Aishwarya Rai in Elie Saab & Ali Younes at Cannes: too beige-y or beautiful?

I love Aishwarya Rai, and I will defend her honor and her beauty all day, every day. But I will not defend her style. Like, if we’re just judging her from the neck up, Aishwarya will always be the winner. But every year, Cannes rolls around and Aishwarya gets paid to show up and look beautiful, and I often find myself questioning her style choices. I’m not saying she has to go full Barbie or anything, but I don’t understand why a woman with her coloring is so enamored with beigey-nudes. Here’s Aishwarya in Elie Saab. This beigey-pink-nude does nothing for her. And Elie Saab does some great work with bright colors! So why this? Also, I feel like her lipstick is a bit too dark.

Here is Aishwarya in Ali Younes Couture a few nights ago in Cannes… I don’t get it. At all. The nude-netting cape and the dress… I mean, it’s not BAD. It’s not “WTF?” It’s just not as pretty as it should be, in my opinion. And the turquoise eye makeup? I actually sort of like that, it reminds me of Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra.

Juliette Binoche in Armani Prive. Juliette is awesome, and I like the simplicity of this. I just wish she had done something else with her hair (she did a center part with a long-ass braid down the back).

Li Yuchun in Julien Fournié Couture. Even though I would never wear this and I don’t even like it that much, I admire that Li Yuchun went for a big, bold look.

Araya A. Hargate in Zuhair Murad Spring 2016 Couture. I actually love this. It’s perfect for Cannes, the fabric is interesting, and I sort of wish Aishwarya had worn this.

I love that woman. Her beauty takes my breath away. On screen she’s something very special, I have yet to come across another actress that can light up a screen the way she does.

    • Locke Lamora says:

I’m the opposite. She looks amazing in pictures, but on screen she leaves me cold. In the few movies I’ve see with her I didn’like her.

      • Dyan says:

Really? I actually think pictures don’t do her justice. She is far from a good actress, but her on-screen presence is captivating to me.

      • Jade says:

I’m with you. She’s quite one dimensional onscreen, perhaps due to lack of great roles. Anyway, no less stunning and I’m quite sure she is more stunning off camera. Also, she sounds more intelligent when she is not in a role. I always remember the articulate way she spoke when she won Ms Universe or Ms World.

      • Locke Lamora says:

Did her articulate speech have anything to do with the fact that English is an official language in India? I feel like women from English-speaking countries always have an advantage in these kinda things.

      • Jade says:

@Locke hmmm I don’t think so. For example, English is an official language in my Asian country but not all of the locals sound confident speaking it though I think we are understood. Anyway, confident public speaking is a talent. Not everyone can do it even if you speak the language well in private.

    • LeAnn Stinks says:

One cannot deny her beauty, but there are so many reports that she attained it, like so many others, through plastic surgery.

There is also been an ongoing dispute regarding her “natural” eye color.

  2. Locke Lamora says:

I love the first look. The dress, the hair, the lipstick, perfection. And I like the first shade of nude on her. If the dress was in a bright colour, with that much sparkle it would have been too much.

    • Goats on the Roof says:

      I agree. She looks fantastic.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I do, too. I think the pinky beige is pretty on her. Not as dramatic as a color, but romantic and delicate.

    • LannisterForever says:

Yeah, I think she looks great too. She is breathtakingly beautiful.

  3. HH says:

That black dress would have been perfect for the punk themed met gala 2 years ago or this years tech themed gala. I don’t like it for Cannes.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

It would have been! Is it leather? Or vinyl or something? It must weigh a ton.

    • SloaneY says:

It looks like a tarp that you would put over your boat in the off season.

  4. Josefina says:

Aishwarya at her very worst will still look better than 99% of the world’s population, but I agree on the beigeness.

Li Yuchun looks like an evil space goddess from an old sci fi movie. And I love it.

    • V4Real says:

I’m the opposite. She is one of the women that some people say is one of the most beautiful women around but I don’t see it. There are plenty of women in the business that I think blows her away in looks.

      • Naddie says:

Specially due to so many interventions and heavy make up. Beautiful, no doubt, but heavily plastic-looking.

  5. Jegede says:

    Getting her L’Oreal coins!!

Seems Aishwraya’s looks in Cannes this year have focused on her lips, rather than clothes.
Her outfits are playing a supporting role to her face.

This year she’s working the make-up, particularly the lip brand, hard.
And she wore a shock purple lip colour in her most recent red carpet.

    • What was that says:

Yes exactly..all the L’oreal people were there ..it seems they take over….
Trouble with L’oreal is there is an unfortunate nazi past and links to right wing organisations with the owner….and they continue to do animal tests…so a no no from me..

  6. ReineDidon says:

    Aishwarya is everything.

    • tegteg says:

She is beyond stunning. Every time I see her, I have to do a double take. I think Indian women are extremely beautiful, but her face is so unique. She seems very sweet, too.

  7. Jayna says:

I think she looks stunning and love the gowns in the nude shades on her.

Juliette is rocking the red carpet.

    Araya’s gown is fabulous.

  8. OriginallyBlue says:

    She is a damn goddess.

  9. Magnoliarose says:

Aishwarya is a beauty but I hardly ever like her style. I hate the blue eyeshadow and lipstick with the color combinations she is wearing. I don’t like her styling overall. It’s matronly. Li and Araya look good but I don’t think Araya carries the dress as great as it could look on someone else. Li looks like a Scifi villainess and I love that.

  10. missmerry says:

I remember going wedding dress shopping and having a hard time finding a non-strapless dress in the style I wanted, I also remember having a hard time when I went prom dress shopping because when you end up going, it’s about 100 of the same dress just slightly different, but the colors and details and cuts and sometimes slim pickin’s depending on the year and season. (also, I’m super picky and critical of myself and clothes so that might have to do with it…)

I wonder if celebs have this kind of issue too, like in the case of Rai, maybe she and other celebs are wearing tons of this nude color b/c that’s whats been down the runways lately and it’s what they have to choose from?

just a thought, maybe celebs are ready for the nude to go away, too.

    • Locke Lamora says:

Do you guys always buy dresses for prom? Because here people sometimes buy them, but it’s pretty standard to have them made by a seamstress. The cost ends up bein roughly the same.
I bought mine because in my generation we all for some reason wore cocktail dresses, but my sister whose was the more typical long gown, had her made.

      • Starkiller says:

I never went to prom as I was living out of the country (US) during most of what would have been high school, but at that time (like 10-12 years ago) most of my peers bought dresses. However, it’s my understanding from family with teens that in more recent years, the cost of prom gowns has ballooned to such a degree (the low end would be around $500 USD, which is a LOT of money for most people) that having them made is quickly becoming a more appealing option-much cheaper here. Buying vintage dresses seems to be a more popular choice as well.

  11. nubiahbella says:

I guess I am the only that find her overrated and something has changed on her face

    • V4Real says:

I also find her overrated and nothing special in the looks department.

    • I Choose Me says:

You’re not alone. I think she has a beautiful but uninteresting face. It’s more conventionally pretty and sweet.

  12. gia says:

She stunning but definitely putting on weight. I think she looks better naturally which is rare.

    • kibbles says:

There was a huge controversy about her weight gain several years ago after she gave birth. She is no longer in her 20s and she’s had a baby. Of course her body will change and she will no longer be a size 2 or whatever she was back then. She looks great for her age and I like that she is not bone thin.

  13. SleepyJane says:

If only I could have 5% of her beauty. I love the blue eye makeup with the nude dress.

  14. Marty says:

I love her dark lip! Especially the way it contrasts against the nude/beige of the dress.

  15. Bread and Circuses says:

Ooh, I really, really like Li Yuchun’s look. She looks sleek and amazing, the necklace is to die for and displayed perfectly with that cut, and the whole dress memorable and dramatic. Love it!
