Alexa Chung is “frustrated” because everyone thinks she has an eating disorder

elle2

I’ve mentioned it before, but I really dislike Alexa Chung. Some of it has nothing to do with her, really, only with the media interest in her, and the promotion of Alexa as an “It Girl” or new kind of fashion icon. Yes, some of the clothes she wears are interesting, and she’s a total label whore. But I can’t stand her style in general, and in interviews, she tends (to me) to come across as full of herself. Also, I don’t find attractive in the least, so the idea that women want to look like her – well, I just think some women should aim higher. Every time I see her in magazines, I roll my eyes. Plus, there’s the little matter of my husband Gerard Butler flirting with her. That bitch.

Anyway, Alexa is the cover girl for the November issue of Elle UK. The two covers (news-stand and subscriber) are above and below. They’re pretty crappy covers, and you can tell that Elle’s editors were really trying to minimize the little cross-eyed quality that Alexa sometimes has in photos. In the interview excerpts (via People), Alexa talks about how frustrating it is with everyone thinking she has an eating disorder.

British presenter and model Alexa Chung, with her unique shabby-chic style and quirky sense of humor, is often seen gracing the front row at fashion shows (she’s currently doing the rounds in Paris), and even has a Mulberry bag named after her. But constantly having to read speculation on her weight and whether she is suffering from an eating disorder has finally taken its toll on the fashionista.

Upset and angry about the ever-present rumors, she’s decided to speak out on the subject.

“I cannot express how frustrating it is to not be believed when you say, ‘I don’t have an eating disorder,’” she states in the November edition of British Elle. “I am naturally very thin. I get even thinner when I’m stressed. And you cannot imagine how stressed I was last year,” she says in the candid interview.

Referring to her U.S. television debut on MTV’s It’s On with Alexa Chung, which was later canned, the petite Brit adds: “Anyone could see that I wasn’t doing great and I wasn’t coping.”

It was after the show finished last year, that the eating disorder rumors spread on the Internet to such a degree that the 26-year-old was forced to issue a denial statement. And yet still, her slight frame continues to garner unwanted attention.

“It angers me because I don’t want to be a pin-up for young girls just for being thin,” she says in the feature, which sees her as the cover girl, channeling her favorite 1960’s style icons (Jean Shrimpton and Julie Christie amongst others). “I don’t want to be admired for being thin as opposed to being dressed well, and I don’t want the two to get confused.”

[From People]

Well… on one side, I can see why people think she has an eating disorder, because the girl is really, really slender. Her legs, especially, are ridiculously thin. On the other side, her denials are so passionate, I kind of believe her. Perhaps she really is that thin. And perhaps there’s some cocaine in the mix too? She seems like the kind of girl who would live on cocaine, cigarettes, Diet Coke and fashion (Kate Moss Syndrome).

  1. Blondie says:

She’s skinny because she gets stressed (all the time by her comments and the look of her over the past few years) and doesn’t eat….

So I guess stress is the new name for anorexia??

  2. LeeLee says:

I had heard the name before but never saw her. Can’t imagine wanting to look like her. Nothing special. And I agree, about Kate Moss Syndrome (KMS).

  3. nobbystyles says:

Ignoring for a moment that no-one with an eating disorder ever publicly admits to having one until after the fact – how else does she think she’s going to get media coverage when no-one has the faintest clue what it is she’s supposed to do for a living? In all the UK press articles I’ve seen the whole piece always revolves around how thin she is, and in this respect I think she’s our Tori Spelling – in the grip of not anorexia, but the constant desire to keep her mug in the papers!

  4. Kitten says:

ITA with your assessment of this chick, Kaiser. And I also don’t think she’s anorexic.

  5. lucy2 says:

What a shot to the supermodel ego, to have them style your hair to basically hide your face for a magazine cover.

  6. tekla says:

I think she’s telling the truth. she’s a naturally thin gorgeous girl with a good sense of style. damn her! :]

  7. Rosali says:

I don’t like her at all but I belive her, I’m also that thin and I eat everything.. my body just burns fat really fast.. not all thin girls have an eating-disorder… just like not all fat-people are fat because they are sick, some just eat to much!

  8. Oi says:

@Rosali: Great comment! Your wording is awesome!

  9. Colleen says:

Her comments about wanting to be admired for being dressed well are ridiculous and self centered, but I do believe she’s naturally thin.

She’s rocking the same Belle De Jour rip- off sweater/sweater dress w/ collar in 3 of the 5 looks here, and the white outfit is just dorky. It wouldn’t be hard to look better than her if one had the amount of time & cash she does to spend on clothes. Her taste/ eye is nothing special; not sure why the fashion world is captivated by her.

  10. sickofit says:

na, honest, look at her hair, this screams eating disorder to me

  11. Arianna says:

    she’s hot i like her
she doesnt look too skinny to me :s couldn’t help to get some toning on her but meh i can think of a bunch of grosser looking people

  12. Samigirl says:

That cover is TERRIBLE. Her face looks AWFUL. That being said, I have tons of girlfriends who eat constantly and never gain any weight. And, ok, maybe I’m a teensy jealous.

  13. jen says:

Well she doesn’t have to worry about me thinking that, because I have no idea who she is.

  14. Sara says:

I don’t care if she has an eating disorder but saying you don’t eat when you’re stressed is a bullshit excuse. That’s like saying, oh no, I don’t have a drug problem, I only do coke when I’m stressed! I don’t have a drinking problem, I only drink when stressed!

Rachel Zoe and Kate Bosworth said the exact same thing when people asked them why they were so thin.

  15. Meg says:

I miss when models were better looking than the average woman. Now you just have to be 6 ft tall and anor- uh…naturally skinny.

  16. Kirsten says:

I kinda get the stress thing. That used to happen to me when I was younger. Even now if my day is insanely busy I’ll literally forget to eat. Then the second I sit down and relax Ill scarf down anything in site.

  17. carrie says:

who is she? and the blue dress looks awful!

  18. Kitten says:

Sorry, Sara but when I’m stressed I eat less and when I’m sad I eat less too. People manifest and cope with stress and emotional issues differently. Some people eat more when they are stressed or sad. It’s not an “excuse” it’s just a reality.

  19. kelbear says:

She looks naturally thin to me.

  20. Lady D says:

Another naturally thin one who loses more weight when stressed. I had an old lady ask me in the bathroom of a local hotel restaurant if I purged. I didn’t know what the word meant until I got home and looked it up. I must be very careful to eat during stressful periods. I’m 5’8″ and I can drop to 110 from 125 in less than 10 days if I’m stressing. I am also so sick of being asked if I have an eating disorder, its been going on for 20 freakin’ years. Enough

  21. Lex says:

i eat less when i’m stressed/sad also, and i have dropped pounds because of it. However, i’m not anorexic – 5’1 117 lbs. Yet, i have a best friend who was “stressed” in college, and became full blown anorexic – believe me scary skinny – got help for it..now she’s great and at a healthy/happy weight. so, who knows..

  22. fabulous says:

I don’t think you US girls ‘get’ her. UK fash is edgy, cool its not about the perfect blowdry, fake white teeth etc.

  23. tattoofreak says:

I believe she doesn’t have a eating disorder. She probably doesn’t eat that much because she’s super busy..I only eat one meal a day when I’m busy..which is most of the time. I can’t help it that I lose a few pounds from it and she doesn’t look sickly to me. She looks pefectly normal..like any other normal thin woman.

  24. fabulous says:

there is a very, very funny video on youtube that sort of explains the East London Look its called “being a dickhead’s cool”. Worth checking out although I’m not sure the humour will translate. FF xx

  25. aenflex says:

    face ugly

  26. Kitten says:

@fabulous-There’s nothing about her fashion sense that screams “edgy” to me. Epic fail if that’s what she’s going for.

  27. michael says:

she is gorgeous! except that purple disaster lace vomit dress. she doesn’t seem too thin to me, though! i’m jealous. :o(

  28. Bodhi says:

@fabulous ~ Not all of us US girls are all about the perfect blowout & blinding veneers, myself included. I think Zooey is a great example of “edgy” in the US.

I do like the cover where Alexa is kneeling; that is a great one

  29. Embee says:

I really like the cover shot of her standing. And I like the olive green dress with boots (the bag and her hair are awful).

Nothing about her appearance otherwise appeals to me but I tend to prefer more delicate facial features and sturdier bodies than she.

  30. Bonie says:

She is famous because millions of girls started following her when she scooped up Alex Turner, the singer and songwriter in the Arctic Monkeys, a band that was famous in 2006. I think they got together in 2008 and she is still riding that Alex-Turner based crest of popularity. So, good on her for knowing how to manipulate the fashion media and now even the mainstream media. That’s what she should be famous for, IMHO. I have nothing against her personally, but man, she’s everywhere these days!

  31. Roxanne75 says:

Women get so catty and think it’s totally okay for them to complain about a skinny woman but would never do that to an overweight woman..why is that?

  32. Crash2GO2 says:

@sara: I too eat less when I am stressed. Everyone responds to stress differently. I had a very good friend who would eat more. For me, my adrenaline gets going and I simply canNOT get more than just bits down at a time. Our stomachs are closely tied with our emotions – that much has been scientifically proven.

  33. Wif says:

I don’t know who she is, but I like her…because she looks like me. I mean OMG she looks like she could be my twin except for the height and weight differences. And I’ve always considered myself plain, I guess I need to hire a stylist.

  34. Dingles says:

Funny how every single woman in the entertainment industry just happens to be naturally skeletal-thin and have a super high metabolism.

  35. Miss Beca says:

    she’s sort of…blah looking, isn’t she?

  36. hmm(the original) says:

Roxanne75- I think Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Kelly Clarkson, Gabby Sidibe, and others would probably disagree with your assessment.

  37. Anon73 says:

@colleen : For your comment : “Her taste/ eye is nothing special; not sure why the fashion world is captivated by her”

AGREED. Guessing Alexa is the wealthy daugther of someone, who can pay to have a publicist arrange for her visibility. Also also likely buy the designers clothes. But if I go to my local mall, I see avg girls way more (naturally) stylish and cuter than her, hands down.

  38. Chelly says:

I actually think she’s average since I’m way thinner than her. But I can see why people think she’s ED -which she probably is- since “stress” is another word for skipping meals. She’s just another Rachel Zoe type who’s full of herself. I totally don’t get why any girl would want to look like a greasy haired boy-woman.

  39. Tia C says:

@ Dingles: Yah, isn’t that a funny coincidence?

Sounds like a whole lotta denial going on all over this post. Anorexic or not, this chick obviously doesn’t eat [much], whatever the reason may be.

  40. Shannon says:

When I am really upset or stressed out, not only do I not eat – I puke uncontrollably. If it’s really bad, it can last for two weeks. I’ve been known to lose 10-15 pounds in one of these bouts, and it is NOT on purpose, NOT intentional and I wish so much that it would never happen to me.

Stress really does affect some people this way. It is infuriating when people try to imply that I am bulimic. Bulimic people make themselves throw up on PURPOSE. I do NOT. I have to take medications that people with cancer on chemo take just to be able to swallow some chicken broth. It’s horrible. And I am at increased risk for things like throat cancer, ulcers, and eroded tooth enamel because of it. It’s not a freakin’ walk in the park and I can empathize with other women who are physically affected by stress like this. Leveling charges of an eating disorder just causes MORE stress and humiliation. Especially the patronizing looks when you vehemently deny that you have an eating disorder. It’s amazing how many people think they’re doctors and can diagnose you.

Now sometimes it’s obvious, when someone actually looks like a skeleton and insists there are no problems then you know something is up. But this woman doesn’t look anywhere near that point, and I think it’s irresponsible to speculate. If she says it’s stress, then I believe her. Because I know what it feels like to not be believed and it makes me want to scream.

  41. 6 says:

I realize that there are women who have a naturally super thin body but I don’t see that with her. If you are constantly defending it ala Keira Knightly, then I would lean in the “you are anorexic and in deanial” direction.

  42. malachais says:

She looks exactly like the woman my ex-husband cheated on me with, which automatically makes me hate her.. just kidding of course.

Some of these models are just downright not-so pretty.

  43. Keyanna says:

She’s average looking, forgettable and very thin. That’s what the designers want models to look like. They don’t want a model’s beauty taking away from their designs. They want a manikin and she definitely fits the bill. As for her style, I don’t see it. She just pulls on outrageously priced designer clothes and everyone licks it up.

  44. d says:

Sorry but the naturally thin excuse doesnt hold water when she was visibly larger around 2006…always slim, but never so thin.

  45. KatC says:

I think she’s really beautiful. I’ve never seen her before this post, but I love her face. She doesn’t really look ‘too thin’ to me, no sharp bones or anything. I really love the two Elle photos of her, she has that carelessly beautiful androgeny thing going. I’m also more drawn to faces with strong bone structure, as oppossed to those delicatly proportioned ones, they’re both beautiful and interesting to me. Love. It.

  46. tfb says:

Funny how every single anonymous internet commentator claims to drop weight when stressed. Personal antecdotes don’t prove anything. I don’t know Alexa Chung’s BMI but I would wager she is in the category of “underweight.”

  47. Isa says:

I don’t get her appeal either.
    I don’t think she’s anorexic.
I totally relate to you Shannon! I also can’t eat when I’m stressed and puke when I try. I hate it.
And I don’t have an eating disorder, my stomach just can’t handle the stress.

  48. Dee Vine says:

@Roxanne75…so true women hate on skinny girls and call big women (even obese like Gabourey Siddebe sp?)beautiful. Why can’t women be beautiful in all shape and form?

I am one of those skinny girls who everyone thinks is anorexic. I eat anything I want anytime, and been the same weight for 15 years. There are really people like us who can’t gain weight and are not on heroin or anorexic. I tire of women calling women like me not real women cos I dont have big breasts and butt.

  49. Saoirse says:

I agree with everyone else on here who’s said they can’t eat when they’re stressed. I’m in the process of gaining back the weight I lost due to some severe stress in my life. When it’s really bad, I can’t hardly eat, I can’t sleep and most of the time I feel like throwing up, so to say it’s a BS excuse…must be nice to not have to deal with those symptoms at all.

  50. Andrea-2 says:

anorexic or not? Edgy or not? I don’t care; I’m too busy praying to the gods of fashion to please make gladiator sandals and ankle boots obsolete! No one, and I do mean NO ONE, looks good in them.

  51. tripmom says:

I think she’s adorable and unique looking. Love her for being successful without looking generic, and I think she has great personal style.

  52. jemshoes says:

After pregnancy and childbirth (traumatic mentally, emotionally and physically), I lost the 20 kgs (? pounds) I’d gained in a few months because I didn’t eat. I was too stressed out, anxious and unhappy with the baby blues – and had to force myself to eat. Now that I’ve recovered, I’m enjoying food again and have an appetite. So I believe this girl when she says she was too stressed out to eat. Some people (like me) just respond to stress by not eating while others eat when they are stressed and unhappy or because of it. It’s absolutely not the same thing as when a cokehead says “I do coke, but I’m not a cokehead,” or when a smoker says, “I only smoke socially,” etc.

  53. Camille says:

I think she’s a very pretty girl, but those covers are damn awful!
I don’t know enough about her to dislike her, so I’m on the fence about her personality, but she seems fairly harmless to me. *shrug*

  54. Crash2GO2 says:

Good grief all your doubters. Go look at the symptom list of depression! One of the signs is weight loss! Just because you’ve never experienced weight loss due to stress or depression, don’t sneer at others, any more than I would sneer at anyone for comfort eating (or whatever) while going through a difficult time! I lost 10 lbs while going through my divorce and it took me 2 years to gain it back. Do you think I liked looking like a bony wraith? Niet.

  55. Katyusha says:

    @tfb

On the flipside, a bunch of commenters saying she does have an eating disorder doesn’t prove anything, either.

  56. Carol says:

She has that Rachel Zoe look. I guess thats in now. What kind of underwear to you wear with a dress that short?

  57. Jacquie says:

How does she look any different from any other model or actress?

  58. truthzbetta says:

Whoever she is, she did just admit she lost weight from eating nothing, right? Anorexia by proxy.

Anyone who forgets something like “eating” so regularly their jaw bone could cut steak isn’t worth my finding out wtf she is.

  59. Lisa Chu says:

most (but not all) Asian women, especially Chinese, have naturally smaller frames so I don’t see what the fuss is all about but she does look VERY skinny (after all she’s a UK size 4! lol)
I admit I do admire peter pan collar dresses and striped tees but NEVER try to look anything like her, I just like smart looking clothes and the occasional ‘girly dolly’ look.

The one thing I don’t really like about her is the fact that she tries to act very english; dress english, talk a very annoying english accent, date english guys, which I think makes her a fake and it seems like her Chinese roots are invisible..
