Prince William & Kate Middleton’s neverending engagement drama: over it?

usweekly

It seems the American media just won’t quit with the speculation about Prince William and Kate Middleton. Their “engagement” rumor has taken yet another tabloid cover this week – Us Weekly, the budget People (but Us has better weekly exclusives, for my money). Us hasn’t released their story yet (boo!), but I can guess the general storyline – after nearly nine long years of doing little else but being at a prince’s beck-and-call, Kate is finally so close to her life’s goal (wearing pretty clothes, jewelry and doing nothing) that she can taste it. Throw in some quotes from insider sources about how they’ll probably get married next year, and BAM! There’s your cover story. Did you miss the formula? Don’t worry, CoverAwards has a good compilation here of the dozens of American tabloid cover Kate and Will have already garnered. They are all the same, pretty much.

This whole thing was just discussed over at Jezebel, in a piece called Quit Trying To Make William & Kate Happen”. The point of the piece was that Americans are bored with the Kate and Will story because they are two insanely boring people. While I agree that they’re boring, I do think people are interested in them, and royalty in general. Plus, the whole “he’s made her wait nine years for it” aspect of the story is compelling, and people have strong feelings about it. Add to that my theory/opinion that Kate is not a role model, but is in fact a lazy do-nothing who should have spent this time – at the very least – building a portfolio of charity work, and it becomes a tabloid story with everyone arguing over their relationship.

One last thing – Vanity Fair has an epic story about Kate and Will online, and it is excessively boring. I was going to excerpt some of it, but there’s nothing interesting or noteworthy. Just like Kate.

Who cares the wedding? Prince needs a wig. William, call to Elton for god sake.

  2. gabs says:

    yawn. Whats Harry up to?

  3. LOVE ANGELINA says:

LOL OMG that line about US Weekly having exclusives was pretty funny. If exclusives in media terms now means “go type some semi true or more likely no where near true sh*t up”, then Us Weekly has way better exclusives.

Sorry. Uhhh I am sure this kinda thing means more to the Brits than to us even though we still love Princess Di and her wedding. I hate to say this but William isn’t even the attractive one. Also Kate hasn’t captured our hearts, she doesn’t seem to show much personality. Not that they should do anything to impress others but seriously they aren’t really media darlings here.

  4. hairball says:

They’ve been dating for NINE years?? Time to move on. I would be insulted and just have moved on.

Who wants to be part of royal family anyway? That has been shown to be mainly a curse.

A long time ago I was thinking what a gorgeous guy William was turning out to be. He’s only 28..and looks like that? Very surprising. He could get some subtle hair transplants or wig (they look SO realistic now) but he’s in such the public eye – he can never escape it. Feel very bad for him in a way.

  5. Diane says:

Yawn, get married already or go away.

  6. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

@GABS.. I agree, bring out more Prince Harry…

Edit: I’m bored with her and I dont know her.. I’m sure he is too!

  7. December says:

She’ll never leave him, unless he dumps her, because that’s all she has. She’s has no marketable skill, she has no career, she does absolutely nothing but be at Prince William’s beck and call.

From the pictures, William looks bored with her, just my opinion. I don’t think even his family really wants him to marry Kate.

  8. Anon73 says:

Kaiser — spot on — OVER IT. And nothing noteworthy about Middleton. I like how you point out how lame it is she has not spent these past few years developing either a career or some charity portfolio. She really is a “professional girlfriend”. As you said in another post, a very poor example to other young women out there.

  9. BReed says:

They are an attractive couple who will do things in their own way, on their own time-line. I was a fan of his Mother, the late Princess. I got up in the wee hours of the morning to tune into her wedding to Prince Charles and enjoyed every moment of the pageantry
However, as Americans, we need to remember, we fought a war to get the money sucking British monarchy off our backs and out of our pockets…and “we won.”

  10. aenflex says:

    could. care. less.

  11. irishserra says:

I think it’s funny that the last ten items to show up on the Internet about Kate and William’s hypothetical engagement are all based on the same set of pictures; just varied close-ups. It’s as though literally nothing has been seen of them since this particular event pictured, yet the fervor continues to climb! LOL! Talk about grasping!

  12. Ella says:

Joining the “more Harry please” chorus.

  13. jc126 says:

No interest in the “royal” inbred welfare family, but damn, look at his profile – I always thought he was a clone of his mom, but you can also see Charles’ features in him to a degree. And I don’t think it’s just because he’s balding, poor kid, it’s the expression and something else, like the tilt of his eyes from the side or something. And possibly the jaw and lips.

  14. Green Is Good says:

What does Kate actually do, other than wait for a fat engagement ring?

Countdown to Wills hooking up with a stripper…

  15. TG says:

I like the Vanity Fair piece because it showed that she truly is “Waity Katy”. He has dumped her so many times so he can go galavanting with rich heiresses and she is always there to take him back. What a loser she is. Most men and women for that matter aren’t ready to settle down with the safe one they meet in college. If you are Will and you have all these options why wouldn’t you go exploring? Kate is boring boring. Why has she not found a better man during all these breaks from him? He can’t be that wonderful. It goes to show it is just because he is the Prince otherwise she wouldn’t bother with him.

  16. tango says:

I think Kate and William are bored to death of each other. But they’ve been togather so long and it’s been discussed/decided they will marry sometimes in the future but William is dragging his feet. He keeps hoping Kate will come to her senses and break it off or run off with a rugby player or ANYTHING that gets him out of the marriage. But Kates not going anywhere since this is the best she’s going to get since she’s ignored her education, life and career basically being a bride in waiting.
I think William might just marry her but it will be because it’s easy and expected. Not because he really wants to. Otherwise, he would’ve done it by now.

  17. Roxanne75 says:

I think he is handsome….i don’t get what he sees in her tho…she seems kind of plain, altho you never know what happens behind closed doors.

  18. Tia C says:

I’m not going to pretend to know anything about her, because I don’t, but judging purely from appearances – she just doesn’t look like “royal” material. No doubt William could find a more suitable choice for his wife.

  19. bros says:

TG I read the vanity fair piece and thought the author was pretty sympathetic to Kate. I dont think she is a loser. they havent broken up ‘so many times.’ anyone who meets in college and has been together for 8 years and who is high profile like that is a recipe for a little bit of a rocky relationship. she hasnt done anything wrong besides stayed loyal and given him space when he needed it and given him a couple ultimatums about his commitment to their relationship. she doesnt seem stupid or pathetic, just committed to their relationship.

  20. Alexa says:

Whoa-HARSH comments! I think Kate Middleton seems perfectly likeable – though I know very little about her. But I didn’t know ANYTHING about Princess Diana before she became engaged to Prince Charles. And what’s with the picking on William because of his thinning hair? You sound like a bunch of hillbillies or Jersey Shore-ites. (And Kate Middleton looks like ROYALTY to me! She’s one of the prettiest – if not THE PRETTIEST – royal girlfriends/wives I’ve ever seen.)

  21. Kev says:

Why do you even care about these inbred mutants?

  22. Obvious says:

Kaiser may I make a request? Every post about Kate and William must now come with a requisite photo of Harry-because hell, it prince freaking harry. *drool*

  23. TG says:

@Alexa – I don’t think she is ugly, but the point is she let’s him dump her to get with other girls and she keeps taking him back. She needs to respect herself instead of thinking he is some prize. I just get a sense that she doesn’t value herself outside of being his girlfriend/wife. No guy is that fabulous that he is worth making you look like a fool.

  24. JulieM says:

Another boring wedding preview for the most boring couple in the world. Will anyone tune in? I can remember getting up at 2AM to watch Charles and Diana’s wedding; I was in San Francisco. I may watch this one on the evening news recap. I can not think of two more uninspiring people. They deserve each other. Over it, you bet.

  25. Crash2GO2 says:

@bros: Good comments. I think Kate is pretty. But yes, they are fairly boring – almost as boring as Brangelina IMO. And they will be even more boring when they get married! But seriously, I wish them all the best. They seem well suited to each other.

  26. Chrissy says:

@bros – I agree. I read the VF article and thought it was pretty interesting. I think Kate seems perfect for him. She has kept out of the spotlight, refused to speak to the press, and keeps her mouth shut about their relationship. How many women can William find that are capable of that for NINE LONG YEARS??? As for not working … yeah, that is a fair criticism. According to that VF article, when she tried to participate in some crew-type thing, the press attention got to be so much that she had to withdraw. I imagine there would be lots of situations where that could happen; where press scrutiny could harm her ability to work, etc. Although with charity work, perhaps attention to the cause would be a good thing?? Who knows … but I think the fact that she seems to want to stay out of the press is a good sign that perhaps she is right for William.

  27. TG says:

From what I understood of in the VF article regarding the charity crew race she was training for was once Will came back to her after yet another break she dropped the crew practice to be with will again. It was written in a way to show the paps were also harrassing her but if you read it again it also mentions Will came back into her life so it was time for her to drop her own life again and take up with him.

  28. erin says:

she’s boring, but she has killer legs

  29. Henriette says:

I don’t dislike Kate but I do think Will’s too young to marry a girl he’s been in a relationship with for 8 years. They’re not “normal people.” He’ll have thousands of women throwing themselves at him for the rest of his life – no matter how much hair he loses – because of his status. I wish he’d go out and date for a few years and not settle down ’til his late 30s. I truly believe that then he’d have a better chance of picking a woman who he could be faithful to for the rest of his life.

  30. santacruz says:

How sad when a society’s interest is tweaked mainly by kardashians, hiltons, lowans and those that flash their vayjays whilst getting out of limousines. Makes one wonder what the future holds for today’s children.

  31. mystified says:

I’m with Erin. Kate’s got a pretty, if unexciting face, but not since Marlene Deitrich have I seen such great legs.

  32. Stronzilla says:

Hahahahaha, nine years of being at Prince William’s beck and call. All hail her royal highness Princess Beckandcallgirl.

  33. muningning says:

Funny how people would say this is a boring couple or they are not at all interested but why are u taking your prescious times to make comment.it just so happened that they are on the limelight, if these two were just ordinary people, i bet u wont even take a second look.

  34. Sally says:

Why all the hype? It is quite boring and judging by previous weddings doesn’t bode well for the future. Should play it down it I were them
