Prince William believes his specific income tax amount is a ‘private matter’

On Monday, Buckingham Palace released all of their “financials” – a general accounting of the increased Sovereign Grant, an announcement of the Royal Train decommissioning, and a general promise to be keen and to engage in soft-power, even if the British public is getting much less from the Windsors these days. Alongside BP’s announcements, Kensington Palace tried to do their own disclosures. The problem is that Prince William doesn’t want to disclose jacksh-t and he thinks his inherited Duchy of Cornwall income is no one’s business. For the past two years, William’s office has refused to disclose how much they pay in “voluntary” taxes. Republic’s Graham Smith is on another tear:

The Prince of Wales has been criticised for failing to reveal the amount of tax he pays for the second consecutive year. When the King was heir to the throne, his office outlined the figure that Charles had voluntarily paid in tax. Releasing the latest accounts of the Duchy of Cornwall, however, the estate declined to give the figure that Prince William pays in tax on the surplus profits he receives from the 52,000-hectare estate spread across 19 counties.

Graham Smith, the chief executive of Republic, the anti-monarchy campaign group, said: “It is frankly contemptible behaviour not to reveal the amount of tax he pays. He earns 138 times the salary of the prime minister and our view is that the Duchy isn’t private property but should be given back to the public.”

Critics have long attacked the lack of transparency over royal finances and David McClure, the author of Royal Legacy, said they were “shrouded in fog”. The tax arrangements for the Prince of Wales are outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding on Royal Taxation, a Treasury document last updated in July 2023 following the King’s accession to the throne. It states that there is no legal obligation for the King and his heir, the Prince of Wales, to pay tax on their private income but they have done so since an agreement in 1993 with the late Queen.

The memorandum reads: “The Prince of Wales pays income tax on income arising after September 8, 2022 from the Duchy of Cornwall to the extent that it is not used to defray expenditure in connection with his official duties, or official duties performed by any members of his family.”

Under the agreement, the Prince of Wales pays tax on the profits of the Duchy of Cornwall, but only after subtracting expenses to fund his public office. With no outline of costs, however, it is impossible to know how much of his income the prince has written off as a legitimate expense and what it is spent on. Ian Patrick, the prince’s private secretary, said: “The Prince of Wales pays the highest rate of income tax.”

However, it is understood that Kensington Palace views the specific amount paid by the prince as a private matter. The Treasury document notes that the Prince of Wales is not subject to capital gains tax because he is “not entitled to its capital or capital gains”. It adds: “The memorandum of understanding provides for the possibility of variation or termination of the arrangements; however, the agreement is expected to continue indefinitely. As indicated above, The Prince of Wales has confirmed that he intends the arrangements to apply on his accession to the Throne.”

[From The Times]

“It is understood that Kensington Palace views the specific amount paid by the prince as a private matter….” How? How is it a private matter when he’s a public servant in a hereditary system, profiting from a slumlord duchy? It should also be a public disclosure because people need to know what it costs to maintain the KP offices and what it costs to maintain the Wales family. This is William through and through, and he’s rarely ever called out on his “privacy obsession,” even in cases where there’s a reasonable right to expect public disclosure.

  1. He is a taxpayer funded person and has no right to privacy on what he does (or doesn’t which is my guess) pay in taxes. Sounds like trump.

They dragged the Sussexes through the mud over their taxpayer funding – “we pay, you pose” – but this lazy heir thinks his taxpayer funded income is a “private matter”?

Is he joking? My lord, he’s going to be in bigger trouble than Louis XVI.

  2. Alteya says:

Bill does not own the duchy of Cornwall personally. Republicauk needs to scream this from the rooftops. Get mp support to rip open the finances, create real govt oversight not the ass kissing board, and put bill on a severe financial diet.

  3. Blogger says:

“He earns 138 times the salary of the prime minister”

And works 138 times less. 🙄

  4. Miranda says:

And the BM will likely never take him to task for it. Meanwhile, they can always be counted on for a rundown of just how much Meghan’s kids’ pajamas cost, because how an independently wealthy WOC spends her hard-earned money is a burning question that demands an immediate answer, dammit!

  5. Becks1 says:

I think the issue is the official vs nonofficial money. My understanding is that if he gets 20 million in profits from the duchy, and claims 18 million of that as official expenses, then he’s only supposed to pay tax on the 2 million after that.

I think that’s the issue. I think he’s writing a lot off as official expenses that should not be. For example, the kids’ tuitions, or their vacations, or Kate’s wardrobe (we know she’s been wearing fewer new clothes but who knows what she’s spending?) He’s manipulating and abusing the system and he knows it and doesnt’ want others to know it.

Adding security upgrades for the Middleton home. Even before qeii passed, over a million in taxpayer funds was spent on added security at the midds home.

How much was paid out in legal services to cover roses legal consultations during the affair reveal.

He does not want it revealed how much kp spends on bots, antisussex bots, payouts/retainers to celebs in exchange for endorsing his flop projects.

        It’s outrageous.
I wonder how much he had to pay Heidi Klum last year to attend the Earthshot awards? And a year or two before that how much did he pay Beckham to attend that year’s Earthshot?
And how much does Carol debtor Middleton get paid for styling KM?
        These questions need answering.

    • Tina says:

Also the social media costs…..aka bot and troll farms. We know KP funds a lot of the nonsense.

As someone from a former colonized country of the Commonwealth, it is bewildering to see a British ‘democracy’ where feudalism still exists, is tolerated and in many cases supported by the people, many of them very poor and struggling in a cost of living crisis to provide food and shelter for themselves and their families. The juxtaposition is glaring and the acceptance of it is confusing to me. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Good to see Republic voicing their disapproval though. I wonder how long it will take for their message to resonate or if it ever will with the broader population – ‘the UK is not a constitutional democracy’, ‘the royals continue to operate an opaque feudal system with little or no accountability’ – and when will they recognize that the media is a tool shielding the establishment in their quid pro quo arrangement. As with this article, the Times will get some readership from republic supporters by publishing some republic columns ever now and then. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Each time the media publishes an article poking the monarchy, they send it is a reminder to the monarchy of the quid pro quo arrangement.

It’s private because he knows it looks bad. Bc it is bad. He’s sketchy.

  8. Amy Bee says:

Considering he profits from leasing properties to the Government, he should disclose how much he’s pays in taxes. Quite frankly, the Duchy should be returned to the UK. Since the Royal Family gets money from the Sovereign Grant there’s no need for the PoW to be a landlord anymore.

  9. Mads says:

They pay taxes if they want to and are under no legal obligation to do so. It’s ludicrous that they can tip the Exchequer a random amount – which could be as low as 0.05%.

  10. SarahCS says:

If you don’t want to disclose taxes paid because they’re private then have at it, be a private individual with no access to all the crown lands and estates and you can be as private as you like.

Given all the anger over the current welfare bill and the desperate need for public funds this would be a great solution. Give it all back to the nation.

  11. Me at home says:

Highly recommend Norman Baker’s Book, And What Do You Do. Baker had a senior UK govt position so he’s reliable and knows his stuff.

Baker pointed out that Charles as POW expenses stables for Camilla’s horses, among other things.

Baker also points out that the no-capital-gains thing was because the POW doesn’t “own” the duchy. Can’t have it both ways. By not paying capital gains, the duchy gets to reinvest the proceeds of any sale tax-free, and earn income off the higher asset value.

    • Wesley says:

Charles, as Prince of Wales, was more transparent than William is. We know Charles wrote off Camilla’s security costs and the costs for stabling her horses because he made his accounts public. William is refusing to do this. He thinks the public has no right to k own what he’s up to & as King things will only get worse.
The Royal Family were held more to account 100 years ago than they are today, where successive toadying governments have given in to the demands of the Monarchy.

  12. Beverley says:

I guess the grift will continue until the taxpayers put their foot down.

  13. Oh come on. says:

No doubt he pays a huge amount of “voluntary taxes” to support the UK Treasury. He’s such a public-spirited person. He’s probably just being modest. Because the tax he pays on income from the lands the government gives him for free is a private, personal matter 🤡

  14. GMH says:

The sovereign grant payment should be tied to full disclosure of income and taxes by the principals of both the duchies of Cornwall and Lancaster.
