Tim Gunn bitches about Gretchen Jones’ Project Runway victory (video)

Below is a video that NY Magazine’s Vulture column & Dlisted just got their hands on – Tim Gunn discussing the past season of Project Runway, and last week’s big reveal that the winner was… the bitch everybody hated. The unprofessional, tacky, budget, nasty, two-faced wench known as Gretchen Jones. Go here for my thoughts on the finale – and here for a bitchy post-victory interview Gretchen did. In this video, Tim is addressing an audience gathered for an event for Kate Spade in Pennsylvania.

Tim crams a lot of bitching into a short monologue. He complains about Nina Garcia and Michael Kors’ blatant hypocrisy, gives a nudge to Jessica Simpson, and basically sounds as displeased as all of us that Gretchen won. Also – why did the PR producers edit Tim out of the judging? I would have loved to have seen Tim trying to reason with the Kors and Garcia beasts, and it would have made for interesting television. Here’s a little more:

*When the show’s judging panel was deadlocked, Klum asked Gunn what his opinion was. When she learned that he agreed with her that Mondo should win, she asked him to join her in appealing directly to Garcia and Kors in favor of crowning him the winner. Subsequently, Gunn reports, “I went with Heidi and we made quite a case for our candidate.”

*At the time, Klum was upset with Gunn about a quote of his, published in the L.A. Times, about “crack smoking judges” — a reference to how much he disagreed with many of the judging panel’s decisions this season. When the two agreed on the Mondo question, Gunn reports that Klum asked him, “Can you remove my crack-smoker badge?” Gunn responded, “Yes, because Nina and Michael are smoking enough for all of us!”

*Gunn wraps up by offering this final, “oh well” take on the judges’ decision: “Mondo will do fabulously anyway, and Gretchen really needs the money.”

[From Wordsmoker]

Sigh… I love Tim. He’s the Greek chorus of Project Runway – he stands in for the audience in real time, and Tim thinks you’re smoking crack, then you are totally a crackhead. If Tim thinks you are a crappy designer, you are one. Tim hath decreed it!

Now, my love for Tim not withstanding, I still don’t think I’m going to watch next season. I’m over this bitch, at long last. But Tim will be forever!

I love Tim Gunn he’s one of a kind!!!And Gretchen’s win was really disapponting…Mondo was the true winner!!!

  2. devilgirl says:

He is the only honest person, it would seem in show business these days. He says what he feels and isn’t worried about what repercussions his words take on. I love that about him. Honesty!

  3. Rita says:

I thought this whole thing took Tim off the top of his game. His style and polish is what gives him credibility as well as his talent for slicing someone into pieces without them realizing it until they find the toilet paper on their shoe.

  4. Babette777 says:

Tim Gunn, I love you! The finest moment this season was when he called out Gretchen for being such a biotchy bully w/her team. The second finest moment was when he called out Poison Ivy for her crap against Michael Costello. What a season! I’ll keep watching, but I hope next season is far better than this one. Hey, Nina may be out on maternity leave!!

  5. Bunny says:

I love Tim and his honesty. I still can not believe they picked Gretchen.

I think this show has officially jumped the shark. I will continue to watch because I like Tim so much and his interaction with the designers.

  6. TaylorB says:

I generally avoid too much cussing, but… Nina and Kors are fu**ing blind! The only place gWretchens stuff is considered ‘now’ is in some retirement village in Boca, mainly because if you pad up those tacky panties she threw out in her ‘collection’ (circa 1978) they are a bit more fashionable than regular Depends.

  7. LOVE ANGELINA says:

LOL Oh Tim. You lovable scamp. I am so happy for honesty. I seriously don’t know what Micheal and Nina were thinking. Love my Mondo. Gretchen did need the money, I agree with Tim on that, I felt bad for her but like Tim said Mondo will go far. He will. 😀

  8. NayNay says:

I love Tim Gunn. He is not afraid to speak his mind, and I applaud that. I think Nina and Michael need to lay off the crack!!! : – )

  9. Riley says:

I don’t really watch this show but I do love Tim Gunn. I hate Michael Kors though. He is such a douche bag.

  10. Kiska says:

    I love Tim Gunn!!!!

I will watch because he is on it. He makes me smile so I can put up the shenanigans.

  11. Maritza says:

I totally agree with Tim but I do believe they let Gretchen win because she was broke and homeless. I’ll keep watching Project Runway because I love that show.

  12. wunderkindt says:

Tim has honesty and good taste. . . and Yes, Tim shall be forever!

  13. GatsbyGal says:

“Gretchen really needs the money” – oh does Tim Gunn know how to give those backhanded compliments. <3 He’s my hero.

  14. Fire says:

Why would they ask Tim to help be the deciding factor and then not take his recommendation?? That sucks because GRETCHEN SUCKED! I will still watch next season but, like most, I am very upset about the conclusion of this season. Mondo will definitely go far regardless and Gretchen does need the money, but winning PR is not about who needs the money most!

  15. Trillion says:

Who could feel sorry for Gretchen when we all know Mondo’s background? And does Mondo respond with choruses of “poor me”? Hell no! He responds by bringing light, fun, fantasy, creativity and a crazy amazing work ethic. Here’s this little gay dude, growing up in a macho culture in one of the most homophobic states, who can’t even come out to his own father and was secretly living HIV+ for a decade. Yeah, I really feel sorry for Gretchen. Maybe her collection looked like homeless-wear so the judges would award her the money. Cuz I guess that’s their criteria now.

  16. layla says:

When did Nina and Michael Kors get the power of veto?! Are they both producers?

If the vote was 3-2 … then that’s the winner. Plain and simple.

  17. Cheyenne says:

No way I will watch that show next season or any other season. And I will not spend a wooden nickel for anything with Michael Kors’ name on it.

  18. heathen says:

Everytime I see Master Gunn I fall more in love & wish I were a gay man so I could seduce him.
And unlike others, I will be watching next season, as long as Tim Gunn is on.

  19. Goober says:

Michael Kors is a derivative designer.
He’s a fashion follower and not a real artist. 2nd rate at best. Pedestrian.
Nina Garcia is as much a fashion guru as Patsy Stone.
They have no consistent view themselves.
It’s totally obvious that Gretchen is generic and that Mondo is a true artist.

  20. Dixie says:

NOOOOOOOO!!! I haven’t had time to watch the finale yet. Ahhh I’m so mad its ruined. I guess it will still be fun to watch for the clothes but I’m a little pissed off at the spoiler in the headline.

  21. Farrah Knight says:

I totally agree with what everyone else has said thus far….Everyone knows Mondo was the true winner…I’d buy his clothes any day over that grandma wrinkles shit bitch made. The whore was a two faced asshole to everyone on the show…I seriously am thinking about not watching anymore….perhaps they need to replace Nina and Kors….they sucked cat balls majorly! Gunn rocks!

  22. Cheyenne says:

@Goober: if Michael Kors is a follower, I wonder who he’s following. I can’t imagine who in the world would wear those crap designs Gretchen put out, except maybe for the over-50 mall mavens. Hell, I’m over 50 and I wouldn’t wear them.

  23. dj says:

Tim Gunn is the reason to watch P.R. Unfortunately, the judges shanked his credibility this season IMO. He is the one that goes in and gives feedback to the designers and if he no longer understands what the judges are thinking how can he accurately do his job now? It seems like a Catch 22. Not watching anymore. Tim needs his own show.

  24. heathen says:

@Dixie — I’m sorry you got spoiled, but really — it has been 5 days since the finale — if you haven’t taken the time to watch it by now, I think you should expect to be spoiled.

  25. Deeta says:

Tim Gun just doesnt care about what people think about him. He is awesome! But I agree with others – this season Tim and the judges were completely un-sinch. They made some very strange decisions – and I can’t believe they gave Gretchen so many chances. Her style sucks!

  26. Darlene says:

I won’t be watching next season, but if Tim Gunn got a spin-off (cough-rip-off) of PR, I’d totally watch THAT.

I cannot believe Tim and Heidi can’t veto Nina and Michael.

  27. Chrissy says:

I love the GUNN!! Love him!

  28. Kiska says:

As long as Tim Gun is on PR, I will continue to watch. That is how much I love the guy.

  29. jill says:

    Tim Gunn for president!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. Gistine says:

I haven’t even watched the finale because I had heard that chicken-lipped sour puss won. I actually barfed and it looked like her whole collection.

Wait, it actually looked better than what she makes.

  31. tinkerton says:

Tim, seriously, get your own show and leave those hot tranny mess judges behind. You know that the bulk of fans are watching for you alone! Bring validity back to the show!

  32. mslewis says:

    I’m over this bitch . . .
    —————————————-
Me too, honey!! I don’t know who in the world would want to watch this thing anymore. But like Tim said, Mondo will be just fine because he has talent, style and vision.

  33. k says:

I’ve watched this program But after the 1st episode of this season, I stopped watching. And especially after the results of this season, won’t even watch ever again.

  34. Leah! says:

In the seconds before they announced the winner, I vowed that if Gretchen won I would not be watching anymore. I’ll have to just buy Gunn’s book if I want his snark, I guess.

Poor Mondo. He got ripped off.

  35. Az says:

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Tim Gunn deserves better. Give him a show that actually values his talent, class and wisdom. Preferably not on Lifetime. Try to throw Iman into the deal. Please and thank you.

  36. Nikita says:

Mondo will rise.. He doesnt need the money.. we all know in our hearts he was to be the winner.. but i bet he will conquer the world even though gretchen has the money now. In our culture we believe who runs first/quickly in a race doesn’t mean he or she will arrive first. (rough translation) loads of love from Dubai! I love you Mondo! Tim Gunn, always a breath of fresh air!

  37. The Hamm is My Dream Man says:

I heart Tim Gunn. He always tells it like it is and doesn’t shy away from expressing his opinion which more often than not is exactly what I was thinking only said in a much classier way :).

  38. BamaGuy says:

This is Tim Gunn’s hour to shine – now will some producer, some network GIVE TIM GUNN A SHOW OF HIS OWN!!!! I will not watch Project Runway’s next season unless some major change (like dumping Kors and Garcia) takes place.

  39. Grandizer says:

The show has lost me unless Tim Gunn is given more power on the show.
I am surprised to hear that he was written / edited off of the judging session. I actually thought that he would have made Mondo the winner.
In fact I think if he was there, they would have had an all male finale. I think that Michael designs were better then Gretchens by a long shot.
And Andy’s designs were better then Gretchens as well.
Maybe the producer’s wrote the winning card upside down and Heidi read it in reverse?

  40. big feet bunny says:

i think michael and nina are batshit crazy! i thought either andy or gretchen would be the ones not making it to show for fashion week. michael should have been a shoe in. gretchen’s clothes are dreadful and drab. then she goes and beats mondo who has been untouchable during the whole season and who rocked the runway! as soon as i saw gretchen won, i shut the tv off. this not project welfare. it’s project runway. maybe she is broke and needs money but mondo is more talented is a much better designer.

    meanwhile i love tim gunn!

  41. Amywho says:

I was sooo disapointed with the results. I can’t believe Michael and Nina overruled Heidi and Tim (and Jessica… beh)!! Is this not Heidi’s show?

Tim and Heidi need to do their own thing and capture the essence of what Project Runway used to be. Not the joke it has turned into.

  42. Re- Trillion says:

    Hey Trillion,

Mondo is from Denver, Colorado. THis is certainly not one of the most homophobic states. I’ve lived all over the United States and I find almost nothing homophobic or racist about the people in Colorado. In fact quite the opposite.

  43. Hasmik Jorgensen says:

He was right Nina and Michael smocked enough for all of us. It was a very unfair decision based on Michael’s pride. How did Mondo dare to not listen to his advice about the Polka dot dress. We all know Mondo is the winner the real and the deserving one. And that B*** Gretchen can take the money. That was all her soul was about anyways “money” and she got it. Mondo is worth way beyond it and he will receive it from all of us. We love Mondo

  44. Tammy says:

C’mon guys, the bitch needed the money. But what is she going to to when the money runs out? She’s tied to a contract and we don’t know what the company is doing to promote her. Her clothes suck and she will be starving again. Mondo, on the other hand, had the chance to showcase his amazing creativity, and is free to chose the best offer he gets, which we are sure he will receive lots of them. So I think at the end of the road he will do way much better that her. Period.

  45. Tammy says:

Ahh, maybe when her contract is over, Gretchen can sell her crap in Salvation Army LMAO…

I truly enjoy reading “A Little Death In Dixie” by Lisa Turner on the new Kindle. This newly remodeled e-reader is flatter, lighter, quicker, and makes studying simpler than with any past Kindle model. Weighing in at but 8.5 oz.s, the modern designed electronic e-reader is lighter than a paperback,softback,soft-cover book. It is but 1/3” thick and feels great in the hand. This brand-new model is the most flat Kindle so far.

  48. Annie says:

Mondo is the best. Honestly, Gretchen is a charity case. I think Garcia and Kors are a bit “dated”… just like Gretchen’s collection. Long live Mondo and his amazing talent!

  49. Irving W. says:
