Brad Pitt says he ‘definitely writes’ his speeches, with the help of ‘very funny friends’

Oscars 2020 Press Room

I’ll say something nice about Brad Pitt to start off this story: the photos of Brad posing with last year’s Best Supporting Actress Regina King are some of the loveliest of the night. They looked like each other’s dates, and my guess is that they’ve probably known each other for a million years. Now, for all of the dumb sh-t. When Brad won his Oscar for OUATIH, it was the crowning of Hollywood’s prom king, Hollywood’s “most popular.” And to drive it home, there were a million stories about how Brad was super-popular when he attended the Vanity Fair Oscar party, how he hung out with Tiffany Haddish, Elizabeth Banks, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian and more. But the best story? Brad claims he’s been writing all of his speeches himself. Oh.

Brad Pitt insists he personally wrote all of his awards speeches — but did admit some “very funny friends” helped him with “some laughs.” The actor, who achieved a full awards-season sweep including the Best Supporting Actor Oscar at Sunday night’s Academy Awards, has been hit with speculation that he’d had professional speechwriters penning his unusually candid and funny speeches.

But Pitt said backstage at the Oscars after picking up his award for his role in “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood, “ Historically, I’ve always been really tentative about speeches, like, they make me nervous. So this — this round, I figured if we’re going to do this — like, put some, like, some real work into it and try to get comfortable, and this is the result of that. No, I definitely write them. I have some funny friends. I have some very, very funny friends that helped me with some laughs, but, no, it’s, you know, it’s got to come from the heart.”

He continued of his shyness on an awards stage, “For me, it was just about getting cozy, you know, up in front of a mass of people. I know that sounds antithetical given the profession I’ve chosen, but it’s not necessarily my thing. So that’s probably what I’ll remember.”

But of his political reference in his Oscar acceptance speech onstage — where he made a dig about John Bolton not being brought to give evidence before the Senate and said Quentin Tarantino (who likes a different historical ending) should make a movie about the impeachment — Pitt, 56, said, “I was really disappointed with this week. And I think when gamesmanship trumps doing the right thing, it’s a sad day and I don’t think we should let it slide. And I’m very serious about that.”

He writes them himself but he has “very funny friends” who help him write the jokes? Yeah, he had a crack team of Alia Shawkat, Adam McKay, Quentin Tarantino and Bruce Vilanch working on his speeches. Let’s be real. And it’s a shame he can’t properly identify the people.

And finally, Brad did reunite with Jennifer Aniston on Sunday night, probably to thank her for all of her help in hyping him and keeping the gossip positive and vintage.

Hollywood gossips on high alert for Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston sightings after last month’s tantalizing rendezvous at the SAG Awards got another chance to glimpse the pair together after the Academy Awards ceremony. Spies told Page Six that newly crowned Oscar winner Pitt and ex Aniston both showed up at music bigwig Guy Oseary’s famed annual bash in Los Angeles on Sunday night. But we’re told there was no sizzle this time around. Spies say that while Aniston congratulated Pitt on his win, they didn’t hang out long.

Madonna, who usually co-hosts the exclusive bash, missed it this year because she’s on tour in Europe. But her absence didn’t take any glitz off the guest list.

So they saw each other at one of the big (private, no-photo) parties and they only spoke briefly. Oh well. The only way we’ll get another round of Bradifer gossip is when Jennifer is campaigning for an Emmy six months from now. Brace yourselves.

Would Brad really help Jen with her Emmy campaign though?! HE got what he wanted.

    • doofus says:

Does Aniston really NEED Pitt’s help with an Emmy campaign?

      I’m gonna go with “NO”.

      • brinibini says:

I’m not saying that she needs it or even wants it, I’m just wondering if he would actually return the favor.

      • doofus says:

oh, no worries, I got that. I was just kind of replying to the bit in the article about getting more Pittiston gossip when she does her Emmy campaign run. and playing off of your comment, too.

I wonder if he’d return the favor, too…he got his statue, sure…but it would be more good PR for him to make nice with her during that time.

      • Mia LeTendre says:

He’s gorgeous and wonderful. He doesn’t hype himself up, but as a black woman, i love that Brad Pitt walks the walk. He produced Moonlight and The Last Black Man in SF – two movies i thought were the freshest Hwood movies in years. As a successful straight white man, he puts up the money, then gets out of the way for black voices to speak. I applaud him.

      • Sierra says:

@Mia: do read about his Make it right foundation and the pain he has given to people (especially black people) in New Orleans.

    • lucy2 says:

      Hell no. He’s a user.
My feeling is she was friendly but in a detached way, he saw the PR opportunity, and seized on it during his awards run (and overshadowed her own win). And now he has his little gold statue so he’s done.

Also, I thought she was pretty great on that show and really surprised me wit her performance, so I wouldn’t be mad if she won an Emmy for it.

  2. Astrid says:

Yikes is his face sliding off his skull?

    • Mabs A'Mabbin says:

Time gets all of us lol. It’s about how we want others to know how we see ourselves and how we’ve chosen to ‘deal with it.’

  3. Lady Baden-Baden says:

Looking forward to Tiffany Haddish’s chatting-up-Brad-Pitt stories!

  4. Valiantly Varnished says:

So in other words…his funny friends wrote his speeches.

The photos of him with Regina are lovely. And he looks terrible in the pic with Tiffany.

    • OriginalCarol says:

Horrible picture with Tiffany. He looks like Val Kilmer twin and not a good one.

    • Truthiness says:

Enty is claiming that Pitt used the same speech writer as Joaquin. I would bet money it is whoever George Clooney used. George’s speach was uncommonly eloquent. I just wish Renee would have asked for a writer. She needed it!

  5. chancye says:

his face looks fine, but he really needs to get a haircut

  6. Ravensdaughter says:

Did anyone see Tarantino’s movie? Was Brad worth the hype?
I have a feeling that Angelina is way unpopular in Hollywood because she’s a STRONG woman and she never played the game.

    • Lady Baden-Baden says:

Was Brad worth the hype? No. As many have said – DiCaprio was MILES better. Movie was… ok. Occasionally great. But overall, not one of Tarantino’s best IMO

    • Snazzy says:

I hated the movie. All out hated it. Like I saw it as a waste of three hours of my life that I will never get back. But I know others who liked it, so… to each his own, right?
I thought Brad was good in it.

    • Janiet says:

I love the film, and I totally disagree with the opinion that Leo outshone Brad. I actually thought it was the reverse. Leo’s acting was very good, yes, but Brad was the movie star, it kinda really jumped out at you. Anyway, it was a really good movie!

    • Sof says:

One of the reasons some people dislike her is her humanitarian work, which is ridiculous. The “saint Angelina” narrative gets on people’s nerves, as if she wasn’t allowed to change.
And let’s be real, she makes them look bad by using her position to talk about uncomfortable subjects that are being ignored: rape in war zones.

    • Sierra says:

I don’t get this common theme about Angelina supposedly being unpopular in Hollywood.

She is very good friends with a lot of them especially heads of studios. People didn’t know George Lucas was a very good friend nor that Kathryn Bigelow was.

The difference between Angelina and Brad/Jennifer is that while Brad & Jen constantly advertises their show business friends, Angelina doesn’t.

2020 is going to be Angelina’s year with 4 movies coming out with 1 potential award winning role. Let’s see how that gossip is going to be.

    • MellyMel says:

The movie is good and it was definitely a love letter to Hollywood from that era. And yes Leo was the better part of it. I would recommend watching it just to see him honestly.

    • DarlingDiana says:

Regina King, Charlize Theron, Reese Witherspoon, Oprah Winfrey, Meryl Streep, and Ava Devurnay, to name just a few off the top of my head, are all strong women that have succeeded in HW with continuing popularity both by the public and the industry. Strength, popularity, and success aren’t mutually exclusive

    • Scorpio ♏️ Rants says:

I saw it. Not QTs best but enjoyable. Brad was excellent IMO. He just nailed it. Every single scene.

I also thought Leo was outstanding in parts.

  7. KellyRyan says:

One thing Brad will never admit. He is so average, usually to a point of dullness.

I’ve enjoyed two films he was in, Burn After Reading, Coen Bros., and Babel. He was in the film, not the film.

    • BellaBella says:

He was very good in that Billy the Kid movie. I’m normally pretty meh on him but he impressed me in that movie.

      • SaraR. says:

Jesse James? That’s my favorite movie of his.

      • Green Desert says:

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford! Loved that movie. I also think he’s great in Inglourious Basterds. Those are two I need to re-watch.

      • BellaBella says:

That’s it. Jesse James. LOL This is how my brain works these days.

      • Truthiness says:

Add True Romance. 7even and Twelve Monkeys. Producing 12 years a Slave was his first oscar, so his work is a real mixed bag.

  8. Eleonor says:

    His wig game is awful!

  9. MCV says:

He was looking rough the other night, some sh*t happened to him

    • SaraR. says:

His past three nominations he was there with Angelina, ones both with her and his parents – those were family affairs. And after those glitzy evenings, he got to go home, be with his children. Now, when he acctualy got the trophy, he is alone. If he’s not made of stone, and I don’t think he is, he must have felt a bit of a pang in his heart that whole evening. I know I would.

  10. BlueSky says:

I read that he was one of the producers of Regina’s movie “If Beale Street could talk”

  11. Say what says:

He can’t be serious! “ And I think when gamesmanship trumps doing the right thing, it’s a sad day and I don’t think we should let it slide. And I’m very serious about that.” lol
But anyways why didn’t we see pictures of Aniston if she was there.
His friends didn’t write shite he had a speech writer and it probably was his real girlfriend.
I find him profoundly idiotic trying to sound smart by using a smart word or two. He is the biggest fool in HW. The way his fans pander and fanboy him is pathetic.
Now he can really go away please! I’m tired of his leatherface lying azz seriously.

  12. Becks1 says:

Honestly, my guess is he does write most of his own speeches and then has help with the “zingers” – like I re-watched his acceptance speech, and I’m sure he wrote almost everything in there except the Tarantino line and the opening line about John Bolton, which were the most interesting parts, but the rest seemed like he wrote it himself. He definitely seemed nervous though.

    • ravynrobyn says:

I really wonder if he wrote the line about his kids, “they mean the world to me, everything I do is for them” or whatever word salad he choked out. Is Maddox included in this sentiment? Sure Brad, whatevs 🙄

  13. Andrew’s Nemesis says:

His interview above is complete word salad

  14. Kay says:

He has had a whole PR team since the split from Angelina to help with his image. Even actors coming out saying how great Brad is. His agency/entourage is behind this. I’m sure he has been given training what to say and what not to say when dealing with the press. It wouldn’t surprise me if David Spade. Jimmy Kimmel and other people have advised him about his speeches. I do believe George Clooney might have been involved in the BAFTA speech – Clooney is friends with Megan. He also hired some political people for his PR team. I don’t know why he cannot be honest. The whole thing with J.A was staged and calculating. Then when there were stories about them being together he kept saying in his speeches that he was single and was moving forward. His PR is a bit of a mess.

At the Oscars all they wanted to know was about his kids. He hasn’t been managing the PR very well at all and it’s full of contradictions. His behaviour and some of the things that he has said in the speeches is a sign of immaturity on his part. Why doesn’t he just get divorced and stop dragging the divorce on – he is the one who asked for an extension.

    • SaraR. says:

Because they are waiting for his relationship with children to improve, so he can share custody with Angelina. That’s why it lasts so long.

      • Kay says:

He needs to improve his relationship with Angelina – the mother of his children. His antics over the last few years shows that he is still very bitter about what happened. Obviously he is trying to change and keep healthy. They both need to work together.

As for Hollywood it is full of misogynists who treat women appallingly.

    • Hmmm says:

He had the head of Sony Publicity team with him throughout it all. She was on the red carpet and backstage with him. No doubt she was behind the crazy amount of butt kissing articles that came out.

They needed the movie to make way more than what it did. The movie has not even broke even and Sony gave the 3 of them huge deals. LoL they needed more than just supporting actor and it seems like no one really actually cares that he won after the non stop campaigning he did for that “win” … it’s a bit lackluster.

Funny enough the “flop” maleficent made more than that movie. I think Sony expected brad, Leo and Tarantino combination would get closer to 500 -600 ww. Fell way short.

Then again most Brad Pitt movies flop like dad disastra and allied. He’s lucky he had Leo and Tarantino but his career is still not fixed until he can have a hit of his own which won’t happen.

      • OriginalCarol says:

After the split, he lost half of the Brangelina superfans and he can’t carry a movie by himself any more. He saw the writing on the wall and that’s why he’s riding the coattail on any major A-Lister to help him reviving his lackluster career. Even using his first ex to help rehab his image to win his first acting award. The man is pathetic and has no shame in using any means to get what he wanted.

    • DarlingDiana says:

Tbf to both Brad and Angie when they failed to come to a financial agreement, they both agreed to a bifurcated divorce. They are divorced and either or both can remarry tomorrow if they wanted to. I think that provides some closure for them and the kids and was a wise decision. Also, I doubt either will ever re-marry or, at least, not for another four or five years.

      • OriginalCarol says:

My take on why they failed to come to a financial agreement? She’s trying to make sure their father is doing his fair share of financial support for all the kids, not just the biological ones. As for him, he’s dragging his feet just to be a dick cause he’s a bitter pos.

      • Carmen says:

I’m going out on a very long limb here, but I think he’s still in love with Angie and wants her back, even though he knows she’d never take him back. That’s where all the bitterness is coming from. He still can’t get over the fact that she dumped his ass and took the kids with her.

      • SaraR. says:

Oh please, if financial agreement was a problem, they would have been negotiating that intensely for the past year and a half and they would have come to an agreement. The problem is custody, not money. When they signed the last custody agreement in December 2018, his rep said that it was NOT the final agreement but a step in the right direction. There is no final custody agreement yet, because he is still rebuilding his relationships with his children and that is obviously taking much longer time than anticipated.

      • OriginalCarol says:

It could be both-financial and custody and he’s the one that dragging his feet, no question about it. And yeah I think he’s bitter about Jolie ghosting him thus making him look bad. Is he still in love with her? It’s probably a love and hate relationship for him. She’s over him for sure. If there is any feelings left on her part, it’s likely resentment for the trauma and chaos he had made of her and the children’s lives.

      • Lowrider says:

No way is Brad still in love with Angelina, that is hilarious! I think the hold up is there wine making business. Brad wants full custody if Mirival.

      • SaraR. says:

Miraval has noting to do with it. You think they would drag out the divorce for two years because of Miraval? It’s the kids.

      • Say what says:

He still loves her and his family. In love no but live yes. Angie hurt and embarrassed him and he is spiteful and bitter. Idk what is going on with the kids or finals of the divorce but some of it has to do with Miraval they say. Either way it’s a mess because both are stubborn and hurt.

      • Hmmm says:

The wine guy allegedly said Angelina owns the vineyard and they both own the house. so good luck with that one.

I know no one saw that one coming. Angelina owning the vineyard on her OWN. LMAO

Carmen, he is not capable of loving anyone but himself. Not even his kids.

      • Star says:

I agree that he’s still in love with her. I think you can tell by looking at his PR strategy. He’s basically trying everything and throwing everything at the wall seeing what will stick and get a rise/reaction out of Angelina. Off the top of my head here are some of the myriad techniques he has employed to (I believe) try to get Angies attention:
        – smeared her in the press
        – when that didn’t work he changed strategy and started planting stories in which he was flattering to her
        – pretended to date (??? This is still wtf) a highly accomplished woman, Neri Oxman, who did not seem to reciprocate his interest
        – tried to pretend to date Charlize Theron until her people shut it down
        – in reality hasn’t seemed to seriously date anybody
        – started hanging out with Jennifer Aniston
        – likely hired an entire team to enact an Oscars campaign

      • Lowrider says:

What you listed is not love. That’s a man trying to appease the press. You just know the media has the full story of what went down on the plane. Brad has to give them something to keep them from exposing what he really did that night.

I believe Brad and Angelina can’t stand each other!

  15. Sharon says:

Please someone tell me what’s wrong with his face? Is it aging? The hair? A bad tweak? But something is off…

    • LaUnicaAngelina says:

Everyone keeps saying he looks tweaked. I don’t see it at all. I just see that his age has caught up with him especially with the last 4 very stressful years (of his making). If I’m correct that he hasn’t tweaked, I actually admire that specific thing about him. It’s refreshing to see celebrities age naturally.

  16. Evie says:

Did you see his reaction when that reporter asked about maddox?? He didn’t have a script for that!! https://twitter.com/DaggerKnox/status/1226700209515745280?ref_src=

    • Adorable says:

      Wow..That moment was very telling.

    • OriginalCarol says:

LMAO. He’s slack-jawed by the the question with his mouth hanging. So stupidly unattractive looking. I am convinced this dude had to have a script for everything public speaking. If one reads his printed interviews, they mostly were filled with umm ahh before he could even finish a sentence. No way he didn’t have a ghost writer for his speeches. He’s too proud to admit it less it be known that he’s as stupid as his dumb blonde look.

  17. BellaBella says:

This article is weird because someplace else I read the name of the specific writer who wrote his speeches and I think Pitt was the one who credited him. And it’s not anyone in the list above.

  18. Hmmm says:

Y’all why did he look so terrible at his biggest night ever which we all know he’s sold his soul for? Oh maybe that’s what it was… he sold his soul and looks absolutely wrecked.

The red carpet pix show his wig was pushed too far back and he did not get Botox. He looks older than ever and dry.

He tried to say it wasn’t his best night ever and “hope I have other sh-t going on” but he ran on that stage so fast, stuck his nicotine filled tongue out and almost cried. It was his best night and hey he worked harder on the campaign than he did on the movie.

It all seems a bit underwhelming tbh.

  19. Dizzy says:

No shame in asking friends to help you write a speech. I loved that he thanked Gina Davis and Ridley Scott re: Thelma and Louis

  20. Donn says:

I know I’ll get attacked here, but he’s admitted to being a recovering alcoholic. I’ve been there with many other people, and we did so many things we’re ashamed of. There’s no way to take them back. The biggest thing we can do is stop drinking. It seems he’s done that. The hardest part. He was good in the movie and deserves to be able to move on.

    • Hmm says:

When will he move on? When he stops being bitter and stop planted bullshit in PAGE 666 about the mother of his kids. He is obviously not done being a drunk.

Angelina and her kids deserve to be allowed to move on without being gaslit every other day. Now that he has his special gold maybe he’ll leave them alone, but somehow I doubt that because now starts the campaign for lead roles. *gag*

    • Sarah says:

Whatever attack Brad Pitt is getting, it’s nothing compared to what he put his family through, including the woman he supposedly loved, and his MINOR children. It’s bad enough he did not say anything to stop the attack on Angelina, the mother of his kids, but what kind of man lets his 16-year-old kid get trashed by the press for something he did, without saying anything?

    • Green Desert says:

Donn, I agree. I can’t pile on Brad for this. I’ll admit I have residual affection for him ever since Legends of the Fall came out when I was in 8th grade and I fell in love with him, LOL. So I have a Brad blind spot. A lot of addicts are forgiven for the shitty things they did while using/drinking. But I think there are a lot of Angelina stans around here and they are defending their girl, which I get.

    • Mireille says:

Don’t think anyone should attack you for your comments. It’s a fair assessment. I work in healthcare so I have seen the damage alcohol misuse can do to people and their families. I don’t question anyone’s desire for recovery, but I side-eye Brad’s OTHER behavior, such as his manipulative employ of certain PR tactics to bolster his image, to name a few.

  21. Riley says:

Aniston is actually in a tough position here. Most people can cut their Ex out of their lives when there’s no kids, but she looks like she’s “still not over it” if she shuns him. I know, SHE MILKED IT FOR ALL IT WAS WORTH back in the day, but now she looks petty if she isnt at least polite.

  22. smcollins says:

Eh…he’s not the first and he won’t be the last, I don’t see the big deal. As far as giving credit, again, has *anyone* ever given credit to a speechwriter or co-writer?

    • DarlingDiana says:

Everyone from Presidents to Dlist reality “stars” has people write speeches for them or add in jokes.

    • OriginalCarol says:

The problem is not him giving anyone credit but to claim that he wrote it all except for the jokes which his funny friends helped. He’s not that articulate or eloquent as he seemed to project.

  23. A says:

I keep seeing people say that he aged like fine wine and I just don’t see it. He looks old and waxy.

  24. brobot9000 says:

damn his face looks like its coming off. time is a hell of a drug. or maybe alcohol in brad’s case.

they should stop talking about politics like anyone gives a shit about what they think. lmao you get paid because your talent is faking emotions, policy drivers you are not. dumb ass probably doesnt even know what bolton did at the white house.

  25. Azul says:

Funny how these celebrities who hardly finished high school, now produce well written speeches, write books, design clothes, make up lines, spread anti vaccine garbage, etc.
I guess academic instructions is overrated.

  26. Hmmm says:

Angelina owns Miraval Vineyard. That’s what their collaborator Perrin said in an interview. They both own the house. So good luck to him trying to finagle it out of her the way he did PLAN b and Jennifer.

  27. commenter1234 says:

why are people still so obsessed with him? it’s actually offensive, given that he’s never copped to his behavior except for his drinking. how about how he’s treated his family? i gag at those #bradoftheday pix- i feel like it’s a slap in the face to angelina

  28. Some chick says:

    She is berry pretty.

    He’s Brad Pitt.
