Katy Perry & Justin Trudeau made their red-carpet couple debut in Tribeca

We haven’t talked about Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau’s relationship in a minute. Since we’ve been ignoring them, they’ve been doing more and more to get people’s attention. That’s the way it works! Justin and Katy’s first date was probably their dinner in Montreal last July. In the early months of their relationship, it felt like both sides were doing too much to promote their coupling. At some point, I just tapped out! Well, last night, Justin and Katy attended the Tribeca Film Festival. Her concert film, Katy Perry: The Lifetimes Tour – Live In Paris, premiered at the festival. This is their first red-carpet together.

They make an attractive couple, but I still find them rather odd together. He’s the former prime minister of Canada and the scion of a Canadian political dynasty. She’s a 40-something pop star with fading relevance. I guess you could argue that Trudeau also has faded relevance in Canada’s political world, but still. At the premiere, Katy was asked about her tour last year and meeting Trudeau along the way. She said, in part: “I would say now at the end of 91 shows, I feel like a more grounded person in so many aspects of my life. I am very in love. Actually, that show was after I met the love of my life, and so I felt very anchored by that…I’m a little bit like a rainbow kite — I fly super high. Sometimes I need to be anchored, so to have that anchor finally makes me feel really whole now.” Justin is the love of her life? Poor Orlando Bloom.

Fashion notes: Katy wore an archival Lanvin to this premiere. Like… they really pulled THIS out of their archives? For Katy? The funny little cones and her bralessness… it’s certainly a memorable look, I guess.

Laughing at this premiere on the night when all of NY is going gaga over the Knicks. Also, I absolutely hate his hair. YIKES!

  2. cws says:

archival is a funny word; did Lanvin confirm they loaned it to her or “pulled” it for her?
If they didn’t confirm, maybe it’s used, which I respect. It isn’t old enough to be vintage.

    • BeanieBean says:

I did some quick googling & found the dress is from Lanvin’s SS 1987 collection–so yes, vintage. Whether used or ‘pulled from the archives’, I couldn’t find. OK, more googling shows it’s from a vintage shop in LA, by appointment only, sold on May 21.

Woman! Burn that dress and find a decent hairdresser for this guy!

  4. Normades says:

I hate when people say “the love of my life”, it usually ends up meaning the love of my life so far. I think they were at Dua’s star studded wedding so yeah they are definitely part of the jet set and living it up.

  5. sharon says:

His dad, also a former Canadian prime minister, dated Barbra Streisand, among others. So, I was not surprised that Justin is attracted to a singer/performer. His mom once famously partied with the Rolling Stones! I think they’re cute together. He can be very charming & he’s in amazing shape.

    • Normades says:

I thought they were an odd match at first but they seem to be getting along nicely. I don’t doubt that they’re in love but I think they certainly both enjoy the attention as well

    • molly says:

I think they’re cut together too. They’re age-appropriate, seem to enjoy the same things, and both similar levels of dorky. I support it.

      • cosmo says:

13 year age gap. But both mature adults.

      • molly says:

@cosmo- I had to look it up, but 13 years difference surprised me. I would not have guessed he’s 54—that good hair does a lot of work to keep him seeming young!

And while I googled around, I realized Justin THEROUX is also 54, started dating his wife in her 20s, and just had a baby in his mid-50s. I knew Justin TRUDEAU wasn’t out there like that, but it wasn’t as much of a contrast as I thought.

I’ll call Katy and Justin “age-appropriatER”.

      CANADIAN here.
These two pompus wantwits D.E.S.E.R.V.E. each other. May they fade into their obscure decrepitude in each others arms.

  6. Marcia says:

I imagine every new guy she’s with is the love of her life. 🙂

  7. Alla says:

Interesting how a woman’s age is almost always mentioned as if it’s something negative about her, but the mens age is not mentioned.

  8. ChillinginDC says:

The love of her life? Man. Didn’t she say that about Russell and Orlando? LOL.

    • tyrant_destroyed says:

She said that about John Mayer too then they were promoting the song they made together.

  9. Nanea says:

    They look good together.

But I still don’t get how someone who was quite progressive as a politician ends up voluntarily with a MAGA-adjacent high school dropout, someone with a long, well-documented history of sexually predatory behavior.

It seems Trudeau finally found his true calling, groupie to KP.

    • Mtl.ex.pat says:

@nanea – was coming to say the same thing about not understanding this match…
Full disclosure – I liked him as prime minster and I think history will have a kinder view of him once noise settles down (hopefully). I also credit him with knowing he needed to bow out when he did to give Carney a chance.
That said – this whole relationship gives me the ick for the reasons you said. I expected more from him so I find this disappointing…

      • MMRB says:

You are, of course, entitled to support whomever you wish. However, I do not think it is accurate to frame the situation that way. Justin Trudeau has long been criticized for appearing self-assured, indulgent and driven by his own political priorities. He has also acknowledged pursuing significant change, (to be exact wanting to affect “the great change”) despite concerns about how those policies could affect the economy.
He did not simply choose to step aside voluntarily. Rather, he faced significant pressure from within his own caucus, which ultimately led to his decision to leave.

    Hard fuqing no

  11. tyrant_destroyed says:

Ugh I find this couple odd looking and he’s always behaving like a horny teenager. They are thirsty and exhausting but I guess they have to honor their contract so…

  12. jferber says:

I think this relationship is a giant come-down for Trudeau. Sure, his mother was the glamorous Margaret, who hobnobbed with all the famous people. But he was Prime Minister of Canada and I don’t respect him for this relationship. It makes him look very unserious.

    • Chrissy says:

Agree with you. She’s always come across as clownish and now I find out she’s Magat!? I think less of Justin for associating with her.

  13. Kim says:

I never like anything Katy wears and this dress is no exception. From faraway all I can see is wool dryer balls attached to the front of the dress; close up they look like mounds of frosting or whipped cream. Fug.

  14. Wizened Old Crone says:

If I had been married to a man who turned sex pest and later had a child with a naked paddleboarder I believe I too would find the handsome former prime minister the love of my life.

  15. David H says:

Justin should lay off the hair die and start up his Silver Fox era.
