Will ‘Billions’ ever be the same after the Season 5 finale? (spoilers)

SPOILERS for Billions Season 5.

I got into Billions after it was on air for a few seasons, and it turned out to be one of my favorite shows in a weird way. I enjoy the excess, the petty boy dramas, the machinations and manipulations. Until Asia Kate Dillion joined the cast, I never really rooted for either “side,” but Dillion’s Taylor Mason character became my favorite, and I still root for Taylor so hard. Plus, I have always been a Damian Lewis fan. Even when he’s playing a sociopathic billionaire, I enjoy his acting and the humanity he brings to Bobby Axelrod, a character which could have been a cartoon if some other actor had played him.

Well, that’s all done now. In a very dramatic season finale, Bobby Axelrod finally got played. He was heading to jail for sure and he decided to run – or rather fly – to Switzerland. Bobby Axelrod has been defanged and exiled, and as it turns out, this was what Damian Lewis wanted. His contract was only for five seasons and he didn’t want to sign up for any more. Especially given that his wife passed away a few months ago and he has two teenagers at home, in England. From the NY Times:

Whether Bobby will return: “There’s an opportunity maybe for me to return,” he said from his home in North London. “But for now, broadly speaking, Axe has been vanquished.”

How he was recognized as Axe: “When I’m walking down the street in New York, it’s: ‘Axe, you the man!’ He’s a really despicable human being, but no one seems to care.”

The well was dry for the character: “It’s difficult to keep mining, creatively. We know who he is.”

He wants to be close to home for his kids: And after six years of spending months at a time in New York filming “Billions,” he plans to stick close to home and to his two teenage children after “we had a sadness in our family,” he said, referring to McCrory’s death, at 52, from cancer. It’s a subject he’s reluctant to talk about, his normal expansiveness giving way to terse responses. He wants to remain in London for the foreseeable future for “obvious reasons,” he said. “It is self-evident.”

But it wasn’t just about Helen’s passing: Lewis said McCrory’s death did not explain his departure from “Billions.” He initially signed on for five seasons and “always just assumed that would be enough,” he said.

He’s not looking to do American television again: [McCrory’s passing] does explain why Lewis spent much of the last few episodes appearing remotely. Actors and crew flew to England to shoot scenes that were framed within the show as a stint for Axe in Covid quarantine. (Lewis did return to New York for part of the final episode.) But he isn’t sure when, if ever, he will seek out another American series. “I don’t like closing chapters,” he said. “But it does feel like it’s the end of that for now.”

[From The NY Times]

My heart is sort of broken for him. Season five was rough – they began filming it pre-pandemic, they had to shut down for a year because of the pandemic, then they did a massive re-write on the last half of the season and it seems like they really sped up Bobby’s demise when Damian said “no mas.” In the season finale, there was a scene where Bobby almost kissed Wendy (played by Maggie Siff) and you could just see the pain in his eyes, like he wasn’t ready to kiss an actress on-screen yet.

Apparently, they’re already filming Season 6, and that will premiere in January. Mike Prince – played by Corey Stoll – is the new “billionaire a–hole” and he bought Axe Capital for pennies on the dollar in a last-minute deal. It should be interesting. Here’s a note for the writers: Taylor forgave Wendy too easily for all of Wendy’s screwups and manipulations. Taylor and Wendy need to beef, and it needs to be BIG.

I read that Damien Lewis’s wife passed away, so this move makes total sense. That said, I have zero interest in what happens without Bobby Axelrod’s character and I’m pretty disappointed this was the end game after all those crazy seasons.

  2. Red Weather Tiger says:

I read an interview with the showrunners who said Damien Lewis told them way back in Season 3 that he was going to exit at the end of his contract, and that’s when they brought in the Mike Prince character and began that plot to eventually transition Damien out while keeping all the other characters intact. All in all, it was a fine way to remove that character while still allowing for the possibility of return appearances and keep everyone else. I will miss him.

Billions is reliant on Bobby Axelrod and vice versa. Lewis burns up the screen and his presence is necessary to further any plot. It’s so damning knowing what’s happened in his personal life and I’d imagine that he can’t continue. So sad for him and for the fans of the show

Totally agree. I’m glad for him that he’s taking some time off to be with his family now that his wife is gone. But he’s a brilliant actor with such overwhelming charisma that the show really needs him to help the audience forget about all the rough edges in the writing and plotting. (I think, like Cumberbatch, he’s a bit of a screen tyrant. That’s a high complement.)

he is welcome to jump on the Bridgerton train, very British, he’d make a superb Michael, can we also talk how he was so good on Homeland?

  5. B says:

I was crushed by his departure. You’re right that he gave Axe a humanity that made many root for him. But this is the right move for him and I wish him well

  6. Snazzy says:

Oh damn I didn’t even realise season 5 was out, going to have to watch it now! I love him, not sure I will watch the show without him in it

  7. LightPurple says:

His announcement of Helen’s death was achingly lovely and heartbreaking. Understandable he wants time and space at home and with his kids.

  8. Marigold says:

I adore this show. I wanted Axe to go down but I’m glad he saved himself. I ADORE Taylor. Can’t stand Wendy but I sort of wish I had her skills. This was a good season.

Will it be good going forward? I doubt it. Will I watch it? Probably Just to see.

I’ve watched a few episodes randomly here and there of Billions with my mom. She works in financial services at the executive level so I think she enjoys it for that reason. Damian Lewis plays a scheming smarmy ahole so well and Paul Giamatti is also amazing in his role. I really need to sit down and watch the whole thing from start to finish. I think without Bobby Axelrod there isn’t much of a show to be had but I also have only seen bits and pieces here and there, maybe the supporting cast can help move it forward. But I understand why Damian Lewis is leaving, his wife just passed away, covid has messed everything up, and he has two kids he wants to be near to help them through their grief.

I was really into it for about two seasons (mostly for Damien Lewis, not gonna lie) but it’s such an 80s style nighttime soap, more plot twists than character development. I vastly prefer Succession, which is a little bit grounded in reality (the grotesque awful reality of soulless billionaires who’d eat the rest of us for breakfast without a thought but paced in a more realistic way.) Asia Kate Dillion was an amazing addition to the cast, though, and that kept me hooked for an additional season. As it is, I’m salivating for the new season of Succession, but I can get my Damien Lewis fix elsewhere.

  11. Lila says:

I was really disappointed with this. They had just gotten me on board with Wendy and Axe then nothing. Not even a kiss goodbye. Prince finally got interesting in the finale so I’ll give it another shot.

A huge no though to Taylor and Wendy fighting. I love them both and I love them as partners.
