Taylor Swift looks amazing for British Vogue, talks about the ‘weirdness’ of ‘Cats’

The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust reception

Taylor Swift covers the January issue of British Vogue to promote her role in CATS: The Movie. Which still looks absolutely bonkers. The computer-generated “fur” on the actors is an absolute hellscape, and I’m just concerned about this film overall. Taylor’s into it though. She probably knows that the film is bonkers, but she was – at the time – angling for a Best Song Oscar nomination for “Beautiful Ghosts,” the song she cowrote with Andrew Lloyd Webber. That hope is now dead in the water! Webber was there with Taylor for the Vogue interview too and he seems somewhat fond of her. You can read the cover excerpt here. Some highlights:

Taylor on songwriting: “I think [writing] is really important – also from the side of ownership over what you do and make. Even if you aren’t a natural writer, you should try to involve yourself in the messages you’re sending.” Lloyd Webber agrees: “Today, very few people have a major career unless they write.”

Taylor approached ‘Lover’ as almost a live album: “I did. I was really singing a lot at that point – I’d just come from a stadium tour, and then did Cats, which was all based on live performances – so a lot of that album is nearly whole takes. When you perform live, you’re narrating and you’re getting into the story and you’re making faces that are ugly and you’re putting a different meaning on a song every time you perform it.”

Whether she wanted to be an actress: “I have no idea. When I was younger, I used to get questions like, ‘Where do you see yourself in 10 years?’ I’d try to answer. As I get older, I’m learning that wisdom is learning how dumb you are compared to how much you are going to know. I really had an amazing time with Cats. I think I loved the weirdness of it. I loved how I felt I’d never get another opportunity to be like this in my life.”

A story about Judi Dench: “There is one scene that Idris [Elba, who plays Macavity] and I do with Judi [Old Deuteronomy], and someone walked up to me with this kind of gummy candy and I was like, ‘Oh, I’ve never had this before, this must be British candy, this is amazing.’ I was raving about this candy so much, and Judi must have overheard me, because the next day I got to my dressing room and there was a signed photo from Judi and, like, six bags of it.”

[From British Vogue]

Dame Judi: candy-gifter. That’s a nice story. But… Taylor has spent so much time in Britain over the years, was that really the first time she’d ever tried British candy? Or was it a specific kind of candy that she hadn’t tried before? I know I’m weird for focusing on that, but it bugs me! As for songwriting… I agree, that’s how it should be, that musical artists should be writers or at least keep their toe in songwriting. But many current artists do not.

Also: Tay’s styling for this cover shoot was AMAZING. She should hire these people to work with her full-time.

Her hair/styling has been a hot mess since Reputation but she looks amazing here!

    • Jan080 says:

Nicole Kidman in To Die For.

    • petee says:

I don’t mean to be mean but is she ever going to go away for awhile or take a break?Of course she look’s good here. She has stylists, make-up people and professionals to make her up.And photoshopping and filters too.I am just so over her but it’s like you can not get away from her.

    • Sara says:

Wow she looks so much better. The bleach blonde hair and bright red lipstick don’t really do too much for her.

  2. Noely says:

She does look really stunning in this pictorial.

    • smcollins says:

She really does, but if I’m being completely honest I didn’t realize it was her at first. Until I read the headline I thought the header pic was Margot Robbie.

      • Paige says:

Totally agree @smcollins-doesn’t look like her..someone found a way to make her look sexy!

      • whatWHAT? says:

        yup, me too.

I saw the headline and was like “yeah nah don’t know who THAT is, but it ain’t Taylor Swift”. Looks like a Swift/Robbie hybrid.

I will never understand why the photo editor goes THAT FAR with the ‘shop. like, I understand getting rid of blemishes, wrinkles, stray flyaway hairs…but to edit the person so she just looks like someone who looks like the celeb, or it looks like a DIFFERENT celeb, or like a hybrid of two different people…just no Bueno.

      • Becks1 says:

YES. The cover is gorgeous but she doesn’t look like Taylor Swift, at all.

      • lucy2 says:

I agree, didn’t realize it was her at first.

    • Cali says:

She does look amazing, 🤩 whoever done her hair and makeup here should be her permanent team.

  3. minx says:

    Wow. Gorgeous.

  4. Lenn says:

Did they photoshop her lips though?

  5. Ariela says:

Wow, she reminds me of Sophia Loren in that top picture. Absolutely stunning.

  6. Eleonor says:

Thank God finally someone who knows what to do with her hair!

  7. Diana says:

The best she has ever looked!!!! I love that cut on her!!!

  8. Originaltessa says:

Those two poses look identical to me in the face. A lot of nostril.

    • BANANIE says:

Yeah! In her Instagram post she commented “This is the one face I made that day.” So she was definitely poking fun at herself.

  9. grabbyhands says:

As I get older, I’m learning that wisdom is learning how dumb you are compared to how much you are going to know.

I still don’t like her, but I like this.

  10. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

Well well well. Taylor’s a woman! Hire these artists.

    • ChillyWilly says:

I agree, Mabs. She looks like an adult, confident, sexy woman here. She should really ditch the sugar and spice little girl look for good.

  11. Lucy says:

This photoshoot was probably the very first time I saw her and thought “wow, she looks sexy”. The picture of her in the pink knitten top is my fave.

    • Pita says:

Yes agree this is the first time i see any kind of real sexiness, but sadly it also does not look like her at all, she looks like a mix of Margot Robbie and Linda Evangelista.

  12. WendyWoo says:

    She looks like Claudia Schiffer.

With every negative review I see of CATS, the more I want to see it. It’s now my most anticipated film of the year. It sounds HORRIBLE and I CANNOT WAIT!

    • ChillyWilly says:

Lol! Me too! I want to see it BECAUSE it looks so awful.

    • Some chick says:

Plus 100. I can hardly wait. I’m going to gather up some of my cat lady friends and have some brownies first. It’s going to be awesome!

  13. Kyla says:

I legit thought it was Margot Robie in that first photo.

Maybe Taylor Swift is the Don Swayze of Margot Robie?

  14. Lala11_7 says:

I like Taylor…I’ve always liked Taylor…even have liked Taylor’s mistakes…and she looks absolutely STUNNING and GROWN & SEXY for the first time to me…

  15. Wamamax3 says:

She needs to ditch the “red lip” every once in a while for this lined pinky nude. That with the well-done smoky eye looks really, really good on her.

  16. (TheOG)@Jan90067 says:

If she goes back to straight, heavy bangs after this styling she is not smart! This has got to be the best she’s ever looked (she did do *one* shoot a few years ago, in a “Mod” styling that was gorgeous, too, but here she looks like a grown-ass, sexy *WOMAN*, not a “girl”!)

She should offer the stylists (hair/clothes/makeup) a king’s ransom, but GET THEM FULL TIME! She looks amazing in these shots!

  17. Steph says:

I’m going to see Cats. 1. Bc I was too poor to see it on Broadway. 2. Les Twins. I couldn’t really care less about anyone else in the movie (except Idris). I really wish we got more on their contribution besides what their coworkers say that editorials leave out.

  18. Cindy says:

Woah, she should hire whoever did her hair and makeup here to style her forever. This is legitimately the best she’s ever looked.

I never, ever thought I’d say this about Taylor Swift but she looks… sexy!

  19. Valiantly Varnished says:

    Holy Photoshop Batman!

  20. Lisa says:

    Taylor looks great.

  21. KBeth says:

Not a fan but these photos are lovely.
I will watch the dumpster fire that is Cats when it is available for streaming.

  22. Beach Dreams says:

Count me as the odd one out. She doesn’t even look like herself (perhaps that’s why people think this cover looks so good). Part of it is the wig; that kind of retro hairstyle looks weird on her.

    • stepup says:

With you. She looks generic and not like herself. It’s like someone face-mashed Claudia Schiffer’s and Margo Robie’s visage onto Taylor’s.

    • Allz says:

Yeah, they’ve literally photoshopped all of her features in these pictures. I think Taylor is attractive in real life, but she looks nothing like this in everyday photos. And I only recognized it was Taylor because she has her mouth open, top row of teeth showing, as per usual.

    • Mtec says:

Yeah I think she either got really well-done lip fillers recently, or they went heavy with the overlining and/or photoshop, ’cause her top lip has never been that full, and honestly, IMO that’s her most unique facial feature, so I dunno why they would change that.

  23. shells_bells says:

I thought she was Margot Robbie at first glance.

  24. sammiches says:

The woman’s face that has been made by the heavy photoshopping is BEAUTIFUL. But this ain’t Taylor Swift.

  25. Peri says:

I feel ridiculous in that I feel neutral about TS but that once again, I think the commentary on her here is over the top. Being bothered by her candy comment and asking whether that was really the first time she’d ever tried British candy fits into that. She was clearly referring to a specific type. Good god, there are legitimate things to criticize her for, but comments like that just make it look like people are looking for literally anything she says to pick apart.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that when it comes to her and some others on here, there seems to be a purposeful bad-faith interpretation of things that are done and said.

  26. Mar says:

I did not know who that was until I read who it was.

  27. Janet says:

This is a very different Taylor than we’re used to seeing. From her makeup to her posing. She’s wearing smoky brown eye shadow with strong eyeliner, something she has never done before. She also never wears brown lip stick. People don’t understand the transformative power of makeup. Not to mention how different her hair looks here. She needs to update her look and fully come into her womanhood and leave behind the childish persona she’s been holding onto and THIS is how she should do that.

  28. Claudia says:

It was a specific kind of candy, she talked about it in other interviews. Squashies – she said she had it before and raved about it when she was hungry and the next day Judi left her 6 packages in the dressing room.

  29. serena says:

She looks so much like Avril Lavigne!
