Tom Cruise declares his allegiance to Scientology: ‘It’s a beautiful religion’

Berlin premiere of 'Jack Reacher: Never Go Back'
Lainey at LaineyGossip first alerted me to the fact that Tom Cruise was being uncharacteristically subdued during the promotional tour for Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. It’s like we barely saw Tom and when we did he wasn’t all wide-eyed and over the top. Jack Reacher was bested at the box office its opening weekend by Boo! A Madea Halloween so maybe that wasn’t the best strategy. You can’t chalk Tom’s relative calmness to achieving a healthy distance from the Scientology cult, though. During an interview in which he was asked about Louis Theroux’s upcoming My Scientology Movie, Tom made it clear that he’s still very much in and called it a “beautiful religion” which has helped him.

Cruise was asked about his thoughts on Louis Theroux’s documentary My Scientology Movie (due in 2017), which does not paint the church in the most positive light.

‘It’s something that has helped me incredibly in my life,’ he began. ‘I’ve been a Scientologist for over 30 years.’

‘It’s something, you know, without it, I wouldn’t be where I am,’ he continued. ‘So it’s a beautiful religion. I’m incredibly proud.’

[From The Daily Mail]

Jason Lee just said that he’s out of Scientology, after moving to Texas, and it’s thought that other high profile cult members are quietly out too. Not Tom, he’s in it for life and he may not be trashing psychiatry in interviews anymore but he’s not about to leave his BFF David Miscavige. Tom has been selling off his properties and there’s a new report that a luxury penthouse is being made for him in Clearwater, Florida, where Scientology has its headquarters. Pretty soon it’s only going to be Tom, John Travolta and the old guard left. Lee signified that the hipsters are abandoning the sinking ship while Leah Remini’s documentary series is coming out next year. Tom just looks like a relic clinging to a cult which has ruined countless lives, is likely hurting his career, has kept him from seeing his child in years and is surely sucking up a large portion of his wealth. At least he can still bro it up with his bestie Miscavige, going for motorcycle rides, working out together and believing they’re the rightful inheritors of LRon’s fraud.

Cobie Smulders is a bit touchy feely with Tom. Is she going to be wife n. 4 (?)??

    • Mia4S says:

She’s married with two kids. She’s just doing her job, trying to make this (alleged) cult shill who abandoned his child (allegedly) look like a human.

  2. beth says:

Beautiful religion? They don’t even allow you to see Suri.

    • Chetta B. says:

And they divide and devastate families. Such horsesh*t. I’m so glad Nazaneen Boniadi’s story got out, so glad.

    • Vox says:

He could see her if he wanted, but COB would give him a lot of snide shit for it. It’s more freedom than other COS members have. He’d have to put up with COB’s bitchery but he himself wouldn’t be made PTS if he had some contact with Suri, let alone be kicked out of the church. Tom not seeing Suri is largely on his shoulders, he’s not an average COS member, or even an average celebrity member.

  3. Suzy from Ontario says:

He doesn’t get it. Scientology has hurt his career, not helped it, despite what he thinks. He looks like an idiot sticking with such a horrible cult that has hurt so many people. Just the fact that he has virtually abandoned his daughter over it paints him in a very bad light. Nothing should be more important than your child.

    • msd says:

No one interpret this as being pro-cult but …. I think early on it probably did help his career in the same way, say, doing a self help course or seeing a therapist would help an insecure or struggling actor (confidence, career planning etc) but it stopped being any kind of help years ago. If it wasn’t for all the shitty stuff we know he has either condoned or directly been involved in – from using sea org slaves to turning his first two kids against Nicole and now never seeing Suri – it would actually be sad. He doesn’t need them, they need him; they don’t help him, he helps them …. but he doesn’t see it.

  4. guestie says:

Oh honey, they only want your money. I’m pretty sure they laugh about you behind your back.

  5. frisbee says:

What’s he going to say, well actually it’s dreadful, it brainwashed a lot of emotionally vulnerable people and stole all their money, it ruined their kids lives, I’ve allowed it to destroy my own relationship with my daughter and I’m actually too terrified to leave because they know everything about me and could ruin me by exposing me for the hypocritical bas*ward that I am?
He’s going to stick it out until the (hopefully) bitter end, there’s nothing else he can do, he’s into that whole sorry cess pit up to his neck.

  6. detritus says:

Beautiful when you are the one reaping the benefits of SeaOrg and the other people you have basically enslaved.

I would like to see if Tom’s opinion changed if he had to go through that for 6 months.

    • Ms. Blake says:

Nailed it! I think his opinion of this “beautiful religion” would completely change if he had to endure what SeaOrg members go through after just one week!

  7. LiterallyaShambles says:

    It’s a f*cking cult, you tw*t.
That’s a huge slap in the face to all the people who have PTSD or are dead because of what they endured at the hands of this sadistic group of wackos.

  8. Slowsnow says:

Are his co-stars contractually obliged to praise him? Emily Blunt (who otherwise appears sane) keeps saying endearing things about him and now Smulders. Granted, they sound as if they’re talking about a child but still… (See Graham Norton show etc.)

  9. original kay says:

    Thanks Tom stupid Cruise.

Because of you I can no longer read Reacher novels. I see his face as Reacher 🙁
I used to love them. My favourite was 61 Hours. I liked the old lady a lot.

  10. amp122076 says:

I will say he looks great (especially his hair) for his age. He’s hanging in there.

    • tigerlily says:

I disagree, when I saw the first pic I wondered WTF he did to his face, esp around the eye area. And his hair looks like he used a Clairol box of dye.

  11. Clare says:

I’m completely befuddled by people who continue to work with this creep – I mean, I can sort of see up and coming actors trying to make a name, but big name stars and producers, directors etc?? Blows my mind!

    • Sea Dragon says:

      He and Woody Allen.

    • DSW says:

I don’t even understand how he still has a career. His movies over the last ten years or so are pretty much interchangeable. It’s the same action hero character over and over.

    • Greentea says:

Check out the long list of people still happy to work with Roman Polanski and Woody Allen. $$$ and exposure.

  12. Giddy says:

My religion teaches that all are equal in God’s eyes, and I think that’s beautiful. Scientology is a cult where you have to buy status through paying for courses or outright donations. Little Tommy likes being so “special” in his cult, but that doesn’t make it beautiful.

  13. Hollz says:

True Believers are always terrifying, regardless of what it is they believe.
I’m just glad Katie and Suri got away from him at this point. He’s never going to get away from the cult, because he doesn’t want to.

  14. Ruyana says:

Of course he sees it as a “beautiful religion”. Little David Miscaviage is madly in love with him. Tom is given anything he wants at any time. He is provided with lots and lots of free slave labor and he is never, never told “no”. It’s not the religion he loves – it’s the results religion gives him. I’m sure those at the bottom of the pyramid scheme don’t share his views.

    • Greentea says:

Not in love but sees him as a great asset. One of those documentaries (prob Going Clear) talks about how DM loves to target high profile stars for the $$$ and influence and glamour they can bring to Ho$.`

  15. FlowerParis says:

    Where is Shelly Miscavige, Tommy?

  16. eggy weggs says:

I wonder how much money CO$ actually gets from Tom. It was my impression that he gets a lot from the church for free, through SeaOrg labor, because he is the golden child/biggest and most steadfast star member.

  17. Deanne says:

Says the man who’s allegedly abandoned his daughter for being a Suppresive Person. I wonder how beautiful he would think it was. if he had to spend a year in the infamous Hole. He has benefited from slave labour and is treated like the second coming. Nauseating.

  18. Joannie says:

He sees his daughter. I just saw a pic of them together.

    • Goldie says:

If you’re referring to the Daily Mail story that came out today, the photo they used was from 5 years ago. It was taken while he was still married to Katie.

      • Mia4S says:

I saw that @GOLDIE. Some vague story about how they totally saw each other in a small UK village using a photo from 5 years ago!! Oh and he’s apparently “found love” with a UK woman. 😒

I smell damage control….oh boy do I ever smell damage control!

      • Goldie says:

Ha. Yeah that article was super vague. Apparently he has a new British girlfriend, but the magazine doesn’t know anything about her-what her name is, what she looks like, what she does for a living, nothing. And of course he had a top secret visit in England with his daughter months ago, but it’s only coming out now that he has a movie to promote. Yeah…not buying it.

      • Joannie says:

You’re right. I went back and looked at the picture. It’s old.

    • Greentea says:

That story reads like a fake leak from his team to stem the tide of stories about Tom being a bad father. If Tom Cruise wanted you to know he was really seeing his daughter he’d be releasing pics of their get together or staging pap shots like they did at that water park way back. The guy is incapable of being subtle.

  19. Bess says:

I haven’t been able to watch any Tom Cruise movies since he married Nicole Kidman. Everything about Tom and his relationships with women seems very forced to me. It’s like he overcompensates.

  20. Susie says:

I can’t wait to hear the dirt they so obviously have on him. It’s gotta be super juicy. Something big, like murder or hiding a body (“A friend will help you move. A best friend will help you move a body.” Seinfeld)

  21. Cee says:

Yeah, Tom, it’s beautiful because they treat you like God and you benefit from slave work and cruelty.

    Idiot.

  22. LAK says:

    Yep, he’s a lifer!!

  23. ‘So it’s a beautiful religion. I’m incredibly proud.’

Only it’s not a religion Tom. It’s a destructive, money-making, family destroying, cult. One of the worst decisions the government made and has yet to correct is granting this organization religious status.

    • Greentea says:

The IRS tried back in the 70s or 80s or something and was hit with thousands and thousands of lawsuits by Ho$ cult members. It’s not an existential threat and can’t easily be wiped out just yet.

      • It’s a shame our own govt. let them bully the crap out of them with lawsuits until they capitulated. With all the horror stories from former members for decades now, you’d think the FBI or another agency would have some top notch investigation, under cover or otherwise, to find cause to charge them and/or strip them of their tax exempt status. The government could bankrupt them. Hopefully, one of these years.

  24. MissW says:

He has the best hair. 😍 Seriously, for a guy in his 50s that’s amazing hair. But yeah, doesn’t really compensate for the cray cray. That being said, I saw and highly enjoyed the new Jack Reacher.
