James Franco & Anne Hathaway are probably this year’s Oscar hosts

This is interesting… instead of going with an old hand or some known comedian, the Oscar hosts for the 2011 awards show are reportedly… Anne Hathaway and James Franco. That’s FRANCO – because I first read it as “Jake Gyllenhaal”. Anyway, this is nailed down, but it does come from Nikki Finke, she of the best Hollywood scoops. I suppose it would be a bold decision… after all, Franco is likely to get an Oscar nomination for 127 Hours, and I can’t even remember the last time the Academy had a host who was also nominated in the same year. As for Anne… well… er… sure.

I’ve just learned that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has asked James Franco and Anne Hathaway to host the 83rd annual Academy Awards on February 27th, and it “looks like” both young stars have accepted the offer.

There is always the chance that one or both of them might back out because of prior commitments and other concerns. But my sources say the host announcement could be made as soon as this week. Both are starring in Fox movies out in theaters now: Franco in Fox Searchlight’s 127 Hours, and Hathaway in 20th Century Fox’s Love And Other Drugs.

The star of Princess Diaries and The Devil Wears Prada, Hathaway did a major dance and musical number with then host Hugh Jackman at the Academy Awards two years ago. Franco is also a multitalented actor who has taken risks in everything from the Spider-Man movie franchise to ABC’s General Hospital. Both are equally adept at comedy and drama. Their selection, if it pans out, is an inspired choice and demonstrates how much current Academy president Tom Sherak wants to improve Oscar ratings.

What’s most unusual about their hosting is that both thesps may be Oscar nominees themselves in the fiercely competitive Best Actor and Actress categories this awards season. Franco is considered a shoo-in for a nomination director Danny Boyle’s thriller 127 Hours, the real life story of a trapped hiker who must choose between his arm and freedom. And Hathaway is more of a long-shot in director Ed Zwick’s romantic dramedy Love And Other Drugs which opened soft at the box office this past weekend. That might be the main reason one or both of the stars decide to beg off. A decision like this to host the Academy Awards is made by committee with a star’s agent, publicist, manager and even studio weighing all the pro and con options. Which is why the Academy has such a tough time finding good people every year to host because it can be such a career-altering decision. And even more so when the stars are this young.

[From Deadline]

Anne seems like the safe pick that Middle America will like (she was in those princess movies!), and Franco is the artsy “New York liberal” pick – he was on 30 Rock (hilarious) and he’s published a book of crappy short stories and he does photo shoots in drag and he’s an intense artist and everything. Here’s the kicker though – I actually think James Franco would be really, really good and just naturally funny and charming as a host, while Anne will probably come across like she’s trying too hard. Just my opinion.

    her dress has horns!

    Horny dress 😀

  3. devilgirl says:

    HUH??? That should be boring.

  4. guesty says:

    snoozefest.

  5. heatheradair says:

1 – Feel like this won’t do the awards broadcast any favors in the “radically declining viewership” category. Though the hosts are more or less just there to make an awkwardly scripted joke while they hustle the next set of presenters on stage so maybe it doesn’t matter WHO they stick behind the mic.

2 – sorta love the horned dress. a lot.

  6. mln says:

James Franco will do anything I mean he is in Oscar running the same year that he starred on General Hospital and he’s been in a half dozen stoner movies. I think he’ll be hilarious.
Hathaway is actually charming despite the fact that she is really annoying so I think it’s an interesting choice.

  7. carrie says:

    what awful dress!

  8. brin says:

Poor Justin Timberlake, he was probably campaigning for that gig too.

  9. Atticus says:

From what I’ve seen of Anne in awards shows and SNL, I think she’d do a great job with this. She’s got great comedic timing in live settings.

  10. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Stupid Idea. Booooo!!!! No. Have a comedian host. Let Chris Rock do it again or John Stewart or the best person for the job, Billy Crystal. But not these two. They are to young and plus they aren’t like funny funny, they can be funny but they don’t specialize in funny.

  11. Marjalane says:

Surely somebody else could have done this! What about Seth Myers? He was hilarious on the ESPY’s. Looks like a good year to watch the red carpet and then read about the winners the next day.

  12. Cassi says:

Stewart or Crystal would be good. I am looking forward to seeing what Anne and James do with it.

  13. The_Porscha says:

I would love that dress if it didn’t have all that crap over it. What are those, plastic flowers?! In any case… what a horrible wardrobe choice.

  14. k says:

I had no opinion of Hathaway until I saw her in a number of TV interviews. Now I can’t stand her. Just a little too smug or snarky or something.

  15. original kate says:

i want to like her, but i can’t. the weird thing is she looks alot like a good friend of mine, but even that happy association doesn’t help.

  16. jc126 says:

Every time I see Anne Hathaway, I wish I could punch her in the face.
Keep her suckitude away from the awesomeness that is James Franco, please!

  17. terryo says:

Anne’s “princess movies” were a long time ago! Her body is at its peak, her boobs are incredible and hope she keeps on showing them!!

  18. Rachel says:

I saw Love & Other Drugs on Saturday and I can’t believe anyone would even consider her a “long shot” for an Oscar. Whaaaat?! It was an okay movie for what it was. Someone’s just saying Oscar because she plays a young woman with Parkinsons and it didn’t even really focus on her struggle with Parkinsons! It was more a rom-com with a dramatic twist.

  19. The Hamm is My Dream Man says:

No please no. Just get a comedian or another song-and-dance man or woman like Hugh Jackman or Whoopi Goldberg.

Just please, no “serious” actors. The Oscars is a bunch of silliness anyway. We need someone there to acknowledge just how stupid they really are-an outsider.

  20. Jeri says:

The dance and musical number she did with Hugh Jackman was very good. I was surprised how well she sang and danced.

  21. Carrie says:

I’d prefer Neil Patrick Harris…or Jimmy Kimmel (think about it…)

Anne Hathaway is generally excellent on SNL- she has good comedic timing, is a good singer, and seems up for pretty much anything. However, and this is really a big HOWEVER, she tries way too hard some times- like, makes me squirm uncomfortably with how hard she tries. Her sign off on the latest SNL was embarrassing.

James Franco is chill enough to maybe counterbalance it?

  22. chris says:

I don’t think they’re good enough for this but we’ll see.

  23. Louise says:

I can’t imagine them being entertaining.

  24. Catherine says:

Now that selection would be totally random.

  25. mimi says:

Why didn’t they pick NPH?! I thought he was a shoo-in for this, especially considering how GREAT he was when he hosted the Tony’s!!! I like Franco but since he’s gonna be nominated I don’t want to see him until it’s time for his name to called and while I like Anne most of the time I don’t want to see her host….FAIL

  26. Really says:

I saw Love and Other Drugs and I loved it! I am a huge fan of her’s, and seeing Rachel Getting Married only solitified that. I was thinking Oscar for her portrayal in love/drugs, mostly because her and Jake had amazing chemistry (seriously why is he w swifty?) and she made me believe she has Parkinsons. Glad to here this news and please post some better photos -those dresses suck.

  27. LILY says:

Kind of random, but I was hoping to see stephen colbert or another comedian host the oscars.

Franco should be a good host though…as for Anne, I think she’s a good dramatic actress but for some reason I never find her that believable in her comedic roles, so I highly doubt that the scripted oscar jokes will be any better.

No matter who hosts though I probably won’t watch this year. The oscars has been sucking majorly these past few years and I doubt its going to get any better. I’ll checkout red carpet, mock some terrifying dresses, than call it a night.

  28. sauvage says:

    I can’t get over the moustache…

  29. Dizzybenny says:

    it’s going to suck balls!!

  30. Nicky says:

I haven’t seen Anne in anything other than her movies but I love James Franco and think he’ll add something different to what is usually an overlong, predictable awards ceremony.

  31. normades says:

He’s gonna be nominated so it seems like a conflict of interest

  32. Stubbylove says:

Who the hell cares who hosts the Oscars? You see them, what?…for the opening and then about 3-5 minutes during the show? I’d love to see some old school actors like crazy Jack Nicholson & Diane Keaton host it – at least they would bring some edge as they don’t give a f*ck anymore cuz they’ve done it all & have the resume to back it up – now that would be entertaining!

  33. Anj says:

Anne rocks…..but Franco just is plain irritating………couldnt they have got anyone like jake g instead?
