The Sussexes have moved into a new leased home on their friend’s Cotswolds estate

When the Sussex family moved to the UK in August, there was a lot of reporting about how they were house-hunting like crazy in the Cotswolds. That reporting seemed off the mark – the Sussexes ended up moving into a friend’s estate in the Cotswolds, and they seemed more focused on getting their kids settled and visiting with friends. Still, it was said that Prince Harry was interested in eventually purchasing a Cotswolds country home as a UK base, and the Sussexes reportedly had a budget of around £10 million. But now it looks like they’re just going to lease, and they’re not even moving off their friend’s estate.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly moved into their new home in the Cotswolds, ending the couple’s search for a permanent base in the UK.

The Sussexes had been staying in the main house on a businessman friend’s estate while they conducted their search, a source told the Daily Mail.

But the newspaper reports they have now found their new long-term home in a different property on the estate, although the exact location has not been disclosed.

“They were living in the main house,” a friend of the businessman said. “They have now moved to a property on the estate.”

The pair moved back to the UK in August after spending six years in California raising their two children Archie, seven , and Lillibet, five. The children are now attending school in the UK, but had to move from their first choice over security concerns.

Reports suggest the couple will keep hold of their £19.5m California home, which boasts a gym, swimming pool, cinema, wine cellar, and 13 bathrooms.

The duchess is also expected to temporarily relocate to Australia next year for the filming of Junior Masterchef, which she is set to co-host. A source told News.com.au that her husband, the Duke of Sussex, alongside their children Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, may travel to visit her, although nothing has been confirmed.

Please, please let this be true. The last thing Harry and Meghan need is to buy a home in the UK. The minute they put down those kinds of roots, all hell will break loose. The papers will publish the address, helicopters will be flown overhead and paparazzi will be waiting outside the kids’ school. I also believe that the moment the Sussexes make any big move to stay in the UK for longer than a season, that’s when RAVEC will deny their police protection. Whatever this Sussex Restoration Project was supposed to be, let’s wrap this sh-t up by Christmas and walk away clean, without entangling millions of dollars in British real estate.

It doesn’t seem like Harry and Meghan are interested in buying a house in the UK. More confirmation that the move to the appears to be temporary.

    • Teresa Holmes says:

Amy bee. Meg & h told you they are staying for autumn only in their statement. Harry confirmed in GQ interview that they will be there for a few months. I don’t know why y’all don’t want to listen to h&m

      • Amy Bee says:

I haven’t heard that. There hasn’t been a specific time-frame announced for their stay. They’ve only said an extended period of time.

      • bisynaptic says:

I don’t remember his saying that. I remember he was noncommittal.

  2. Denise says:

I’m glad they weren’t rushing into buying a property. They’re waiting to see how things will pan out. This patience is very smart.

  3. julie says:

Nobody really know their plans or the duration of their stay. Have we seen helicopter yet over their house? I believe that to go international, As Ever need warehouses out of the US. In the UK today, in Australia next year. I trust the Sussex know what they are doing.

    • Jais says:

I’ve thought about that as well.

    • Teresa Holmes says:

We do know how long they are staying. H& m told us in their statement. They said during the autumn season.

      • Jais says:

For sure. I’m one that doesn’t care how long they stay. It’s up to them. It’s more I’ve been thinking about how it would be cool to set up manufacturing in the uk, esp for combustibles. I have no idea though and that’s just me pondering but it would seem like a smart idea.

  4. ChillinginDC says:

I wonder though if they are waiting for something that they really want to buy though? Or can you lease in Britain with an option to buy?

  5. SuOutdoors says:

When H &M allegedly started house hunting, I dud the same, what legions of british reporters did: browsing over offers, comparing possibilities. Just for fun. There had been several estates/mansions/cottage with enough land to be protected, away from busy roads near decent infrastructure. I think if they had wanted to buy, they could have. Instead they decided to lease – and I’m deeply grateful they did. I really, really hope, this is a temporary thing. Yes, the Cotswolds are beautiful. The whipped up british public is not.

Twenty years ago the Indy wouldn’t cover gossip. It is not the paper that it used to be. It is now lifting it from the tabs without checking the facts.

Scooter’s acquaintance Evgeny Baron Lebedev of Siberia, son of KGB spy AlexanderLebedev, is the biggest shareholder and the editor for the past few years has been Geordie Greig, a Tory.

    • Magdalena says:

The editor used to work for the Daily Mail. He immediately began to tabloidise the paper. And they have been using H+M as clickbait just like all the other tabloids and broadsheets (also tabloids in my book).

  7. Lili says:

the Kids are smart! Uk housing market is on a downward trend so they would be losing money if the bought now so its good they wait for the right price and all that

    • MelodyM says:

I still think this is about the Games. I suspect they will be there until things wrap up next July. I may be wrong but that’s my story and I’m sticking to it..for now. 🙂

  8. GMHQ says:

It was obvious the family was moving there so the kids could get to know grandpa for as long as he is here. When Chuck goes, so will they. They certainly have no intention of hanging around for Scooter and Kant to insert themselves in their lives.

    • Teresa Holmes says:

Y’all don’t listen to nothing harry & meg say. Harry told y’all in the GQ interview that they were here for a few months during autumn. Harry & meg release their statement in late August saying the were staying for the autumn season but y’all listening to tom Sykes lies. Just wow

      • Coplaya says:

The autumn ‘season’ ends next month. Do you really think they’ll pack up and leave the UK after having enrolled the kids in school?

  9. robinathefirst says:

They’re there for the Invictus year. Occam’s Razor. Accept it and react accordingly.

    • AG says:

      Yup, I agree.

    • Gabby says:

Yes, a “year abroad” for the Sussex Fam. Then back to paradise.

Buying a UK property, even for occasional use, would make them sitting ducks for media intrusion. Better to switch up where they stay on future UK visits, and keep in the safe confines of Althrop and other friends’ residences.

    • ecsmom says:

That makes the most sense to me. It’s tough having kids go to different schools in the same year. I went to school in 5 different states and moving midyear is hard.

  10. Mads says:

I’m still minded to think this is a year long move that coincides with the run up to Invictus and the rumoured Diana documentary.

Given the location of the first school in relation to where they would be initially living on a friend’s estate, I suspect the initial plan was to rent something in the Cotswolds but that was abandoned after having to move the children within a week because of the traffic volume and the potential security issues. The children are now settled in an independent school close to where they are living, it makes sense to move to another property on the estate that they can lease for next 10 months.

  11. Emma says:

How do we know they are not still looking to purchase a house in the UK? How do we know they are leaving the UK for good next year? They may be holding off until they find somewhere they really love. It wouldn’t surprise me if they wanted to establish a permanent base in the uk. Why not? Harry and Meghan are two grown adults the parasocial relationship some people have with them to the extent they think it their business tell them where they can and can’t live is frankly odd…

  12. Jferber says:

Please let this awful sojourn be over very soon, like tomorrow. The stress on Meghan in particular must be hell. She’s a duchess and true royalty, so she doesn’t show it, but I feel for her in particular. The As Ever cup and saucer I bought is now sold out, but the tea pot is still available. Can’t wait to get them.

  13. QuiteContrary says:

Rooting for a Christmas homecoming and a new year in gorgeous Montecito, leaving behind a trail of sputtering British tabloid reporters, annoyed because they again only have the dull Waleses to cover.

  14. MikeB says:

can the UK press ever get their stories correct? It was reported some time ago that Harry and Meghan were living in a cottage on the estate, now the Independent is reporting they were living in the main house, which is correct?

  15. Mayp says:

I’m convinced now that they just came for a year to see through the Invictus Games. If you will note, once they arrived, all of the A Working Royal Should Take Over The Invictus Games commentary stopped.

  16. Jferber says:

The Invictus Games are in July, 2027. That’s a long time away! Including this month, it’s 8 months away. Between the midterms, the Sussexes’ danger and my own personal problems, I’m a wreck.
