Adam Sandler wears the same suit to everything ‘I don’t even change the tie’

I love Adam Sandler, he’s truly grown on me through watching his shows and interviews, but people don’t comment on his stories so I rarely cover him. He was on The Tonight Show this last week doing an awards show push for his very watchable basketball drama, Hustle, on Netflix co-starring Queen Latifah. I don’t really follow sports at all and I found it inspirational and entertaining. It’s an uplifting watch. Adam talked to Fallon about his recent hip replacement and told some stories about his family. He was wearing a hoodie on a late night talk show! He’s uncomfortable dressing up and said that he knew he had to get a new suit for an award he was getting, but that he put it off and ended up wearing the same suit he wore to his daughter’s bat mitzvah six months ago. He said he always wears the same suit and tie to events.

On covering AARP Magazine
That came with the hip surgery. They called me up, they said, ‘We heard.’

On hating to dress up for events
I gotta dress up. I just don’t like it. My wife dresses up, and she looks great. I should look good for her. But every time… ‘Hey, that thing’s on Thursday. I should get a suit,’ ‘Oh, it’s already Wednesday.

Sunny’s bat mitzvah was like six months ago, so I always wear the bat mitzvah suit. I don’t even change the tie. Sometimes I change my socks, but no one sees that.

[From The Tonight Show on YouTube]

Celebrity women can’t do this and the only example I can remember is when Tiffany Haddish was wearing the same white McQueen dress to everything. Men really have a “uniform” for events and they can choose to wear different colors or mix it up, but they’re not criticized if they just wear the same suit. It’s getting to the point where women can dress more casually for talk show interviews, but the equivalent to Sandler’s outfit would be a woman in a sweatsuit. That would be kind of awesome actually, I’m all for that. Remember when Pete Davidson wore a hoodie to an event and Kaley Cuoco was all dressed up? I’m not here to criticize Sandler. By all accounts he’s a standup guy and I appreciate how down to earth and just funny he is. I think it’s cool that he wears whatever he wants, I just wish the same standards were applied to women.

Sandler did a press conference recently where he talked about the negative critical response to his first few movies. He sounded fine with it and said that everything has turned out great and that “it’s okay, I get it. Critics aren’t going to connect with certain stuff.” He’s since shown that he can act with Uncut Gems and now Hustle so maybe he’s going to get that awards recognition. Not an Oscar nom necessarily, but maybe a Golden Globe.

These photos of Sandler at events last month are from the Governor’s Awards on November 19th (white dress) and the Gotham Awards on November 29th (black dress). I don’t think that’s the same suit! Maybe he’s worn the bat mitzvah/Gotham Awards suit a few times though.

I will never forget the red carpet photos of him and Kevin James in sweats and sneakers, and poor Selena Gomez all done up in a gown, heels, hair, makeup, all of it. There needs to be a middle ground.

In the example you shared, it would have gone a long way if the costars (or at least their teams) talked in advance about the outfits. I would feel uncomfortable showing up somewhere like that in a casual outfit on my own, but I would do it if I knew others were dressed similarly.

His acceptance speeches are always such a delight, he cracked me up at the Gotham Awards!!
I like him a lot as a person, and I think he’s a decent actor. I’ll always have a soft spot for him because there are certain earlier films of his I loved growing up, but there’s a whole swathe of recent films that are just painfully unfunny. I’d love him to have a moment. Uncut Gems was terrific.

Some fans and critics in the past were saying the same about Tom “Hiddles” Hiddleston’s clothing (turtleneck sweater/jumper, jeans, and gray suede ankle boots). They deduced that he was doing this to put plus upset the paparazzi, keeping them off guard so that these folks won’t get the best “money shots”. If this was true, Tom looked good and still looks good in whatever garment(s) he wears! 🤗👏🏽🥇🏆

Daniel Radcliff said the same thing. He keeps the same outfit when just out and about so paps get tired of him. That is totally different from the red carpet or doing promotions, which is a part of your job.

Sandler can miss me with this. There is nothing charming or interesting about it.

I disagree, if he’s not a suit guy, but he has one well-fitting suit that he wears when the occasion calls for it, that’s fine. His suit looks nice, it’s pressed, and the shirts and ties he has on go with it. Some people like clothes and want to express themselves that way, and some don’t. Adam is clearly someone who wants to be in his sweats, so I say let him. I also say that any actress who wants to present more casually should feel free to do so.

He’s one of those people where his interviews are great but I just can’t stand his acting.

What if women DID decide to have the same look? Think of it as like the capsule wardrobe. I am CERTAIN if someone did it in the name of sustainability and reducing waste, they could get away with it. I feel like people CAN make these choices, but they don’t – for a variety of reasons. Yes, there will be pushback because everyone has an opinion, so I feel like you’d have to be strong enough to make the statement and be ok with the inevitable fallout. Even if you were getting pressure from the industry, could you speak out about it and take control of the narrative? Think about that story last week where someone I can’t remember was talking about how expensive it is. If people continue to speak up about it, wouldn’t it normalize outfit repeats? I don’t know. I mean, I know how toxic the industry is, but in this “woke” era, I feel like people are trying to do better and make changes. People feel empowered to speak out about things that they didn’t before. Maybe I’m too naive and don’t know what I’m saying; I don’t know.

Love Adam Sandler. My all time favorite movie is Just Go With It. My daughters and I are always quoting lines from that movie. Just so funny and also sweet.

  7. girl_ninja says:

Well hopefully he gets it cleaned before each event.

  8. Jess says:

And he looks terrible. I don’t find this amusing that men get away with looking slovenly and want to be rewarded for it.

This! Going back to the Celebitchy article from last week about personal upkeep costing actresses upwards into the six figures per year.

  9. MrsG says:

Yes women don’t get to do this, they should if they want to. But I think it’s great for any celebrity not to waste so much on red carpet looks, it should be normal to have and wear less garments and repeat items.

I had a hip replacement in August and I remember being wheeled into the OR and REM was playing…I would have picked Depeche Mode or some other GenX new wave, but that’s cool 🙂

  11. Milygu says:

I love that he wears what he wants. If more people, men and women, do this it’ll normalize it for all of us as a whole. Since I hate dressing up as much as Sandler does, I eagerly await the day people stop being pressured to spend time and money on uncomfortable looks they have no desire to wear.

  12. HeyKay says:

Adam Sandler is always himself. He often dresses as if he picked up yesterdays clothes off the floor and heads out.
I have zero problem with this.
Showered, clean clothes, I am ready to get stuff done. I’m 61, I dress for comfort and function.
My days of painful high heels are over. Fight me! lol

If the Hollywood red carpet would reuse fashion, it would be a lotta of fun.
Love vintage clothes, and yes better for the planet.

  13. Homer says:

You know who else wears the same outfit for every interview for the same movie? Keanu.

I remember seeing him on Colbert and Kimmel and Kelly Ripa’s show – same suit, same tie for the most recent Matrix promos. And I think I remember this from previous press tours, too, but, I’m too lazy to go look it up.

I’ve always had a soft spot for Sandler….his SNL skits like “Lunch Lady” and the Zagats show were staples in my childhood. I’m 37 now and re-watch movies like 50 First Dates, The Wedding Singer, Happy Gilmore and Mr. Deeds pretty much yearly. I enjoy his weird humor and silly but heartfelt characters! I think he did a great job transitioning to more serious roles too.

I don’t really care what he wears, but like others mentioned I wish the same could go for women. They are dressed to the nines in a new outfit every time and get looked down upon if they aren’t, while men can show up in pajamas if they want and people think it’s cute and endearing.

  15. Gelya says:

Least his clothing budget is nil. I remember George Clooney said he rents tuxedos.
The AARP made me laugh. I just got new phone service through AARP. I get the AARP magazine. When I saw Adam I though isn’t he to young to be in there? Then I remembered Adam is a couple of years older than me.
