Gwyneth Paltrow covers the April issue of Vanity Fair, mostly to promote her big return to acting in Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme, opposite Timothee Chalamet. The film doesn’t have a release date, but Gwyneth is still talking… and talking. This VF piece made me incredibly nostalgic for these kinds of love-them-or-hate-them movie star tell-all interviews which are all too rare these days. Gwyneth talks extensively about being an empty-nester, about conscious uncoupling, about her move to Montecito and about the business of Goop. She even talks about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex too. You can read the full VF piece here. Some highlights:
Her life has changed so much since she had a major film role: “I’ve gone through a lot since the last time I was onscreen in a real way. I’m going through hard-core perimenopause, which doesn’t help. There’s this weird, deep grief that comes with letting go, saying goodbye, and then calling into question your own purpose” is how Paltrow puts it. She’s talking about empty nesting, but the same could apply to her state of personal and professional flux. “Who am I now?”
Filming sex scenes with Chalamet: “There’s now something called an intimacy coordinator, which I did not know existed,” she says. When Marty Supreme’s intimacy coordinator asked Paltrow if she’d be okay with a particular move, “I was like, ‘Girl, I’m from the era where you get naked, you get in bed, the camera’s on.’” Incidentally, Gwynothée all but waved off their intimacy coordinator, a choice actors are free to make. “We said, ‘I think we’re good. You can step a little bit back.’ I don’t know how it is for kids who are starting out, but…if someone is like, ‘Okay, and then he’s going to put his hand here’ - I would feel, as an artist, very stifled by that.”
Did #MeToo change anything? “I think so.” For one, “there are no meetings set up in hotel rooms, from what I understand, or if there are, it’s multiple people in the room. That bubble has definitely burst. I’m sure people still abuse power in Hollywood because they do everywhere, but it has definitely changed.”
Depleted in the ‘90s and early ‘00s: “I was really disenchanted with how I was treated for a lot of it,” including “the disparity between male costars and all that, which now sounds cliché, but it’s really true and it’s hard to live.”
Winning an Oscar so young: “I had the validation so early that it was almost not a good thing… It’s just not as glamorous as it looks. There’s a healthy level of ambition, like, ‘I know who I am’ and ‘I want the world,’ and then there’s another aspect that comes from damage…. ‘I want that so that a hole will be filled, so that other people will find me worthy, so that I’ll be lovable.’ ” Looking back, she says, “I think I was very much dancing between those things.”
The GOOP brand: “It used to be, ‘We can take shots at these models or movie stars ’cause it’s fun to read,’ ” Paltrow says, including fellow famous founders Hailey Bieber, Blake Lively, and her friend Reese Witherspoon, but it’s more precarious when they’re answering to investors. “You’re crossing a line because you could be impacting my P&L”—corporate-speak for profit and loss. “If it’s not true and you’re creating a negative perception about any one of our businesses, what’s your responsibility there? It’s different than just saying, ‘Look at this gross picture of Gwyneth on a beach on vacation.’”
The lifestyle pioneer: “I feel like more than being a successful actress or being a part of #MeToo, or being one of the first actresses to launch a lifestyle brand and I haven’t fully fleshed this out yet, so I’m sort of saying this to you as I’m thinking it for the first time, but it might just be that my role is to pave the way. By some instinct or curiosity or desire, I go somewhere and I hack through the path and I get the scratches of hacking through, but I make space for other people, then, to do it.” She’s just putting it out there: What if the sh-t she’s pilloried for—but that is gradually, eventually, adopted more widely—“that’s the point of my life, maybe?”
On the Sussexes: “I don’t know Meghan and Harry,” Paltrow says. I’m surprised, given how close they live. “I mean, I’ve met Meghan, who seems really lovely, but I don’t know her at all. Maybe I’ll try to get through their security detail and bring them a pie.” She hasn’t seen the trailer for Markle’s Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, either. Based on its fresh-veggie-filled emphasis on the good life, the show seems quite Goop-adjacent, but Paltrow is unthreatened. If anything, she’s inclined to defend the duchess: When “there’s noise about certain women in the culture, I do have, always, a strong instinct to stand up for them.”
There’s space for everyone: She says she welcomes Markle—and any number of Goop’s descendants—to the proverbial lifestyle space. “I was raised to see other women as friends, not foes,” Paltrow says firmly. “I think there’s always more than enough to go around. Everybody deserves an attempt at everything that they want to try.” It’s a lesson Paltrow learned early, around age 19, from Danner. She’d lost out on a much-coveted role and was griping about the actor cast instead. She says her mother cut her off, telling young Paltrow: “Another woman is never your competition” and “what is right for you will find you.”
There’s a ton more, including a large section about raw milk and Robert Kennedy Jr’s “Make America Healthy Again” agenda and Gwyneth’s somewhat murky politics these days, but she sounded like an a–hole there and I didn’t think many people would care (who gives a sh-t about raw milk when Kennedy is bringing back measles and flu deaths?) I appreciate what she says about the Duchess of Sussex and that she made the effort to show some public support for Meghan. I also sort of hope that Gwyneth and Meghan do become friends or perhaps allies. I mock Gwyneth a lot, but she’s a good ally to have.

I legit thought that was Judith Light on the magazine cover.
Yes they do resemble each other except for the eye color.. I’ve never been a fan of GP, but I do love what she said about Meghan I appreciate when women stand up for other women especially the ones they don’t know.
I just saw Judith Light last week, at my dentist’s office. She still looks great; she’s let herself go gray (shorter hair). I was surprised at how tiny she looked!
She’s fabulous on Julia as the book editor Blanche Knopf.
I always thought they styled her so wrong in Who’s the Boss – ever since she’s grown on me.
What a switch from VF after their American Hustle cover.
Gwyneth recognises and respects another successful American woman. She (and Madonna) had to go through the Brit media shitshow too so they know how awful the press over there is.
So kudos to Gwyneth for at least supporting Meghan and knowing the reality of misogyny and patriarchy. Love her line about the effect on her P&L. She’s a business woman and Meghan has described herself as an entrepreneur. These two work hard.
Surprised VF didn’t call Gwyneth a hustler. 😏
I don’t think that Vanity Fair article hit the way they and the British media thought that it would. And like I said the other day about the re-reviews of with love Meghan, some of these magazines realize that they may have impacted their ability to get on the record responses with that nonsense.
I don’t understand these constant questions about do you know this person though. Yes they live in the same area, but outside of Gwyneth and Meghan being actresses and living in the same neighborhood why would they interact with each other? Are you literally friends with all your neighbors?
If I found out that my neighbor worked in the same industry as me that lived four blocks away we would not immediately become friends because of that. Glad to hear that she wasn’t trying to entertain nonsense about knocking Meghan though, they love to say how Meghan isn’t popular and all the A-list Stars hate her. I noticed our friend Mr Mineards hasn’t had an article since the people article came out with Meghan talking about how she hangs out all the time with other moms and families in town.
A movie star who currently lives in Montecito? You’d better believe that Vanity Fair asked her about the Sussexes.
I’m kinda surprised she didn’t claim to have discovered Montecito.
She did invent Yoga, y’all.
That’s all I’ll ever remember about goop – she single handedly brought yoga to the US and made it popular (no one knew yoga before she did it, apparently). She also takes credit for people talking about food in relation to health as though nutrition and health isn’t also centuries old in some cultures. The narcissism runs deep. I’m surprised she didn’t claim to invent branding.
I don’t really deal with anything late-era Paltrow because the pretension, privilege and arrogance so often overshadow what I suspect are very well-meaning fundamentals and as someone who lives with the low-key daily challenges (and blessings, to be fair) that can come from being a multiminority in America, I just don’t have the patience.
But I do love nearly every story she tells about her parents parenting her. Her own father telling her she’d become an a– hole, and the myriad ways he and her mother sought to check her privilege and give her perspective along the way. I love this story too and will adapt and spread Ms. Danner’s wisdom that “another [marginalized group member] is never your competition, what is for you will find you” with credit to Ms. Danner and Gwyneth for sharing it.
I am also glad she is still on her journey. We all take our own way and time to being better than we were and all I really care about is if we stay committed to it. That said, I am glad I didn’t read the whole interview. There probably is still some of that old stuff that used to tick me off about her.
Gwyneth was lucky to have good decent parents growing up.
She’s 52. That’s not perimenopause. That’s just menopause.
lol 🤫🫣.. some of us like our delusions
I mean, she was in perimenopause first, lol.
I genuinely don’t know the difference. Just turned 40. I’ve had miserable periods my whole life and I’m hoping I’m getting to full meno soon.
Menopause means its been 12 months since your last period.
Fingers crossed for you. I completed menopause at 48.
If she’s still bleeding vaginally, it’s perimenopause. My body is an asshole that will occasionally eek out a light period just to reset the clock.
You can’t claim menopause until you have not had a period for an entire year, no matter how light. I am 50, and I am hopeful I am there, but I have to make it to July before I call myself menopausal.
I appreciate what she says about Meghan here, no matter how problematic I find aspects of Gwyneth’s personality.
I am jealous. I’m 53 and haven’t missed a month yet. Ugg. My mom went to almost 60. We have clearly been cursed.
I’m currently celebrating going from peri to full menopause as of this week, you’re peri until you go a year with no bleeding regardless of your age. ETA, I’m 48 this May.
Every woman’s experience is different. I’m 52 and have had a regular period my whole adult life — still do. But perimenopause can start as early as the mid-30s or as late as the mid-50s – it really varies.
https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/21608-perimenopause
For me, each and every woman who speaks openly and publicly about menopause helps all of the rest of us who suffer from the stigma and ignorance in silence and fear. So Gwyneth gets a huge pass from me…she can define, or not define whatever is happening to her body as she likes (as long as it’s not wellness bullshit she’s shilling) and in the immortal words of Taylor Swift, “she doesn’t owe anyone an explanation.”
And I think that’s the first time I’ve ever defended Gwyneth Paltrow! Life is full of surprises
LOL, same!
I have been informed that menopause occurs when you go 12 months without a period. So many women experience peri menopause in their 50s. I am 56. My periods are no longer regular. It seems everytime I believe I am past getting my period, it returns with a vengeance. Sigh. Peri menopause has been a nightmare for me. I am looking forward to menopause!
I’m also in my 50’s (52) and still get my period. Mine bop between 3-6 weeks. Every time it is a longer break, I’m hopeful it is gone but like you back with a vengeance. Hang in there.
I don’t think she’s lying or uninformed about menopause. I’m 52 and it’s still peri for me because it stops for months then starts again so I have not gone the full 12 months without a period. That’s the concrete turn into full menopause. She could very well still be in peri. Peri can go on for years and years.
Meghan, stay away from Paltrow, all of a sudden she is supporting Meghan, what is she pushing? Oh a movie.
Chris Martin has the Sussexes phone numbers, why would she have to go through serious security?
I like guys like Chris, Nacho and Michael Buble that supports them with their whole Chest, not being two-faced.
The security comment sounded like snark, tbh. I could hear her rolling her eyes.
Hm. Gwennie coming off as an actual human? Interesting. I do wish her well on this journey though, honestly.
Your comment feels like something Gwennie and her click would text each other about some tragic normal.
It’s the classic 90s mean girl algorithm that Gwennie has perfected (snark + distain + performative empathy).
You nailed it. And I love it.
Once Paltrow was tight with the Carters, I think Beyoncé got tired of her hanging all of Jay-Z, funny they’re still tight with Chris.
Remember Gwyneth’s extreme awesomeness when that man falsely sued her for the made up skiing injury? She refused to take that lying down and went to court every day. After she won she leaned over to him “i wish you well.” Lol. I can definitely see her being someone who would stick up for Meghan (and other women). Personally, I’ve always liked G.P.
Her lawyer said out loud after reading a note, “my client just told me to land this plane. No more questions’. LOL. She was pretty great at that trial and very classy to the man who sued her.
We have to care about all the health threats. Raw milk can carry parasites and more, and has been contaminated by and spread H5N1 (avian) flu. Mother Nature multitasks.
Yeah. And now RFK Jr is touting the benefits of tallow fat to cook with and even use as a moisturizer. TALLOW FAT. It’s extremely high in saturated fat which increases cholesterol and the development of atherosclerosis (plaque buildup in the arteries). I swear between not vaccinating kids, drinking raw milk and tallow, this nutbar wants to kill off most Americans.
Her response about Meghan is perfect – she has met her, she seems lovely, but she doesn’t “know” her and no, you’re not going to get her to trash talk Meghan’s show. I have issues with Paltrow for other things but this response is pretty good.
Whether GP really believes what she said or not, it’s still a great response from a PR point of view. Why should GP let the media make money off of her name by saying anything more than this? The haters out there are getting their moments of fame (which GP totally doesn’t need), but it’s the tabloids which are actually making the money.
Exactly. Others have taken the bait, Gwyneth refused.
It’s a smart response bc she’s not going to be accused of jumping on the hate bandwagon. As so many fools have been doing since the show came out.
Maybe she’s changed because she’s older, but I could easily see her as being as catty as the rest of us haha (I’m not talking specifically about Meghan but I could see her making remarks about other actresses so I’m not sure if I believe her haha.)
just a note that bird flu is found in raw milk and the current process for aging raw milk before allowing it to be sold does not kill the virus – so if she’s supporting Kennedy on the raw milk and MAHA issues, she’s just continuing to pass on ignorant and potentially dangerous “health information”
Attacks on Meghan are completely uncalled for. People like Bethenny Frankel jumping on the bandwagon for attention are pathetic. Thankfully, Meghan has real support from people all over, and I actually appreciate Gwen’s kind words.
Don’t I recall a couple of years ago that Harry & Meghan had dinner at a local or LA restaurant with Gwyneth & someone? Think I read about it here. If so, I’d say she knows them, or at least has met both of them.
No they went to the same restaurant, but not together, there was also a rumor that they had dinner with Cameron Diaz and Benji, the same night, who know if it was true.
Thanks, Jan!
Gwyneth gave a masterclass in how to answer questions about Harry and Meghan. Hopefully, others will follow suit.
Gwyneth knows how this stuff works – if VF thought she was going to take the bait and give them a snarky headline about Meghan, they thought wrong.
Just from a PR and self- brand exercise, GP wouldn’t allow a quote about Meghan to dominate her own profile. Furthermore, I would be surprised if she doesn’t try to get in on Meghan’s upcoming podcast about female founders and/or on WLM.
I think Gwyneth gave a media savvy and on brand answer re Meghan. She is talking as a category leader, graciously welcoming Meghan into her world of female life style gurus. Look I’ll take it over performative hatred.
Fellow famous founders is a very interesting choice of words to me. I wonder if she’s going to be a guest on an upcoming podcast? Hence the defence?
I’m sorry, i have tried so hard to like this woman but every word out of her mouth rubs me the wrong way. You’d think she invented the wheel or something. She won her oscar because of sleezeball Weinstein’s bully tactics on oscar voters. She may stand up for Meghan but screwed over Angelina by batting for Pitt after he abused Angie and the kids. The arrogance is next level. She’s a very privileged white woman who only caters to other privileged white women.
Meghan and Gwyneth have the same hair colorist – Kadi Lee (Meghan invested in her business too). Maybe they will cross paths.
