Hello: ‘Is Prince William missing his chance to heal the monarchy?’

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s visit to the UK this month is still causing some very strange commentary from Kensington Palace, aka Prince William’s office. William’s perspective and briefings for weeks have boiled down to “reminding everyone that he hates Prince Harry and he will never forgive his brother unless Harry comes crawling home and apologizes!” That’s been William’s point of view for six solid years. William was incandescent with rage before the Oprah interview, before the Netflix contract, before Harry’s memoir. The rage was always about Harry’s marriage to Meghan, and William’s attempts to still control Harry’s life and force Harry to do whatever William ordered. That’s it. That’s what it’s always been about. And after all of these years, even bald-friendly outlets are wondering what the hell is wrong with William. From Hello Magazine’s “Is Prince William missing his chance to heal the monarchy? As the King makes peace with his son Prince Harry, what would happen if Prince William followed suit?”

How delighted the King must have been to finally be able to give his youngest grandchildren a cuddle and perhaps sit them on his knee to read them stories while voicing the characters, as he loves to do with his elder son Prince William’s children. One can only hope that the family reunion will be the first of many, paving the way for a thaw in the frosty relationship between Harry and Meghan and the royals.

Charles has always had a soft spot for his younger son, whom he used to affectionately call “my darling boy”. Like many parents who love their offspring unconditionally, he seems willing to overlook Harry’s betrayals in order to restore harmony to his family. But for Harry, building bridges with his father is the easy part. Now, he has a much bigger obstacle to overcome if he is going to repair the wider family rift – with his brother William.

At 77, the King is still undergoing cancer treatment following his diagnosis two years ago. There’s no doubt this has played a part in both his and Harry’s willingness to put past grievances behind them and their priorities into perspective.

Not so William, who at some point will succeed his father to become King William V. The parent-child relationship is very different to the one between brothers and, despite reports that he and Harry are in touch, sources tell HELLO! that this is not the case, and that the brothers remain very much estranged.

For anyone who has read Harry’s explosive 2023 memoir Spare, it’s not difficult to understand why. Harry’s recollections of a physical fight with his brother, which resulted in a broken necklace and dog bowl, left us agog. But what angered William the most was the way Harry took aim at the woman he had once loved like a sister – William’s wife Catherine. According to him, Catherine wasn’t warm enough towards Meghan and made Meghan cry in a row about bridesmaids’ outfits in the lead up to her wedding.

This came hot on the heels of Harry and Meghan’s unfounded racism claims about unnamed members of the royal family – later revealed to include Catherine.

No wonder William was furious at his younger brother, especially in light of Catherine’s own cancer diagnosis in 2024. But might there come a time when he is willing to follow his father’s lead? Those how know William say he has a fiery temper, but when it comes to his relationship with Harry, that hot-headedness has been replaced by an icy frost.

As a future King, William won’t just be contemplating the personal impact on his family but on the monarchy too. As William V, his job will be to uphold and protect the institution at all costs. So, is William’s stubborn and unforgiving streak a sign of a strong future King protecting everything he stands for, or is he missing an opportunity to heal the monarchy?

Could bringing his flawed, charismatic brother and his savvy wife back into the fold be just what the institution needs as Charles’s slimmed down monarchy starts to look thinner than ever?

[From Hello Magazine]

“But what angered William the most was the way Harry took aim at the woman he had once loved like a sister – William’s wife Catherine.” Perhaps what angered Harry the most is the way his brother and sister-in-law treated Meghan. Perhaps that’s why Harry wrote those passages in Spare, which – just as a reminder – weren’t even that bad. Kate came across as prissy and controlling, a passive-aggressive Karen crying over Easter gifts and any mention of her pregnancy hormones. Harry could have easily gone a lot harder on Kate and William. Meghan could have gone harder on both of them as well but she didn’t. Instead of acknowledging that, William’s anger and rage has just festered for years unchecked and unexamined. And as I said, what Harry wrote in Spare was not the beginning of any of this. Still, it’s interesting that this month has reminded everyone of William’s immaturity, cowardice and rage. Breaking news: he’s been like this for years.

I doubt charles reads children’s books to any of the grandkids. Charles betrayed harry by eviction of harry and meghan and the children from their uk. I doubt harry loves kate. Isn’t a f I e r y temper in scooter a major flaw. Kate did not deny the crying story which is a huge flaw

    • Smices says:

I believe he read Harry Potter books ti Camilla’s grandchildren years ago. Those are the only grandchildren he actually cares about.

      • Yvette says:

@Smices … I don’t believe that Charles has ever been close to William’s kids. When the Cambridge kids were young, kate practically lived at her parents house with them or at Anmer with the Middletons and the turnip-toffs. In fact, I recall an article or two from Clarence House complaining about how Charles never got to spend anytime with William’s kids because they were always with the Middletons.

Likewise, there have been a few articles about how much Charles adores Camilla’s grandchildren and loves reading Harry Potter to them while voicing all the characters. So I find it interesting that Hello is now claiming that it’s William’s kids to whom he reads.

This is definitely an ‘attempt to rewrite history’ article. Harry didn’t accuse Kate of anything as much as he simply shared text receipts to clarify what really happened behind the ‘Meghan made Kate cry’ incident. In her own texted words Kate showed herself to be a mean girl. Harry deserves no credit for that reveal.

    • maisie says:

somehow all that flowery prose about Charles “giving his grandchildren a cuddle” falls flat when you know the reality of Charles and Camilla. they are NOT that sort of grandparents and my guess is that the visit was stilted and formal. bet the kids got a lot of cuddles at Althorp, and it’s freaking out the BRF, which is why these pieces are so over the top.

      • Jay says:

I physically grimaced at that description of Charles “finally being able to give his youngest grandchildren a cuddle and perhaps sit them on his knee to read them stories”. It just rings so forced and false with both the royal brand as a whole and Charles’ brand in particular.

There’s just no evidence of him ever being an openly affectionate, tactile parent or grandparent, and lots of evidence of him seeming cold, distant, and uncomfortable around children. I could see him taking his grandchildren for a hike to forage, building something together or birdwatching. Basically, sharing his own interests with them. I can’t picture him snuggling, lol.

I think it’s worth considering the source for all of this, which is Hello! ( more of a celeb-focused outlet rather than part of the rota).

      • GTWiecz says:

I know Charles Spencer’s kids are older, but here’s hoping that Lady Jane and Lady Sarah brought any young grandchildren to play with Archie and Lili (their 3rd cousins).

  2. Tessa says:

Harry did not love l kate like a sister. And kate let a lie stay in the media and witnessed kate taking threatening step towards meghan . Keen is to blame yet she plays victim

    • ANON says:

Kkkate (and/or her mother) orchestrated that lie that they then let stay in the media. Camilla Tominey reported the lie and she is the direct mouthpiece for Waity & her ma.

  3. Dee(2) says:

They act like what was said in Spare was so detrimental that Kate could never show her face in public. It may have surprised some of the people who weren’t royal watchers, but I feel like it just confirmed what had been whispered about or observed by the royal watchers for years. In any case that’s not a reason to be as angry as William is, and to brief the press that you effing hate him and her, to refer to Meghan as “that woman”, and for Kate to describe being around Meghan as the hardest thing she’s ever done, like they accused Kate of trafficking.

This has always been about jealousy and control. William’s jealousy that Harry had something he thought he deserved, and finally something he couldn’t take. And Kate’s jealousy that being pretty and young weren’t going to be sufficient anymore. So he set out to ruin it, and instead he just chased his brother away. And what we’ve seen and still are seeing is someone who won’t ( not can’t) come to terms with their lack of control over someone’s actions and life choices.

And just like the people who weren’t royal watchers but were interested in reading Spare, perhaps being surprised by Kate’s ice queen behavior, the same people are starting to ask the right questions. WHY are you so angry years later? Your brother doesn’t even talk about you? HOW can you still be mad your brother didn’t take your advice to slow down his relationship, 10 years later? Why are you so angry that your brother and your sister-in-law support themselves, and have moved on with their lives?

    • Jais says:

It’s funny bc I think all the royal reporters know how Kate treated Meghan. So yeah, whispers, but they all knew that Kate was jealous and territorial and acted like a mean girl. They’ll never say that but Robert Lacey I think said that William and Kate had sharp elbows from the beginning with Meghan. A very understated observation but closer to the truth than usual.

      • Blujfly says:

Sometimes when they’re making William and Kate out to be clairvoyants with perfect instincts and that’s why they were cold to Meghan, they accidentally/on purpose reveal that that means they treated her badly, even after she married.

    • sunniside up says:

For William to call Meghan ‘that woman’ only proves that William is extremely rude.

      • Chrissy says:

Isn’t that what the Queen Mother called the Duchess of Windsor? Wasn’t the Queen Mother rejected by the Duke of Windsor and later hated the Duchess of Windsor because of it? Harry clearly rejected Kate’s interference in his love life pre-Meghan and it also got worse when he married Meghan. Kate’s behaviour copied the QM’s but I think with her it’s pathological…. She hated Meg because Kate had no influence on Harry love life and she had to settled for the Lazy, Violent, Cheating brother William to get close to the crown.

  4. bisynaptic says:

    “Unfounded” racism claims?
    How did you decide that?

  5. Jan says:

Harry is busy supporting volunteers in Santa Barbara.

  6. Brassy Rebel says:

This monarchy doesn’t need a “healing”. It needs an exorcism. 👿 And then it needs abolition.

    • WaterDragon says:

The way I see it, the real problem the “Royal Family” and the racist British media and society have with Meghan is that she outshone the “Pyramid Toppers” in every way from the moment she married in. She is better at connecting with people, she is more charismatic, she works hard and actually accomplishes tangible things. So basically they are flat out jealous of her intelligence and accomplishments, her strength of character. Harry was the only one of them who recognized her worth and he was smart enough to snap her up right away and build a life with her away from the lazy, dull, jealous Left Behinds.

  7. Amy Bee says:

Hello is behaving like Harry’s book was the start of the rift and that William and Kate had no responsibility for his decision to leave the UK. William and Kate are not the victims in this situation as they were the instigators. And it’s obvious that a white person wrote this piece when it talks about unfounded claims of racism in the Royal Family. I have no doubt many members said and did or encouraged staff to do racist things to Meghan.

  8. Talie says:

I gotta say, looking back, all that Harry revealed in Spare was quite tame overall. I feel like the Oprah interview was way more dramatic and William did speak to him after that. The real story is in those cut 400 pages. Even the Netflix doc was very much the same as Spare. And it’s not like Will and Kate didn’t get their lick back – the bullying story had some major legs as did Knauf going to the court against Meghan.

  9. Nic919 says:

Harry never loved Kate like a sister. When the engagement was announced he said he looked forward to getting to know her.
And in spare it was obvious Harry was rarely around them.
But since Kate was the origin of a smear campaign against his wife that lead not only to suicidal ideation but also a miscarriage, Harry had no issue pointing out how over the years Kate is not a nice person.
He started with showing she was cool with the Halloween costume and found it funny.
He also showed that Kate was stand offish to Meghan from the outset and had weird issues with her.
I think everyone needs to look at the photos of the commonwealth service where kate did her little game of ignoring Meghan in full public view. As they leave the church, there is a photo of Harry looking angry. And he’s looking at Kate. Not William. But Kate.

Unlike William, Harry protects and defends his wife and Kate’s games will never be forgotten.

Harry could have torched Kate way more. All the times she barged into his room at Clarence House among other things. But what he describe was just enough to confirm that Kate is a nasty pick me who fits in with the rest of the Windsors.

    • Beckett says:

I believe that William’s wife started to resent Meghan from the moment she found out who she was.
Her husband was keen on the actress playing Rachel and finding out that Harry had attracted such a woman, one who was not only good-looking, but also educated, intelligent, confident and used to public-facing interactions must have sent her in a panic.
Suddenly she was no longer the lucky commoner who had “married in” and she was clearly NOT up to the job in comparison with Harry’s girlfriend.
Everything that happened comes directly from her feeling of inferiority. How dare Meghan treat her as an equal, as a friend, when SHE was the future Queen? Know your place!!

      • Nic919 says:

The very first blind where Kate refused to give Meghan a ride to go shopping told us how this was going to roll.
Kate loves shopping and a normal person would invite her brother in law’s new girlfriend to her favourite activity.
Instead Kate made it obvious to exclude Meghan and then brief that she didn’t think Harry was serious enough about Meghan for Kate to provide a public stamp of approval.

      • Where'sMyTiara says:

@Beckett I believe William felt inferiority complex around Meghan as well. Here he is, heir to the head of state of many nations, with imposter syndrome making his life hell because he knows he doesn’t have what it takes to do the job, and then Meghan shows up in Harry’s life, clearly possessing all of those necessary soft power skills he lacks.

Feeling less than both Harry whom he leaned on and Meghan who surprised him, added to misogynoir and the general contempt born of the artificial hierarchy, was the proverbial match to the gunpowder keg that is William.

I would argue that this feeling extends to Fred and Gladys as well, who hate being outshone by anyone and perceive anyone with natural people skills as an existential threat to them.

    • Bqm says:

I wonder how much of the “William hates Harry” stories are really based around Kate. Because William was able to behave better publicly than she was. At the Commonwealth event, the Queen’s funeral and the walkabout, etc. Yes those were before spare but they were after Oprah. For all the “peacemaker” stories she seems as angry, if not more so, than William. And despite those same stories there are an equal number of “Kate will never forgive” ones as well.

      • Nic919 says:

Harry and Meghan last attended the commonwealth service in 2020. So that was before Oprah. And at the time it was only when the Sussexes were going to take break that at the time was considered temporary.
So Kate played her little miss bitch game before anything was said in public about her lies relating to the bridesmaids dresses.
Just like at the funeral walkabout, William was not the one who iced out Meghan.
        It was Kate.
For all things relating to Meghan, it is Kate who has behaved the worst.

  10. Siri says:

“Like many parents who love their offspring unconditionally, he seems willing to overlook Harry’s betrayals in order to restore harmony to his family.”

Charles is the one who betrayed the family first and he needs to stop feigning ignorance. The apology needs to start with him. He and Camilla are ground zero for the problems in that family. If he wanted to marry that trashy cow then his little cowardly ass should have stood up to his parents. What were they going to do, not allow him to be King? His cowardice ruined people’s lives.

    • Tessa says:

Charles did not ask permission of his parents to marry camilla in the early seventies. He was the one who decided not to court her and later told his biographer he was not ready for marriage then

  11. Graphinya Heather says:

I know I sometimes have a hard time with Meghan viciously lying and calling Kate a good person on national television.

    • suoutdoors says:

Same. Her white lie made me think that Meghan is a better person than me. Way better!

  12. Kingston says:

This crumbling monarchy’s fatal flaw is the way its sycophants at every level (grey men/advidors/known and unknown spox for monarch & heir/RotaRats & other media gate-keepers/& assorted other bullies & trolls) approach every commentary, opinion piece, observation, criticism and praise only from the POV of the Windsor-RF…….never the Montecito-RF.

Always, it is H&M who are presented as the cause of this latest iteration of the unraveling of the BRF which began in 2016 when M entered that vipers nest and they immediately began their campaign of destruction against her (but which the lying sycophantic carcasses try to convince us that the unravelling began with the Oprah interview in 2021.)

Entwined in that fatal flaw is the belief of the sycophants that they can fool all the people all the time…….in this age of social media and instant recall!

Prince Phillip did famously say, over 50yrs ago, that the fall of the BRF will be directly caused by the actions of its sycophants.

As for me and my kind, from all across the globe, we’re just here sitting back, pointing and laughing at the desperation, while we look on, support and enjoy the beauty, joy and success of the One-of-One-and-Only-One – The Sussexes.

    • GTWiecz says:

Good thing we have receipts. Receipts of the numerous, hundreds and hundreds of articles coming from UK tabloids before the Oprah interview.

    • Where'sMyTiara says:

@Kingston, I saw a British YouTuber interview one of his fellow countrymen this week about post-World Cup, had the man’s views on America changed since going to the States for the Cup.

He said they had, and one of the things he pointed out was how people seem more afraid to speak out in the UK and they see the contrast in how Americans don’t fear to speak their minds. He then went on to give an example, mentioning “how Henry was treated” and “the Henry situation” and how disgusting that was; the interviewer readily agreed.
      The man meant Prince Harry.
Charles, the govt, courtiers, RAVEC, and the press are seen for who they are on the streets of Brittania, and they appear to be deeply despised by members of the public. They’re not all sheep hoovering down every lie the tabs spew forth. It surprised me to hear it.

  13. Shiela Kerr says:

When Harry married Meghan, he stopped being what the Firm, William and Charles considered, their property. Someone they could send wherever they chose and who could be used as their scapegoat. For those cowards, this is unforgivable. Now the spotlight is on them and at every metric, they have fallen short. None of them have his God given authenticity, empathy, charisma or relatability. They are running scared because they no longer have a cover.

    • Mairzy Doats says:

I think they still consider him property somehow. This is a country where people are considered subjects, not citizens, so it’s a mentality. Then the family business empire, which is primarily real estate and investments, is controlled solely by the monarch and heir, and all the royal family bit with appearances and funny hat ceremonies is simply the public relations arm for the main money making business. Still there is an implied contract that you do xyz and you will receive abc, and for extra measure we’ll pretend that we’re a real family and give a hoot about one another. I think when Harry ceased to be their property was when there was no allowance, no housing, no security, no health insurance for the wife, no respect or civility for him or for the wife and children, and thus no reason for him to continue to “obey” them. The contract was broken. Even more infuriating to the RF is that Harry and Meghan have been successful financially, socially, emotionally.

      • IdlesAtCranky says:

The Firm is as hard to escape as the old-style Cosa Nostra. And it has much the same insistence on “omertà” — the code of silence, and of willfully ignoring and generally avoiding interference with the illegal activities of others.

        It’s a really well-constructed trap.

If you’re a good person, it boxes you in with notions of duty, honor, family obligation, noblesse oblige, and dedication to public service.

If you’re a bad person, it sucks you in with free money, power, and privilege, and tells you public service is just the pretty story we tell the peasantry.

Either way, the machine controls you, and puts whatever talents you may have to work in service of the cabal.

And as with so many patriarchal constructs, it is ruled from and rots from the head, but the secondary tiers of those in power, like the courtiers and the rota, do the most to enforce the really harmful, destructive behaviors of the whole.

Gah. It’s amazing the Sussexes got free. May they remain safe and happy.

      • samihali says:

Mairzydoats, They denied M health insurance / healthcare? I did not know that!

      • Mairzy Doats says:

        @IdlesAtCranky — Well put!

@samihali — It’s in the Oprah interview that when Meghan was seeking mental health care of a serious, immediate nature, the institution told her she wasn’t eligible because she wasn’t an employee, and that anyway it wouldn’t look good for the royal family. (paraphrasing)

  14. Me at home says:

Looks like Sunny Bullets (Willy’s new PR honcho) has read the comments about how “William is an incandescent psycho” is such a bad look. So now we have “that hot-headedness has been replaced by an icy frost.” Sure, Jan.

  15. Lady Digby says:

Still, it’s interesting that this month has reminded everyone of William’s immaturity, cowardice and rage.
Great conclusion from Kaiser. Kaiser and others have been covering Will for years and his flaws, inadequacy and insecurity have always been there. Plenty hoped that maturity, self awareness of his unhappiness and needs to change plus a loving marriage to an intelligent and kind wife who encouraged him to seek therapy, children that he was determined to be the absolute best for would motivate him. Recently it has become increasingly clear that something is majorly wrong with the heir: lazy, stubborn, stupid and getting angrier all the time. He should be stepping up and reassuring everybody that he’s got the right stuff as heir. Not only has that not happen but he looks and acts like he is going to seed at only 44 and this guy has a valet!! No wonder even friendly outlets are enquiring what is the matter with him?

  16. Seaside says:

Question – are we sure that Harry wants to reconcile with William?

    • jenjamtx says:

      ^^Bingo!

    • Kingston says:

      @Seaside
In theory he does. But there are pre-requisites.

In his interviews during Spare promotion, H clearly spelt out the preconditions that Bully has to satisfy before “reconciliation” enters the chat.:

      1: “Apology to my wife”
2: Acceptance of accountability for the role he and his KP minions played in the campaign of abuse against M.
3: Reconciliation would be with family only, not with the institution. And any visits with family would be kept strictly private…….no public displays and no performative nonsense for media & public consumption.

But H also said (knowing exactly who Bully is) that he doesn’t expect to get an apology and so he & his wife wouldnt be waiting around for one. “Me and my wife, we’re moving on.”

  17. Jferber says:

You betcha. On the other hand, he’ll hasten the end of the monarchy, so that’s good.

  18. JudyJ says:

“. . .protect the institution at all costs.”

Based on things that happened in the past few years, I assume that includes lying and spreading those lies to the media, cheating on your wife, treating staff badly, requiring members of your family to bow and grovel to get paid a fair wage for their work for the monarchy, ignoring the run-down rental properties you own, and overall, acting like idiots in their attempts to control other people.

    • Kasztanka says:

      Our eyes will bleed.

“Are you sure that was supposed to be about William…?
      – ‘A marriage full of love?’
      – ‘An intelligent, kind wife’?
      You’ve got to be kidding…??? 🤣
Where would he even get her from—borrow her from Harry? He wishes… :))
Kate is an empty vessel, just like William, and neither of them is willing to ‘sacrifice everything for the children.’
They can’t even create a friendly environment or warm relationships for them, yet you’re talking about sacrificing everything.

Besides, don’t believe for a second that royalists and journalists are only just now seeing the truth. They always knew William was an empty-headed, arrogant fool, but their job was to speak and write only good things about him. However, I do believe they quietly hoped for some improvement—a glimmer of responsibility—only to see a colossal, utter moron embarrassing himself at every turn; a man whose uselessness is only growing and who clearly amounts to nothing.
On top of that, so many people have dirt on him—the kind of stuff that would make our eyes bleed—that for this reason alone, he should never become king. He’s an easy target for blackmail, which poses a threat to national security given a monarch’s access to classified documents and state secrets.

  19. QuiteContrary says:

Charles would cuddle my children over my dead body. He has too many pedophile friends in my estimation and while he’s never been accused of similar conduct, he’s way too comfortable with it.
