Ryan Gosling: ‘I know that I’m with the person I’m supposed to be with’

FFN_Gosling_Mendes_GG_090712_50878757

I will never stop using the turban photos. Just FYI.

Ryan Gosling is currently promoting The Big Short, the true story of how a handful of dudes figured out that the American housing market was going to crash and burn in 2008. Gosling has not been front and center during the promotion, although… no one has. Gosling hasn’t gotten any magazine covers, but neither has Brad Pitt (the producer/star) or Christian Bale or Steve Carrel. This was supposed to be an Oscar-bait movie, but it really doesn’t feel like anyone is pushing it hard. Which is possibly why Gosling is finally giving up some details about what life is like with Eva Mendes and their daughter Esmeralda.

Ryan Gosling is a proud father, partner and, of course, Canuck. “I love being Canadian,” he tells us, adding, “I think growing up in Canada gives you a world perspective that I certainly enjoy.”

The 35-year-old actor recently sat down with Hello! for an exclusive chat about celebrating the holidays with longtime love Eva Mendes and their adorable one-year-old daughter, Esmeralda.

“This will be our first Christmas where [Esmeralda is] sort of taking it all in, so that’s exciting,” gushed the handsome actor, who welcomed his daughter in September 2014. One thing the Notebook star isn’t as excited about is his mother’s choice in holiday tunes. “She’s obsessed with the Hanson Christmas album! No disrespect to Hanson, they’re very talented kids, but I think I’ve heard that record enough. I’m sure it will be on a loop this Christmas as well.”

Fatherhood has come easy for Ryan, who says it’s “not rocket science.” And as much love and devotion as he has for his baby girl, the star is just as besotted with her mom, Eva. “I know that I’m with the person I’m supposed to be with,” he says, adding that the only quality he looks for in a woman is “that she’s Eva Mendes. There’s nothing else I’m looking for.”

[From Hello Canada]

Wow. That’s the most he’s ever said about his girlfriend/partner of more than four years. And I guess he wants to push back on the near-constant rumors that he and Eva are done, that they’re barely co-parenting, that he’s spending a lot of time with Emma Stone. Ryan believes Eva is “the person I’m supposed to be with.” So there you go, Hey Girls. Fatherhood is not rocket science. He loves being a Canadian. He’s supposed to be with Eva. He hates the Hanson Christmas album. Damn, this was a good interview from Gosling.

Gosling will be hosting this weekend’s SNL, and they released a bunch of promos:

“I love being Canadian”…does that mean the Brooklyn accent will be gone soon?

  2. Killalustre says:

Those sound like pre breakup quotes if you ask me.

    • joan says:

      Because longevity means nothing.

Some of the commenters who snark about them being together 4 years with a 1-yr-old baby CAN’T match that.

They mock it cause they can’t have it. They sit in their trailer park and mock the idea of a couple together for FOUR YEARS. Because they’re “a single mom” who couldn’t get someone to spend that much time with them. Or they’re in a longer time period but it doesn’t have the luxury of fame and money, and no one’s praising them to the press, or to anyone else.

A 4-yr marriage is not usually mocked — it’s just that this is a couple who live their life without constant coverage and people don’t get why it works.

  3. Liv says:

He totally lost his appeal for me. I first refused to believe that these two are a real couple because they seem to have no chemistry. Great for them, especially as a family, that they lasted this long, but I’m not buying this person-I’m-supposed-to-be-with-crap. There are many rumours that they had trouble or are done. Maybe he wants to get ahead of something or bury rumours that are going to come up.

    • OrangeCrush says:

      Yes, this. All of it.

    • Chloe says:

So if he doesn’t say anything you think they will break up and if he does say something you also think they will break up.
Every couple in Hollywood has break up rumours a few times a year. Even the ones people accept as perfect together such as brangelina. That stuff doesn’t mean anything most of the time.

      • Liv says:

I just think that they are not this happy couple he wants us to believe and I wonder why he wants to convince us now.

    • Allison says:

I don’t think he’s trying to make us believe anything. Nor did he comment on their relationship as good or bad. Just stating something that’s true to him. He hasn’t shoved it down our throats relentlessly so I see no problem. I think some of you will find something to gripe about regardless. And before you state it yes I know this is celebitchy. But it always amazes me when those who bitch can take the reverse unless it suits their oppinion… Just an observation.

  4. Sara says:

It’s nice to read about happy people enjoying parenthood. Right?

    • Who ARE these people? says:

It is! And I like what he said about her…not breaking her down into traits and qualities, but just being the whole person that she is.

  5. tacos and tv says:

Suddenly I’m jealous. And, never stop using the turban photos!!! They are amazing. 😉

    • Zapp Brannigan says:

Love turbans and I will not apologize for it, I got one for winter and it will have to be prised from my cold, dead glamorous head!

      • ninal says:

I think turbans are normally ridiculous but that Eva has such a pretty face I don’t notice the turban as a result, the bitch.

  6. Bee says:

His face looks strange and somehow less hot these days. Is he wearing makeup in the new photos?

  7. Bridget says:

I completely forgot about those two. She can get kind of weird but so can he so good for them.

I love Ryan Gosling. Yes, he can be a little ridiculous (that accent?) but he’s put together a pretty incredible body of work over the years while somehow avoiding becoming a former child star trainwreck.

    • Kitten says:

Me too. I’ve loved him since Remember The Titans.
      Fantastically talented actor IMO.

      • Bridget says:

I remember him from Breaker High! But then again I was a latch-key kid who would watch crappy tv when I got home from school :). Great actor. I’m actually happy that he’s moved away from “Hey Girl” Ryan.

  8. jugstorecowboy says:

Nice to see this dude again! Parenting a toddler IS easy. It’s the honeymoon period, actually. The difficulty-slope is insidious, though, to the point that I’m pretty sure my nine-year-old has somehow been replaced with an alien. That’s hard!

    • SloaneY says:

Eh. My toddler was not easy. He’s been a lot easier since the age of about 4. But he’s 7 now and I’m starting to think he’s edging into that weird time period where little boys just seem to have no common sense, flailing around and making really dumb decisions.

      • jugstorecowboy says:

Touche, they’re all different. But as my youngest (and easiest by far) edges into toddlerhood I’d like to believe that he will always remain the easiest. Either way, we love them as they come!

Good luck with your boy…I wonder when the common sense will kick in? My girl from above does the same stupid things over and over and over again. At what age do they learn cause and effect?

      • OrangeCrush says:

Oh God… really? I have an almost-two-year-old and I’ve been waiting for the time when I can say he’s getting easier. I have a few more years to go?! I love him, of course, but he is *exhausting.*

    • Micki says:

I can relate completely. My 8-yo is somebody else altogether. Gone is everything we tried to teach. I hope it’s deeply buried and will surface sooner or later but I can’t be sure. It’s so uncool to be polite and conciderate. And the Teen-period hasn’t started yet.
I’m simply trilled what it will bring.

  9. JenB says:

I like Ryan Gosling just fine but have never been a fangirl. But Taran? OHYESPLEASE

  10. ninal says:

They are super attractive as a couple so that kid is gonna be a looker for sure.

    • Sabrine says:

There were pics of the baby out with them at Hallowe’en. She’s an average looking baby, cute of course as most babies are, looks like her father.

      • Amide says:

@Sabine. Agreed. But didn’t Gosling have a nose job?
Seems good looking duos, end up making average looking babies.

  11. Sure Jan says:

I like them as a couple they aren’t the PDA in public to prove to strangers we are happy type of couple. That “I’m with who suppose to be with” line are going to kill those The Notebook shippers dreams.

  12. Catelina says:

Not so subtle message to the diehard Mcgosling shippers?

    • GlimmerBunny says:

Yeah, as a shipper I feel like it was aimed at us (alsthough to be fair I haven’t actively shipped them since he got a kid, it feels sort of mean.)

    • Lou says:

Well he had no choice when Rachel didn’t want a bar of him any more!

  13. Miss V says:

I always got the feeling that she was more into him than he was into her. Reading this interview, it’s clear that’s not the case. I am surprised, but I say good for them. I don’t care for Eva (too many negative stories about her out there), but if they have a happy family, you can’t begrudge them of that. She can’t be that bad if he feels so strongly about her.

And I agree with the people that say he’s lost his hotness. He looks so much older these days.

    • Bridget says:

He was only hot when he was pretty thin. At a normal weight or heavier he’s always been kind of average. I’d guess that he wasn’t that into being the Internet’s boyfriend (really, who would be?) so it’s not like there’s a ton of incentive for him to shape up.

  14. That’s a pretty serious clap back to all of the haters. He not only says he’s sure he is with the woman he is supposed to be with, but then he calls her out by name as the only quality she needs to have is to be her. Pretty serious stuff.

That said, her face has always bothered me and therefore I have an irrational dislike of her turbaned head. I think it’s the arched eyebrow, tons of teeth beauty mark thing.

  15. Lou says:

He always says really OTT things about his female co-stars and when he was with Rachel he was all ‘she’s everything, i can’t describe her in one word’ . I can’t see them lasting but who knows?

    • lobbit says:

I mean this isn’t just his co-star, though. It’s the mother of his child, the woman he’s been with for like five years.

They’ve made a little family together, so I hope they do last.

  16. Wooley says:

He’s just a private person! Not gushing all the time doesn’t mean the feelings arent or weren’t there. It makes some people, myself included, uncomfortable to talk about such personal things.

  17. Jenna's Snark says:

Ryan, Christian and Steve got individual covers of New York magazine and Ryan, Steve and Christian along with the director and the author of the book are on the cover of The Hollywood Reporter plus they did a round table for THR. Brad Pitt has a very small role in the film

  18. WinnieCoopersMom says:

Good for him that he likes her, his life, his choice…I dont care for her. She comes across as an arrogant B*. I know it’s super immature, but I still ‘ship him hard with McAdams. It’s hard to get over that LOL even though he apparently has..I’m still holding on hope that they will end up together. If nothing else, I just want to see Rachel McAdams end up with someone great. She seems lovely.

  19. lobbit says:

Very sweet comment. It sounded sincere without being overly sentimental.

  20. so i heard some grumbles on the turban thing…… SOOOO A LOT OF PLACES AROUND THE WORLD TURBAN OR sometime of scarf/fabric covering on your head is the standard….. and its awesome….. not RIDICULOUS as one would call it…. typically places with POC but ive seen eastern european does turbans/head covering (inserts the russian wood dolls)

matter of fact…. I have an awesome scarf turban on right now

    #unapologeticturbanista4LIFE

  21. kri says:

That. F&cking .Turban. It will never stop being tragically hilarious. She has always been ready for her closeup, Mr. Demille.

  22. CG says:

Is #NoDisrespectToHanson the new #NoDisrespectToBenAffkeck? He’s wrong though — the Hanson Christmas album is awesome!

  23. Tiger says:

At least he is saying some nice things about her now. For a long time it looked like he didn’t want to photographed with her at all, even though it was obvious they were constantly calling the paps.

  24. Cassiekay says:

Ive loved this kid since breaker high

  25. moon says:

Eva is a gorgeous, intelligent older woman. I don’t see what Emma Stone would have on her, except maybe a bigger A-Lister status.

  26. NeoCleo says:

As a couple they just look weird together. However, time has proven his point, I think.

  27. vespernite says:

Boo! I can’t get behind them as a couple. But I can get behind Ryan and Essy being happy, so lets hope for their sake that Eva doesn’t screw it up. (YESSS to the turban pictures, makes me feel slightly better!)

  28. Kell says:

Please MARRY ME Ryan!!!! I would be an amazing wifey. Xoxo
