Rihanna is the cover girl for the current issue of Billboard Magazine. Something has happened to RiRi lately. She’s turning into a real bitch. I mean that in a “that’s interesting” kind of way – I like a girl who can whip out a bitchy comment for no reason. But RiRi’s recent bitchiness is tinged with a heavy dose of hypocrisy. A few weeks ago, Rihanna bitched about her BFF Katy Perry, and how Katy was “general pop.” The not-so-subtle insinuation being that Rihanna’s music is NOT “generic pop” but instead… like, the best music in the world, I guess? Anyway, in her Billboard interview (full piece here) Rihanna is taking Lady Gaga to task… over fashion trends.
Rihanna on people who dress like Lady Gaga: “A lot of people dress like Lady Gaga now. I’ve just stepped off into a whole new look and style. The whole shoulder pad thing, and the architectural look, is so sharp-edged and tough. I’m over that. I like floral prints now, which I never liked. Trends are boring,” she adds. “It’s boring to see everyone doing the same thing.”
On her last album, Rated R, and Chris Brown: “’Rated R’ showed that I wasn’t a shallow artist,” she says. “I have some depth. There was definitely some growth, going through that dark moment in my life.” Rihanna never refers to her relationship with Brown in specifics and says she “definitely” prefers to let “Love the Way You Lie” speak for itself, which of course is made easier by the fact that it’s not on her own album. “It’s kind of like the closing to that chapter, and now we’re in a new stage,” she says.

Rihanna really think she’s the most original girl out there, doesn’t she? Look, I like her and I will defend her about some things, but I can’t defend this side of her, the side that thinks she’s the best or most interesting or most unique artist out there. She’s got a crappy little voice and she f-cks with her hair ever couple of weeks and she goes out of her way to wear the strangest f-cking things. It’s not that Rihanna has weird, unconventional style – it’s that she has no idea what looks good, ever (or so it seems). She is very, very unchallenging.

Floral prints? How ground-breaking!
I mean, I’m not a fan of either Rihanna or Lady Gaga, and it’s kind of a relief to get a break from the “Lady Gaga is so amazingly creative and talented” train–but Rihanna would sound a lot less envious if she’d said something like, “She’s doing her thing, and I’m doing mine–more power to us both.”
You know, like a grown-up instead of like a child who is mad that someone else is getting the attention she wants.
She is so boring herself it’s ironic that she seems to think everyone else is.

The reality is that none of them are original or trailblazers. I am so sick of everyone kissing Gaga’s ass like she invented music and avant garde fashion. I’m not a Rihanna stan and I don’t think she can carry a tune in a bucket but her success speaks for itself. And as for her comment about generic pop songs, she’s absolutely correct. So many of the current hits sound just like the other and you can barely tell which singer is which. That being said, she will not be doing anything revolutionary but then again neither is anyone else on the radio. I sure hope we get back to a time when it really is about the music and not about costumes, or who can be more outrageous, or vicious stans who perpetuate discord especially amongst female artists (a term I use loosely).
I like Rihanna’s change of hairstyles. Not so much er dress choices (crappy for the most).
Anyway it’s true that now there are little Gaga everywhere, and it’s not like it a “beautiful” style. It’s just 80’s and Gaga’s and very strange. It can be tiring also, like “what the hell, you’re wearing that crap again?”. I’m like this whenever I see Gaga. Yeah she starts new trends and all, but she (or her stylist) puts up some really weird and horrible things.

On the MTV awards Rihanna said something to Perry and Perry turned her head and flipped her hair. The Rhanna flipped her hair …both acting like snooty sorority girls. Well really Perry looked like she was mad Gaga was knocking her out.
Gaga can stand there and sing. She is classically trained piano player. Katy just doesn’t have anything to offer. Rihanna needs to use her island roots to her advantage and go study Bob Marley. Use that island accent to your advantage and sing about real issues. Take some voice lessons. Disappear for awhile. She has Jay Z backing her so i can’t believe she has no creative control with her record label.

I’m sorry, but I remember hearing her say in another interview that she ” has songs written specifically for her” — Implying that she does not write her own music, and thus they probably don’t convey her as deeply as she thinks. With songs like “rude boy” I can’t really see how she shares a very deep ( if any ) aspect of herself.
As for “Love the way you lie”, honey, you only crooned out the chorus in that one, the rest was left up to someone who actually writes their own music, and he’s the one who told *his* story, your addition to that was pretty vague, despite your own run-in with domestic violence.
Ugh, maybe she dyed her hair red as a symbolic gesture to her now being on her perpetual rag.

Lady Gaga rips off everybody from Madonna to Grace Jones to Bette Middler to Debbie Harry to Elton John to Freddie Mercury to Gwen Stefani(who is imitating half of the other ones) to Andy Warhol. She’s conscious of it because she knows her cultural history, and she enjoys her homage to other artists so anybody who gets their knickers in a knot over somebody imitating Lady Gaga – the queen of imitation – knows nothing about music, history, or modern culture before 2007.
Rihanna does not have a powerful voice, but she has a unique and interesting voice that sounds great when it’s recorded. Lady Gaga actually has a stronger voice, but it isn’t as unique. However, she also sounds great when recorded. Rihanna is more diverse in that she merges R&B, hip hop, house, pop and electronica while Gaga only does “white music” – pop and electronica.
They are two different kinds of artists, and there’s room for both of them.
Rihanna wasn’t attacking gaga, she was attacking the style of people who tried imitate her.
