Kathryn Hahn on her WandaVision character: ‘I can tell you that she’s a nosy neighbor’

I got into watching WandaVision thanks to my friends Karen and Zakia, who watched the first three episodes with me over Zoom and kept telling me it would get better. I’m not really a Marvel person and usually see the movies once in the theater and then forget about them. However my friends love Marvel and are telling me about the timelines and backstory. (Thanks Ameerah!) I also watched the WandaVision explainer videos from ScreenCrush and they helped so much. The first three episodes were bizarre and I wasn’t sure I would keep watching, but episode four really pulls everything together in an interesting way and now I’m hooked. (For more on episode four, read Mike Redmond’s recap on Pajiba.) Kathryn Hahn plays Wanda and Vision’s neighbor, Agnes, and she’s perfect in it. There are all sorts of theories about who Kathryn could be based on the comics and the clues the show is dropping. In a new interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Hahn declined to give more information about her character and said that she doesn’t know about the fan theories because she’s never even had a computer until now! She’s not an Ann Patchett-level luddite, though, she just had an iPad before.

What are you legally allowed to tell us about your character on WandaVision
I can tell you that she’s a nosy neighbor. I can say that over and over again.

Is Agnes, your character, the villain Agatha Harkness in disguise? The clue is that you both have an oval shaped piece of jewelry at your neck.
[doesn’t answer, takes a drink]

Do you like to see people’s theories about what’s going on with your character on the show?
Not often because I do not really have access. Yesterday I got my first computer. Ever. I don’t have social media. You’re looking at somebody really off the grid.

You’ve never had a computer before?
My husband gave me his old one once. Why do I need it? I love a hard copy. I need my highlighter. I want a pencil. I had a computer intervention [from] my kids and my husband. ‘Mom, you need to get a computer. You cannot be bothering us with this stuff.’ I had a tutorial. [It] was all brand new to me because I’ve been doing it on an iPad.

[From Jimmy Kimmel Live]

After that Jimmy asked Kathryn if she could lift up her husband, who looked like a solid big guy. She got up and was wearing full jeans under her dress, which was funny. Spoiler – she was able to lift him up. They should do more stunts like that on remote interviews. That was pretty cute and I liked seeing her husband! Whenever I cover her I remember her saying that she had a dog who had to get multiple surgeries because he kept eating all her kids’ underwear. Her family sounds wacky and normal, is what I’m saying.

Kathryn is my age, 47, and she hasn’t had a computer until now! It sounds like she managed fine before with a phone and iPad and that she gets help from her kids and husband. She’s not making some holier than thou choice to not use social media or computers, it sounds like she just likes hard copies. As for WandaVision, I’ll keep watching because although I’m not heavily invested in it I like how it’s multi-layered and has such a clever premise. It makes me think. I’m deliberately being vague here to avoid spoilers but also because I don’t really know how to describe the show and I would screw up the details if I talked about it. I’ll just say I’m glad I stuck with it and that I’ll keep watching.

Just here to say I’m obsessed with this show. One of the most unique and interesting things Marvel has put out so far. I love that this is launching a more experimental era for the franchise!

    • SusieQ says:

I’m obsessed too! The boyfriend and I watch it every Friday night. It’s so nice to have that to look forward to every week!

Side note: I adore Kathryn Hahn’s character on Parks & Rec. She steals every scene she’s in!

    • Cee says:

Me too! I love Wanda and Vision so I had no doubts I would watch this show. Episode 4 was so fantastic my boyfriend started paying attention and has now gone back to watch the previous ones. We’ll be watching the series together now.

I’m not a Marvel person at all and I’m also obsessed with WandaVision. I did a bit of research on the backstory and read the recaps on screenrant for all the Easter eggs I missed. I love the ensemble cast esp. Kathryn and Dawn from Mad Men (sorry can’t remember her name, gonna go google it).

    • Case says:

There’s SO MUCH to comb through. A lot of the sitcom scene dialogue is coded and there are so many Easter eggs! It’s so well done.

  3. Julie says:

Is it wrong that I prefer the old school sitcom conceit over the “real world” they are trying to introduce? I absolutely loathe the multi cam studio audience sitcoms of the 90s when I grew up (Full House et al) but this 50s stuff is so soul filling for me right now.

    • Anna says:

Same. I have watched all the marvel films, but I also love love old sitcoms, and my home is like an antique shop threw up the 60’s and 70’s all over it. So the first 3 episodes were just so amazing. I was a bit sad to see the present world in the 4th episode. The first 3 were just so different than anything we’ve seen lately and just so wonderfully done. Soul filling indeed!

I’m in love with WandaVision! The first few episodes were definitely interesting and I agree about ep. 4 starting to pull it together. I couldn’t help but notice that the FBI identified all the “characters” except for Hahn’s, which wasn’t even presented as a mystery, it was just kind of ignored. Hmmmmm 🤔

  5. teresa says:

This show gets better every week. So the working theory is that Kathryn’s character is Agatha Harkness from the comics. She was a powerful and old witch, eventually killed by Wanda… in the comics. I can’t wait to watch the next episode today!

  6. MellyMel says:

WandaVision is such a good show! It’s easily one of the best things Marvel has done. And I loved the first three episodes and how they were a call back to earlier sitcoms. Just amazing all around.

  7. LaUnicaAngelina says:

Every time I see promos for the show, it piques my interest! Knowing that Zakia and Karen recommend it has me sold on checking it out. I have know nothing about the Marvel Universe so I’ll check out the link in the post before diving in.

  8. Becks1 says:

We are behind and havent seen episode 4 yet but I really like the show. I am not a big Marvel fan, even though i’ve seen most of the movies, so I know I’m missing a lot of the dialogue etc, but I think its really well done and enjoyable.

  9. Courtney B says:

We’re huge MCU geeks and we’re obsessed here with every detail and Easter egg. We have tons of theories! I love that they brought back Jimmy Woo (a Marvel character for decades) and Darcy. I love Kathryn Hahn on everything anyway plus it has Emma Caulfield too!

  10. grabbyhands says:

I was hopeful that it would be good since I like Marvel, but it has surpassed all expectations and I completely love it! I’ve never even been that invested in either Wanda or Vision, but I’ll be damned if I’m not now obsessed with the outcome.

And as ever, I’m in awe of how well thought out each episode is and how much attention is being paid to making sure that the events tie to the larger MCU. Watching the follow up videos on YouTube is almost as much fun as watching the actual episodes ( I love Reel Rejects, P (reviewed) and New Rockstars).

If you’re just starting, the 4th episode is a huge payoff for the slow burn of the first three episodes.

Oh, AGatha HarkNESs becomes Agnes? I like this theory!
