Lauren Bacall tells her granddaughter that Twilight sucks

Now that I’m a True Blood fan, Twilight is starting to seem pretty tame to me. I’ll still watch New Moon with interest, but I’d much rather see sex, violence, and nudity on a regular basis and imagine that my vampire lover is forceful and unpredictable, not some stalkerish guy who has willingly attended high school for centuries. Screen legend Lauren Bacall, 84, remembers when Hollywood vampires were so menacing you wanted to run from them, not f*ck them or try and get them to be your imaginary boyfriend. Bacall wrote on her Twitter account that one of her granddaughters convinced her to watch Twilight and she thought it was so lame she wanted to smack her. Bacall gave her granddaughter a copy of the silent 1922 German film Nosferatu, in which the vampire is a disfigured cruel creature, and told her that’s what vampires are about:

The actress commented that, “Yes, I saw Twilight – my granddaughter made me watch it, she said it was the greatest vampire film ever. After the ‘film’ was over I wanted to smack her across her head with my shoe, but I do not want a (tell-all) book called Grannie Dearest written on me when I die. So instead I gave her a DVD of Murnau’s 1922 masterpiece Nosferatu and told her, ‘Now that’s a vampire film!’ And that goes for all of you! Watch Nosferatu instead!”

Yeah, Lauren Bacall is awesome. I love how blunt she is. She also shared a picture of her hot 19 year-old grandson on her Twitter account, writing that she was surprised to once see him sipping a scotch and hitting on a woman at a party. She writes “Darlins’ do not encourage him by calling him a young Brad Pitt.” There is a certain resemblance there.

Getting back to the vampires, I would rather watch bloodsuckers who are sexy but still dangerous. I saw Nosferatu years ago and it’s truly creepy and scary. There’s only so far you can go with that. You need some sex and intrigue added in for the drama. Twilight is kind of sweetly romantic, and there’s a call for that among the younger set, but it’s really a departure to have vampires who can go out during the day and who don’t bite humans even a little. I’ll still get kind of swoony the next time I see Robert Pattinson on screen, though.

    Love that hot bitch.

  2. MarlaAnn says:

Yea True bLood rules over Twilight!!

  3. BLA says:

Nosferatu stands as the only silent movie to ever give me nightmares. I once woke up as a kid thinking that damn vampire was in my room. Thankfully, my German teacher lost my copy of the movie.

True Blood > Twilight (but neither give me nightmares, heh)

  4. Firestarter says:

I love all Vampire flicks, but I have no desire to see Twilight at all.

Am I wrong? Is it good?

  5. ash says:

I like the Twilight books, and I also liked the first movie – until I watched it more than once. Now, it’s pretty aweful and cheesy. I’m hoping Taylor Lautner brings something new to the next movie, because damn, it has to get better, it just has to….

  6. luna says:

Firestarter, IMHO, no. It’s a 12 year old girl’s fatasy. I watched the movie and thought it was totally corny. There’s a line in the movie where he looks her dead in the face and says, “You’re my own personal brand of heroin” and I laughed out loud in the theater.

The whole premise of Twilight is the sweet, romantic, star crossed lovers angle, but the characters are 2D. I grew up watching Buffy and Angel and they did the vampire/human romance thing way better.

There was also no point in making them vampires. They have the edginess and mystique of bunny rabbits. It’s like the whole vampire storyline was just brought up whenever they needed filler for the too-thin story.

    She is so freaking cool!

  8. tiffa says:

I kinda liked the books (twilight) but they are for kids and poorly written. Stefanie Meyer is an novice author at best. I even thought The Sookie Stackhouse series was better than Twilight! (even though some of the books seemed kind of rushed) As for that creepy Nosferatu, I never seen and I never will! The older movies seem scarier to me for some reason..Any way New Moon is going to suck just like Twilight (movie) sucked. True Blood is the BEST!

  9. Firestarter says:

@Luna- Thanks. That line alone is enough for me to know I really do not want to see it.

    Talk about an old cliche!

  10. Jane Q. Doe says:

A true grand dame of Hollywood. She’s 84 and twitters, for goodness sake! I hope someone takes advantage of her still sassy talent and casts her in a fabulous part.

  11. Neelyo says:

I love Lauren Bacall for telling her granddaughter the truth. I’d be pissed too if I was 84 and had wasted any of my remaining time on a vampire afterschhol special.

If these books and films were designed for 12 year olds, why do so many adults talk about them? As popular as the Judy Blume books were when I was a kid, I don’t recall adults being obsessed with them like that.

  12. Eileen Yover says:

I liked the books-the movie was ridiculous. I thought I was going to get my butt kicked by tween Twihards because I was laughing during the whole movie.
True Blood is awesome! I’m totally addicted to that show! I want to read the books after the series is over so I don’t know what to expect in the show. I’m ready to see Maryann kicked to the curb though-I’m over her.

  13. Michelle says:

I love True Blood. I have read all of Charlaine Harris’s books – they’re addictive! And I was a devout follower of Buffy, Spike – the hottest vampire ever! – and Angel. If you’re over the age of 13 – Twilight sucked – literally!

  14. nona says:

This beautiful lady was one of the very few celebrities who got enough balls to fight McCarthysm

Trashing “TWATlight” is like child’s play to her….

    Don’t you ever die, Bacall!

  15. Ling says:

@luna: I’m pretty sure the heroin line was meant to elicit laughter.

“I do not want a (tell-all) book called Grannie Dearest written on me when I die.” Perfect.

Scary vampires wouldn’t really do it for me, only because nothing differentiates them from other scary half-humans (zombies etc). While I love True Blood perhaps more than my own family, I think the vampires could use a bit more uncontrollable instinct, closer to Louis and Lestat, while still keeping their general characters. That would make it perfect.

  16. sarcra says:

    Is the Twitter account legit?

  17. Kevin says:

I like TRUE vampire stories. Like the vampire K-fat. He actually sucked the life out of the damsel Brittney’s career. BlOOD CURDLING I tell you!!

  18. Essie says:

If Twilight sucks then True blood swallows.

Twilight’s a teen thing anyway, you cant expect an old person to like it.

  19. Beth says:

I wish people who didn’t like Twilight would just not like it and then shut up. I’m not a tween, or even a teen, but I also don’t like gratuitous violence, so Twilight is perfect for me. Everybody likes different stuff, but insulting the people who do like Twilight is just unnecessary. And calling it “TWATlight?” Are you sure YOU’RE not a teen yourself?

  20. Kerri says:

i AGREE WITH YOU BETH, WE SHOULD STOP BASHING EACH OTHER JUST BECAUSE WE HAVE DIFFERENT TASTES.

BUT, TWILGHT STILL SUCKS, ITS MEDIOCRE AT BEST, EVEN MY 12 YEAR OLD SISTER WAS DISAPPOINTED BY THE MOVIE AND SHE WAS SO EXCITED AFTER THE BOOK.

WAS GOING TO TRY READING THE BOOK BUT SOMEONE MENTIONED THAT GOOD EITHER SO I WON’T WASTE MY TIME.

I AM GUESSING THAT THE REASON THIS MOVIE IS SO BIG IS BECAUSE THEY GOT SOME OK LOOKING ACTORS (YES – I MEAN ROBERT PATTERSON, GAVE THEM SOME UNUSUAL LOOKING HARIDO COMPARED TO EVERYONE ELSE IN HOLLYWOOD AND TOLD THEM TO ALWAYS CLENCH YOUR JAWS WHEN TAKING PICTURES WHILE TILTING YOUR HEAD DOWN AND YOUR EYES LOOKING UP.

I ASSUME THAT THATS WHAT THEY CALL BROODING IN HOLLYWOOD.

  21. the original kate says:

love lauren bacall…hate twilight. badly written books made into badly acted movies.

  22. luna says:

@ling I have to respectfully disagree…it was said during a pretty “intense” part of the movie and he said it so seriously. Plus, in a crowded theater, no one laughed out loud except for me and this guy behind me and even then you could tell he was laughing cus it was so cheesy. My friend punched me in the arm for it lol.

And not to keep bashing the movie because I know some people get really touchy about it, but if that line was meant to elicit laughter, then were the other really cheesy parts meant to elicit laughter also? If so, then it worked on me.

I do agree with you about the Louis and Lestat thing though. The conflicting nature between human and animal (demon?) is what makes vampire romances hot.

  23. luna says:

And does anyone else think Robert Pattinson was infinitely cuter as Cedric Diggory? I had a crush on him back in high school when GOF came out.

When the Twilight craze hit he lost all his appeal for me. But I guess even though he didn’t really have a romantic part in HP, his looks and the way he carried himself just screamed romance. He just has a romantic air about him, so maybe that’s what all the Twilight movie buzz is all about? In any case, I prefer it when it’s more subtle and not thrown in my face.

  24. JustMe says:

    Love this cantankerous, caustic bitch.

    She’s a no-nonsense, truth-speaking woman and I love her for it.

  25. Beth says:

“After the ‘film’ was over I wanted to smack her across her head with my shoe, but I do not want a (tell-all) book called Grannie Dearest written on me when I die”. I can’t stop laughing at this line. I don’t get Twilight either. Because of the obsession I tried to read/watch it but it was too corny.

  26. QB says:

How can there be a vampire movie with out a dead , passion , violence, danger ,sex?!! Thats what a vampire basically is.

  27. Salina says:

Never seen Twilight and I prob. never will. I like Ann Rice novels. Nospheratu kicks ass!- made in 1922!! I also really like the interview with a vampire movie.

  28. Ginny says:

Luna, Pattinson was SO much cuter as Cedric! I watched Goblet of Fire recently and I was surprised because he looked so much better (and I even still like him fine now). Maybe being an emoteen vampire did it.

Or maybe it was the different haircut, lol.

  29. jsan says:

Love it! I agree, after getting into True Blood, Twilight really seems for tweens. Keep the True Blood gossip coming, esp more Alexander Skarsgard!!

  30. Daniel says:

Yeah the movie in question is only about ONE kind of clan of vampire, the really ugly, scary clan, lol! I really miss the vampire the Masquerade TV show. It had great potential but got canceled early. It detailed all about the difference between the clans, etc. and it had plans to include werewolves too, just like true blood. Although it was a PG-13 version and not rated R like True Blood.

  31. Paulette says:

Lauren’s great, but what a weird pic to post of your grandson.

  32. barneslr says:

Yeah, that is a rather odd picture to post. He is a cutie, though.

  33. Here I am aged 60+ and finally I know how
much that young love you had for the “Humph ” has continued into elder years.
The man had such an honest to badness portrayal of the roles he played on screen
Just the momentary glint in his eye, especially if you were opposite,….
In my movie world : THE ” HUMPH” rules !!
