Luke Combs would ‘rather encounter a grizzly bear’ than go on the Skydeck

The Willis Tower in Chicago is the third-tallest building in the US. It’s 1,450 feet tall and has 108 floors. It’s an office building, but it also has restaurants, art installations, and a huge outdoor terrace. Its biggest tourist attraction, however, is the Skydeck on floor 103. The Skydeck features The Ledge, which is an all-glass observation box off the side of the building. Visitors can step out for pictures, views, etc. The freakiest part about it is that even the floor is glass, so you can look down and see right to the street 103-stories below you.

Fresh off of his emotional performance at the Newport Folk Festival last weekend, Luke Combs is currently in Chicago for Lollapalooza. He was the headlining act on Thursday. While in town for rehearsals, Luke and his crew did a little tourism. His team recently posted a funny video of him visiting the Skydeck, but refusing to walk out onto The Ledge.

In a video shared by himself and the Skydeck at Willis Tower on Instagram, Combs visited the famous glass-floor observation boxes that stretch out 103 stories above downtown. While his team stepped onto the platform without hesitation, the singer was unapologetically shaking in his boots.

“Here’s the thing, I don’t over promise,” he said in the clip. “If I’m not gonna do something, I’ll just tell you. Never one time when this has been brought up, never once have I been like, ‘Oh, for sure I’m gonna do that.’ Never one time. You know why? Because it’s not gonna happen.”

As his crew ventured onto the ledge, some even jumping for photos, Combs watched from a safer distance.

“I’m so excited to not go on that,” he joked. “Dude, get a picture of me not going in it. I would much rather have an encounter with a grizzly bear.”

The “Fast Car” singer even pitched his own souvenir idea: “I wish there was a sweatshirt that said, ‘I bitched out of the Willis Tower.’ I would for sure buy that.”.

”I would much rather have an encounter with a grizzly bear… I wish there was a sweatshirt that said, ‘I bitched out of the Willis Tower.’” LMAO, Luke took one look at that thing and decided that he’d choose the bear. I am with him on this one, though! I’m terrified of heights. When we visited the Skydeck a few years ago, I tepidly stepped out on the glass ledge long enough for Mr. Rosie to take a picture then literally ran off of it. I don’t think I got more than a foot in or even looked down when I was standing on top of it. Just staring at it from the line was making me want to throw up. I will never do it again, even with my eyes closed. It was such a mindf-ck! I visited the Tokyo Tower back in April, where they have small sections of glass floors throughout the top of it. My kids thought it was funny to jump up and down on them to freak me out (which I totally did). So yeah, if it’s between the grizzly or the glass ledge, I’m also choosing the grizzly.

I say bring on that grizzly! You couldn’t even get me up to the level of the SkyDeck!

  2. Tulipworthy says:

I agree with him and would never go on it.

I’m with him on this. Maybe not the bear mauling, but I would prefer a gunshot over this. The older I get, the less I can tolerate heights. A glass floor? No way! I can’t even do floor to ceiling windows anymore. In my 20’s I went on some ride on the top of the Stratosphere in Las Vegas.

I would do it once. The CN Tower in Toronto scared me but I did it. I live in Vegas & been up, outside of The Strat but NEVER the rides! It truly is a mindf**k tho, all of these. Especially if you’ve seen the new Final Destination movie, Ha!

Finally, a man who also chooses the bear!

  6. Nicki says:

Just imagining looking down through the glass floor of these kinds of structures (there’s one in Havasu dangling over the Grand Canyon) sets off my vertigo. I join you all in a hard hell no.

I’d be shaking and crawling off that thing. I like a man with a sense of humour

  8. martha says:

I guess you and Luke – and I – won’t be stepping out on the glass-floored deck overlooking the Grand Canyon, either!

You know what are really awful – those glass elevators that go up the side of a building.

    Hell to the Nope!

I’ve been out on the Skydeck of the Sears tower (its original and true name) and yes when you look straight down it messes with you. The view outward at night with all the lights is pretty great.

I totally understand where he’s coming from with this.

Many years ago I went to vegas with a friend and we went up whatever that tower is (stratosphere?). I stayed with my back to the wall and gave her my camera to take some pictures of the view. Much like the visit we did the the Grand Canyon a few days later. Heights are not for me.

I do wonder if like the whole coriander (cilantro) tasting like soap to people there’s also a thing where gravity does get stronger for some people by an edge/at a height and we actually ARE being pulled over. It certainly feels that way.

    Choosing the bear, 100%

  12. Bumblebee says:

Maybe if the bear came with me…nope…still not walking on glass over nothing!

Third tallest building in the U.S.? I remember when it was the tallest building in the world (and had a different name). C’Mon Chicago, add some floors and lets take that title back!
