First gay celebrity divorce is announced

Matt Lucas of television’s Little Britain and his long term partner television producer Kevin McGee are separating, making this the first gay celebrity divorce. We all knew this day would sadly come, but the good news is that this isn’t one of the unions that have taken place since the Californian legalization in July, but the ending of a 18-month-long marriage in the UK.

The couple, who shared a home in north-west London worth 1.5 million pounds, are the first gay celebrity couple to “divorce” since the civil partnership laws were introduced and their split could be seen as a test case.

Some have speculated that Lucas could end up paying his former partner millions of pounds following the break-up.

Lucas has employed the same high-profile law company – Mishcon de Reya – used by Heather Mills and Diana, Princess of Wales, in their divorce battles.

In a joint statement Lucas and his partner, Kevin McGee, said: “It is with sadness that Matt and Kevin announce that their relationship has come to an end. Their separation is amicable.”

New Zealand Herald

There is some speculation that the divorce settlement could differ from a traditional marriage, and we will have to see how the UK handles it when partners separate from a civil union.

Matt Lucas and Kevin McGee married in a fancy dress event in December 2006, attended by celebrities such as Elton John and Courtney Love. Matt was dressed as Aladdin while Kevin was dressed as Prince Charming.

If you haven’t heard of Matt Lucas and Little Britain, it’s a UK television show that shows characters such as a teenage mother and a disabled man living in the council flats of England. The show was briefly very popular, and is now going to be produced in the United States for HBO. I have no idea why American networks take foreign shows and remake them – is it because US audiences don’t share the same humor? Or is it because they have a hard time with the accents?

Matt Lucas and George McGee are shown on 2/16/08 in the header and 3/25/07 below, thanks to WENN.

I never heard of them, but that’s too bad.

Always makes me sad to hear of any couple breaking up.

There’s a little confusion regarding the names here: is it George or Kevin McGee in the end?

As for their divorce: it is always sad to see a couple break up and love come to an end although I feel it is a rather natural thing…
These two looked happy and nice together but even good things come to an end.
Here’s to hoping they won’t make it an ugly divorce battle!

Sorry, Helen, but if you’re going to report on a story, please at least make an effort to get the facts right. Little Britain was hugely successful. To reduce it to a show ‘that shows characters including a teenage mother and a disabled man living in the council flats in Britain’ is just lazy. Lucas and Walliams are two of the most talented performers around. Series 1 and 2 were brilliant, series 3 not so much and was rightly panned, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that it was brilliantly observed and created more cult characters than almost any other series in recent memory. An HBO remake doesn’t even bear thinking about. It’s Little Britain, not Little America. It won’t translate and is a really bad idea.

The split is sad. Matt’s a great guy, I hope they manage to separate amicably and privately.

They say this is why the American Bar Association was in favor of gay marriage….LOTS of divorce attorney business to be had when the 50% of gay marriages (if the trend is the same as among heterosexuals) split up.

  5. Megan says:

I agree with everything geronimo said.

  6. lola says:

Candykay, you don’t say! I knew all this gay rights movement had something to do with capitalism. LOL

Seriously, what made men think they can live together as man and…. man? Men are the most selfish bastards EVER! This is the beginning of more divorces. Didn’t Pete burns the transexual split from his ….husband..wife..man whatever? This is not the first gay divorce, unless the latter has not filed for a divorce.

For the tv show, I enjoy watching shows in their original format. It is why they are popular in the first place.

As far as the breakup goes, that sucks for them, but I don’t have anything emotionally invested in them. lol…If it gets nasty, it is just more ammo for those opposed to gay marriage, even though hetero people have some fucked up divorces. Paul and Heather, anyone? I’m more interested in the way it plays out in the media.

  8. Ron says:

I just feel terrible that Uncle Fester and Cousin It are breaking up.

  9. vdantev says:

Sad to here about this, who ever they are.

Good thing Lola isn’t bitter or resentful.

I’ve heard of the show, but I think for me it is the accents that I can’t get past because I can’t understand what anyone is saying to enjoy it. Not that I like remakes of anything; they always turn out to be terrible because they try to translate them to American audiences and that never works.

Countdown until the anti-gay-marriage crusaders start shrieking “I TOLD YOU SO, THEY DON’T DESERVE MARRIAGE, THEY’RE TOTALLY MAKING A MOCKERY OF IT” commencing in 5…4…3…2…

Never mind, of course, that a full half of heterosexual marriages end in divorce. That’s different. Because it just is.

    Geronimo… THANK YOU!

I own Little Britain Seasons 1 & 2, and even love Season 3, although, I haven’t found it in a US format on DVD.

So, uh, is this HBO thing still going to star Lucas and Walliams? If it IS, it has a chance, if it isn’t, there’s no way in hell. Tracey Ullman did very well on HBO, though, so if Matt and David wanna come over… I anxiously await their arrival!

I was actually Bubbles DeVere for Halloween last year, lol, no one here had any idea who I was, but it was fun!

  13. fjeiaojfea says:

what a weird looking gay couple. fat bald guy + skinny girly man… okkk…

  14. geronimo says:

    @Diva

Daahling!! Bubbles is one of my favs, along with Ting Tong!

Still think it’s a bad idea – it’s called Little Britain USA 🙄 Lucas & Walliams are involved on the writing front and the adaptation of characters but don’t know if they’ll actually be in it. I know Sacha Baron-Cohen is involved which is good but David Schwimmer is directing which is bad. Just have to wait and see.
