Tim Gunn: Suri Cruise is her parents’ “dress up doll and fashion victim”

wenn2685958

Someone had to say it! And thank God that someone is my best friend, Tim Gunn. Tim’s “Bitches Better Recognize” Tour continues, and in today’s chapter, Mr. Gunn takes on Lady Gaga, Lindsay Lohan and… Suri Cruise? I accept the criticisms of Gaga, because God knows, she loves it when we talk about her, and anyway, Tim only really says that she’s just copying the meat dress from a trend in the 1960s. The Lohan criticism… well, I could just listen to him talk about Lindsay Lohan all day and night. I want him to talk about her weave. I want him to talk about her lips. But in the end, he only talks about her gig with Ungaro last year. Then comes the segue into Suri Cruise. While I agree with Tim on general principle (I’m always going to be Team Gunn), I’m not sure he should be going so hard on little Suri:

Lindsay Lohan may be working on getting her career back on track, but her venture last fall as the fashion director at Ungaro was ghastly, says Tim Gunn. The “Project Runway” mentor told Billy Bush and Kit Hoover on Thursday’s Access Hollywood Live that Lohan’s collection was a major fashion faux pas.

“Mr. Ungaro is dead and God knows he must have been rolling over in his grave, but I thought, this is one of the last couture houses left in this entire world. Lindsay Lohan is the creative director? How absurd is that!” Gunn told Bush and Hoover of the actress, who once served as a “Project Runway” guest judge. “It would be like asking, I don’t know, like, asking Suri Cruise to pilot a fighter jet.”

Speaking of Suri, Gunn, who just released his latest book, “Gunn’s Golden Rules: Life’s Little Lessons for Making It Work,” fired off on the toddler’s looks and her famous parents.

“Suri is, she’s her mother and father’s dress up doll and I feel in many ways she’s a fashion victim and it’s just very inappropriate,” Gunn critiqued.

As for those kitten heels the 4-year-old has sported, Gunn said those don’t work at all.

“I think it’s unsafe too. She’s a little kid and [she’s] tottering around on these stilettos or quasi stilettos. It’s really inappropriate and I feel bad for her in a manner of speaking,” he said.

While he’s critical of Suri’s outfits and Lindsay Lohan’s fashion gigs, Gunn is less concerned about Lady Gaga and her MTV Video Music Awards meat dress.

“Well, it’s not fashion, it’s a costume and it was meant to provoke, it did, people are talking about it, but do you really want to smell your costume,” the former Parsons New School For Design faculty members said. “I mean, God only knows what it was like.”

Gunn isn’t sure though that Lady Gaga’s fashion forays will continue to move people.

“I have great respect for her talents, I think that this way of presenting herself is going to grow tired and stale eventually, and if it’s about shock value, what’s next? The mind reels when you really think about where it could go,” he said.

See, I think Tim was just bashing Katie and Tom for not saying “no” to Suri, or for even buying Suri those pumps. And they were pumps, Tim, or even kitten heels, not stilettos. Personally, I agree that Katie and Tom use Suri as their little dress-up doll and that they should be saying “no” to her. But I also think that Suri is picking out a lot of her crap – just as Shiloh Jolie-Pitt picks out her tomboy gear. And at the end of the day, who really wants to pick on a little kid for their fashion sense? Especially when we could pick on Suri for choosing all of those horrible outfits for her mom. In any case, Tim better watch his ass, because Xenu is about climb all up in that sh-t.

  1. Super Sleuth says:

Does he honestly believe that Katie or Tom have any say whatsoever in what that “very strong woman” wears????

I do believe they should make that woman wear a coat in the winter, though.

  2. LindaR says:

This man has no children for quite some time so I do not believe he is qualified, in this particular context, to comment on how parents dress their children. I used to love dressing up my little girl and boy. Both are now happily married, grown and with babies of their own to dress up. Whether you put your child in the best you can afford from Walmart or Petit Tresor, you are proud of them, think they are the cutest things in the whole world and love to show them off. Tim Gunn hasn’t got a clue about this.

  3. lucy2 says:

Tread lightly, Tim. By all means go after the spoiled bratty adult divas, but I think you have to be very careful when publicly discussing someone else’s children. I sort of agree with him, but wouldn’t go on TV and say as much.

  4. Johnny'sGirl says:

“In any case, Tim better watch his ass, because Xenu is about climb all up in that sh-t.”……LOL,Kaiser, Couldnt agree more!

  5. jen says:

I think she usually looks cute. Hate those JonBenet shoes in the last pic tho.

  6. The Hamm is My Dream Man says:

I agree with him kinda-I think the Cruises are using her as a dress-up doll and make her this perfectly primped child.

But, and this is a big but, maybe she actually likes dressing like that. In my experience, being a youngin’ once and all, I very much enjoyed being able to wear my fancy clothes and fancy shoes. I wanted to wear dresses and little heels all the time and carry a purse with candy and Barbie lipstick in it.

Plus, kids won’t wear what they don’t want to wear without serious tantrums and constant pulling and tugging. That I used to see all the time at my former job.

  7. Janeth says:

I think they dress her adorable, love the kitten heel. I use to rock them when I was a kid. Nothing wrong with the kitten heels! I’m also half Mexican so they dressed me in dresses and kitten heels for school. So eh can’t really comment I suppose. lol

  8. Atticus says:

    Lucy2: couldn’t agree more.

  9. Leticia says:

I agree with him 100% regarding Suri Cruise. And those heels that they let her wear remind me of those creepy creepy kiddie beauty pageants.

  10. a says:

with suri’s height ratio verse an adult woman, would they still be considered kitten heels?

  11. Aurea says:

That kid’s going to have bunions just like dear-old-Mom’s by the age of 12!

  12. bizzy says:

tim, i loff you forever, but honestly this is beneath you.

  13. GreenGinger says:

@a, I was thinking the exact same thing!

I have to admit I’m getting a tad uncomfortable about Tim Gunn’s willingness to dish. But privately, I agree with his assessment of Suri. Her “kitten heels” are very cute, but I think they’re more appropriate for dressing up at home than going out. But, that’s just my opinion.

And he is right on the money about Lady Gaga!

  14. Feebee says:

I think he was having a go at T&K. He can hardly take a 4 year old to task. The fact he doesn’t have children is a moot point. He’s giving his opinion on what her parents allow her to wear. They’re inviting comment, don’t tell me her wardrobe isn’t pretty well planned. I know you have to pick your battles with the kids but when it’s 45 deg and you’re backing down to allow your 3 or 4 year to wear her pretty summer dress without a coat, you’re an idiot. She’s puts in on or she doesn’t go.

  15. Kim says:

I only have a problem with the heels

  16. Embee says:

He was clearly stating that Suri was a victim to fashion choices by her parents.

    Spot on.

  17. SRM says:

I have a 4yo and she loves dresses and skirts and she picks out about 90 percent of what she wears daily. I have no problem with how they dress her, except the no coat thing. However, I would never, ever let her wear heels like that at her age. They are dangerous. A 4yo is still developing their coordination and it is very likely she would fall. And they probably are the equivalent of stillettos for an adult woman. I am sure they don’t allow her to wear those often but they can’t be good for her still growing feet. What a beautiful little girl though.

  18. dingle says:

love tim. i played dress up with heels when i was a kid AT HOME. i did not wear heels to the park or walking around the streets. they just indulge that kid’s every whim. what is she going to have to look forward to when she already has everything a 4 yr old

  19. Po says:

I think her parents invite those opinions by talking about what a fashionista she is all of the time. You don’t see too many celebrity parents who parade their kids around like this. They are obviously planning on a career for her like Will and Jada so if they can’t take the heat keep little Suri out of the kitchen. Just my opinion.

  20. Po says:

Let me add one more thing for all of those people who think that Suri is photographed that way just because of who her parents are. I don’t believe it for a second. I think her parents, or their publicists, call the paps just like many other stars. There is a reason why we see so much of some celebrity kids and cant name others.

  21. iKat says:

I was just about to criticise the heels, when I remembered that I practically FORCED my mum to buy me a pair of pink heels when I was really very young (AND they also came with a wand and a crown! How was i supposed to resist? :P)

I used to wear those all the time and yes i must of looked ridiculous, but I LOVED them.
I think it’s pretty harmless. Just a little girl having fun.

Now Katie Holmes saying that Suri pickes out her outfits for her: THAT is odd.

  22. OtherChris says:

My daughter walks around in platic heeled dress up shoes all the time. If I could afford to waste money on those little shoes that Suri has, I’d let her have a pair. She’s a gorgeous kid and she looks appropriate, for the most part.

    The parents, however, are freaks.

  23. Moreaces says:

Yes, I blame the parents, that poor child could not pick her parents,,

  24. Kolby says:

Should a child’s eyes be so “dead”?

  25. Jeri says:

I took it as him bashing Tom & Katie, not Suri. Although, Katie has terrible taste, maybe it’s all Katie and she’s blaming Suri for Katie’s own poor taste.

  26. OC lady says:

Ok, Tim. I love you and all but I wouldn’t talk about little kids. Baby Xenu has enough problems in her life with Crazy Tom and Robot mommy. Shopping is a much needed outlet for her. At least she’s rich and can afford it.

  27. Lardy Chops says:

I worry less about the shoe choices than I do them dragging her out to restaurants very late at night when she’s clearly exhausted and needs to be in bed.

  28. Bina says:

Oh for God’s sake, she’s a kid, not a contestant on America’s Next Top Model. “Dead” eyes my ass.

  29. GatsbyGal says:

There is this really weird child pageant vibe going on here, isn’t there. Suri’s feet are going to be fuuuuuuucked up. All her little growing bones pushed out of alignment from a childhood spent in heels. And seriously, who cares if she dresses herself or whether her parents dress her – either option in this case in bad. If her parents dress her like this, then shame on them. If Suri dresses herself, then shame on her parents not reeling her in a little.

  30. danielle says:

I find Suri’s heels to be grotesque. A young girl does not need to be wearing heels.

  31. Bodhi says:

    I agree with Tim 110%

  32. Kloops says:

I’m with Tim on this one. I think Suri is dressed inappropriately most of the time. Particularly for outside activities (heels!? no coat!?). Now, I have a daughter and fully understand the appeal of this type of clothing for little girls, and my daughter is more than welcome to play dress-up at home, but when out she has to wear more age and weather appropriate clothing.

  33. hmm says:

Tim is batting a thousand this week.

  34. eja102 says:

    what a cute kid.

  35. Tia C says:

Oh, what’s the big deal, he’s not wrong. I love people who have the cojones to tell it like it is. And Tim Gunn does it with style and relish!

  36. mymy says:

Oh please. If you don’t buy the stuff the kids won’t be wearing the stuff. Period. Dress up is not for walking around NYC. It is played with kids in the home. The consumerism of it all is beyond ridiculous. She is 4.I wonder what kind of parents act like a kid can’t be guided into less expensive clothing. More appropriate clothing.
She was wearing this stuff long before she could decide. It is a pattern. Don’t worry Realizing that Tom and Katie influence their child will not hurt you.I think Tim Gunn is great

  37. She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named says:

Kids def. pick out their own stuff and have strong feelings about it from a VERY early age, and for the most part, if it’s not too revealing then fine.

Not wearing the jacket actually doesn’t bother me, the kid isn’t an idiot, she knows when she’s cold and she can always put one on when she needs one. I don’t think cold weather makes you sick, viruses do. I’m all for a little autonomy.

I draw the line at heels for kids tho. (I’m not talking about playing dress up once in a while) they’re still growing, it’s bad for their bones and posture.

But also, heels are made to make women’s legs look longer and sleeker and supposedly “sexier,” so it just seems very inappropriate for a little girl.

  38. funnygirl says:

I agree-little kids grow out of their clothes so fast that they shouldn’t be wearing designer wear at such a young age. And none of Suri’s clothes actually look designer-kids clothes always look cute, no matter where you get them from as a rule. Its v easy to dress a little kid. Obviously its good to get good quality stuff but my gosh, that girl is going to be SUCH a brat when she gets older-expect drug problems etc a la Paris Hilton etc.

  39. Bunny says:

Please Tim keep these comments coming, seriously he is awesome.

  40. Lukie says:

    I co-sign Tim Gunn!

@mymy: EXACTLY! I used to (and still do) think the reason they dress her the way they do, especially the no coat thing, was b/c they had some type of deal going on where her clothes were free as long as the parents made sure she was photographed wearing it.

No coat. They just pick her up and wrap a blanket around her like a baby. I will never get it.

  41. Nancy says:

Pitiful- a grown man picking on a little child who just likes to play dress up. Team Suri. Get a life Tim and pick on someone your own size, instead of a defenseless child.

  42. jemshoes says:

I like looking at celebutots in magazines, etc and I would be happier if the only photos I ever saw of celebrity kids were from authorised, official events, photo shoots, etc and not the pap shots …

Suri Cruise is one of my least favourite celebutots, mostly because of who her parents are. If the Xenu gossip is true and they do treat Suri like a mini-adult, her wardrobe choices go beyond her simply being a strong-willed 4 yr-old; it might be more to do with how she is being parented.

  43. LolaBella says:

    @mymy: well said; ITA.

I love that Tim doesn’t hold back and I don’t see it as ‘attacking’ a child, I see it as him calling out the parents about the way they are handling/raising their kid. Nothing more than what we grouse about here re:Tom and Katie or other celebrity parents *coughWillandJadacough*

As much as I love Lady GaGa, ITA with Tim about her; I am slowly reaching my ‘meh’ point with her.

LOL @ ‘Bitches Better Recognize tour’.

Tim ain’t pulling no punches AND he has a book to sell, people.

  44. juice in la says:

I spent the evening with Mr. Gunn and 500 of his devoted LA fans last night – at Borders.

He is every bit as gracious and charming and fun as it appears.

  45. Alicia says:

Ok, Kids that age should NOT be wearing heels! This is crazy, not from the fashion point of view but heels are bad even for adults, she will grow up with many problems from that, it will deform her body, terrible…..

  46. Cheyenne says:

Kolby: Should a child’s eyes be so “dead”?
    ==========================================

You took the words right out of my keyboard. You look into Suri’s eyes and there is nothing there. They’re just blank.

  47. Menace says:

Team Suri. She may be just a little thing, but I bet she could slap the bitch outta Tim Gunn.

  48. TeeTee says:

He is right and she looks creepy, like they are making her grow up super fast-and she’s.. like 4yrs old.

just reminds me of the lil Bonet girl, smdh! all she is missing is the up do and the make-up, which will soon follow for her 5th birthday–a bare minerals starter kit, LOL!!

  49. georgiagrl says:

    Po
I agree with you 100%! They invite this crappy attention on the kid, who is no cuter or well dressed that anybody elses kid, and I don’t have any. And the dangle earrings?? Come on people its not cute, just plain stupid and i blame the parents and the stylist they’ve obviously have hired for the kid. IMO, she’d be cuter wearing Gap kids or Target stuff. High price don’t make it cute, look at Lohan.

  50. jm says:

I have 3 young’uns, my youngest is 2 and I’m sure she’d LOVE to wear shiny “heels”. Fact is, the way toddlers run and climb everywhere, it’s not safe.

That’s where the parents come in and say a big fat NO.

  51. garvels says:

The parents are inviting this by constantly talking up Suri’s fashion sense and I read somewhere that the parents mentioned that she is the one that approves of Katie’s outfits….bizarre people. They should do a better job of shielding Suri from the public and allow her to be a kid…..I guess Suri is on the Willow and Jaden Smith Hollywood kid track. Both families, the Smith’s(Will) and Cruises are devout Scientologists, so maybe this is a part of their teachings-I mean cult….”Let’s make even more money for Scientology by pimping out the kids.”

  52. cruiz2 says:

Tim Gunn knows & hollers!!! This is more than “dress-up.” Her clothes & shoes are fitted perfectly. Most kids dress up w/over-sized adult clothes/shoes over their own & have a random quality. You can spot them in public, cute & fun. Big difference here. Does Suri schedule her own fittings? – not likely. Busted parents!

  53. cruiz2 says:

Hey, is Katie missing a back bottom tooth in 1st pic? Did she forgot her spacer, or had a tooth pulled – maybe why no teeth smiles. See that?

  54. Eleonor says:

I find this images of Suri Cruise disturbing in a way I cannot describe; those heels are disturbing, but she always makes me think to that poor JonBenet Ramsey, because she’ too exposed.

  55. Rosanna says:

I can’t stand Tom Cruise and I find Katie Holmes to be dumb and plain. This being said, Suri just ROCKS 🙂 Does Tim Gunn really think that strong-willed children don’t exist? Or does she think that Christian Siriano would run around dressed like anybody else as a child? Does Tom think that people all of a sudden start being fashionable after they turn 18??? I don’t really think Tom ever gets around kids, let alone understanding one…!

  56. Super Sleuth says:

In answer to SHE WHO MUST NOT BE NAMED:

A 4 year old who is active and outside without a coat in the winter may feel warm if they’re being active, but meanwhile they could be ignoring the beginning signs of frostbite such as tingling in their fingers or toes. When your core body temperature gets too low, it can lower your immune system and can make you more susceptible to illnesses. So yes, the cold can affect your health and I think if it is cold enough outside to warrant Tom and Katie wearing coats, they should be responsible enough to put one on Suri, as well.

  57. Dhavy says:

If these celebrities don’t want their kids to be criticized then they shouldn’t be displayed like ornaments. Unfortunately the paparazzi will not stop taking pictures of these kids so it will be up to the parents to protect them and by now we all know Suri’s parents don’t mind if they talk about their kid

  58. P.J. says:

I know for sure that childrens’ clothing designers send clothes free to celebrity parents. I don’t think they HAVE to be photographed wearing the clothes, though the designers are certainly hoping they will be.

So Suri isn’t just a little doll for mom and dad to dress up, she’s a model!

  59. Cherry says:

Is it just me or is Tim Gunn becoming what he rails against? He’s in danger of appearing to be off the rails if he keeps this up.

  60. mike says:

Tim Goonn is such a miserable prick, he needs to just curl up and die.

Preferably when Tiny Tom beats the crap out of him with his lifts.

Tiny Tom and Tim Goonn so deserve each other. Both are miserable queens who’re better off dead.

  61. T. says:

My take on this whole thing, is that like many of you, Suri is too young to wear heels. Her cute little feet are too small and her bones are just being developed. And walking around without a coat when her parents are clearly wearing coats and sweaters. I mean who are the parents here and who is the ‘boss’? A funny story that my cousin told me. She and her oldest daughter were always fighting about wearing a coat in the middle of winter. Finally, my cousin said ‘Fine, you don’t want to wear a coat in 20 degree weather, just go ahead.’ Her child was in 8th grade at that time. Well, she came home and said ‘OMG, Mom! I was FREEZING!’ And that finished the problem. She always wore a coat again! I just laughed, she learned her lesson!

  62. Amy says:

She is an adorable cute little girl. Let her be.It’s her mom that needs to glamour-up.

  63. Hello, i think that i noticed you visited my blog thus i got here to ?go back the want?.I am trying to find issues to enhance my website!I assume its ok to make use of some of your concepts!!
