Saoirse Ronan in pink lace Michael Kors at the SAGs: matronly, twee or both?

I’ve been rooting for Saoirse Ronan to have an amazing red carpet takeover this awards season, but it just hasn’t happened. I defended her choices at the Critics’ Choice and Golden Globes, but there’s nothing to defend here. Saoirse wore this Michael Kors which manages to be both matronly and cloyingly twee. The cut is totally wrong for Ronan (who has a lovely figure), and the too-pale pink worked against her in unexpected ways. Plus, she matched her FROSTED PINK EYESHADOW to the dress. Terrible!!

Claire Danes was another one of my picks for the worst-dressed. And of course she was wearing Stella McCartney. While it’s an utter mystery why Stella would design such an uninspired, nothing dress (hint: Stella is a hack), it’s also a mystery as to why Claire would even choose this. It’s not only an ugly dress, it was super-unflattering too. It did nothing for Claire’s figure and colors were just blah.

Julianna Margulies in Antonio Berardi. It’s an interesting dress but I’m glad that Julianna didn’t make much of an impact sartorially (or any other way). Also: her face looks completely frozen.

Eva Longoria is SO THIRSTY. My God. I mean, she’s usually like that, but it was really extra last night. Eva wore this moss green Julien Macdonald gown which… it looks really cheap, right? And I have no idea why she would choose green, considering her new engagement ring is a ruby. Why not wear red?

wow i LOVE claire danes’ dress- i think its really flattering and looks fresh and clean amongst all the bling and glitz

    • Gina says:

I like it too, she looks classic and refined. I get that it makes her look flat-chested, but then she is flat-chested and there’s nothing wrong with that.

      • Sugar says:

But the fit is so off on her bust. She is naturally flat-chested, which is fine but the bust area is way too large and makes her look deflated. The colors are really good on her, though.

    • HappyMom says:

Yes-I was coming on here to say that I like it and I’m shocked because everything else I’ve ever seen Stella McCartney do has been hideous.

    • Susan says:

I agree. Of all the garbage on this red carpet, Danes is faaaar from the worst offender. Sheesh I’d actually call her one of the best.

    • Carol says:

I agree. Danes was very good

    • Mirka says:

      I agree

  2. ichsi says:

Oh Saoirse… I like her hair though. And I kinda fail to see what’s so bad about Claire’s dress. It’s a bit saggy around the boobs, but she looks like some tall, elegant, blonde surfer siren to me.

    • Locke Lamora says:

I really had high hopes for Saoirse because her style is usually really interesting. But her Globes outfit was bad and this is even worse. Her hair looks good though.
      Claire looks really nice.

    • Rachel says:

I thought she looked amazing. I loved her dress. It made me happy every time they panned to her. It definitely looked better on screen than in stills though. It looks cheap in those pictures. And like a completely different color.

  3. Nev says:

I thought Claire Danes looked really fresh and beautiful.

  4. Miss V says:

None of these looks are even remotely good. Yikes. Saoirse is so pretty, too. Like, why?

  5. taxi says:

Saoirse borrowed a dress from mother -of-the-bride.
Eva is a pretty woman who always goes for a trashy look.

  6. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I think everyone but Eva looks fine. Eva wants you to know she’s not wearing panties. She hopes you’re shocked.

    • Susan says:

Thirsty is the perfect word. As my husband said the other day (and he’s as out of touch with gossip blogs, Hollywood etc as anyone), “why is she STILL a thing?”

      • Mgsota says:

Thank you! I’ve been asking myself the same thing! Why is Eva even there?!? Has she done anything lately?

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Tell him we will let him know when we figure it out.

      • Hazel says:

Eva has her own sitcom now–I think it’s called Telenovela. I think she’s a producer on that show as well. This dress, though, ugh. Makes her look short & wide.

    • Carol says:

      so true LOL

  7. Sarah01 says:

I really like saoirse look. She never overdoes it and looks very elegant. The dress is so pretty and love the colour looks like soft blush on my screen.

  8. CornyBlue says:

It is not the best dress but it is hardly the worst. She looks absolutely beautiful and the colour really suits her pale Irish skin tone. I thought what Longoria was wearing is Balmain but eh bad choice.

  9. Sisi says:

I’m starting to wonder if my meh-ness of al the looks has to do with poor photography. I can barely see Ronan’s dress, all the others have harsh flashes and in the other threads there were also very big differences in light & color, unflattering shadows and lights in the dresses :/ Especially all the red gowns have been messy.
Is this the fault of the photographers, or did the event create poor circumstances for the red carpet or something?

Perhaps I got out of bed on the wrong side today though 🙁

Btw that crewlady behind Julianna has some interesting eyeshadow too…

    • cr says:

The crew lady behind Julianna looks like she was using the makeup artist from iZombie.

Out of all these looks, I like Julianna’s the best. SR’s isn’t bad, it’s just not right. CD’s is boring. Eva’s is a great color but otherwise all wrong.

    • Bridget says:

A lot of the photos have sunlight streaming in odd patterns. It’s washing out some of the dresses and doing weird patches of light on some of them.

  10. Carmen says:

Absolutely love everything about Ronan’s dress. Elegant and understated and it fits her like she was poured into it. Clair Danes dress was a big yawn IMO. Longoria ‘s dress at least stayed on the right side of cheap. I’ve seen in worse.

  11. tracking says:

Eva usually looks good, but this is a big fat no. I like JM’s dress a lot. Meh on the rest.

  12. InvaderTak says:

I think SR is trying to go for a classic, timeless beauty feel and her team read that through hipster vintage rose tinted glasses and that got us this…shift looking thing. A pink and lace dress could be very Edwardian and romantic if done right; and could really separate her from the crowd on a Hollywood red carpet that favors glamour over prettiness (usually). But this isn’t right. Wonder if there was an etsy-fied tea stained option.

  13. Minxx says:

Poor Saoirse, she has a really bad stylist. The dress is not terrible and this shade of pink is flattering on her but she could have done SO much better!
Claire Danes’ dress does nothing for her figure, in fact makes her look even worse (big shoulders, flat everywhere). She looks much better in full skirted dresses. JM’s dress is very nice and flattering. “Winters” look good in white.
Eva Longoria should sit down. She looks desperate here. But it works, she’s in every tabloid, starting with DM.

  14. Zaytabogota says:

Saoirses dress would be lovely on a 70 year old and her makeup on a tween. So wrong. She needs a decent stylist, someone living in this century with functioning eyes, she has so much potential for loveliness and she’s a wonderful actress.

Claire dress is nice enough, not wow on her but not bad either.

Eva, so awful, terrible colour and she’s way too short for that, only a lanky supermodel could work that style.

    • Greenieweenie says:

Sometimes (and this is totally a generalization) I feel like it’s more normal in the UK to just be, like…undone? Maybe it’s some upper crust thing, idk, bc Goop also has that vibe off the red carpet. I just think that a lot of young actresses from the UK look a lot younger than their American counterparts because they’re less “done”.

So all that was to say, Saoirse’s brows! Somebody groom them! And she’d look better with a brighter hair color. She’s a cute girl but she’ll get pigeonholed in these naive types. Carey Mulligan was like that at first too. Just…she needs more personality. More edge (to her look).

      • Holmes says:

Whom are you referring to? None of the actresses mentioned in Zaytabogota’s comment are from the UK.

That being said, women from the UK aren’t “undone”–it’s women from the US who are overdone. I’m sure there are exceptions, but as a general rule, women in the UK (and the rest of Europe as a whole) wear far less makeup than women in the US.

  15. lizzy says:

you guys are being way harsh to Saoirse. she looks great! i agree the dress is too mature for her and her makeup is a little on the nose but it is BEAUTIFULLY tailored. if this dress had v neck or a slit somewhere – it would be perfect. i love the light pink on her and her hair.

  16. Daria Morgendorffer says:

“Eva Longoria is SO THIRSTY. ”

Sums up my thoughts about this woman every single time I see her. I’m not sure how she has managed to stay around this long. I know she has a new show out and I’m not sure how the ratings are doing, but how did she even manage to get that show when she did nothing for like a decade before that?

This woman has always been so incredibly thirsty and unlikable. This is the first time I’m seeing pictures of the back of her dress and all I have to say is that she is ridiculous. I thought the front was bad, but the back really takes the cake. Someone needs to give homegirl some pointers on aging gracefully because she doesn’t have a clue. She’s not 25 anymore and she’s not JLo so she needs to chill.

  17. Classy and Sassy says:

I think the dress looks beautiful on Saoirse!

  18. Nancy says:

I haven’t seen Saorise since Lovely Bones. She is so pretty and grown up. It’s like watching my daughter who will be 15 soon, ah, they grow up so fast. Claire Danes looks just like Angela Chase, she has barely changed in 15 years. Like being in a time capsule today….

  19. Lily says:

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen Saoirse’s dress before this year… like multiple times. Why would you wear a dress somebody else has worn TO AN AWARD SHOW?
Also, if Claire Danes dress was on say, Jennifer Lawrence, I feel like it would be called “modern” and “different” so I kind of disagree.

  20. Prairiegirl says:

Saorise’s dress is too mature for her. She should’ve swapped dresses with Julianne, whose dress was age inappropriate in the other direction.

  21. HK9 says:

The colour of Saoirse dress washes her out. If the dress was in a jewel tone it would look much better. Matronly yes but much better.

  22. Angelica says:

I want to see Helen Mirren in Saoirse’s dress. It would be bomb on her. That is all.

  23. Luciana says:

Claire Danes and Naomi Watts were my favourite looks.

  24. ell says:

i actually really like saoirse’s dress, and this colour is very flattering on her.

  25. AlmondJoy says:

Hmmm I disagree about Eva. I saw her on the red carpet and thought she looked smokin. The cut isn’t that great and neither is the color, but for some reason I think she looks really good in it. Her body is perfection.

Saoirse- I love the earrings and her hair and I’m ok on the dress. Am I correct that her name is pronounced Ser-shuh? Really pretty.

    • Otaku fairy says:

I would have liked Eva’s dress if it were either red (esp. wine red) or black. Maybe even navy blue.

    • SmallTurnip says:

Yes. Ser-shuh is correct. Very pretty name 🙂

    • Mimz says:

I also liked the dress in motion, she looked great, and I’ve seen thirstier stuff on JLO and I love her. I just didn’t like the hair so much. And to whoever that’s hating on Eva, she’s busy being a producer, she executive produces Devious Maids (LOVE that show)
When I saw Saoirse on tv I cringed at first, when I saw the dress, but it goes super well with her personality. Just a pretty girl.

  26. kri says:

Saoirse…no! She is so lovely, but that dress. Oy. She would be stunning in so many colors and cuts. That dress looks like the cotton on an old-style maxi pad. dreadful.

    • khaveman says:

She looks awful from the neck down (her interviews were really good — she is a smart, lovely actress). It’s not a high-profile dress. It’s very boring and underwhelming, and she’s young, so live it up? You don’t have to show a bunch of skin, but this was way too conservative, mediocre fabric and a snooze.

  27. nicegirl says:

I bet darling Selena Gomez would look great in Eva L’s dress. Eva was going for Selena but the look just did not land. Good try though.

  28. Tara says:

I don’t understand the comment that Saoirse’s dress is ill-fitting. To me, it looks perfectly tailored. The color is ok on her too. Also, does anyone know when the edict was delivered that makeup and shoes shouldn’t match clothing, but that jewelry should? I missed all kinds of memos…

  29. Lucy2 says:

Strangely enough I kind of like Claire’s. It’s not great, but far from the worst that designer has inflicted on us.
Saoirse’s is too understated, but better that than desperate, like Eva’s. Wow, is that one unflattering dress! The lines at her hips hit her in the worst possible spot and make her look very boxy and stumpy.

  30. chelsea says:

The naked dress needs to die.

  31. Josefina says:

Love her to death but her red carpet looks always leave much to be desired imo. She looks cute, though.

  32. SmallTurnip says:

I always have such high hopes for Saoirse but alas no!! She continues to disappoint. Which is a shame as she has such a great figure, great legs, great face and amazing skin. So much to work with and yet so much fail.

  33. Anare says:

Saoirse looks beautiful. I really love that dress and she looks so young and fresh. The classic cut of her dress keeps it from being twee. Do not like the Stella McCartney dress. Ick! Eva Longoria is so beautiful and I liked her hair and makeup. I love the color of her dress but you’re right, look cheap, ill fitting, and what is up with zipper on her butt? Awful!

  34. annna says:

I like Claire’s dress. Saoirse always dresses matronly.

  35. raincoaster says:

That Longoria gown is what you’d see if she were someone’s date to a prom in Fort Lauderdale on spring break.

  36. Martin says:

Eva Longoria looked tacky with that dress

  37. Molly says:

I like the colour on Claire Danes. Her dress wasn’t nice but she was good in blue

  38. Molly says:

Too much botox on Margulies’s face

  39. Margot says:

    Longoria seems awful

  40. Mimi says:

I like Danes. Her dress was simple but elegant

  41. Nives says:

    Margulies seems so bitchy

  42. JenniferJustice says:

Fashion critics haven’t accepted the fact that Soirse is conservative. She’s never going to be the sheer-wearing boobs out kind of woman. And she’s only 22. She’s allowed to still be twee. I’d rather see “twee” than hanging all out like the others #cough#Eva#cough#. Can’t stand Eva Longoria. That dress is so odd fitting frm teh front and I know Eva has a great body. It’s weird how thick waisted it makes her from the front. The back view is flattering, but the front is some weird optical illusion because I know she’s actually very tiny.
