Lily Allen’s pregnant style is even worse than her regular style

I actually want to like Lily Allen. I think that of all the pop stars, she actually seems like she’s got half a brain, and she might be fun. But she killed it for me a long time ago, when she kept giving interview after interview after exhaustive interview about how she was going to end her career and have a baby. She was basically playing one of the oldest famewhore moves in the book – getting attention for “leaving the music business” and simultaneously creating her own famewhore Bump Watch for everyone to comment on. Well, she’s now pregnant (by her boyfriend, who is not in the business), and she’s supposedly on her “break”. So why, perchance, is she on a red carpet, showing off her bump in this hideous dress? Well, it was the premiere of “her mum’s film” but I also think Lily just wanted some attention.

Bump watch! British singer Lily Allen, 25, showed off her growing belly at the London premiere of Tamara Drewe Monday.

“Its Elle magazine’s 25th birthday issue this month,” Allen tweeted before the premiere. “There’s a party tonight to celebrate but I can’t go. Sorry Elle. It’s the premiere for my mum’s film Tamara Drewe, so I’m going there instead.”

Allen — who is expecting her first child with boyfriend Sam Cooper after suffering a miscarriage in January 2008 — admits that she’s still adjusting to her pregnancy curves.

“I’m aware of the fact that I’ve put on a considerable amount of weight, and I didn’t want it to become a talking point,” she tweeted in August just after confirming her pregnancy. “I’m feeling vulnerable enough as it is. Hence the jeans and pyjama top. Just wanted to be relaxed and not think about all that.”

[From Us Weekly]

Alright… maybe I’ll give her a pass on walking the red carpet for her mother – I can understand her need and desire to publicly support her mom. But Lily did manage to make the evening all about her, didn’t she? Now the story is “Lily Allen debuts bump in a hideous dress” rather than “Lily Allen is a good daughter, supports mum.” The detailing on this dress – the accents on the hem and the big, puffy sleeves are so cheesy. Ugh. I hate this vintagey, “precious” oh-look-at-me-I’m-so-dainty style.

Or could it be that this is just a reoccurring instance of my continuing Bangs Trauma? Lily’s bangs have taken on a life of their own. My personal opinion: beyond the age of 10 years old, your bangs should not be this thick.

i like her dress and i think her hair looks cute. it is so good to see that her pregnancy goes well

  2. mila says:

@Susannah Leigh: Totally agree. I think Lily’s dress is cute, unusual and not something you expect to see on the red carpet, yet still elegant.

  3. kiko says:

well with that baby face she can keep rocking the ”thick bangs” style as long as she wants!!

  4. PrettyTarheel says:

I think you’re having bangs trauma. Or perhaps suffering the after-effects of Gosling hotness, which makes everything ugly by comparison. The dress is actually extremely cute, and I think the colors and the very simple lines save it from twee territory. No, it’s not Heidi Klum maternity style, but let’s be honest. Who really pulls that off, besides Heidi Klum?

  5. Wench. says:

This probably makes me very, very lame but I’ve been waiting to see a Lily Allen + bump picture. I’m looking beyond the dress and I’m just happy to see this pregnancy is going well for her.

  6. Vee says:

I think it is a cute dress. It would have been much better if the “swiss miss” sleeves were removed though. I don’t know who this gal is, really don’t care, but she looks good.

  7. bb says:

Can’t believe she’s 25. She looks about 15. At least now maybe she’s finally have boobs!

  8. searching4grace says:

it is a cute dress but puts me more in mind of a mumu. moomoo? muumuu? not necessarily something i would wear to a red carpet.

  9. Kaiser says:

Yes, I’m glad she’s having a healthy pregnancy, but she still pisses me off. And I hate the dress. But JMO, etc.

  10. Oi says:

Agree, the dress’ pattern is not good, but the design is ok. at least she’s not wearing minis and crap like that while insecure about her body and pregnant. I’m not saying that prego women can’t be sexy, but in public you gotta draw the line somewhere.

  11. KLO says:

She looks freakin awesome, totally cute. I don’t know what you’re going on about.
The pattern reminds me of some northern european folk costumes.

  12. gem says:

I think she looks cute and im happy th@ her pregnancy is going well, esp considering her last pregnancy tragedy.

  13. Susannah Leigh says:

It seems my first comment on this disappeared. So, I repeat, she looks fantastic! I think “vintagey, ‘precious’ oh-look-at-me-I’m-so-dainty” suits her perfectly. I hope she sticks with it.

  14. aenflex says:

Again, it’s the sleeves. UGH. The sleeves. Need. To. Go.
The bangs – same story. Fug.

  15. Moore says:

She looks fine to me. I would have traded out the clunky shoes though but I see no problem with it all.

  16. Alexa says:

Author of this post – I’d normally not share this because there’s a good chance it’ll cause hurt feelings (even though I’M the one with the problem, not Ms. Allen), but…ya…I’m not feelin’ the bangs – AT ALL – either. They’ve given me a wedgie from the very first time I laid eyes on them…and every time since. Why do I have this ridiculous problem? Don’t know, but I do.

  17. Kaiser says:

Alexa – Personally, my bangs trauma is the result of having bangs when I was a kid (similar to Lily’s), and absolutely hating them. My mom made me! I associate bangs with being forced into doing something, and with crappy childhoods.

  18. chris says:

I like the dress but the bangs aren’t so great. Some people can wear them and look cute, but they seem a bit much on her. I’ve always liked her face, though. She’s interesting looking, not in a bad way but in a good way. She’s cute.

  19. California Surfer says:

What does JMO mean? And I agree, it sucks to be forced to have bangs, that’s why I have dreads.

  20. blondie says:

Well, to be fair, she can’t really do anything about the baby bump. It’s not like she could leave it at home that night in order to not upstage her mom. And I’m sure SHE doesn’t think the dress is hideous lol 🙂

  21. lilred says:

@ California surfer: JMO= just my opinion

  22. Courtney says:

she looks great and if anybody should be excited about becoming a mom it’s her. after you’ve lost one or multiple pregnancies your next successful one is always a scary time. because as a mom your worried what if it happens again and I never get to hold a living child of my own. then when she finally does it’s a relief and she’s even more protective over her little one. and it’s not like being pregnant excempts a woman from doing her duities in her chosen field unless a doctor puts her on bedrest or something like that

  23. Alexa says:

Kaiser – so sorry to learn about your childhood bang trauma. Now I understand, and at least you have a reason for your opinion. I don’t understand why her forehead drapes agitate me so — nor why nobody else is seeing something as unattractive as I do when I look at them. (And I usually am very sensitive about criticizing someone’s appearance. I’m not considered very attractive, so I’m touchy about people judging others based on their appearance and try not to participate in it in any way.) Maybe it’s the fact that – as someone already commented – thick bangs worn by a NON-child are a “no-no.” (Although I find them to be atrocious on ANYONE of any age.)

  24. Alarmjaguar says:

whatevs, when I was pregnant, I didn’t really care what I looked like as long as I was comfortable!

  25. Bodhi says:

I love the dress, but the bangs & make-up are absolutely HIDEOUS!

  26. jemshoes says:

LOL! Totally agree on the bangs (or ‘fringe” as we say here in Oz) Kaiser … no opinion on her or her music but the dress is awful!

  27. Confuzzle says:

When is her next blog meltdown over something petty?

  28. albeli says:

The only problem I have with this look is the bangs. I think the dress fits her quirky personality. The bangs are just bad.

  29. Ally says:

She has so much talent, I don’t care about her interviews.

Plus, it’s not fair to treat this as a fame-chasing outing. Of course her mum would have wanted her there, and would we be mentioning this premiere/movie if Lily Allen hadn’t shown up? Nope. So she was doing her mum a solid.

If you want to whack an Allen, go after her father Keith (the corpse in Trainspotting). He’s a big creep who wrote a book talking smack about all the British actresses he tricked into shagging him. Ew. Who wouldn’t have issues growing up with that around?

And the dress is cute. Slimming, and the Swiss Miss pattern directs the eye away from the midsection. If she’d wanted to draw attention, I think she would have gone with a dress w/ arrow patterns pointing at it.
