As CB covered, Netflix had their special Tudum event on Saturday, like their own personal Comic Con where they hyped upcoming releases. Since I’m an idiot out of it inquisitive person, I got hung up on where the name “tudum” came from, and no, it isn’t embarrassing at all that I needed the interwebs to explain to me that “tudum” is the sound the Netflix app makes when you open it. Who knew Netflix was into onomatopoeia?! With that mystery solved, my attention turned to Netflix’s delightfully mysterious hit Wednesday. The campy/spooky series is finally returning this year (the first season aired three years ago!) with its second season coming out in just a few months — Part I on August 6 and Part II on September 3. At the event, Netflix confirmed that Lady Gaga has a guest starring role, and the show dropped a six-minute preview featuring Wednesday herself, Jenna Ortega, Thing, and another guest star: Haley Joel Osment.
The footage begins with Wednesday tied up in a serial killer’s basement — “who said nightmares don’t come true?” — surrounded by life-size dolls. “He’s under the delusion that I’m his next victim,” she says. “I’ll let him cherish that notion while I explain my predicament.”
A flashback from six weeks earlier then takes place, showing Wednesday spending her summer vacation doing what any normal teen would be doing: mastering her psychic ability. With her powers under control, she sets out to find the Kansas City Scalper — which we discover was her favorite serial killer as a child.
The next scene shows Wednesday hilariously unloading her weapons — and Thing — while going through airport security, a scene from the teaser trailer Netflix released back in April.
Finally, Wednesday comes face to face with the Kansas City Scalper, who we now see is played by Haley Joel Osment, and he presents her with a doll he made that looks like her.
“Let me show you some of my handiwork,” she tells the serial killer as the clip ends.
Back on stage at Tudum, the Wednesday cast announced that Lady Gaga will be joining season 2 in a guest starring role. The news marked the first time Netflix officially confirmed her casting and likely comes as a thrill to fans after Gaga was associated with the show thanks to her song “Bloody Mary” in a scene from season 1.
Additional details about who the “Born This Way” singer will be playing in season 2 were not confirmed.
True story: my father was an eccentric man, and while his day job was as a law professor, he was also an expert/worked cases related to hypnosis, mind control, and criminal profiling. However, it was always stressed to me when I was growing up that serial killers were “just his hobby.” I feel like that offbeat, macabre sensibility fits in with the world of Wednesday. And speaking of serial killers, hello Haley Joel Osment. First of all, I hope Haley has gotten the help he needs after his slur-filled, alcohol & cocaine-fueled arrest in April. He gave a sincere apology at the time, and I’m rooting for him to work on himself so we don’t have to lose him to the bigots. Second, it looks like a great part for Haley, getting to play another sad villain like when he was JD Vance on Jimmy Kimmel. I bet the “Kansas City Scalper” required less eyeliner.
I’m not surprised they’re still keeping Gaga’s role under wraps — though Gaga and Ortega did pose together open casket at Tudum Live. I hope it really is a featured role for Gaga; I think if she does more acting, it would benefit her to take more supporting roles instead of leads. Sometimes those “smaller” parts are really great in that you can come into the story, completely mess up the equilibrium, and then walk off! No character arc or growth required! Anyhow, that’s my two cents, for the millionaire.

Jenna is killing it in that trench dress thingy. It’s crazy how popular she is with gen Z. She’s the biggest part of that show’s success.
Thanks for explaining Tudum . I wasn’t going to google it…
Thrilled!! Cut open my heart and Victorian Goth written in copper script!
It looks brilliant and I’m not surprised.
I loved the first season but I’m actually bummed to hear Lady Gaga is in the second one.
I don’t think she’s a good actress (but I do think she’s a very talented musician). I couldn’t finish the season of AHS she was in, and IMHO she over-acted in House of Gucci to where it was distracting. I hope she’s grown in her acting ability since those and proves me wrong in Wednesday S2.
