Scarlett Johansson is GQ’s “Babe of the Year”: did she deserve it?

cv02_noupcmed

Scarlett Johansson has been named GQ’s “Babe of the Year” – it’s like GQ’s version of saying that she’s the woman of the year, which is a lot better than their old system of recognizing the odd woman as “Woman of the Year” or “Obsession of the Year” on their traditionally “Man of the Year” November or December issue. I remember Jennifer Aniston getting the WOTY title, and there being some confusion because it seemed like GQ was naming her “Man of the Year”. So, in that frame of reference, referring to a girl as “Babe” seems nicer, I suppose, as opposed to a “Seriously, is this chick a hermaphrodite?” way. Eh. The full slideshow is here, at GQ. Here’s GQ’s summary of why they love her so much:

At 26, she remains fresh-faced, curious, trying on new moods and outlets of expression as easily as she changes her hair color. This is what we love about Scarlett: that she’s game, that she’s good, that she can try on all these guises without seeming to try too hard. And all the while still seem genuinely like the observant, inquisitive (and very cute) girl in transition we fell for in Lost in Translation.

[From GQ]

I guess ScarJo is getting recognized because of Iron Man 2, in which her part was overly hyped and really boring, and because she won a Tony for appealing on Broadway, maybe. And because she’s got big boobs and blonde hair.

By the way, I don’t mean to be nasty to GQ, who were so nice to send us these pretty hi-res images of ScarJo’s photo shoot, but the Photoshopping on ScarJo’s face is tragic. She’s a pretty girl, albeit a crappy model who only seems to know how to open her mouth and stare vacantly. But she’s pretty – there’s no reason to ‘Shop her face until she looks like… who is it? A fem-bot Brigitte Bardot?

    Come on…she’s a beautiful woman.

  2. Rachel says:

I thought it was Linday Lohan.

  3. carrie says:

she looks alike Amber Heard here

  4. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Yes Scarlett Johansson deserves this. I just like looking at her. She is just to cute for words. I didn’t really enjoy on her on SNL though, she is usually good but not this time around.

Scarlett is smart and talented, better than some C-list actress or one of those Glee kids.

  5. Ms_Fu says:

Sure, her face looks slimmer than usual (to me), but I think she still looks like Scarlett Johansson. And these pictures are gorgeous.

  6. Madan says:

    Yes. She really deserves it.

  7. anti says:

these photos are styled as if she can’t stand on her own…

  8. guesty says:

she looks good but uncomfortable as hell in these shots…

  9. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

    NO!

  10. ViktoryGin says:

Well, the title does say “Babe of the Year.” It’s not as if they’re awarding her for something of substance.

I actually like Scarlett Johansson, but damnit if she’s not one of the most over-hyped, miscast young Hollywood actresses working today. It seems that after Lost in Translation, she was the go-to actress for any role that needed a young recognizable face with a modicum of talent. And I do emphasize modicum. She doesn’t have the gait or the range for half of the roles in which she’s cast, especially if the role involves her doing more than shifting platinum blonde weave and shoving her tits her costars’ faces.

Anyway, her face shot from that angle on the cover is not particularly flattering.

  11. Ka says:

So much photoshopping that her ankle disappeared in the second picture.

  12. B says:

No, I think she’s a dreadful actress. She bores me to to death with her overly-manufactured sex appeal, and that’s really all she knows how to do. She only knows how to stand there with her mouth hanging partly open, staring vacantly. Her acting is so wooden and I’m always appalled and shocked when I hear praise for her acting. I can barely stand listening to her voice either. It’s so monotonous and ‘whisper-y.’ It just drives me nuts.

She’s pretty, but honestly if we’re going to talk about looks, there are far prettier celebrities and even actresses.

  13. lasherola says:

    God, how boring. ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz

  14. Stubbylove says:

Well, she can bend sideways that’s for sure.

  15. wonderwoman21 says:

Eh don’t think she’s too hot but whatever, to each their own. However, her nose is ALWAYS photoshopped into this perfect pointy little doll nose when in fact that is not what it looks like. Its much more bulbous, rounded, wider, and in my opinion, slightly askew. I just hate the way she’s always changed to look like some perfected version of herself and portrayed as a modern Marilyn Monroe. Don’t believe me? Check out her Dolce & Gabanna ads where she is apply lipstick versus a candid shot.

  16. Squirrel says:

Well if she stays out of films for a while and all the damage she does is looking hot and constipated on blanket covered furniture, then by all means keep her in the man-fantasy corner and make her whatever of whichever year.

  17. Tess says:

Did she earn the GQ Babe of the Year title? Based on the photos, hell yes.

Just have to add, tho, my sadness that after decades of feminist rhetoric, a hallmark of the changes wrought is the overwhelming cultural trend to see women (and increasingly young girls) in sexual terms, alternatively sexually predatory or sexually compliant.

  18. Kbomb says:

She has a wicked body. Saw her on SNL on the weekend and she looked amazing (although I don’t like her new haircut). Then again if I got to slip into the sack with Ryan Reynolds every night, I’d want to look slammin’ too.

  19. Just a Poster says:

She kinda looks like Kate Moss in these pictures.

  20. Ferguson. says:

She deserves it, because she’s hot and beautiful… it’s not like u have to be a great actress to be named “babe of the year”. so yes, she deserves it.

ITA, too much photoshop for such a pretty face, she doesnt even look like herself.

  21. Sakyiwaa says:

i like her but…hmm. cant’ come up with enough reasons why she should be Babe of the Year…okay, it’s good. i’ll go with her. she is actually beautiful!

  22. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

    @Stubbylove… LOL!!!

  23. Kaiser says:

VictoryGin – Cosign for the most part, although I did think she was solid-to-good in Match Point. That was probably her best performance, the one time where she actually “acted”.

  24. Megan says:

no, cuz that bitch stole my man!

  25. Roxanne75 says:

anyone can be babe of the year with photoshop!

  26. Musicgal says:

Wow – that’s a lot of photoshopping. Her foot and ankle look really weird. If I had that much photoshop done I could be “Babe of the Year”

  27. Mingy says:

I agree B, her voice is really annoying. SNL was awful…no bueno at all

  28. Larissa says:

Omg people, the rest of her ankle is behind the fabric/sheets/whatever!
Those comments really made me laugh hard!

Now, Scarlett, she´s a babe, but I just want her hair, who did it? lol

  29. DetRiotgirl says:

That twisty pose is so awkward! I like the other, non-contortionist, shot though.

  30. jenny says:

I’m afraid to say it but she’s stepped up her hot game. Did anyone see her this past weekend on SNL? She got hotter! She gets my vote.

  31. Vera says:

The cover shot is the best. The second…meh. But the third doesn’t even look like her. Or perhaps that’s what she looks like when she isn’t trying to catch flies with her mouth?

  32. spinner says:

So strange looking at these pics…people tell me all the time that I look like her. I can’t see it… but she does look really, really good in these shots.

  33. lrm says:

i loved her in lost in translation-she played mousy and pretty well; c’mon-she looked sexy and hot, while wearing dowdy clothes and yale-eque big men’s shirts and jeans. and she held her own with bill murray-who admittedly held the screen for everyone….
and, she was good, I agree, in Matchpoint with JRM…good film, he was great, she was good….

I hear she was good in girl with a pearl-but everything else i’ve seen her in has been lame at best.

i like her-thought in the beginning she had more range. maybe she does, adn she just started phoning it in when she could do the sexpot thing instead?

i havent seen vicky christina barcelona. how was she in that?

  34. Beca says:

she’s pretty enough, i guess, but i just canNOT stand to watch her try to “act”. she’s boring and wooden and while she has a nice face and body, that is not enough to be worth the hype she seems to have been getting for years. ugh!

  35. LolaBella says:

    She’s beautiful and very bendy.

    Her new lips are insane.

Somewhere Jessica Biel is crying and firing her PR guy while screaming ‘I should have been the GQ Babe of The Year!’ as JT nods in the corner while reading the script that he’s convinced will be his Oscar vehicle.

  36. Marie says:

@Rachel..That is exactly who I thought is was as well. I think all Hollywood women look alike anymore. There is no individuality they all look the same.

  37. padiddle says:

They made her look exactly like a blonde version of megan fox (shot where she is in green tank top)
That said I think she is gorgeous with her own face, and certainly worthy of being called a “babe”
Miss her curvier days though, just think she looked better back then.

  38. normades says:

@ViktoryGin: Tots. She was particularly bad in the Black Dahlia and The Other Boleyn. I was really surprised that the NY Times gave her a great review for her Broadway turn.
That said, I do like her…she’s just not the strongest actress

  39. hmm says:

Lookwise, I think she’s incredibly overrated. Have you ever seen candids of her? She looks dumpy and dowdy. It’s like the big chest wipes out everything else. Acting wise? Nothing sticks out as memorable, unless you count her interviews where she’s trying to portray herself as serious and deep.

Whoever said anyone can be babe of the year with Photoshop pretty much hit the nail on the head.

  40. Ligeia says:

wow some really strong “myspace angles” on that cover shot. i don’t know why they did everything to make her look like someone else.

  41. devilgirl says:

I really liked her in Match Point. I also liked her in the Pearl earring movie.

  42. jamie says:

she’s hot but a crappy singer and a horrible actress

  43. kimberly says:

well if it’s based on looks ya she’s cute. NOT SEXY at all but bangable.

based on talent . . . HELL NO!

  44. Kim says:

She looks very pretty in these photos but doesnt always look this good. She is more average looking than gorgeous i think.

  45. Camille says:

No, she doesn’t. She is so over-hyped its ridiculous.

And that cover is terrible! It is an example of very bad photoshopping. In fact all of those pictures are bad. ScarJo couldn’t model if her life depended on it.

  46. Tess says:

    @ Irm

I think Scarlett’s performance in Vicky Christina Barcelona is comparable to Winoma Ryder’s in Girl, Interrupted. Not bad, but underwhelming in relation to the over-the-top scenery-chewing efforts of Penelope Cruz and Angelina.

  47. Lylo says:

I think she’s a pretty girl w/above average talent. She’s been in a number of good movies like that Pearl earring movie, Lost in Translation, Match point, and Vicky Christina Barcelona. She picks projects well, I will give her that. But she should step up her game as an actress. She’s NOT as good as she thinks she is.

  48. Chicoulina says:

This is the best color of hair on her.I think her makeup in the photos is amazing,it suits her well.I don’t like the photoshoot and the backround. It’s distracting and very simple.Very bad work.Other than that she’s gorgeous and looks very beautiful in these pics.

  49. kai says:

Her bad acting p-ssed me off in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. As others have said already, she is very good at standing in the corner, looking pretty with her mouth open, but the acting… oh my. wet noodle. especially painful compared to her co-stars. (But I found the whole film dumb/annoying/overrated)

  50. munchies says:

she was great in Bolyn girl,MP and LIT. i love love her because ses not the type youll see everywhere. very quiet about her private life. shes soo pretty with gorgeous curves. she damn well deserve the title. and who would you like to be babe of the year?shes a modest and clean choice.

  51. mystified says:

I’m sorry but I just can’t get past her amazingly low forehead, or should I say threehead? It makes it hard for me to see her face as beautiful.

She has a great figure though, I’m glad that she’s not on the too thin band wagon. It makes her unique.

  52. Bella Mosley says:

I’m more amazed at the questions we are ask? They seem to want to start a fight and they do. People turn vicious.

Does Scarlett deserve this from GQ? Last I looked that was up to GQ not us.

This is like the people who are still trying to decide if Brad Pitt should be with Jennifer or with Angie. Again, not our decision.

Team Jacob or Team Edward? Heck, pick whichever team you want – the book has been written and the ending is as it is.

Rihanna’s hair color isn’t my favorite but I hope she doesn’t care one bit what I think and if it makes her feel good that’s all that matters.

I admit I fell into the trap of: if you don’t love it then make mean, cruel remarks. That’s crazy and is bullying.

I realized it had turned to bullying when I read what some had written about Miley’s little sister, heck about Miley herself – about their looks. One isn’t even a teenager and they other is, yet grown people were being mean, downright vicious while hiding behind their computer screen.

  53. MissVJJ says:

Holy hell she’s flippin gorgeous!!!! I think Im in love <3

  54. animac says:

    hell yeah!

  55. whatuseeiswhatuget says:

Totally deserves the title…she’ll always be my girl crush forever & ever!
The angle is horrible and the heavy photoshopping is really unnecessary. We all know how gorgeous she is!

  56. cc says:

I think it’s really heartening to see Scarlett get the title because she seems more of a genuine beauty unlike most of the other plastic, anorexic celebrities in hollywood. She is slender with curves in all the right places and does smouldering/sensual without being trashy.
