Vanity Fair’s staff are in revolt at the suggestion of a Melania Trump cover

During Donald Trump’s first term, there was a lot of chatter about how none of the major American magazines would put Melania Trump on their cover. You have to understand, the Obama era was the golden age of “political spouses engaging with print media and pop culture.” Michelle Obama was on all of the magazine covers, from Vogue to InStyle to Essence to Good Housekeeping. MO also regularly appeared on talk shows. Melania Trump was not and is not welcome in those spaces at all. It felt like such a small thing, but I’m grateful for it all the same, that magazine editors around the country all said “absolutely not” when it came to whitewashing or glorifying the Trumps. Well, in Trump’s second term, there is once again chatter about Melania appearing on various magazine covers. Well, Vanity Fair’s new global editorial director has apparently suggested giving Melania a VF cover. Only VF’s staffers are in revolt.

Vanity Fair’s new boss reportedly wants first lady Melania Trump to grace the glossy magazine’s coveted cover — leaving disgruntled woke staff threatening to “walk out the motherf–king door” if it goes ahead. The fashion mag’s global editorial director, Mark Guiducci, has floated the possibility of putting President Trump’s wife on the cover of the Conde Nast-owned publication as he tries to make his mark in his newly minted role, Semafor reported. But the mere thought of having the former model as a cover girl sparked fierce backlash from raging lefty staffers.

“I will walk out the motherf–king door, and half my staff will follow me,’ one sensitive editor fumed to the Daily Mail. “We are not going to normalize this despot and his wife; we’re just not going to do it. We’re going to stand for what’s right,” the unidentified staffer whined.

“If I have to work bagging groceries at Trader Joe’s, I’ll do it. If [Guiducci] puts Melania on the cover, half of the editorial staff will walk out, I guarantee it.”

Others, meanwhile, dismissed the outrage — insisting there’s no way employees would give up such a prestigious job out of protest. “It’s all talk,” one employee said. “If they put her on the cover, people will protest and gripe about it, but I don’t see anyone quitting such a prestigious job over that. Honestly, there will be people who push back, but it’s ultimately Mark’s decision. He’s the one who will sink or swim over that choice, not the rest of us,” the employee added.

Melania was notably excluded from Vanity Fair and Conde Nast’s Vogue during Trump’s first administration. That’s in sharp contrast to Michelle Obama, who graced Vogue’s cover three times while she was first lady. Despite the snub, Melania has previously said she has “no interest” in appearing on the illustrious covers.

“Look, I’ve been there on the covers — on the cover of Vogue, on the covers of many magazines before … We have so many other important things to do than to be on the cover of any magazine,” she told Fox News. “I think that life would not change for anybody if I’m on the cover.”

[From The NY Post]

“We are not going to normalize this despot and his wife.” Exactly. Not to give these people any ideas, but I wonder why there’s such a focus on Conde Nast-owned publications? Is it because Vanity Fair and Vogue are seen as the most prestigious? I honestly don’t think any Conde Nast magazine will give Melania a cover, especially not while Anna Wintour lives and breathes. Wintour despises the Trumps, and while Wintour is out as EIC of Vogue, she still wields enormous power within Conde Nast. If Melania wants a magazine cover so badly, she should go for a non-Conde Nast magazine. But even then, I suspect editors would still say “absolutely not.”

Why would they put her on Vogue – she hasn’t been seen since the second inauguration and she’s not doing any public work that would put her in the spotlight. Weirdly, her husband has been doing all of the duties that used to be reserved for the First Lady, such as redecorating.

Also lol forever to Melanie “I’ve been there on the covers — on the cover of Vogue, on the covers of many magazines before” no girl, but I did see you on the cover of the Post right next to some convicted child traffickers, is that maybe what you are thinking of?

    • Smart&Messy says:

This! She is not doing the job of a first lady, and I actually don’t mind. Not just because they are despicable, but the position is not elected, it’s her husband who got the job. I think the same about Keen actually. Marrying someone should not come with a job description. Being paid for something you refuse to do is another story.

      • Harla says:

I would say that in regards to Kate, her marriage did come with a job description and she was well aware of that when she said “I do”. It’s after being outed as a racist and all around mean girl, that she’s trying to rewrite said job description.

      • Bqm says:

She was trying to rewrite it before being outed. She’s always just wanted to be a stay at home mom who shows up for some tiara events and Wimbledon. People have grumbled about it from day one when she retreated to wales while William was flying.

    • Betsy says:

Melania *was* on the cover of Vogue back in… W’s era? Whenever these two pathetic wastes of carbon had Barron. You know, when Trump was raping Stormy Daniels. (She doesn’t call it that, but jeez if you read the account, that’s what it sounds like to me. And that’s who he is so…)

  2. Thatgirltothere says:

I hope they stick to their guns. So many in media have capitulated and are trying to make that family normal and it’s disgusting. They are horrible, trashy, racist who want to destroy this country and rule over us! None of they can be celebrated.

  3. The only cover she belongs on is a most wanted poster for her part in trumps crimes against America!

  4. Neeve says:

Why did I think that VF was a snobby conservative magazine and audience the exact type that would love a Trump!?

    • Myself says:

Longtime former VF editor Graydon Carter HATES Tr*mp. He’s the one who called him a short-fingered vulgarian in the 80s (I love that so much) in Spy magazine, and he carried his hatred with him to VF. So for a few decades, the reputation of VF has been “hate tr*mp”. Times change and all, but the history there is…not favorable.

  5. Mia says:

I’m sure Hustler Magazine wouldn’t mind putting her on the front cover.

  6. NotMika says:

That NY post article sure doesn’t hide its bias. The “sensitive” editor “whined”???? That kind of editorialising used to get you kicked out of journalism, but it’s all good in Rupert Murdoch world, I guess.

  7. Brassy Rebel says:

I guess he’s not interested in selling magazines if he wants to put her on the cover. Atp, most of America agrees with the staff: absofrigginlutely NOT. And he must want to give Anna Wintour a stroke. Maybe the KKK needs a cover girl for their organization’s publication.

  8. ParkRunMum says:

I’ve read two biographies of Anna Wintour in the past month whilst we went on holiday. She is a fascinating study. I feel fairly safe saying she will most likely block any appearance of any Trump on any Condé Nast cover. She’s a very savvy operator in having cultivated a network of Democratic Party donors and even been offered Ambassadorships herself at various times, but clearly preferred publishing to diplomacy, and you could make the case that’s where she makes a bigger impact. There simply is no upside to cultivating the Trumps: it’s too late to change their basic outlook, which is aligned with the far right, by appealing to their unquenchable need for exposure and limelight. And she has publicly vowed never to let Trump attend the Met Gala again — bearing in mind when he did attend, years ago, he bought the cheapest possible seats. The cover on which Melania did appear was 20 years ago, when Trump was still a Democratic Party fundraiser / networker, and it may be the case that the designer who made the dress gave Trump a discount on it, provided it appeared in Vogue. Anna does find a balance between all those vested interests, with expert skill.

This is really interesting, thanks for sharing. I know very little about her beyond the outward image and the odd thing that appears in the press.

  9. Mireille says:

“We have so many other important things to do than to be on the cover of any magazine,” she told Fox News.
–Echoing the sentiment of everyone else here. WHAT DOES SHE DO??!!!! Seriously, someone tell me what does she do? And calling her a cover girl and former model is HIGH-larious.

  10. Betsy says:

I hope this _____ isn’t put on the cover. Stop normalizing fascism! It wasn’t cute or glamorous eighty years ago, it isn’t cute or glamorous now.

Separately, I miss real magazines. Vogue in the 90s. Mademoiselle. Mirabelle I mostly missed. Lucky and InStyle were both insipid but you knew what you were buying and it delivered. I miss reading smart articles in a printed form coupled with makeup coverage and such (New Yorker still does the lord’s work when it comes to smart articles). I would get a subscription if more general “ladies interest” magazines existed, but they’ve all gone under.

    • SIde Eye says:

Oh I miss this too! Lounging at the pool with a Vogue in the 90s was pure heaven! I miss the Supermodels – real models like Cindy C., Naomi Campbell, Iman, or Linda Evangelista. I stopped reading Vogue when they put Kim K. on the cover. For me that was a line they crossed and I never forgave them for it.

There are a few non-models I would love to see on covers (and some have had them) like Julianne Moore, Viola Davis, Halle Berry, Princess Ameerah, or Melissa McCarthy. For me it’s not just a looks thing (though all these women are beautiful) it’s are you interesting? Do I care about what you have to say? As a general rule, I don’t like this trend of putting actresses on the covers, and a lot of them are just shilling their side hustles.

I think a big part of the problem is since the Adriana Lima era, there are no more interesting models. They’re now way too thin, not sexy, and downright boring, There’s absolutely nothing remarkable about them. I remember a time when models were so interesting and sold magazines. Then the trend of putting actresses on the cover started, and it descended into reality stars now. It’s depressing. I’m still salty about the Kim K. cover. For me, it represents so much more – like when Jerry Springer beat Oprah in the ratings. I saw that as the beginning of the downfall of American civilization. Our appetite for trash content will be the end of us.

The other day scrolling through Instagram I saw a gorgeous model. I clicked and discovered she’s not even real. She’s AI generated. Like why when there are so many beautiful women in the world.

      • SIde Eye says:

I’ll add as far as non-models go Lupita Nyong’o’s first Vogue cover was absolute fire and I still have it! It’s probably my favourite Vogue cover of all time.

    • ollilesmom says:

I miss InStyle and Entertainment Weekly (I know, it’s online but it’s not the same!). At least Better Homes and Gardens is still publishing a real magazine . I don’t know for how long though. They have started putting out a printed magazine every other month for some slower months (like the July/August issued).

    • Karen says:

I get print Vanity Fair still. The September issue with Jennifer Aniston is so skinny, it’s barely a magazine. If they put a Rump person on the cover they will lose subscribers and then will lose advertisers. The new editor’s letter said he wants to shake things up, I think. I doubt Melania would do it anyway, unless it was on the Hollywood/Oscars issue and DJT was getting an award!

I also loved magazines in the 1990s (Allure, Mirabella, Marie Claire, others). I used to get a few or more magazines a month and was loyal about resubscribing; I’m down to VF and a digital subscription or 2. We all got used to getting ever-changing content for free online.

      • Ciotog says:

I get the print version of VF too–I read it on the exercise bike. But I would cancel if she was on the cover.

This new “global editor whatever” didn’t even thank Radhika Jones, the departing editor, in his first editor’s note. Though her sister’s book was recommended in this issue.

  11. wendy says:

are we really still pretending that she was a … model?

  12. ollilesmom says:

I can’t believe that these people are our “first family”. This is not normal. Nothing about this is normal.

  13. Lianne says:

The right can start their own magazines, if no one buys them thats not our fault.

  14. Jaded says:

“former model”??? Oh puhleeze….former soft pr0n model, former illegal immigrant, former escort to rich men, current grifter. Let’s call a spade a spade here.

  15. Emster says:

If this happens, every subscriber cancel and everyone else walk through any place selling it and brush the cover with a smear of lotion or oil (or poop) or gum. FAFO VF.

  16. steph says:

I just sent a bluntly worded inquiry in response to their subscription renewal notice. Will be interesting to see how they reply.
