Ellen DeGeneres has sold her Montecito home after ‘fleeing’ America for the UK

Just a few weeks after the election last November, sources close to Ellen DeGeneres confirmed to People Magazine that Ellen and Portia de Rossi were done with America. They “fled” and moved abroad. As it turned out, Ellen – who has always been something of a real estate mogul – purchased a home in the Cotswolds, one of the most scenic parts of the UK. Ellen bought the home before the election, but once the results came in, she and Portia just packed up their entire lives in America and got the hell out. Personally, I think it’s fine for people who have the means to leave the country to do so – this administration is barely two months old and it’s like living in hell. I’m glad some Americans are getting out. Anyway, in case anyone thought that Ellen might have a change of heart, not so much. She’s slowly selling off her California real estate from afar.

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi are cutting their U.S. ties, one home at a time. The former daytime talk show host, 67, and her wife, 52, have sold their recently listed West Hollywood, Calif., home. Listed for $4,995,000, the two-bedroom, two-bathroom Spanish bungalow spans 1,691 square feet and is near the beloved Butterfly Beach.

The property was listed for sale and went into escrow on Thursday, March 20. A representative from Riskin Partners Estate Group, who curated the sale, told PEOPLE that they received “multiple offers within two days of hitting the market” on the listing and ultimately sold it for $5.2 million.

Located in the Montecito area, the intimate coastal hideaway is designed for tranquil relaxation. As described by its listing, the “spa-like” bathrooms that face two walls of windows to a private courtyard, a private terrace, and an enclosed patio offer guests calming indoor-outdoor experiences throughout the property.

According to Architectural Digest, the midcentury-modern home — built in 1954 and remodeled in 2012 — was originally purchased by the couple in 2021 for $2.9 million, making it the third property she and de Rossi purchased in the Montecito area within a year.

Other notable features of the beachside home include the chef-style kitchen with limestone countertops and cherry wood cabinetry, stainless steel appliances, floor-to-ceiling glass doors and the soundproof acoustic fencing around the property (to reduce outside noise).

The sale comes just four months after the couple took up permanent residency in Europe.

I read this like five times and I’m still confused by it. Did they sell their Montecito home or their West Hollywood home, because WeHo is not anywhere near Montecito? I think they’re describing the sale of the Montecito home and People Mag just screwed up and called it their West Hollywood home. I have no doubt that there are still other pieces of real estate left to be sold – as I said, Ellen loved buying houses all over California, especially in LA. It certainly sounds like the Montecito real estate market is hot these days, as is the tourism market in Santa Barbara and Montecito. Half of those tourists are British tabloid journalists slinking around town, begging locals to talk about the Sussexes. It also sounds like Harry and Meghan got an amazing deal on their property and I bet it’s already doubled in value. As for Ellen… yeah. She’s not coming back. And that’s fine. I appreciate people who understand that nothing will ever be the same following the 2024 election.

  1. If I had the means I would be out of here too. I envy those who can do just that.

Hey, Ellen is at retirement age. If she wants to retire in the Cotswolds, good for her. While it is quite some time away, I’m also seriously considering retiring outside the US.

  3. Luna says:

Part of me wishes I could leave but I love where I live and almost no one here is a fan of Trump. However, the US is becoming increasingly dangerous for anyone who is different or dissents from the Fox News worldview, and I understand that one day that will include me. Ellen and Portia read the writing on the wall and decided to respond.

  4. Kate says:

If I had the means I would be gone and never look back. But I’ll say this, if I moved to the UK the only place I would go is Scotland.

I’m pretty sure this is the listing, and it is in Montecito. It’s gorgeous!

Part of me is envious of those who can escape, but part of me believes that there really is no escape.
