. Lol

  17. decorative item says:

I do believe in this kind of thing, but I don’t believe these two. Here’s what I think really happens. Firstly, they organize “touching the dead” evenings with friends. Next, they hire the most expencive, and lastest, “it” con artist in Hollywood. And, finally, they sit around drinking too much and freak each other out.

    • Inconceivable! says:

I agree with you. These two appear to be the kind that jump on the latest Hollywood/LA thing. And I’m sure a few puffs of Mary Jane help them see dead people.

  18. Chris says:

I dream about people who have died. A close friend of mine died when we were in our early twenties and I dream about him from time to time. But in the dream I always just accept that he’s alive and I never say “But your dead”.

    • MorticiansDoItDeader says:

I just has to euthanize my 14 year old pittie. He had cancer and could no longer walk or control his bowels. We did it in the comfort of our home and I was worried if I had done the right thing. A few nights later I had a dream he was healthy and young again romping around in our backyard. It brought me some peace. I’m not religious but it’s true that energy is neither created not destroyed, so his energy exists somewhere out there. So he will always be with me.

      • Indira says:

I love this thought of his energy being out there. So sorry for your loss. Had to do something similar for my dog a few weeks ago and I wasn’t there to say bye. I understand the hurt. Stay strong!

      • michelle says:

MDID, how were you able to do it in he comfort of your home? My two sweet kitties are years away from needing to think about this, but I often think that if the time comes (and it’s not in their sleep), I would like it to happen here at home and not have to go to the vet. ??

      • get it together says:

Michelle, i know you were asking MorticiansDoItDeader, but just in case I can add my 2 cents. i am so grateful to not have had to use this service yet, but I know my vet personally makes house calls to euthanize terminally ill pets. he believes it helps both human and animal friend with the passing to do it in the warmth and love of the pet’s own home. if your vet doesn’t do this and you’re interested, maybe there is another vet in your area who can provide this.

On another note, everyone’s personal stories on this thread have ben so interesting and touching, i even forgot the original story was about kate.

  19. Kristen says:

My grandfather visited me for a couple of years after he died. I never told anyone about seeing someone standing in front of my bedroom door late at night, but it somehow came up in a conversation with my sister. I told her that I can’t “see”, per se, what this man looks like. But I can tell that he’s broad-shouldered, not terribly tall, and has a cue ball head. She looked at me and said, “Kristen, that’s grandpa,”. I never saw him again after that…

    • JudyK says:

My dad died in 2001, one week before 911.

I had the same experience you had, Kristen, except that I saw him clearly. I had just moved into a new house (70 miles from my parents’ home) a couple of months before his death–a home he never got to see. I had driven to my hometown the morning of his death with lunch prepared, which was his last meal. We had a lovely visit that day, and I showed him pictures of my new house.

A few days after his service and after I had returned home, he also appeared at my bedroom door in the middle of the night. He looked like he did when he was a young man and gave me the broadest, most comforting smile before disappearing.

      • crazymary says:

This made me smile and broke my heart all at once. I’m sorry for your loss.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

        So sweet.

      • KayLastima says:

I had a similar experience with my mother. She had passed about a year prior but showed up in my bedroom doorway in broad daylight, young (about 35), and glowing. She flashed me the biggest, warmest, and most comforting of smiles, then she was gone. My other sibs have not had an experience like this so I feel very fortunate.

      • Kristen says:

@JudyK and KayLastima – Both of your experiences are lovely. And the way in which you shared them conveyed such a feeling of warmth. “Bittersweet” is the most appropriate term I can think of… Thank you for sharing.

  20. Aha says:

Thousands, maybe millions of people see these things all the time, Maybe its time to stop letting skeptics determine if the rest are crazy and just accept it as a natural phenonom and stop demeaning folks with a different perception. Maybe you’re not sure of what you saw or heard, but you’re not (all) crazy).

    • Kristen says:

Oh, I’m crazy. But it’s not “seeing dead people” that proves that! 🙂

    • aenflex says:

      Umm, because science. That’s why.

      • MrsBPitt says:

I think the trauma of a loved one dying, the grief, probably not sleeping or eating well…a lot of things could make us believe we see a recently deceased loved one. And if that comforts a distraught, heartbroken person, I certainly wouldn’t tell them, you couldnt have seen your loved one who died, its not scientific…let people have whatever peace they can get…

      • ScrewStewrat99 says:

Science hasn’t disproved spirits. In fact science states that energy can not be created or destroyed, so who knows what happens to a persons energy when they die. Science doesn’t know.

And I’m not bashing science. I absolutely love science.

      • paranormalgirl says:

Parapsychology is a science. Many paranormal investigators and parapsychologists use a scientific method for their explorations.

      • Mel says:

“I think the trauma of a loved one dying, the grief, probably not sleeping or eating well…a lot of things could make us believe we see a recently deceased loved one.”

Some of the people that grieved the most – myself included – never EVER had any such experience.
Conversely, some of the people from whom I’ve heard about such experiences didn’t even know that the person who “visited” them was dead at the time.

P.S. Thank you to all who shared their stories. It is very interesting – and touching – to read them.

  21. poppy says:

how does me and my mom goldie not see how terrible her mom goldie’s upper lip implant/filler looks?
i hope the ghosts tell her and her mom goldie. and corrects her unpossible bad english.

  22. belladonna says:

My grandparents lived in a very old house that used to be a small farmhouse owned by Mennonites. If you aren’t familiar with them they are a lot like Amish people and dress like them. My grandparents had ten kids so I have a ton of cousins and every time we had a family gathering that little house was packed full of people and people often brought friends or extended family with them. It was not unusual for me to walk into that house and see a bunch of people I didn’t really know in a sea of people I do know. One day I walked in and saw an older man all dressed in a black, dusty suit with a black hat on. He was stood in front of their china cabinet and was smiling at me. He looked around the room as well and people walked past him several times. I took my shoes off and went to say hello but he disappeared in front of my eyes. I kid you not.

  23. Esmom says:

I can’t shade her for this, although I guess I can shade her for her ditzy and inarticulate delivery. When my grandmother died, I heard footsteps in my upstairs hallway when I was working downstairs for about a week or two after her death. During that same time period, at night when I would read to my son before bed, his reading light would flicker a ton. Never flickered prior to that or after about a week after that and nothing was wrong with the bulb. I had a couple similar experiences in my parents’ old house but that was the first time it was connected to a loved one.

  24. Decloo says:

“My mom and I see dead people.”

  25. Decloo says:

I’ve seen dead people I know in crowds or on buses. It’s a pretty regular thing and doesn’t freak me out anymore. My brother-in-law lived in a very old house in Krakow and one night the bedroom door opened, a woman walked in and got in bed with him. She was there a good five minutes before she disappeared.

I’ve never seen dead people or experienced anything like that but one time back in college, me and a bunch of other groupmates slept over at a friends house after doing some school work and I couldn’t sleep. I was sweating like crazy (it was winter) and i just feel hot from inside my body while I look at my groupies and they’re all asleep comfortably. Then I had dreamt about a priest throwing some holy water in a door where a fire is coming out. A month later, we found out that my friend’s apartment complex used to be an orphanage that burned down. I never went back there. Lol. I don’t know if that makes me sensitive to these kind of things because it only happened one time.

When I was 10 years old, our family dog was run over by a drunk driver, which left us completely devastated. We are three sisters, and he was our baby brother, the love of our life, and our constant partner in crime. For several weeks after he passed, my younger sister used to hear him whine and scratch on the kitchen door from outside throughout the night. And I remember she used to cry and beg mother to open the kitchen door and let him in….baby’s cold and scared, he wants to come inside, she would wail.
Its been 20 years now and the memories are still fresh in my mind. I hope and pray that his soul is at peace now.

    Nice grammar skills, Kate.

    She sounds utterly vapid here.

When I was first divorced, I lived in a basement apartment. Not so depressing as it might sound, since it was a walkout basement, and one bedroom and the living room had glass walls (and doors) onto a lovely landscaped, fenced patio. We used the patio doors almost exclusively because they were closer to the parking lot, and only used the basement door to go down the hall to the laundry facility, so kept that door locked constantly. The kids had the bedrooms, and I slept on a fold-out bed in the living room, which was kind of cool, because I had the fireplace. It was a complex with mostly old people, my three kids and one other little girl were the only people under 35 who lived there, most were retired. Not depressing for my kids, either, my son couldn’t walk to school without being offered at least two or three home-baked cookies on the way. Anyway, I woke up one night to see a figure standing over me. It was so classic, the tall hooded figure with no visible face, that I almost laughed. I lay there looking up at it, with no sense of fear at all, and it looked at me, for about five minutes, then faded away. After it was gone, I realized the room was lighter than usual, and when I got out of the bed, found that the dead-bolted door to the lighted basement hallway was standing open, deadbolt still in the locked position.

  30. Leslie says:

Wow. “Me” can see dead people? Did dis girl go to school?

  31. MorticiansDoItDeader says:

I see dead people. They don’t talk back.

  32. HappyMom says:

We have a family story-and we are the most practical, least spiritual people EVER: my great grandparents woke up in the middle of the night and saw his elderly mother standing in their bedroom (she lived miles away on another farm). She came over, touched her son, and then left. They fell back asleep (they were both super groggy when it happened but both saw her.) The next morning they heard that she had died during the night. It’s like she was coming to say good-bye.

  33. Jaded says:

Apropos of nothing, she is startlingly inarticulate. “Me and my mom”….Kate honey, it’s “my mom and I”.

“I believe our brains can manifest into living things….”…what the heckity heck are you trying to say? Your brain IS living matter. If we sense the presence of a spirit being, it’s not our brain sensing it, it’s our psychic energy.

“When your brain is freaking out on you, you may have to remind it. Why is being dead funny?”…Um when you sense or see spirit, your brain doesn’t say to itself…”Brain, this is really funny man!!” and start laughing. Well, yours may but for the majority of us it’s a deeply moving experience.

She and her mother may very well be sensitive to spirit energies but dear Lord do a bit of research before you engage your mouth. I’ve done a lot of study on universal energy, am a certified Reiki Master and Consulting Hypnotist and believe me, she may have the innate ability to sense spirit but doesn’t have the foggiest notion of how to deal with it or articulate it.

  34. Sarah says:

I don’t think Bedhead imagined the doggie footsteps, it sounds as if her beloved pet looked after her until she got another dog to relieve him of his duties.

  35. Granger says:

A friend of mine woke up one night when she was about ten, to the sound of footsteps in the hall outside her bedroom. Her 16-year-old brother stopped outside her door and looked in on her, then walked on down the hall to his bedroom. She fell back to sleep, but was awakened a short time later by the doorbell. It was a police officer, coming to tell her parents that her brother had just been killed in a car accident. She figures his spirit came to check in on her one last time before it slipped away.

  36. Sarah says:

As a kid I never believed in ghosts or anything, but after my mom’s divorce we moved into a home where the previous occupant had died.
I started having strange experiences there, I used to wake up to the sound of a rocking chair creaking in my room, but we didn’t own one at the time. I would often hear fingertips drumming rhythmically on the table.
After that I had several experiences over the years, in many places.
When my grandfather died, he had an aneurism, and was on a ventilator while technically brain dead.
They waited to pull the plug until my family assembled, my mom and uncles were hovering over him at his bedside as he passed. At the moment of his passing, I heard his voice say “Melissa…” trailing off as if he wanted to say more.
My grandfather was brain dead and had been intubated. He was not able to speak , nor did any of my family hovering over him hear his voice.
The only other person who heard his voice was my sister, Melissa. We had been very close to him , particularly her. He was like our father, but they had a very deep bond.
We have both had similar dreams about him visiting us from beyond, so similar it’s hard to believe it’s not him checking on us.

  37. Pabena6 says:

@judyk, just wanted to say that, while I agree w/ you completely about the whole “preposition…I” thing, it unfortunately is NOT just lack of education. I have many educated friends, articulate in all other ways and well read, who get this construction wrong Every. Single. Time. It’s insidious, and I’m worried it’ll eventually be accepted (just as everyone now gets “begs the question” wrong), and I’ve started saying “me” under my breath every time I hear it, just so I don’t accidentally slip sometime when I’m not paying attention. Aargh!

    • JudyK says:

      Yes, you are right.

I’ve noticed it even among college graduates. For some reason, they think saying “between so and so and I” makes them sound smart. Would anyone ever say “between I.” It seems so incredibly simple to me, and I do the same thing you do and mutter “me” under my breath.

  38. Beatrice says:

I have never experienced seeing dead people, but I believe there are people who can. In our family we believe that when someone is dying, a loved one appears to them to ease their fear and help them cross over.

  39. Mel says:

“It was probably a case of overactive imagination.”

That may SOUND “scientific”, but it isn’t – not unless you explain how exactly would “imagination” produce such an effect, and why is it likely in your case (based on precedents). Moreover, it opens a whole new can of worms: namely, how can you tell what ELSE might be a product of your “overactive imagination”? How do you KNOW that you are really seeing/hearing what you see and hear, no matter how mundane it may seem? How do you discern that?

Isn’t it much simpler to admit that we are constitutionally unable, as it were (Bergson surely thought so), of perceiving and interpreting only limited segments of what we call “reality”?
It certainly is the genuinely scientific thing to do.

    • Tastykakes says:

Just wanted to say I love this comment and it’s questions. As a very devout atheist, lover of science and eternal skeptic yet I am still able to still that I have experienced things I cannot yet explain, often in broad daylight after a full night’s rest. Not all these things can be chalked up to a situation of me experiencing a sudden bout of wild imagination while minding my own business going about my day!
      Keep questioning everything! 🙂

I never understood the appeal of Kate Hudson, other than the fact that she’s Goldie Hawn’s daughter (and Kurt Russell’s step-daughter). Everybody thought she was so great in Almost Famous, but c’mon…for the most part she was just playing herself. Idk, I just never got it.

  41. Leek says:

I have nothing to say about Kate/Goldie. They just do nothing for me, however, I agree with the doggie story. Mine died last November and I heard his little dog noises quite often after he passed. I still felt his presence after he was gone for the first couple of months. It was nice. It may have been made up by my subconscious but it helped to let him go slowly.

  42. allheavens says:

Can they see their dead careers?

  43. Dotty says:

“my mom – Goldie” and “fifth energy”….someone needs to meme that, stat.

    • Anne says:

doesn’t she mean a sixth sense?? or is this some other kind of energy i’m not aware of she’s referring to? if so, this definitely needs to be memed, it sounds rather ridiculous

  44. Lauraq says:

Everyone in my family sees ‘dead people’, spirits and stuff. We’re magnets for the paranormal. Sometimes it’s really chill and peaceful, and sometimes it can be frightening. Usually when I see a person who isn’t there, it’s not a ghost or even a spirit, but just a psychological fingerprint…the person WAS there at some point, and for some reason, I’m seeing them there again.
The worst was when I moved into my new apartment. I moved in with my ex, but a few days after we moved in I caught him cheating again so I kicked him out. My third night alone, I heard a knock around 1 am…from INSIDE my walk in closet. My cats turned into huge puffballs and ran. After the first knock I kind of just stared at the door, and then a heard another knock. I’m religious, so at that point I decided to read the Bible out loud for awhile….well, as soon as I started reading Psalms, the knock turned into a hardcore pounding. It went on for about ten minutes and then finally stopped. People ask me why I didn’t open the door. Because I’ve seen horror movies and I’ve had experience with the paranormal, and you want a door between you and whatever that is, trust me. It happened every few nights for awhile (I also noticed that when I went into the closet during the day, it was always way colder than the rest of my apartment-often cool enough so I could see my breath). Eventually I told my parents, and my dad cut down a tree on our family ranch and made me a cross. He had his priest bless it, and we hung it on the door. After that the knocking stopped. I still had horrible dreams about being dragged into the closet for a couple years though. I think there was just some really bad energy in that closet.
