Taylor Swift: ‘I’m a lot of things. Overtly sexy is not one of them. I’m fine’

FFN_Swift_Hadid_INI_053015_51758373

Here are some photos of Taylor Swift out and about on Friday and Saturday. There were two notable costumes! One ensemble was “sporty” with black high-waisted booty shorts and a crop top, and the second ensemble was “flirty” for an outing with Martha Hunt and Gigi Hadid. Because Taylor Swift wants us to know that even though she has a boyfriend, she’s not going to forget about her lady friends. Which is legitimately a good example to show girls and young women, although because we’re talking about Taylor Swift, I tend to think this is all some sort of scheme.

When Tay covered Maxim’s “Hottest Women” list/cover a few weeks ago, I said that I didn’t really find Taylor sexy or “hot”. I stand by that – she’s got a nice figure, I enjoy seeing what she’s wearing and I’m interested in who she’s dating, but I’ll always have a problem thinking of her as a sexual or sexy person. As it turns out, Swifty sort of has difficulties seeing herself in that way too.

Taylor Swift is leaving the super sexy thing to other pop stars – and she’s completely cool not concerning herself with it. Access Hollywood guest correspondent Scott Evans sat down with the “Bad Blood” singer to chat about her “Welcome to New York” Champion limited edition sneaker for Keds, where he asked the singer about the public’s perception of her image, which is often described as chaste.

“No, that’s a way of people saying I’m just not generally a sexy person. That’s all that is,” Taylor said.

And the 25-year-old is content with her image.

“It’s fine. I’ve accepted it. I’m a lot of things. Overtly sexy is not one of them,” she explained. “I’m fine. I’m fine with all the other things I am.”

Taylor has also embraced being a role model for teens and young people.

“As an artist you should embrace what comes naturally to you, whatever role feels right. I would never encourage an artist to try to and fit in to a role that seemed to be created for them by a bunch of record label guys in suits in a conference room,” she told Access. “I think for me it feels very natural to talk to teenagers and people my age… about feelings and what they’re going through and their insecurities.”

[From Access Hollywood]

She’s right – on this, she’s fine. Not every pop star has to be hyper-sexual and I believe that Taylor would be profoundly uncomfortable if she had to put herself out there like that. I think we should give Taylor credit for how she transitioned into young-adulthood without making an ass out of herself in some kind of “PLEASE SEE ME AS A SEXY POP TART” moment, a la Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Miley Cyrus, etc. Taylor did court the “chaste” image when she was very young, but she transitioned into mostly age-appropriate and normal dating patterns as the years went on, and there were no big moments of “whoa, she wants to be seen as a sexual animal now.” Taylor will probably never have that kind of sexualized pop-tart drama and for that I’m grateful. No, her drama will always be about blind-item songs, publicly maligning Katy Perry, stalking her exes and that sort of thing. And I’m grateful for that too, because at heart, Tay-Tay is a middle school Mean Girl.

Those shorts are so friggen short, we would side eye any other celebrity wearing them. I’m not sure why Taylor gets a pass. She’s defintely trying to be sexy, it’s just not working. Also, those pics where she’s walking with her girlfriends make me cringe. She sure enjoys a good pap stroll.

    • Birdix says:

Because she is lean and doesn’t have suggestive curves. You can pull off so much more with her body type without it seeming risqué.

      • Annie says:

This is silly – body type has zilch to do with sex drive.

      • redhedshoper says:

I agree. I mean I could wear those shorts and look like prostitute because I am 5’3″ and have really curvy thighs. Whereas Taylor has more of a lithe, model physique. I’m quite jealous of her figure actually. It’s hard to pull off some of the new trends at my height. I would love to have long legs for one day.

    • Franca says:

She did Radio 1’s Big Weekend in an outfit that would look very very sexy on anyone else. This is the first time I’ve seen her perform live and I just can’t. The faces that she makes, it’s like watching a karaoke performance done by a 12 year old.

I never had an opinion about Taylor, then I liked her for a while last year, but she’s annoying me now. The pap walks, the collecting model friends – it just seems so very fake. She seems like a nice enough person, but I neve liked people who need to show everyone how awesome they are.

    • Hannah says:

Because she has a small butt and it doesn’t look like it’ll pop out any minute. Sorry but different things work for different body types, we all have to accept that. Especially the KKs

      • perplexed says:

I think she can wear a lot of things that work out better on her type of lean physique than on the Kardashians, but those shorts do also seem weirdly short even on her. I’m not offended by them, but I do think they’re a bit suggestive, at least from the back, and with those shoes.

I don’t think she tries to be overtly sexy but in the pic above and the time she wore the really odd short one-sie, I don’t think she tries not to be sexy at times either. Er, if that makes any sense…

    • Mixtape says:

I think it’s because they are included in an outfit that is otherwise Gap 101. If she paired them with a corset and stilettos, it would be a different story.

    • Otaku Fairy says:

I think that sometimes when women wear things that we automatically associate with sexiness- whether it’s short shorts like this, or red lipstick, or high heels, or fishnets- we easily assume that she’s wearing it because she actively wants you to think she’s sexy, when sometimes in reality women just wear things because they find them cool, fashionable, or pretty.

    • WillowS says:

Yep, she loves those pap walks! It’s so obvious. She’s definitely looking for attention in the first pic-no one rocks that look if they want to go incognito. Those are some very high heels plus she’s already tall to begin with.

    • Chem says:

It’s not good for her image to hang out with models, they outshine her. Gigi is far prettier and taller and so is Karlie. I’m sure she doesn’t want that.

    • goofpuff says:

she wears normal 25 year old clothes and her parts aren’t hanging out like the KK’s. don’t really see what the deal is with the hate. she’s 25. i think she’s just accepted she’s not sex bomb material like other stars her age, just normal sexy in her own way.

  2. Jessica says:

That little boy’s face is priceless!!

  3. Ann says:

Good for her! A lot of the hyper sexual entertainers seem SO needy and desperate for attention.

  4. wiffie says:

Was this exact headline as a story done last week here! Could have sworn it was…

  5. FishBeard says:

The fact that she doesn’t sexually market herself is kinda irrelevant. My problem is that she’s made numerous songs in the past attacking over women for their sexuality, disgustingly so. It’s harmful to teach young girls that they should base their self-worth on the amount of people they’ve had sex with. For all of her so-called new found feminism, it’s ridiculous that she’s never addressed her own projections of misogyny.

  6. Birdix says:

The woman on the left has shoe dentures and office air vent pants.

  7. Kelly says:

Really Tay? Because she was trying VERY hard to be sexy in her new video. And it looked pretty sad, like a tween playing dress up in her college aged sister’s club clothes. She contradicts herself at every turn.

    • Otaku Fairy says:

I don’t think she’s saying she doesn’t EVER try to be a little sexy, or that she’ll never change things up a little bit at times. I think she’s just saying that she generally doesn’t feel like a sexy person or like she’s seen as a sex symbol, and isn’t actively seeking a sex symbol or sexual rebel image. That makes sense. Just because someone’s not actively pursuing either of those images doesn’t mean they never want to be seen as a little sexy or a little edgier at all. Most of the time Taylor doesn’t seem to be going for that, so the one time she makes a video that’s a little bit sexier or edgier than what she normally does, it doesn’t read to me as a complete massive image or message change.

  8. Kiddo says:

She was just manufactured at a different factory than the sexy dolls.

  9. bella says:

something is very off with this woman.
a far cry from a network interview she gave at the beginning of her stardom where she sounded sweet, grounded and truly interested in simply making music.

seems she’s been swept up in the machine of celebrity and is playing the public, right?

    anyway…
she isn’t sexy – not because she isn’t trying to be – she obviously IS.
    truth is she can’t be.
    she simply isn’t…
no matter how she tries to be, she’s an awkward dorky middle schooler.
    that’s her look.
    nothing wrong with it…
    not everyone is sexy.

  10. Cynthia says:

I disagree: I think Taylor feels sexy and wants to be perceived ad sexy. If you look at her styling choices/music videos and her performances on the tour, it’s pretty clear that she wants to portray a sexier image compared to when she was younger and didn’t want people to see her as sexy. I think that’s pretty normal and healthy that coming into adulthood you feel like a sexual human being and you want other people to see it to. I just don’t understand why she insists so much that she doesn’t feel sexy.

    • Meryl says:

Agreed, especially if you look at her new tour footage. She very much wants to be seen as sexy, it’s just that she want’s it to seem effortless – which it clearly isn’t.

    • HH says:

Agree 100%. It’s very clear that Taylor would like to be perceived as sexy, but that image doesn’t work for her in terms of public response. She just doesn’t exude sex appeal. For me, it has nothing to do with her figure. It’s her face. It has a childlike, innocent quality to it (that was heavily played up during her breakthrough years).

      • Annie says:

I’ve always thought she has a total mean gal face! Not innocent at all! Idk if that’s sexy or not.

    • Judy says:

I take her at her word. She didn’t say that she isn’t sexy, she said “overtly sexy”. Like most women she likes being sexy, but not a sex/bomb. She has a lean, svelte body and that shape can be sexy but not sex bomb sexy, if you know what I mean. She’s more a Lauren Bacall type of sexy than a Marilyn Monroe sexy. It’s there, but not in your face.

    • Otaku Fairy says:

” I think that’s pretty normal and healthy that coming into adulthood you feel like a sexual human being and you want other people to see it to.” Yes- especially if you’re just coming into your adulthood and have gotten used to people around you basically feeling like you NEED to be totally wholesome all the time for age-related or other reasons.

I agree, and I’m glad you said that because a lot of times people act like it’s either somehow wrong or bad for young women- or women in general- to have and act on that natural desire at all, (and as if they themselves have never ever ever experienced that) or like there’s something wrong with a woman if she expresses that desire in a way that they don’t personally agree with. We’re not always going to find appealing THE WAY someone else goes about showing that they’re a sexual being and wanting others to notice it, but we also don’t have to act like we’re sooo above them because of it either.

  11. InvaderTak says:

Good Lord she and her bland blond brigade are boring. Even they look bored. Uhg that’s infuriating for some reason.

  12. Anname says:

Is she just confident in herself, or has she passed into smug and arrogant? I admire the way she has handled her success, and seems pretty grounded, but lately I am getting a very “look how cool I am” vibe from her.

  13. perplexed says:

I hate her shoes lately. They never seem to go with what she’s wearing.

  14. Loopy says:

She is so immature and it shows, as a 25 year old I don’t see why she needs to hang out with 17(Lorde) and 19 (Gigi) year olds.

    • Franca says:

Jamie King is 35 and hangs out with them. I think they’re all very very immature, apart from Lorde maybe.

  15. Brittney B says:

Love how your photo selections totally prove your Mean Girls point! That strut belongs in a high school hallway.

  16. Gilda says:

She basically poses for the paparazzi as she leaves her apartment … she’s insanely rich, you’re trying to say she can’t find a place to live where she can avoid paparazzi every time she leaves the house? I like Taylor, i totally back her in how she writes songs about exes and is called a stalker/crazy, yet Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith are romantic/deep/mature. At least she isn’t pretending that she isn’t writing about her exes. I just side eye the constant Taylor Swift’s Famous Friendathon we get bombarded with. Does this chick have any normal friends?

How long before Calvin Harris tires of the circus that surrounds her, one that she encourages…. Harry Styles couldn’t stand it and he is used to hysteria.

    • Elias says:

Harris knew exactly what he was signing up for. He’s an attention whore thirsty for that elusive social awareness she can give him. He dumped his GF of 7 months and took up with good ole’ Swifty in less than two weeks… Two weeks!!! Once his fame has peaked he’ll be gone and Swift will have had her muse for album #6… Good trade……..

  17. Mila says:

i agree with her and its weird because on paper she has everything that would make someone sexy. she is certainly beautiful and i dont think women need to have big curves to be sexy but Taylor is all around not sexual to me.

  18. EN says:

Why do women want to be perceived as sexy anyway? I never quite got it.
If you are perceived as sexy you are basically perceived as an object first, not a person.

    • Otaku Fairy says:

“If you are perceived as sexy you are basically perceived as an object first, not a person.”

Not true at all. You can view someone as sexy or in a sexual way- even have fantasies and very sexual thoughts about them- and still totally view them as a person and respect them as a human being. I’ve done it- I’m sure most of us have done it, regardless of gender. Seeing someone in a sexual way does not require you to treat or view them as subhuman or as less than. If Person A is viewing/treating Person B as less than or an object instead of a person, it’s not because there’s something wrong with Person B as a sexual being, it means there’s something wrong and unhealthy about the way Person A views people.

And it’s not just women who ever want to be seen as sexy either. Gay, bisexual, and yes, even straight men want whoever they’re interested in to see them that way too. It’s just that those aspects of other sexual orientations don’t get as much mainstream attention, and it seems like straight dudes seem a little bit more shy about opening up about that side of themselves than other groups sometimes.

  19. Jonesy says:

“She’s the queen bee – the star, those other two are just her little workers.”

  20. MonicaQ says:

All I can see is a giraffe. It’s awful and horrible but she just reminds me of a giraffe.

  21. LA Juice says:

“kind of “PLEASE SEE ME AS A SEXY POP TART” moment, a la Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Miley Cyrus,”

its funny, I would only ascribe the “please see me as a sexy pop tart” to Miley, who would then laugh at you for doing so. With Britney, it was more like “I am under the control of people who will force me to be a sexy pop tart, to sell records, because i lack talent’. With Xtina it was really more of “I am a woman, I am sexual, I am- in every way your equal or superior, hear me roar, because I am going to explore.”

    • Otaku Fairy says:

I read Miley’s thing not as her trying to say “Look at what a beautiful and seductive pop star I am, gentlemen”, but rather “Hey look at me everyone! Everyone! I’m not going to be this repressed little maiden apologetically shying away from the things I want to do/wear just because others don’t find it wholesome. I’ll do whatever crazy thing I want and make it my selling point. I’m a totally edgy sexual rebel! Madonna/Rihanna 2.0!” Which can still be try hard and totally ridiculous at times, but I do kind of like it about her sometimes and I like some of the things she’s been standing up for. And I admire that she’s not afraid to get gritty and unladylike.

With Britney I kind of interpreted it the same way you did, with an added “My team and I are trying to market me as sexy but still somewhat kid-friendly at the same time, but I don’t know which I’d rather be.”

With Christina I saw it as “I like a little-bit of that Madonna-esque controversy as an artist, and yes we do sometimes like to be sexy for a man, but we also like to be ‘sexy’ for ourselves. I also really do think it’s freeing to not be put in a modesty/good girl box and feel that man or woman, that’s not what I want to be, and people should be able to be totally sexual open. The repressive sexist sh*t sucks.”

  22. Otaku Fairy says:

I like how she got her point across without throwing other women under the bus. It’s a (small, small) sign of maturity that you wouldn’t have expected from the “more-virginal-than-thou” Swifty of 2010/2011. Especially liked this: “As an artist you should embrace what comes naturally to you, whatever role feels right.” That’s a pretty tolerant perspective. I kind of liked her new music video too.

  23. Jane Q. says:

    Oh please. That’s bullshit.

Taylor basically goes out with her butt cheeks showing. She was openly displaying her bolt ons on the Bad Blood video and did you guys see the costumes she’s wearing on her new tour?

The Rihannas and Mileys of the world wouldn’t get away with that crap without being called desperate.

Taylor is trying HARD to be perceived as sexy. The problem is that she’s so boring and contrived that no one is buying.
