Pedro Almodovar wonders if Jacob Elordi is a ‘sex symbol or a respected actor’

In the past six months, I covered many of Jacob Elordi’s interviews as he promoted Frankenstein and Wuthering Heights. He came across well, in my opinion – he’s a mama’s boy, he’s a cineaste, he loves working with women and he has ambitions beyond being a pin-up. I don’t even find him pretentious, I find most actors his age pretty pretentious. Now, is he a good actor? Possibly, if given the right material and the right director. He just earned his first Oscar nomination for Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, as well as several other award nominations for the same role (the Monster). However, following up Frankenstein with Wuthering Heights – which was financially successful but poorly-reviewed – has caused some confusion and consternation about Elordi’s talent and whether he’s really a “star.” One of those confused people? Iconic Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar.

Pedro Almodóvar is questioning if Jacob Elordi‘s rise to acclaim in the entertainment industry has occurred because he’s a “sex symbol or a respected actor.”

During an appearance on the La Pija y la Quinqui podcast, the Spanish filmmaker was encouraged to collaborate with the Oscar-nominated actor in a future project. Almodóvar admitted that Elordi’s stardom is “real,” but that some of the projects he’s taken part in have led him to question if he’s become popular solely for his acting skills.

“I can now see that Jacob Elordi’s stardom is indeed real,” Almodóvar said, per the HuffPost. “I was still wondering whether he was a sex symbol or a respected actor.”

The Room Next Door director specifically described Wuthering Heights, which Elordi recently starred in, as “very bad.” However, the filmmaker noted that it wasn’t the actor or his co-star Margot Robbie’s fault that he disliked the film. He added, “They do what they can.”

He also discussed Elordi’s Oscar-nominated performance in Frankenstein, noting that the titular role is a “comfortable” part for an actor to take on. Almodóvar also argued that Guillermo del Toro’s take on the classic story depicted the monster of Frankenstein in a different, more attractive light.

“We still need to see him, at least I do, in another role that demands more from him,” Almodóvar added.

Weirdly, the role which made me sit up and notice Elordi’s talent was his turn as Elvis in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla. Elordi wore that role so lightly, and he worked that character with such a deft touch. But I get it – after seeing Wuthering Heights, I’m sure a lot of people in the film industry are like “eh, wtf??” I actually agree with Almodovar that we still need to see Elordi stretch as an actor, and I hope he chooses his next projects wisely. The worst thing for him right now would be “convincing himself that he’s a leading man” and not taking up offers to do more offbeat/supporting roles which would make him grow as an actor.

Kaiser, you’re so right about that.

He is at such a crucial point in his career, smart choices with his next projects, roles that allow him to stretch in different ways, show what he’s capable of would be great.

But it would be so easy for him to lean into the superficial ‘I’m a leading man’ thing and Glenn Powell it.

Don’t forget he was in “Saltburn” also. But he didn’t really register much there either compared to the bathwater drinker.

  2. Mightymolly says:

Is he another Chalamet waiting to happen? Bursting onto the scene as a new It Boy with potential and tons of audience goodwill wanting him to succeed, but then … buhbuhbubum … a KarJenner enters the chat.

Mein Gott I felt that frisson of fear down my back reading your comment. 😂😂😂

Personal opinion: chalemet or whatever isn’t especially talented and absolutely not good looking, though he says he is. Lol whatever. He’s rich and successful and I’m sure Elordi will be too. I haven’t seen him in anything, he kinda looks wooden aspect wise but I’m sure he’ll do ok. Of course the KarJen attracted him. This must be their new strategy.

Can’t you be both? That’s a limited way of thinking — if you’re sexy, you can’t be a serious actor. Surprising someone is still thinking like that.
But I guess I don’t get it. Eldori to me isn’t sexy. He’s attractive and a good actor. But he doesn’t smoulder.

  4. Sasha says:

He is NOT a good actor. I thought his Monster was boring and uninspired. He is not handsome with his butthole-sized mouth and witch’s chin. All the hype is about his height. He is also already quite arrogant, if you pay close attention, and a well-known cheater. Personally, I think he uses girls and dates the ones with the connections. Joey King kicked him out. He did Zendaya dirty. Let’s stop celebrating this very average and mediocre man.

Butthole sized mouth! Not only did you make me cackle like a loon, you compelled me into my first CB response ever. Brava!

If there’s one actor that’s done a fantastic job transitioning from sex symbol to legitimate actor, it’s Robert Pattinson. How he’s crafted his career arc should be studied. If Elordi wants to model his acting trajectory after someone, I hope he takes the Pattinson route rather than the Powell route (which favors oversaturation).

  6. Lucia says:

Neither of the two, Mr. Almodovar.

  7. Betteboo2u says:

This seems like a wildly old school style sexist comment from Almodovar, only reversed for young men, Like in the 50’s when women could be sexy (Marilyn Monroe) or actors (Katherine Hepburn), but not both.

  8. Thinking says:

I don’t think he’s good looking like a movie star or sexy (everyone has a preference), but he used to be in The Kissing Booth movies so he’s definitely moved up in his career. His career could have been so much worse, so my inclination is to think he’s made smart moves in his career. I would not have expected him to rise like this based on seeing him
    In those Netflix movies.

  9. jferber says:

He was blown away in Saltburn by the incredible Barry Keoghan. Now there is an actor vs. a pretty boy.
