Last weekend, Catherine Harding and her 11-year-old daughter Ada Law were having breakfast in a São Paulo hotel restaurant. They were there to attend Lollapalooza Brasil, and even more specifically, Ada wanted to see her favorite artist, Chappell Roan. When Ada thought she spied Chappell at the same hotel restaurant, Ada walked by Chappell’s table and smiled. The child did not approach Chappell or ask for an autograph or anything – she just wanted to see if it was really Chappell. Shortly after, bodyguard Pascal Duvier went over to Catherine and Ada’s table and began aggressively lecturing Ada and Catherine about Chappell’s privacy and how celebrities should never be looked at by children and how Catherine is a bad mother for allowing Ada to walk past Chappell’s table. Ada’s stepfather, Brazilian superstar/footballer Jorginho posted about it on Instagram, calling out Chappell for her bodyguard’s nasty behavior. Chappell then posted a video from bed in which she vaguely denied that the bodyguard worked for her personally and suggested that the guy worked security for the hotel. The hotel backed up Harding and Jorginho’s version of events. The Mail did some digging and discovered that the bodyguard in question is a familiar bodyguard-to-the-stars, Pascal Duvier, and that he used to work for Kim Kardashian. Well, now Duvier has posted a message on his Instagram:
I do not normally address online rumors, but the accusations currently circulating are false and constitute defamation.
I take full responsibility for the interactions on March 21st. I was at the hotel on behalf of another individual, and I was not part of the personal security team of Chappell Roan. The actions I took were not on behalf of Chappell Roan, her personal security team, her management, or any other individuals. I made a judgment call based on information we obtained from the hotel, events I had witnessed in the days prior and the heightened overall security risk of our location. My sole interaction with the mother was calm and with good intentions, and the outcome of the encounter is regretful.
First of all, LOL. Not a bodyguard-to-the-stars acting as if an 11-year-old child walking by Chappell Roan’s table was a well-known security threat who was being watched by multiple security apparatuses. He’s also suggesting that the hotel had told private security to watch Catherine, Jorginho and 11-year-old Ada. Second of all, even if he wasn’t being directly employed by Chappell Roan, HE WAS ACTING ON HER BEHALF. Random security guys being employed by (presumably) Lollapalooza Brasil are not going to aggressively bully a child to tears in a hotel without their primary protectee’s say-so. Third and last thing: this explanation reeks of a payoff for Duvier to fall on his sword because Pink Pony Karen is being dragged to hell and back this week. Too bad, the dam broke. Now people are learning about all of the lies she’s been telling this whole time.

Makes sense that he’s a contract employee working for an intermediate security company. The intermediate w/b designated as the ‘Employer of Record’ (handles benefits, compliance, pay, payroll taxes, etc.). But the client on the other side of the service contract would direct daily work at a location determined by the client. Seems that would be the only way his statement – “actions I took were not on behalf of…any other individuals…” – could be considered truthful.

His explanation/apology just makes the whole thing worse. He made a judgment call because a child walked past Chappell Roan and smiled. He harassed an 11-year-old child! How was she a security threat? If he had talked to the mother calmly, her daughter wouldn’t have been crying.
The story doesn’t make any sense because they’re lying and trying to fix it in real time. If you notice the story from the little girl’s family has not changed in the past 4 to 5 days. She saw her idol, didn’t say anything or approach her, walked past and smiled, went to sit back down at her own table for breakfast and then was approached and berated.
They haven’t changed it to tell us how well maybe she actually went and asked for a photo. Or, well maybe she actually screamed out Chappell I love you, or anything else. Same story.

She’s lying and has been lying so behaving as if people are just being unfair to this poor woman doesn’t match the reality of what occurred and why people have the strong response that they have had. Also having a bunch of other documented instances of her behavior in the same way shows that it’s a pattern of behavior which means that the benefit of the doubt isn’t going to her.

Agreed, Wendy. I’m not part of any Chappell Roan fan “squad”, but it seems she cannot win here. I just cannot get this exercised over this one overwrought account of a *different* celebrity blowing up his rich wife and stepdaughter’s own account all over social media, and everyone bending over backward to assume that they were traumatized in the extreme and so Chappell Roan must be some evil person who is lying about everything. Whatever. Stuff happens. Any normal kid who has ever hung out around a stage door and hustled to try to get an autograph has been through worse. Move on, little girl. As indicated by the fact that soccer guy’s family was there, there *were* a bunch of rich people in the room. Probably a bunch of bodyguards too. Who knows what happened. I refuse to give another moment’s concern to some spoiled rich kid just not having every whim catered to and the endless rage cycle pouncing on another rich celebrity because we’re in the backlash phase of her pop moment. There’s real suffering going on, and this ain’t it.
If you think people don’t like Chappell because of this “one” story, you haven’t been paying attention.
It feels like there was actually a very obvious way to handle this situation that would have been a “win,” calmed everyone down and won her some good faith points, if what Roan has been saying is true, and this bodyguard had nothing to do with her:
1) Find out what happened.
She and her team were present, and surely one of them saw some big guy harassing a child a few tables away, after all, their job IS to at least be aware of the surroundings and any possible dangers, and some big dude is yelling at a kid a few tables away, they would have noticed. And CR has enough star power to find out who that was, just as the internet was able to find out quickly.
2) Make her initial statement with ACCURATE info (that he was hired by Lollapalooza, wasn’t assigned to her directly, whatever it is) instead of starting more rumors (that he was hotel security, as she said in her post) and spreading misinformation
3) Apologize directly to the child and her family (instead of vague “I would never do this to a child” statements)
4) Offer them VIP tix/accommodations/etc. to her next show, or send her a big merch package with signed items, etc., so show her 11 year old fan she cares about her fans and appreciates this child’s devotion to her
It really wouldn’t have been hard for her to do things in a better, more meaningful way. She simply chose not to.
Yeah maybe she should smile more. Or wear prettier dresses and soften her makeup. She could wrap all her statements in pretty pink boxes with pretty pink bows and sprinkle them with undying gratitude for being allowed to be visible and female at the same time. Perhaps she could focus on being a really nice girl while performing at 100% every night after personally interviewing and background checking every person in a paid position in every building she enters while doing press, writing her next album, and maintaining the physical and emotional stamina to keep us warm, fuzzy, and entertained at all times. Honestly, if you can’t reason or strategize your way out of a wet paper bag, then it’s best to say nothing. All of these lies are compounding this situation and may well result in the hotel releasing footage which will not be good for this dude or his boss. Furthermore, if you want to issue a lengthy explanation about your unprofessional behavior, please allow a PR pro to read it first. Bodyguards need to be hyper aware of the surroundings and we see over and over security failing to do their job. Example: when Ariana got rushed during a red carpet of Wicked and it was her female costars who protected her. See also Tom Holland with Zendaya. He is a small dude but he is doing security for her by looking around everywhere and being ready.

Exactly, making statements like that and the hotel might have grounds to sue. IMO the Hotel has been absolutely professional and handling the situation well. They sided with the family right away and didn’t dither. They know their clients and it’s not CR.

Having worked around celebrities and various kinds of security in the US on a tv show filmed mostly in NYC, I would venture a series of guesses: 1. The hotel will not release the footage as that would alienate their other (normal) guests and would constitute an actual security risk. 2. The sweet little girl posed no risk to this singer or anyone else. My god. She didn’t even take a picture, and that is the *only* thing that might have plausibly justified a word — a very polite word — with her mother, to ask her to delete it, to keep their location private. But they’re not even saying that. She literally just *smiled*. 3. Over-reacting to normal people doing normal things is — as another commentator observed — more likely to expose his client to risk, whoever his client is. 4.
