Kristen Stewart in a J. Mendel minidress at NYFF premiere: lovely or budget?

Kristen Stewart flew from LA to NYC yesterday so she could attend the New York Film Festival premieres of Camp X-Ray last night and Clouds of Sils Maria tomorrow night. This is a brand new K-Stew! Not really. It’s the same old K-Stew, but she’s now two years removed from The Great Mini-Coopering of 2012. Have people forgiven and forgotten? Is K-Stew ready for a major comeback? My takeaway – as I said in an earlier post today – is that Kristen is well-positioned to have a pretty great awards season. Even if she doesn’t end up with an Oscar nomination for Still Alice (and I doubt she’ll get a nom), she’s still in a position to get great critical buzz and possibly some lower-tier nominations, like a Golden Globe nomination and definitely a Spirit Award nomination.

Anyway, these are photos from last night’s NYFF premiere of Camp X-Ray. Some of the lip-biter h8rs are throwing shade at this film, but I think it looks like an interesting premise and judging solely from the two trailers, it looks like Kristen is doing decent-to-good work. Her outfit last night? J. Mendel Spring 2015 – a red, green and black beaded mini-dress. Kristen’s go-to red carpet look has always been the mini. I wouldn’t mind seeing her change it up significantly, but I have to say… this dress isn’t bad at all. #BringBackSleeves

Kristen wore Louboutins and The Hollywood Reporter’s Instagram account noted that Kristen slipped off the Louboutins shortly after she stood for photos. She apparently worked the press line barefoot.

PS… The more I see of this haircut and dye job, the more I like it.

    Looks dated to me.

    • Birdix says:

That was my first thought too, but I do like the squiggly beads. Something about the length bugs me a little. Maybe a few inches longer or an inch shorter.

    • Kiddo says:

I tried not to hate it, I looked at it in the various photos, but alas, I still hate it. I was trying to think what might improve it, but in the end, I think the only improvement would be a different dress.

      • Betty says:

I actually do like the dress on her. Doubt it would work on everyone, though. I think it really flatters her frame.

      • Kiddo says:

@Betty, I think she has nice gams. Start from there and construct an entirely different mini. The dress, itself, with the awful color combo and styling is sort of old ladyish at the top, and then you get to the bottom where it is almost a micromini. She could do much much better.

      • Bridget says:

I kind of like it, but it would be improved if she showed it off a little better. Suck it in and stick them out, girl.

    • CTgirl says:

The red and mint green color combo is a little jarring. The dress itself is kind of boring and combined with her usual lack of accessories the whole look whispers, “Meh”.

  2. Jane says:

Her face on that poster is unfortunate.

  3. Pixelated says:

Awesome hair. Makes me want to get mine cut like that!
Dress is ok. But girl! Fix your posture!

  4. Hello Kitty says:

She has the posture of a truck driver. When did slouching become the standard?

    • Josefa says:

I feel awkward looking at her. She should really work on it, it makes her proportions look weird.

      • Maraleah says:

I agree. I don’t know if it is the dress or her posture, but she looks not fit. Not fat, just ‘not fit’ as in rounded shoulders and rounded tum, and that’s not what we’re used to from the Hollywood crowd.

  5. Dolce crema says:

I never wear my shoes that loose, d

    • Dolce crema says:

.. Does anyone else do that?
      Is jay Manuel Tyra’s friend?

      • Allen Smithee says:

        Jay Manuel is Tyra’s friend.

        J. Mendel is a fashion house whose head designer is Gilles Mendel.

        The latter designed this dress.

    • Hawkeye says:

I read somewhere that when stylists get boxes of shoes for their clients, they don’t always have the right sizes, so sometimes people wear shoes that don’t fit them. Could it be the case here, but I can’t imagine that it’s comfortable.

      • Dolce crema says:

Tightshoes hurt and loose ones make me clumsy, she must be very graceful to walk in those big shoes

      • CTgirl says:

She’s worth millions and should probably just go ahead and pay for a pair of pointed black pumps that fit. Seriously, walking around in too big shoes just looks so sloppy.

  6. Mike says:

    She’s always terrible

  7. Jen says:

I feel like she’s worn a version of this dress 5 times before.

  8. Linn says:

I like the dress and the hairstyle suits her very well.

    • sullivan says:

I agree. She looks good in the dress and that haircut is perfect for her. I think she’s beautiful, though. With her figure, she can look good in just about anything.

      • mimi says:

I think she looks great too. She has such beautiful features…especially her eyes. And she has the long slender legs needed to pull off a micro mini.

  9. lucy2 says:

I like her hair and kind of like her dress, but she never looks comfortable.

  10. PunkyMomma says:

The awkwardness vibe she gives off in these photos is painfull.

  11. Cate says:

yes she is slouchy and lip-bitey and awkward and she has worn a version of that dress 3 thousand times… something nice, she has beautiful eyes

  12. Josephine says:

I really like the hair and I think the dress could be nice but for the neckline, which is making her look wide. I hate the new drop/shoulder or no shoulder seam style, especially on a structured dress. But I give her points for unique and for wearing color.

The shoes, though – so dated and boring.

  13. Tig says:

Why wear sky high heels if you are that uncomfortable in them? Surely there are lower heel heights that would work for her. And despite being CLs, they are still basic black heels. If you are going to “suffer” for shoes, make sure they are worth it-LOL! There is a happy medium bet 4 in heels and bare feet.

  14. shunty says:

This girl is beautiful. That’s all I have. She gives me hair envy as I’m not blessed in the hair department. Nice skin too.

  15. OriginalTessa says:

She actually has a very pretty smile. I wish she would use it more often. Smiling can be self fulfilling. If you pretend to have fun, you just might actually end up having fun. She should try it.

  16. Josefa says:

I don’t like the hair. It’s too much for too little of a face.

As I’ve said in the threads of every young actress with short hair – average mall girls should stick to average mall hair. Leave the weird do’s to Tilda Swinton.

  17. Meow says:

    A smile would be better.

  18. cat says:

It just doesnt feel like a comfortable look for her. I do not see any charisma in her photographs. Not saying she has to be the prettiest gal on the block or anything like that, and I suppose I should appreciate that she is not just falling in line like so many of the others – who are sometimes almost too *perfect* looking – but I think she needs to find a better look for her.

  19. Veronica says:

She is beautiful, but she always looks so awkward on the red carpet. Tom Ford made a good point that not posing on the carpet is sometimes worse than just hamming it up. I do like this short hair on her, though.

  20. Meow says:

She looks like she doesn’t want to be there.

  21. micki says:

She has looked a lot worse on the red carpet. The dress suits her and I prefer her with short hair. As for “The Scandal” lets ger real, that was 2 years ago. I won’t Google how many cheating scandals happened in HW after that memorable moment but it seem tired to rehash it again. I haven’t changed my opinion-it was a wrong decision on her part and she was old enough to know better but let’s move on with the hope shes wiser now.
I won’t make me see her film though but it’s her acting I can’t give a second chance, not KStew herself.

  22. Koala says:

Hair and makeup look amazing. Love that green smokey eyeshadow. I wish she would stand up straighter, but I say that as a person who knows she has terrible posture. Probably got sick of people telling me to stand up straight after 14 years of ballet. We’re all in this together, Bella.

Edit: I also have to defend her awkwardness on the red carpet. I like to think of myself as a generally happy and life-loving human being, but I have terrible social anxiety and I’m forever awkward. I can’t speak for her, but I do feel for her because I get vibes that KStew as a human is probably a bit socially anxious. I think Kstew the actress is (for the most part) truly in it for the craft of acting rather than the fame– Like Lilo said but no, Lilo, no.

    • Diana B says:

I really like the make up. Sooo pretty.

    • yanina says:

I think that KStew’s fans tend to project their own social anxieties on to her. From what I’ve heard, she does not have anxiety, just lacks manners and/or education.

  23. Corrie says:

    Like it.

  24. Jag says:

Hate the hair. Love the dress from a distance, but not up close. Her legs are gorgeous, as always, and I wish I had her skin. That’s all I’ve got.

  25. maggiegrace says:

She has always had unfortunate legs, imo, and now she’s gotten heavier. Nothing wrong with that, but time to stop with the micro-dresses, they’re not doing her any favors.

    • Lady D says:

You think those legs look unfortunate?

      • Josephine says:

Her legs are thin, but she has absolutely no muscle tone on her legs. So to me, they are just sorta blah. I wouldn’t go so far as unfortunate, but I am always surprised when people think that her legs are nice.

  26. JenniferJustice says:

Why can’t she ever stand up straight? Lock your legs and stop hanging to one side. It’s played, lame, done, stale. Same with the head cock in every single role she plays. I don’t see characters. I see Kristen Stewart. Don’t they have coaches who point out their personal habits, stature, and idiosyncrasies that need to be left at the door?

  27. Jessica says:

    Her makeup is great.

  28. St says:

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart actually have similar careers after Twilight.

They both do indie movies. Every time when it comes out they and their people are trying to push them for awards season. Critics are all like: “Well they are fine. And definitely more better then in Twilight”. Him and her show up to premiers and try to look all: “It might be my Golden ticket. They’ll definitely might nominate me for something. After all – it’s indie movie and they like to award indies”.

Then movie come out in limited release and fail even there. No one cares to see. Awards season is starting and they are absent from any real nominations…. The end. And next year it’s all starting with new indie….

It happened with The Runaways, Welcome to the Rileys, On the Road, This year Kristen and her team will try with Camp X-Ray, Clouds of Sils Maria, Still Alice.
For Pattinson it was Cosmopolis. Now it’s The Rover and Maps to the Stars.
