Freida Pinto on scandalously dumping her fiancé: “I feel what I did was right”

freida1

My lord, Freida Pinto is gorgeous. This is such a simple photo too – just a basic head shot of a beautiful woman, and she’s captivating. Anyway… Freida is the cover girl for the NYT Style Magazine’s Fall issue. Other than the cover shot, the photos online are kind of meh, so I hope the print magazine had a full editorial. Frieda also gave a little interview – and she talks in greater detail about that “scandal” from last year, where the tabloids claimed that she was secretly married, and that she had abandoned her husband for Hollywood. Long story short, most sources now agree that Freida was NOT secretly married to the dude, but she was engaged to him, and she did dump him rather spectacularly for Hollywood and a romance with Dev Patel. Freida tells the magazine: “I feel what I did was right. There were no two ways about it… Everyone is going to write you off for one thing or another, but you know what? It’s my life, and if I didn’t go through it, I wouldn’t be the person I am today, sitting here talking about what happened back then and being a little more knowledgeable about what happens in relationships.” Hmm…

Freida Pinto is not one to shy away from a grand gesture. “As my friends and family are quick to remind me, I have always been a big drama queen,” Pinto, 26, recalls over breakfast in a Midtown hotel suite. “As a child, I would stand in front of the mirror and pretend I was this or that person from television. All I needed to do was realize it and recognize what I wanted to do.”

For Pinto, the epiphany came at 11, when India’s Sushmita Sen won the 1994 Miss Universe competition. “The country was really proud of her, and I was like, One day, I want to do the same,” Pinto says in her clipped, slightly accented English, which betrays her middle-class upbringing in the suburbs of Mumbai. “It wasn’t just the glamour of it all because I think at 11, I could hardly understand what glamour was. I really wanted to be like her — appreciated and a source of inspiration. I think that’s what made me go into acting.”

Fortunately, Pinto’s genetic gifts meant that having a career inspired by a beauty queen was a possibility. (Before her crossover success as Latika, the female lead in the 2008 hit “Slumdog Millionaire,” Pinto was a model and the host of a television travel show.) And although she is an eloquent interview subject, her responses occasionally sound like the platitudes you might hear from a contestant being grilled in a beauty pageant.

But Pinto is ever the good sport. After it is pointed out to her that she has a habit of answering in evening-wear-competition oratory, she checks herself a couple of times and allows, “There I go again, sounding like a Miss Universe contestant.” It’s a candor that is also evident when she is asked about her appearance in Woody Allen’s latest London-based ensemble film, “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger,” to be released next month. In a case of art imitating life, Pinto’s character, Dia, a gorgeously exotic musicologist — is there any other kind? — leaves her fiancé for another man. (In January 2009, Pinto called off her engagement to Rohan Antao and started dating her “Slumdog Millionaire” co-star Dev Patel.)

“I feel what I did was right,” she says of her real-life breakup. “There were no two ways about it. But when I walked into Woody’s office and read the scene in the nursery, where Dia confesses for the first time that she has doubts about what she is getting into, I was like, Has someone been reading the gossip magazines to Woody?”

The gossip magazines certainly had a field day with Pinto’s personal life, after Antao gave an interview to a British tabloid about their relationship and Indian newspapers claimed the two had in fact been secretly married.

“Everyone is going to write you off for one thing or another, but you know what?” Pinto continues. “It’s my life, and if I didn’t go through it, I wouldn’t be the person I am today, sitting here talking about what happened back then and being a little more knowledgeable about what happens in relationships.”

Not having appeared in any Hindi-language films, Pinto admits that she has a way to go before she convinces the doubters back home in India, who know her only as a professional beauty and for her role in “Slumdog Millionaire,” that she has the acting chops to match her cheekbones. And although she holds her own in “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger,” alongside a cast that includes Josh Brolin, Naomi Watts and Anthony Hopkins, Pinto’s character is little more than imported wallpaper. Ask Woody. “She’s the perfect obscure object of desire,” Allen said via e-mail. “She’s exactly what I wish I saw when I look out the back window of my house in Manhattan.”

Pinto’s desire not to be reduced to the subject of a gaze or to paparazzi bait may be realized with the December release of Julian Schnabel’s film “Miral,” based on Rula Jebreal’s novel, which follows an orphan (played by Pinto) as she falls in love with a Palestinian activist during the first intifada. Not that Pinto is worried about the difference of opinion the movie is likely to generate. “I knew it was going to be one of those stories that will create a lot of controversy,” she says. “But there are stories that need to be told, and if you’re always going to live in fear of what’s going to happen, you’re really not being truthful to yourself. For me, it’s not only an excellent opportunity to prove myself as a serious actor, but also to make a difference in the world.” She smiles, knowing that Miss Universe could not have put it better.

I really do hope that Freida finds major success in Hollywood – I think she’s a talented actress, and I also think she’s one of the most beautiful of all the “starlets” getting work currently. I hope Hollywood finds a place for her and doesn’t just typecast her in “Indian chick” roles (not that there are that many). All that being said, I do think she was kind of mean to dump her fiancé when something better came along – and, according to the fiancé, she barely even spoke to him about it, just dumped him and immediately moved on.

  1. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Yea Freida is stunning. I don’t know much about her but its good she got out of the relationship before she married him and ruined his life or hers. He will heal from his pain of broken up with.

  2. Aqua says:

It happens all the time. It’s better to realize that person isn’t right for you before you get married rather than after you’re married.

  3. Dhavy says:

She is stunning! Certainly different than the typical Hollywood startlet

  4. K-MAC says:

Better to do it now before one is married. She is too young to get married….glad she did it and moved on—smart woman who is beautiful and will go far in this business

  5. Rosanna says:

She is stunning! And, there is nothing bad in dumping your fiance when you realize he is not what you want from life anymore. She wasn’t married yet so wtf are people judging her over?

  6. jzhz says:

I can’t believe anyone could say someone like Jennifer Anniston is remotely pretty when people who look like Frieda Pinto are around…I mean, she just blows her (and most of the boring Hollywood types) out of the water.

  7. Heaven-bound says:

*sigh* I thought she had dumped Dev Patel for a minute … I’m glad that is not the case they are such a cute couple.

  8. Schnozzle says:

I absolutely love Freida and I’m so glad there’s an Indian woman getting Hollywood movie roles (there’s plenty of us on tv right now at least). And it’s better she dumped him then, rather than a year into their marriage being all miserable. She was with that guy when she was just a middling model in India doing print ads for maxi pads and her career was going nowhere.

  9. Maritza says:

Is she still dating Dev Patel? She is very beautiful I wonder if she only dates guys from India?

  10. guesty says:

the top shot is the best one.

  11. @KAISER says:

Kaiser pinto is gonna have such a wonderful career. In just 2 yrs she has already worked with oscar winning directors like Woody allen and Julian schnabel.she is also playing lead role in two big budget films like Immortals($80 mill) and Rise of apes($90 mill).Interestingly except for that woody’s film she is not playing indian role in any other project. In Immortals(greek women),Rise of apes(mexican) and in Miral(palestinian).

  12. skibunny says:

    OMG she’s so beautiful!

  13. @KAISER says:

Do u really think dev patel is such a better choice?.He has no films now while pinto has 4 films releasing between 2010-2011.I have read somewhere that they have started dating even before slumdog release. But Im still wondering why she is dating this jobless guy. With a gorgeous face like that she could easily get a milionaire.

  14. Po says:

Hey there weren’t any kids involved and she didn’t go around lying through her teeth about having a perfect marriage or relationship while sleeping with someone else. Sounds like just a breakup to me and hopefully next time around she’ll learn how to do it better.

  15. Emma says:

I think next she will become even more popular worldwide as Immortals(3D) and Rise of apes(3D) would be releasing back to back.Does anyone else think she look more like latina than indian?

  16. Toe says:

The ex gave interviews about being dumped? Thats a scorned man (and he’s ugly too)

  17. Snarf says:

Chances are it was an arranged engagement. Don’t blame her one bit.

  18. Diane says:

BFD…Who gives a crap? (Although I must admit I was suckered into reading this by the word ‘scandalously.’)

  19. Liana says:

She’s beautiful. And yeah, she was right to end it before they got married. Maybe she didn’t do it the way her ex-fiance would have liked, but it happened.

  20. Cheyenne says:

Better now than later. It’s not easy to unload a guy once you’re married to him.

  21. California Surfer says:

Whoa this Dev dude must be way majorly excellent in the sack!

  22. la chica says:

i hope Dev knows that his days are counted. i wonder whom she will replace him with?

  23. Ruby Red Lips says:

Will try again…my comment has mysteriously disappeared…confusion…???

Anyhows, my point was in reply to #13…

its that little thing called love ;o) Millionaire or no millionaire love conquers all

  24. moops says:

Glad I’m not famous, or I’m sure my ex-boyfriends would have tons of mean things to say about me, too. Everyone dishes when they get dumped- but most don’t have magazines paying them to do so.

  25. Twez says:

Always better to end the relationship before you get married. If she didn’t do it sensitively and properly, well, it’s none of my business. No matter how you do it, someone is going to be hurt.

  26. wunderkindt says:

She should be with the one she wants to be with-you cant force love!

  27. Camille says:

Very pretty woman. It will be interesting to see how her career goes.

  28. RobN says:

Gotta wonder how long till she dumps Dev. He’s got nothing going on and looks 12. Too bad more engaged couples don’t break up instead of heading into bad marriages knowing they have doubts. Seems like a very mature decision.

  29. hey, at least she’s honest. So many people in Hollywood try to pretend like they’re not scandalous even when they do some really messed up things (I’m looking at YOU Alicia Keys!)

  30. toto says:

frida is beautful? thats a joke

  31. toto says:

frida at most would be cute girl , but nominate her as one of the most beautful actresses out there , thats what they call media brain wash

  32. Diva says:

It’s mean to get yourself out of a lifelong commitment to something you don’t want before you’ve committed to it???? She did him and herself a huge favor.

You know, alot of people in the world look beyond superficial things like looks when falling in love. Dev is no hottie to ME, but clearly he’s what she likes, I think it’s great!

  33. Marjalane says:

The first pic is pretty, but overall I’m not that impressed with her. Her hairline, (of all things) drives me nuts. She needs to get it lasered back a bit.

  34. flutters says:

Gorgeous woman. I’m interested in seeing if she’s got the acting chops too because her Slumdog role wasn’t that much of a challenge. She was perfectly cast though. I’m rooting for Dev Patel’s career too because I thought he did prove his chops in Slumdog Millionaire.

  35. Zelda says:

So she should just marry him after she has decided she doesn’t want to?
    What the…WHY?

BTW–Kaiser, for some reason, in my head, you have always been Freida Pinto!

  36. sally says:

Her brow area is very heavy…it’s like encroaching on her eyelids.

  37. georgiagrl says:

    WTF!!!
Maybe he’s jobless because Hollywood has no roles for men of color you fools! Dev is is trying to act, but has to pass on the nerdy brainiac or terrorist roles he’s offered. So now he’s a loser for passing on garbage roles? Best of luck to this adorable couple and to those of you who made such ignorant comments.get a clue!

  38. Adrien says:

Freida’s fiance looks like Jimmy Smits… if Jimmy fasted for 100 days.

  39. LBees says:

Sometimes it’s good to make a clean break. She obviously pivoted directions rather dramatically after Slumdog, and maybe this guy just wasn’t the one to hang with her for the long haul.

I say, it sucks to be dumped but what can you do? They weren’t meant to be. Better she takes action now, than the two of them become insulated and angry and divorce later.

  40. Malaika says:

Being of Indian origin I can only say that she’s hyped up way too much. There’s hundreds of Indian girls just as (if not way more) good looking as her. She is pretty, but so are Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, Aishwarya Rai and and many others…

  41. k says:

I think there are a lot of Hindi women who are far more striking, and I can’t say I was blown away by her performance in Slumdog, but maybe she will prove me wrong in Woody’s film.

  42. bellyache says:

Ditto Malaika & k… For a while there I thought I was the only one who thinks she looks very normal. She’s pretty yes, but it rather surprises me how the compliments showered on her are so.. Excessively glowing. Bollywood has about a dozen more beautiful than this, easily. I think hers is a case of being around at the right time and having a pretty enough face to gain the attention of a public who is otherwise ignorant of Eastern standards of beauty. It annoys me to be honest, cos she seems to be going places based on physical appearance alone. She hasn’t done squat for her “art”.

  43. Iggles says:

Wow, I didn’t know she has 4 films coming out soon! Go Freida!

I think she did the right thing by dumping her fiance. Why go through with marriage if there are doubts? If more people did this BEFORE marrying + having kids with people they were uncertain about there would be less divorces and broken homes.

  44. Malaika says:

@bellyache + K: definitely true. For the record: I don’t dislike her at all, so far she’s never done or said anything I would consider offensive in any way but I just think she’s overrated in the West and there are easily many more stunning leading ladies in Bollywood. She just happened to get picked by Danny Boyle for this movie and that catapulted her to Hollywood – along with the novelty factor of Indian actresses being rather rare on the western movie circuit so people think she’s beautiful when back home she’s pretty average. Whether she is a genuinely good actress with enough individuality and character to set herself apart from the masses of people trying to make it in Hollywood in the long run I don’t know?

  45. Dingles says:

She broke up with a guy before marrying him?? *clutches pearls* How DARE she! Doesn’t she know you’re supposed to ignore all those doubts, go through with the wedding, cheat on the guy two years into the marriage in a fit of miserable desperation then break up in a nasty, public divorce??? Gah. She’s obviously doing this all wrong.

  46. Isa says:

I can’t believe some of the comments. Just because there are women that are more beautiful than Freida doesn’t mean that she’s a dog. I think she is very beautiful and all her features are perfect.

I googled the other girls mentioned Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, Aishwarya Rai and I find Freida just as pretty as the others except for Aishwarya Rai. If it wasn’t for her nose that chick would be a human doll!

  47. Newyorking says:

I too don’t get the fawining over Pinto. She is pretty, but that is all, and was ok as an actress in Slumdog. I liked her a little, but saw an interview with her in India and after that was a bit disappointed. She was very condescending in her interview – Hollywood can fawn over her now, but I am not so sure she will go that far especially as a main lead in films. She just does not have that quality.

  48. slymm27 says:

welll…dnt think people r going on about her dumping her fiance……. i mean people get dumped!!!!!! It is the reason for dumping him that worries me…..is she the kind of woman who will move on to the next best thing?????

  49. Mistral says:

Hey, if it isn’t working, it isn’t working. Why marry and then divorce?
