Keir Starmer might cancel King Charles’s US state visit over Greenland threats

A few days ago, the New Yorker ran a piece called “What It’s Like to be Trump’s Closest Ally Right Now. It was a discussion about the extremely strained “special relationship” between the United States and the United Kingdom. Keir Starmer and his government have bent over backwards to placate, flatter, and manipulate Trump. They’ve been able to tease out some promises from Trump, who promptly forgets about those promises and just does whatever horrible thing he was going to do anyway. According to the New Yorker, the British foreign-policy people are at their wit’s end over almost everything to do with Trump, but the thing that’s floored them the most in recent weeks was Trump’s invasion of Venezuela and the kidnapping of Nicolas Maduro. Still, one British policy expert told the New Yorker that there’s nothing they can really do to break Britain’s historic ties with the US: “With this Administration, you would essentially be burning your bridges. You would be destroying your access. You might even start to knock away at some of the foundations, in terms of the military coöperation, the intelligence coöperation.”

Well, over the weekend, Trump announced some splashy new tariffs, basically threatening to decimate Europe’s economy and America’s economy if Europe doesn’t get on board with Trump “buying” or seizing Greenland. Denmark, the UK, the EU and NATO leaders are absolutely furious and calling on the people around Trump to get him to drop all of this sh-t. It’s gotten so bad that Keir Starmer is considering canceling King Charles’s planned state visit to the US.

Keir Starmer is facing demands to cancel the King’s state visit to the US after Donald Trump threatened to impose punitive tariffs on countries opposing an American takeover of Greenland. The president has alarmed Nato allies by warning that opponents of the move will be hit with levies starting at 10 per cent from February 1, potentially rising to 25 per cent by June if they refuse to comply. Trump singled out the UK, France, Germany and Denmark in a post on his social media platform.

The intervention has provoked fury among Western leaders, with renewed concerns that Mr Trump intends to dismantle the military alliance that has underpinned global security for eight decades. MPs have joined the backlash, calling for the planned spring visit by King Charles to Washington to be scrapped.

Senior Tory Simon Hoare said: “The civilised world can deal with Trump no longer. He is a gangster pirate.”

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy stressed this morning that Britain’s support for Greenland’s sovereignty was “non-negotiable”. “We believe it is wrong, we believe it is deeply unhelpful,” she told the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg of Mr Trump’s tariff threat.

However, when pressed on the state visit, she only referred to the “depth” of the Transatlantic relationship.

Economists have warned the UK will be back on “recession watch” if the US proceeds with tariffs. Senior MEPs have cautioned that the EU-US trade deal will be frozen in retaliation, raising the prospect of a full-blown global trade war.

Sir Keir issued some of his strongest criticism of Mr Trump last night, having invested considerable effort in maintaining cordial relations with the president. The Prime Minister said: “Our position on Greenland is very clear – it is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and its future is a matter for the Greenlanders and the Danes. We have also made clear that Arctic security matters for the whole of Nato, and allies should all do more together to address the threat from Russia across different parts of the Arctic. Applying tariffs on allies for pursuing the collective security of Nato allies is completely wrong. We will, of course, be pursuing this directly with the US administration.”

[From The Evening Standard]

“Gangster pirate” is way too kind for what Trump actually is: batsh-t insane, demented, stupid, evil and a Russia’s useful idiot. Trump doesn’t care about NATO or the EU or another country’s sovereignty. He would rather blow up everything and destroy every historic alliance rather than let this Greenland thing go. We’re way beyond the 25th amendment, but it would be nice to see some of Joe Biden’s biggest critics chime in at this point. When’s George Clooney going to publish a NY Times column about Trump, you know? As for Starmer possibly canceling the king’s state visit to the US… it would be funny if it happens, and I suspect that Starmer will use the state visit as a bargaining chip in the days and weeks to come, because Trump actually does want to host that state visit (and show Charles all of that gaudy gold sh-t he’s installed in the Oval).

Charles could have a “relapse” and call in sick. If they’re looking for a way to do the right thing without saying what needs to be said.

Am all for all the betrayals being met with sanctions and scorn. There’s plenty that can be done.

    • sunniside up says:

I hope so. I would hate to see the King (Starmer) give in to bullying.

    • Miranda says:

I think this is a case where it NEEDS to be said, though. Trump will deliberately misinterpret anything else, probably accusing everyone who’s currently opposing the visit of making Charles’s cancer come back. It has to be explicit: “You’re a crazy asshole committing crimes against humanity and making the kind of threats we haven’t heard since Hitler, and we are no longer enabling you.”

      • KC says:

        Exactly. Don’t soft soap it.
Hopefully the Big Macs will kick in since it doesn’t sound like Congress with get the backbone to call for the 25th amendment. All they’d need to do is show his letter to Prime Minister Store.

      • BeanieBean says:

This. Be like the Danish MEP, tell trump to f*ck off.

      • Anne Maria says:

We’re British, it would be ars*e hole. The visit should be cancelled with a short ‘we don’t think it is appropriate to go ahead with it at this time’.

  2. Me at home says:

Charles needs to be washing his hair instead of visiting. Gangster pirate is too kind and yes, evil, demented and Article 25 all apply.

    • line says:

the term is fascist leader, using the words gangster to describe him and his entire administration and the Republicans serves to mitigate their actions.

      • BeanieBean says:

But he is demanding $1billion to be a ‘member’ of his shadow UN, so it’s paying protection money to Don Corleone.

    • PrincessK says:

Charles should go and deliver one of his excellent speeches and talk about the importance of American virtues and the need for the right kind of leadership to deliver them.

  3. Tessa says:

Is peggs still going to the United States this year.

    • ClammanderJen says:

I’d bet on it. While the Trump Admin and the Kremlin are definitely using the same authoritarian playbook and want to destroy the NATO alliances, the real driver for the US is oligarchic statecraft. Trump is being puppetted by the donor class, and those tech bros also want to destroy any international institution that puts constraints on their activities (just like Russia’s oligarchs). If you play ball, you get to be in their inner feudal circle.

And who would looooove to be in the inner circle?

      Effing Pegs.

I could totally see him currying favor with Zuck and Elon and pretending he also works — while also reaping the benefits.

  4. Jais says:

I mean sure. If the threat of Charles not visiting is enough to get Trump to not just take Greenland great. But I wouldn’t trust Trump he’d just being it back up again.

  5. Jay says:

Good – I think that countries need to stop dealing with the US as if they are still a trusted ally and superpower. They are not, sadly – at least not right now. And I would imagine that Charles wasn’t looking forward to having to pretend to admire the Orange monster’s new ballroom or whatever.

The funniest ( and thus, my hoped for outcome) is that the foreign office compromises and sends the Wales over instead. They got on so well at the dinner, and William (ahem, pardon, “friends of William” ) is always briefing reporters that when he’s king, he’s going to handle things differently. Well, this is his shot! He’s going there for the football anyway, right?

  6. Stay home Chuckles and save yourself from having to be in the “gangster pirates” lair!!

  7. Brassy Rebel says:

Appeasing a monster never gets you anything but more monstrosity. If they want to use the trip as a bargaining chip, fine, but he’ll just delay the invasion. They have already been much too tolerant of this asshole. They never should have hosted him for a second state visit.

  8. aquarius64 says:

Starmer will back off on that threat of no royal state visit because Trump’s DOJ holds the Epstein files. If the UK doesn’t want more evidence of Andrew and Fergie’s involvement with Epstein revealed to the public and potentially other high profile Brits who may be involved (especially those in government) thar state visit is going through.

    • Thinking says:

Why would Starmer or even the rest of the UK care about exposing Andrew and Fergie though? They’re damaged goods at this point.

I can see him trying to protect someone in his own party, but everybody already knows Andrew and Fergie are the worst.

    • Lightpurple says:

      they have already been exposed.

    • sunniside up says:

Of course they will still cover up the American republicans.

    • abritdebbie says:

The leader of the Green Party in England has come out today with a really strong message. This is Zack Polanski. He has said that the UK needs to have a plan on how we will deal with US troops on UK soil if the USA invades a NATO country as they will immediately be enemy troops. He also says that everyone needs think about the option to leave NATO and reform without the USA.

Keir Starmer might look like he is placating the US, but I’m really hoping that behind the scenes things are happening.

  9. Shonnatta says:

Lol NATO and western leaders have no problem stealing from africa , asia and south America. Now they have problem when it comes to white countries. All tech bros wants Greenland for data mining and space war. Those american billionaires doesnt want to give up.

    • Morgan says:

This! And I’ve got more than a little side eye for the continued snark at the Clooney op-ed/Biden-presswashing: as if that head in the sand attitude, isn’t clearly undermined by the fact that had that administration not continued to fully support a genocide, we wouldn’t be here.
The pearl clutching at ongoing sociopathic behavior, feels a little like failing an open book test; since now that said behavior is aimed in every direction, as opposed to “over there”.

    • Mightymolly says:

I’m not saying this to negate your very valid point, but Greenland’s population is 90% Inuit.

      • Morgan says:

So close to the point and yet still it evades you…
The Venn diagram of the bloc of finger pointing homegrown “liberal” hat knitting folks determined to continue to deny THEIR culpability in current events, by not making genocide of Black and Brown people a red line in casting their votes, and the responses of EU/UN leaders to the unhinged tyrant in the oval office’s intentions towards Greenland: is a circle.
        Hope this helps.

  10. Lightpurple says:

Enough with the “might,” CANCEL. As our government has clearly fallen, the world needs to stop placating our dictator. Cancel everything AND impose sanctions. Boycott US products. Hit us where it hurts his pals who propped him up.

  11. Brassy Rebel says:

Exactly 💯! Even if he wasn’t a deranged lunatic, he’s unlikely to abandon this Greenland fever dream. He wants those rare earth minerals. And this is Putin’s dream as well. The resources AND it blows up NATO. It’s a twofer.

This is meant to reply to LIGHT PURPLE.

  12. Truthiness says:

This is slightly off topic but Senate Maj Leader John Thune has been fighting Trump behind closed doors this weekend, on Greenland and a couple different things. Senior Republicans are telling Trump that if he invades Greenland or attack any Nato ally it will be the end of his presidency. Both chambers have bipartisan bills to block funding for military efforts there.

John Thune isn’t MAGA, he never supported election lies, refused to go to a Trump rally in his state and he threw out some nominees that were ridiculous. I don’t like him but he has a spine and has quietly stopped Trump before.

  13. Bloemheks says:

Until Europe is ready for a conflict, they need to keep pretending to play ball unfortunately. Getting to the point I’ll be surprised if Trump hasn’t started WWIII by 2028.

  14. QuiteContrary says:

    How is this our reality?????

    It is enraging.

  15. Kiki says:

I wonder what people will do when he threatens to invade Narnia. The Epstein files must be very wide reaching. No other explanation for any of this being allowed to continue.

  16. Siri says:

The British are cowards. They failed to show strong support for Canada. They will do nothing. Their power on the world stage is a thing of yesteryear. They are a lonely little island that must defer to the US since Brexit and the loss of QE2.

They have no strong leaders anymore. Their glory days are over. When William becomes King, he will be Trump light. There is no one over there anymore who connects to the people and commands authority. Great Britain no longer exists. You guys probably need to work on that and stop being the US little stooge.

  17. L4Frimaire says:

It will be a humiliation for the UK to do a groveling state visit but that’s what they’ll do to try to appease the orangutan in the White House. They’ll get nothing out of it but who knows if it will go ahead or not. He’s still determined to seize Greenland and he shows no signs of backing down on this. No one wants this except his inner circle and Russia, but no one is reigning him in.

  18. Isabella says:

We have a lot of problems in the U.S. Charles and William, go visit a Commonwealth nation for a change. Trump is very unpopular and insane. You are ruining your brand. .

  19. BeanieBean says:

Cancel it. You can’t appease an evil madman; it’s been tried, doesn’t work.

  20. HeatherC says:

Starmer should look back at Neville Chamberlain. Get a ouija board or a medium. Ask him how well a policy of appeasement worked.

  21. jferber says:

In all my life I never anticipated the U.S. becoming a rogue nation, threatening to attack a NATO ally. And because the whiny baby did not get the Nobel Prize. He’s throwing a giant temper tantrum which mapy very well destroy the world order. He has NO RIGHT to do this. He needs to be stopped NOW.
