‘The Tourist’ review: A silly, sweet hot mess

wenn3131664

Okay, so this is just my review of The Tourist – if you want to read the bad reviews, and there are totally SO MANY bad reviews, go here to Rotten Tomatoes, where The Tourist is holding at 20%. From the looks of the reviews, you’d think that Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie had made Ishtar 2: Kingdom of the Crystal Dong. But I went to see The Tourist last night, and I have a confession: it really wasn’t that bad. In fact, I rather enjoyed it.

Is it because I’m a Brangeloonie? Sure. I’m positive that my card-carrying membership to Empress Zahara’s Queendom had something to do with my general warmth towards the film. But if something sucks hard, I hope you have enough faith in me to call it as I see it. Here’s an example: when I saw Salt earlier this year, it disappointed me. I thought it was a waste of many talented people, I thought the script issues were atrocious, and I thought the plot holes were ridiculous. I don’t really want to see Salt again – but I would watch The Tourist again tomorrow.

So why the bad reviews? I think it’s because there is a problem with “tone”. The film isn’t some serious movie, and it’s totally not the best work any of the actors or the director has ever done or will ever do. It was like the film didn’t know whether it was a quirky little Hitchcock Lite suspense/dramedy or whether it should just be full-on action/drama.

And yes, there were other problems too: the music was sketchy, and detracted from several key scenes. Angelina’s hair was a rat’s nest for the last half of film, and it was totally distracting. Also, her costumes: she can wear the hell out of a suit or a slim-cut dress, but the evening clothes were tragic. For a major part of the film, she’s wearing a ghastly Gone With the Wind ball gown – in another part, she’s wearing a lumpy satin dress that makes her abdomen look like a tree trunk. Poor girl has never had much of a defined waist, and this dress was the wrong choice for her body type. As for Depp – his come-and-go facial hair was distracting. As was Jolie’s come-and-go accent.

What was good? Depp and Jolie gave understated, solid performances. Once again, not the best work from either of them, but they weren’t bad either. They didn’t have a lot of sexual chemistry, but their little love story was sweet, and the two characters seemed to affectionately like each other, rather than be all hot and bothered for each other. There were no sex scenes – there didn’t need to be. This was Depp as his most “normal” – no garish costumes or makeup to hide behind. It was nice. Refreshing, even. It was also refreshing to see Jolie play a character where her default position isn’t on “kick his ass”. Her character gets out of situations realistically, like a smaller woman without a death wish would, rather than some strident action heroine, bustin’ a cap in every bitch trying to mess with her. I also liked that she was playing “beautiful” – every man who comes into contact with her stops to check her out. Angelina doesn’t play that part very often.

My favorite part of the film? Paul Bettany. He was AMAZING. If you feel like seeing a fun, silly little movie and you’re trying to decide, let Paul Bettany’s scene-stealing performance be the deciding factor. Every scene with him popped. He was funny, he was sexy, he was dashing, and he was a total wisecracking, know-it-all a–hole. He was the perfect foil, the perfect character actor, the perfect sidekick.

There was also some decent character work done by the underutilized Timothy Dalton and Rufus Sewell, and a cameo by Raoul Bova. The “villain” was played by long-time character actor Steven Berkoff, who, if you’re in anything like me, is known solely for his role as Victor Maitland in Beverly Hills Cop. Of course, I’ve seen Beverly Hills Cop about a million times, so during all of Berkoff’s scenes, I was flashing back to his dialogue with Eddie Murphy.

All in all, I’d give the film a B-minus. If you want to see something silly, sweet and a bit cheesy, and Paul Bettany looking fine in a suit, you should see this.

i’ve only just realized that white dress is mohair/polar-fleece/some damn thing that feels like going out in your bathrobe. i bet angie tore that thing out of the stylist’s hands and refused to give it back. i think angie’s limits for red carpet are ‘sequins = no hair do; i get to wear my bathrobe = hair do, and i’ll even keep the kids from improving it before i leave the house.’

  2. merry says:

Paul bettany is genius, I love him almost as much as Jhonny; but the movie IS bad.

  3. Shay says:

I don’t know why they remake European films. American versions are almost always terrible rip offs.

  4. Stephy2585 says:

    ???
    Doesn’t she MOSTLY play “sexy?”
ie: Beowulf, Mr and Mrs Smith, Original Sin, Life or Something Like It, Gone in Sixty Seconds, Alexander..etc I’m sure the list could continue. Maybe because she is sexy it always looks like she’s playing sexy?
If so, she’s sort of one-dimensional to me, I guess.
I don’t have much interest in seeing this movie buuuut then I could enjoy watching Depp on the big screen and my man could enjoy Jolie…Meh

  5. Trekker says:

Saw it in a Raleigh, NC area theatre Fri. night and I was surprised that it was full! Lots of couples. We were pleasantly surprised and there were a lot of chuckles from the audience. “Sticks up their butts” critics are way off on this one. Been to Venice 2x and loved the scenery and would see the movie again. And I’m the type to be picky on what I see.

  6. Angie says:

This woman’s bone structure is just ridiculous.

  7. lucy2 says:

I like Paul and JD, but this is about the only semi-positive review I’ve seen of the film, so it’s definitely a pass from me. I’ll save my $10 for Black Swan.

  8. Bethany says:

I’d already made up my mind not to see this film before the reviews came out — too gimmic-y. Anything with AJ is too over-the-top skeletor-sexy. I waiting for The Black Swan’s wide release.

  9. WhiteNoise says:

Kaiser – I think it probably has a bit to do with being a brangeloonie in that you’re predisposed to like her, even when she’s not delivering. And nothing wrong with that. I’m more predisposed to love Johnnie Depp unconditionally (because he IS a fantastic actor imo) but although I haven’t see the film, everything I’ve seen of him in the trailers is pretty dire, as are the majority of the reviews. From the beginning, there just seemed nothing new or interesting about the premise of the movie and to be honest, I really do wonder what Depp was thinking when he signed on the dotted line. Ditto Jolie. I just hate movies that depend on big names at the expense of a well drawn story and convincing acting.

  10. albeli says:

A silly hot mess in which the leads have no chemistry and their performances are sub-par? (And AJ’s styling is ridiculous? And I made up my own mind about that from all the pics of her on the boat with those gloves and hair do.)

    No thanks.

  11. someone says:

I have absolutely no interest in seeing this movie,

  12. Eve says:

I remember the reviews of Clash of The Titans were terrible, but I rather enjoyed so…I really don’t care now about what they think of The Tourist (plus, there’s The Jolie, and Johnny, and Rufus Sewell).

And considering you’re suggesting it’s slightly better than Salt (and I had a lot of fun while watching it), I’m definitely going to see this one.

  13. viper says:

I watched this yesturday and it was just god awful. Depp and Jolie = the most awkward coupling ever. I have never felt acters acting so forced until this movie. There was absolutely NO chemistry. And you got the feeling that Depp seriously hated working on this movie. Plus, all you see are Jolie most of the time; they should have titled it Follow Jolie as a tourist. Because all you get is watching jolie walk, or drive a boat.

  14. Po says:

It’s funny, I’m waiting for the Black Swan too. This film didn’t even make it on my radar until I started seeing AJ interviews popping up everywhere. I’m not a huge fan of either of the main stars. I think for some people they will enjoy the movie whether its horrible or not because they have been waiting for the Angelina/Johnnie Depp moive for so long.

  15. ouch says:

    good performances. Funny. love them

  16. Leila says:

I’ll pass on this one too.

  17. bc says:

Aww, I thought it was cute. Not Oscar material, but then again, it never claims to be. It reminded me of the old school Cary Grant movies, which I LOVE. If you like North by Northwest and Charade, you will probably like this throwback. Also, Jolie brings the jewelry porn like WHOA.

  18. lola says:

I enjoyed it as well. My friend did not like the ending but i did.

It was a throwback movie, just a good little yarn that reminded me of something like roman holiday. Definitely not what i would have anticipated from the pairing of these two, but that’s kinda what made it work for me.

I didn’t like the stephanie beachum hair though, you’re right the evening dress and the white dress were both a bit of a bust.

  19. Marjalane says:

Just the previews alone look stupid; A bunch of shots of Angelina looking mysteriously smouldering. Nothing on the trailer makes me want to drop ten bucks on it.

  20. di butler says:

Why is Johnny wearing Diane Keaton’s suit in that top pic?

  21. heathen says:

I never go by the critics. I have to see a movie for myself to decide. There are plenty that the critics love that I don’t, and plenty they pan that I like. I’m seeing this — subpar Angie & Johnny are still hella better than most.

  22. Lady Jane says:

Ya, I don’t get the comment about her never playing ‘sexy’. That is totally inaccurate.

  23. Kaiser says:

Eve – I enjoyed it much more than Salt!

Re: Depp & Jolie’s “awkward” chemistry. I’ve been wondering if the two characters were ever actually supposed to have a sex scene, because that wouldn’t fit in the story at all. I just thought they acted “sweet” towards each other, like they had just met and liked each other.

Re: “Sexy” – I didn’t say she never played “sexy” – I said she rarely played “beautiful”. She rarely plays the femme fatale who every guy stops to check out.

  24. Solveig says:

I’m not going to see this movie, and for this reason I read the finale spoiler. I’m not writing here how the movie ends, of course, but it ends exactly the way I thought it would’ve ended. My intuition was intentionally facetious and ridiculous, but nonetheless unfortunately correct.

Ps: the last (and first) time I checked the reviews on rotten tomatoes, the movie was 14% rotten. Not that the current 20% is something to be glad of…

Pps: I enjoyed Salt too – as much as I can enjoy an unpretentious (or was it meant to be pretentious?) summer silly movie starring AJ, of course – but it has had better reviews than The Tourist.

Ppps: as some commenters above, I’m going to see Black Swan and The Fighter instead.

Why Johnny got involved in this tragedy? I mean, he has a solid career and surely this movie won’t damage it, but it’s a faux pas, nonetheless.
I’m not sure that I can say the same of FHVD’s career.

  25. REALIST says:

Re: reviewers. AO Scott reviewed “Eat Love Pray” very positively. The comments-whoa! He was getting MANY rotten tomatoes via e-mail. So, sometimes you just have to make your own call. I bet it would be a great date movie, even 1st date movie.

Counterexample: When I was a 17 in NC, my first date movie (with a man in his 20’s!) was “Excalibur”. Anyone remember that extraordinarily hot love scene in like the first 10 minutes? I was blushing like crazy. And yes, the critics loved it (and I think my date did, too)

Re Angie: I love that dress, btw. I think it’s cashmere-I’m a knitter, so no one disses cashmere (and Angie looks great in it besides..)

  26. frank says:

From reading the reviews it seems like the entire movie is an ode to Jolie. When she walks into rooms it is like the parting of the Red Sea. All eyes are on her overly draped thin frame. I think I skip this.

  27. Happymom says:

Haven’t seen it (4 kids-the only movies I’ve seen in the last 6 months are Megamind and HP)-but my parents saw it yesterday and my mom raved about the scenery.

  28. Kim says:

I loved it . Good couple movie. It will come in #2 this week . I’m seeing Narnia today of course that will be #1

  29. carrie says:

i didn’t see the same movie: no alchemy between Depp and Jolie,Depp is a miscat for me and he seemed to be bored,Jolie does a nice Jessica Rabbit, the story is a no-sense and caricatural and the final twist is obvious but there are nice pictures on Venice. It’s better than “killers”(with Heigl and Kutcher) but i prefer “knight&day”(Cruise/Diaz) because they have great time together

  30. Trillion says:

This is an extra beautiful phase for AJ. She’s other-worldy. I just watched Salt last night and I actually think her beauty is too distracting to play anything but a sex symbol. AJ is not a bad actress, but she must not have the chops of Charlize Theron, who seems to be able to act her way out of the “sex symbol” box quite effortlessly.

  31. mln76 says:

Can’t wait to see it. It has a 78% positive review with audiences on RT. I think the main problem is the previous work of the director The Lives of Others was like the most important movie ever so people are expecting something that moving.

  32. clorismetchum says:

paul bettany is sexy? when? he looks like he just crawled off his death bed. ugh.
i saw this movie, too. well, part of it. i got bored and starting ordering stuff off ebay from my phone about halfway through.

  33. crtb says:

I don’t like Anjolie however I have enjoyed many of her movies. I have no opinion of Johnny Depp. I have also enjoyed many of his movies. But when I saw the trailer for this movie, I knew it was going to be bad. The leads had no chemistry. There was no tension in the movie. It looked boring, contrived and predictable. Neither character looked like a real person but looked like an actor trying to act like a real person. And what’s up with Johnny Depp these days? He is in everything. He needs to take a break. Samuel L. Jackson, Eddie Murphy and Robert Dinero did that at one time. Took every movie role offered to them: good or bad. Now it seems JD is doing the same thing.

  34. Yasmine says:

A silly, sweet ILLOGICAL mess is more like it. The ending was the most ludicrous and cheap last-minute write-up I’ve seen in a looong time. Save your ten bucks for the Black Swan for sure. This movie made little sense, lacked chemistry, and played all the wrong music in the wrong scenes. If you also like going to the movies for the fashion, this still fails. The only consolation I get is seeing Paul Bettany.

  35. gloriaad says:

Saw the movie and enjoyed it anything with Depp and Jolie is going to be good just watching the two of them on screen was enough for me, also the theatre was packed so for those who are wishing for a flop forget it.

  36. heathen says:

@Eva? (#12 — can’t see name clearly) –that’s exactly what I mean. I enjoyed Clash of the Titans too even though the critics panned it. Sure, when the critics pan a movie, it probably isn’t going to win any Oscars, but so what? Not every movie needs to “heavy and important!” for it to be enjoyable.

I should probably confess re: Clash of the Titans, that I’m old enough to remember the original — granted I was a little girl — practically an embryo! (cough)– so I think I enjoyed it more for nostalgia. But, there are plenty of other examples where I’ve enjoyed movies the critics didn’t like. I decide for myself.

  37. lisa says:

I saw the film and it was actually really good. Don’t know what the critics wanted. It was a great date night film and we had a nice night looking at it. Angie and Johnny were cute together. I actually wanted it to be longer.

I don’t know why people that don’t like her are trashing a film they had no intention of seeing in the first place.

I would recommend it. The audience I saw it with were laughing and seemed to like it too.

  38. Lukie says:

I’ll wait till one of my friend’s buys the bootleg so I can borrow it.

I’d also like to move to whatever city you people live in that pay $10 to see a movie!

    $10? $10? Try $13.00 and $15 for 3-D!

  39. Cheyenne says:

@Stephy: she doesn’t “play” sexy, she is sexy. Maybe that’s why The Good Shepherd was one of her least successful movies. As one of the film critics said, nobody in his right mind would cast Angelina Jolie to play an unloved wife.

  40. cuter says:

  41. olivia says:

It’s probably going to be a hit, dontcha know! And besides, Angie knew it would be critically panned. She just did it for a fun vacation for her family. She is the BEST actress in Hollywood. Those 94% of the critics are just jellis h8ers.

(PS: I think it’s AWESOME that von Donnersmark and the producers are throwing Jolie under the bus, saying she talked everyone into doing it and was even responsible for rewriting the story. Bahhhhhhhh!)

  42. SamSam says:

I only paid $9, and saw it in a theatre that serves booze. 😀

All in all, I thought it was really cute and well done. I felt Jolie and Depp played the parts how they were supposed to be played, and did a fantastic job of it. Saw it with my roommate, who is a male, and he rather enjoyed it. He’s not a Jolie fan at all, but does consider himself a Depp fan. He totally agrees the parts were played well.

Protip: They weren’t supposed to have this earth shattering, tear your life apart falling head over heels chemistry. The plot makes that clear.

  43. fwozbo says:

I must be the only one who did not like Clash of the Titans. The dialogue was so bad, predictable and cliched (it made me laugh), and it reminded me of all those cheesy 1970 Sinbad movies. See The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973). The special effects haven’t improved that much in 30 years.

  44. Cheyenne says:

@Cuter: It opened at #2 and “tanked”? That’s a new definition of tanked.

  45. Candy says:

Not interested in seeing a montage of Jolie wrapped in finery amid a series of close ups of her photo shopped face.

  46. original gracie says:

“rather than some strident action heroine, bustin’ a cap in every bitch trying to mess with her.”

    Best line ever.

  47. cuter says:

@Cheyenne: according to deadline YES. Its a real TANK. and I smell razzies for Depp and Jolie.

  48. KsGirl says:

“If you like North by Northwest and Charade, you will probably like this throwback.”

    Oh no you di-int! 😀

I wonder if LoveAngelina is OK right now? Maybe we should send her some chocolates?

I’ll watch this when it pops up online, because AJ is beautiful enough that I can get past almost anything, but this does sound ilke a stinker.

  49. observer says:

I saw The Tourist yesterday and agree with your review, Kaiser. It reminded me of a somewhat lighthearted film from the fifties or sixties. I think the critics are expecting a serious film and reviewing it based on that rather than realizing it’s just not meant to be taken too seriously. It was an enjoyable movie.

editing to add: I’d put it in the same category with “To Catch a Thief,” although it’s not quite as good as “To Catch a Thief.”

  50. BabyCakes says:

I think she looks gorgeous in the dress. She always looks beautiful.

  51. Boromir's bytch says:

Saw it last night only about 30 people in the theater for opening night. It was dreadfully bad. About half way thru we noticed people were laughing — in the wrong places, but they were laughing. The more dramatic it got, the louder the snorting and snickering reactions from the tiny audience. It was absolutely cringe-worthy during the final scenes. Haven’t seen a turkey this big in quite a while. An absolute fail.

  52. jiggles says:

I’m a total Depp fanatic, but I didn’t let that blind me to this movie. I was psyched to see it last night, but shocked at how bad it was. People actually left half-way through — which made me sad. Depp (god love him) was awful, and what happened to the beautiful Jolie? Her face looked frozen, her frame starved, and her acting was a bit wooden. I used to love her looks…what happened?

  53. Cheyenne says:

@jiggles: of all Depp’s movies; the only one I really liked was “Sleepy Hollow”. He was great in that film. The first “Pirates” was fun but by the second movie the story was already old.

  54. jane16 says:

We never go by the critics opinions either, and will probably see this. I think that profile shot of her on the poster is really strange, my husband thinks its hideous. Didn’t we have a poster here who used to say she looked like a trout from the side? That’s what it looks like to me.

  55. truthzbetta says:

Angie’s face and bod are not the same as the (horrible) Lara Croft movies. Her face is just so different.

Depp, Depp, Depp. Used to love him, may love him again some day. Right now he looks like a weird, greasy old pervert though. It’s not charming, it’s Valderama-y. If he were single I’d think the worst, ped worst. Thank God he’s a happy guy with a kid and subdued French country life but yech.

  56. lindsay says:

i agree with lucy2. this is the only semi-positive review for this film ive seen also. every single review for “the tourist” that ive read from ANYWHERE has been bad but ive heard black swan is PHENOMINAL! ive also heard that burlesque is really good, even though it seems just like an updated showgirls.

  57. gloaming says:

I would hold off on saying wether or not a Movie ‘Tanks’ until it’s released in the rest of the world.
You know, where there are also cinema’s……

  58. khaveman says:

Hate her. I find her vile and so self-worshipping. Depp can do NO wrong ever. I don’t want to see those two in the same movie now or ever. Her acting is pitiful.

  59. redlips says:

I will pass on this…..Loathe Depp, and can not stomach the Sainted one.

  60. koala says:

i actually like angelina; i think she’s beautiful, although i’ve never really enjoyed her films. seems like she’s always signing up for big-budget bombs. it is almost as though her persona over shadows any role she takes, and that’s not necessarily a good thing. beautiful, yes, nice person, probably… meh actress.

  61. Shay says:

khaveman I’m the opposite. I’m tired of Depp’s overacting, and will give this movie a miss.
I was put off Depp after his ‘pedo’ rendition of Willy Wonka. He is so goddamn disappointing as an actor.

  62. Strawberry says:

@lindsay: You heard Burlesque was good?! On what planet, Christina cannot act her way into, or out of, a paper bag..

  63. lrm says:

Um, noone said AJ doesnt play sexy-
I think this write up said she never plays ‘beautiful’ as in ‘everyoen checks her out in the film beautiful’-like they built that into the dialogue/scenes…
sure, she is always sexy and an ass kicker, but she doesnt play old school beautiful very much in her films.

also, i probably will rent this…but there is no way i am seeing black swan. I hate natalie portman-so over her. and though she’s a better actor than jolie [and i dont enjoy jolie on screen AT ALL-Mr and Mrs Smith made me want to kill myself-these movies are all over 2 hours these days-wtf?] anyway…even if portman is a decent actor-she’s annoying. anyway, the tourist does not seem appealing….anywho.

  64. teri says:

I seen the movie last night with my husband. We enjoyed it and plan on taking my daughter tomorrow to see it. Not sure why the bad reviews either since I enjoyed it. It’s not the best they’ve done but not awful either. Hey at least the JP family got a great vacation out of it. : D

  65. MrsOdie2 says:

Did you see the picture of Brad pinching her tuckus on the red carpet? I know that Brad loves his women SUPER skinny (Juliette Lewis, Gwynnie, and Jen were all at their thinnest with him), and I imagine he was saying to her, “Remember how I told you that you could stand to lose a few pounds? RIGHT HERE.”

  66. LittleDeadGirl says:

I have no intention of seeing this and I love both Angelina and Depp but it looks sort of gimmicky and boring. I was not happy with Salt. Anyway, Kaiser I rather liked your review of this movie. It was sort of refreshing and simple (I’m so tired of reviews that go into these deep discussion about life and politics) You should do random reviews of movie you see.

I’m also looking forward to Black Swan. I think it’s gonna be one of those movies you need to see if only to know what everyone else is talking about

  67. The Hamm is My Dream Man says:

Black Swan is phenomenal. I was in a literally sold out theater on a tuesday night (it is San Francisco though so that may have had something to do with it).

I have no plans to see the Tourist and from reading some of the reviews, I was right when I saw the trailers: poorly acted, poorly written.

  68. Deborah says:

I just saw the movie and it was great!!! Angelina is crazy beautiful in it and Johnny Depp is interesting and sexy as always. I loved it and it was way better then Salt…

  69. latam says:

I saw it and loved it. I was expecting an absolute shitfest becuse of all the reviews.

I thought it was really sweet and funny in a dry way. The performances were understated but solid. Angelinas accent was fine – and im english. Thought the chemistry was decent aswell, it was never supposed to be a torrid love affair so it was more of a growing affection thing.

I dont understand why critics are ripping this to shreds, are they jsut doing it because of the director/jolie/depp = has to be an oscar worthy film? it was never meant to be.

or do Americans not like the type of humour in it?

I went with a guy and he literally left going on about how it was awesome.
    The reviews are really unfair

  70. Majosha says:

I’ll pass on this one, thanks. While the critics are certainly not my sole barometer, when the reviews are this bad across the board, I generally take heed. Besides, I’d rather save my money for “Black Swan.”

@Hamm: Whereabouts in SF do you live? I’m originally from Berkeley, so I’m always curious when I cross paths with a fellow Bay Area native (or maybe you’re a transplant, but you get what I’m saying).

  71. latam says:

also i thought it was loads better than salt

  72. DetRiotgirl says:

Re: Burlesque… it wasn’t bad! Well, it wasn’t bad if you like that sort of movie. It’s one of those “little girl moves to the big city and makes good on her dreams” type of films. It’s entertaining in the same sort of way that a movie about a fairy princess might be entertaining to a little girl. It’s certainly not for everyone, and it is certainly not going to win any awards (well, maybe a Razzie or two). But, it was good entertainment on it’s own terms.

I think I said this on another post. But, it was basically two parts Coyote Ugly, two more parts Showgirls and another part Moulin Rouge. If you like any of those movies, you might like Burlesque.

As for the tourist, meh. I might watch it on Netflix. Sometimes I enjoy really light weight movies. Obviously, I mean, I admit to having enjoyed Burlesque. Lol

  73. latam says:

loved the film posted earlier but its in moderation. The trailer was awful and did it no justice

  74. Camille says:

Your review sounds exactly as I have imagined it Kaiser 😀 , just some silly lite-weight fun. Many thanks for the review.
I will see it when it gets onto DVD.

  75. juliana says:

The poster who said that AJ’s personal life overshadows her acting said exactly what I feel.
When I see Miss Jolie on screen, all I can think of is the latest tabloid gossip involving her and BP.

However, I did like her work in “Hackers”, and my personal favorite, “Gia”.

  76. Cheyenne says:

@koala: “Big budget bombs”? Her last 5 movies earned $1.5 billion. Them’s some bombs.

  77. Liana says:

It was OK. Figured out the ending about 20 minutes into the film, and what I figured out was what I thought would be the ending before I even entered the theater. But it was fine as an afternoon diversion.

  78. LOVE ANGELINA says:

I have just come back from seeing The Tourist and I also saw Black Swan. I just wanna say not a damn thing was wrong with Angie’s accent, it was perfectly fine English accent, Angie and Johnny had great chemistry, and it didn’t suck. It wasn’t a terrible movie. It wasn’t the best movie I have ever seen but it was solid. I actually prefer movies where Angie is busting a cap in someone’s ass, Angie however was fantastic. I really get what she was was saying when said she had to play “a lady.” Angie switched while she walked, she was excited about wearing clothes, and she never fought anyone or picked up a gun. So there ya go. Also the little romance in the film between Johnny and Angie was sweet. I loved the ending so much. Oh if your going to see this movie for Rufus Sewell your gonna be very disappointed…I really think an actor like that should have been used more and I felt bad for him. Like seriously any loser could have played that part…why him? Paul Bettnay was great and I loved his chemistry with Angie. You know, besides the bad guys they all had good chemistry with Angie.

Uhhh Black Swan was amazing but OMG, I was so not prepared for the goryness, I got so queasy. There are some scenes with blood and bad skin and vomiting. I covered my eyes during quite a few scenes so now I have to see it again, my friend couldn’t tell me anything I missed. I loved it though. I have never seen an actress EARN an Academy Award nomination and win more (besides Angie of course) than Natalie Portman did. If Nat doesn’t win I swear I will protest. She killed that performance and made that movie.

P.S. I have to say this or I will burst. I have never thought once Kaiser that you were even a tiny bit, a Brad and Angie fan, not saying you don’t like them or anything but as much as I hate the Brangeloonie moniker, I know us, and I wouldn’t invite you to one of our meetings if we had one (I am more of an Angieloonie anyway, hell I might not be invited). In fact when I used to see this site in Dlisted’s daily links (when I was a poster there) I frowned more than once when reading a title of whatever Brad or Angie story you guys would do. Uhh so yea, I say that say, that maybe just maybe, The Tourist was STILL not that bad even if you aren’t fanatic for Angie or Brad or Johhny or anyone.

  79. Sunnyjyl says:

I will see any movie where Venice is the backdrop. 😉

  80. wonderful says:

Uh oh, Love Angelina frowned more than once! Scold, scold!

  81. Liana says:

oh Good Lord. Does the lunacy ever stop?

  82. tracking says:

Fair enough. I’ll probably see it at some point (mainly for Venice!), but am in no rush. The whole thing seems a little forced.

I did rush to see Black Swan, which was fabulous. Very intense and original. Agree with Love Angelina that it will be very disappointing if Portman doesn’t win BA Oscar. Have seen all other BA contenders (other than Kidman in Rabbit Hole) and don’t think they even come close. Just hope enough people will see this movie!

  83. Majosha says:

    @Liana: Nope.

  84. Crash2GO2 says:

    @Liana and Majosha: lol!!

  85. Blaster says:

@Cheyenne Heh. I laugh when I read those numbers. $632 million of that comes from Kung Fu Panda. And she had about 10 total lines in that movie. That movie is a huuuuuuge bulk of that “$1.3 billion” Box Office and I honestly don’t think she was the real reason it made as much as it did. It was all the chemistry of Jack Black and Dustin Hoffman, in my opinion.

In which case, Lucy Lui’s character had more lines in Kung Fu Panda, therefore, Lucy Lui has grossed almost $700 MILLION IN THE PAST 3 YEARS ALONE!

See? Accurate, but misleading. Or what about Megan Fox, who in the past three years has grossed more than $1.6 Billion? Was it for the robots and explosions? Or her?

I’d compare it to people saying Marley and Me made money, not because of JA and Owen Wilson, but because of the dogs 🙂

  86. Emily says:

Lol, I was wondering where LoveAngelina was as I was reading all the comments, and then she arrives with that. Gold.

  87. Liana says:

Saw Black Swan. Was a little underwhelmed, although Portman did a very good job. She usually leaves me cold, but in this film, that worked to her advantage.

  88. redlips says:

    @Blaster…..Thank you and Amen!

  89. Sofia says:

    Cheyenne:

you were responding to jiggles, but I have to say I feel sorry for you if you cannot appreciate Johnny Depp’s performances. To say you loved Angie in this role (and all other roles, cause I see you jumping to her defense on this site constantly) but not Depp’s performances is insane!

  90. Cheyenne says:

@blaster: You missed the point. Koala said Angie’s movies are expensive bombs. They may be expensive but they surely aren’t bombs. And bringing any other actor into it is apropos of nothing at all.

  91. justathought says:

golly gee, i thought the film was entertaining…and goodness gracious, the theater was packed…and i bet your bottom dollar, this movie will be in the black…so take that you critical critics with a grain of salt.. pretty please.

  92. tapioca says:

Lower opening weekend than (equivalent double-headers) Knight & Day or The Bounty Hunter, only $1 million more than Killers. That’s gotta hurt!

Of course, it doesn’t help that the movie captures the exact moment Johnny Depp lost his looks to bloat…

  93. rraven says:

What I really want to see is how she’ll recover from this. This movie basically came to life because Angie put it all together, from the director to getting Johnny Depp as a male lead. There’ll be a bunch of red carpets in some European cities and I really hope she manages to look both happy and humble otherwise everybody viewing this box office and critical disappointment as long awaited karma will probably explode with ecsatsy.

  94. BlackMamba says:

Kaiser I went to see it this weekend as well with my boyfriend. We liked it kind of, we just didn’t know what to make of it. Was it a drama? comedy? action? My bf was expecting kick ass Ange so he was desappointed. Paul Bethamy on the other hand, SO SEXY! He’s voice, the suits, his eyes, so very hot. Anyways it wasn’t bad, there were some funny part for sure from the ganster especially. I would watch it again

  95. Cheyenne says:

@rraven: She’ll “recover” the same way she and Brad recovered from A Mighty Heart, which was a box office failure by any standard, even though the critics liked it. So sorry to disappoint you.

  96. Eve says:

    @ Kaiser:

Maybe I liked Salt so much because I prefer the badass Angelina Jolie over the romantic one (for instance, I LOVED Wanted — watched twice in the theaters and bought the DVD).

    @ Heathen:

It’s Eve. Well, I agree with you here: it’s not because the critics destroy a movie that it’s going to be impossible for us to enjoy it. I remember people trashed Pink Panther II but I had a great time while watching it *shrugs* (Andy Garcia and Alfred Molina were surprisingly funny in it). I thought it was funnier than the first one. Sure, I think the critics are doing their job by warning us about some really bad films (I wish I had read the reviews before entering the theater to see The Dark — with Maria Bello and Sean Bean), but their opinion isn’t necessarily what’s going to stop me from watching them.

And yes, I saw the original Clash of the Titans when I was a kid and I still love it to this day — even with all those cheesy special effects (granted, I’m a huge fan of Ray Harryhausen’s work). I wish the remake had more mythology and less action but overall I thought it was pretty entertaining. Plus, there’s mads Mikkelsen (sexy as hell as Draco) and his acting (although he didn’t have much to work with) is always worth watching. Too bad he won’t be in the sequel.

P.S.: The original Medusa, though, was so much scarier!

  97. rraven says:

@ Cheyenne: I know they’ll be fine, but the image Angie has right now, with all the controversy from the Bosnian movie and Chelsea Handler’s rant the last thing she needed was a for this movie to not do well. She’s my favourite actress before Diane Lane and of course I wish this movie was doing better but lets not kid ourselves, it seems people are out for blood with her lately and her public image is taking a severe beating. It certainly wasnt this bad with a Mighty heart. I wish her the best though, I’m sure she’ll pull through.

  98. The Hamm is My Dream Man says:

majosha: I’m a transplant up from Los Angeles to go to school like half the people who live around Berkeley 😛 I’m still East Bay-had to travel to the city to see the film.

Sorry to clog your BART stations with curious meandering and wondering about this mystical “public transit”.

  99. Cyui says:

Movies that aren’t kid movies action movies or have special affect don’t do well. Kids go out to the box office. These last two weeks are final weeks.

Chelsea Handler doesn’t have anything to do with anything. It came in #2 with 7mill less than the #1 film. Why didn’t girls go run out and see Depp. It had two superstars not one. Saying you hope she pulls through…what! Betcha she’s not even thinking about it.

Shell probably get accolades for the Bosnian film cause those people that pump ou the awards love her.

  100. Cyui says:

It will make it’s money overseas and it will last throughout the yrs. It’s finals week for students I meant. I’ll go see it Friday.

  101. Sakyiwaa says:

17 MILLION! FOR ALL THE SILLY REVIEWS, I THOUGHT IT WOULDN’T EVEN MAKE 10 DOLLARS! lol! i’m glad. it’s cool. but i kid you not when i say i thought the critics’ panning was gonna extinguish it, for sure. i know people are curious to see it, they just don’t want to pay money to. so it’ll be in their Netflix queues or they’ll get it on DVD rental. it’s Johnny and Angie, after all. trust me. even the haters will see it. call it ‘research’ for their hate-filled rants. lol! A Mighty Heart was way worse in box office returns but the critics loved it. plus, this isn’t even her lowest rated movie. Original Sin is…and it was with Antonio Banderas. J Depp’s Sweeney Todd didn’t do as well as expected a couple of years ago either. and Halle Berry has a movie rated 0% on RT. these people take hits all the time, just that Angie has taken extra this month, she will pull through though. i hope to see her looking great in whichever country she and the fam zip off to next. i hope they make the movie budget back though :).

  102. lilieve says:

Wow, hard to believe the reviews have been so harsh, but I admit I do not enjoy high powered suspense thrillers nor do I watch hundreds of films every week but unlike several romantic comedies this years, I don’t think it’s at all a waste of money. I would like to comment on the comments made about Angelina and Johnny Depp not having chemistry…it seems everyone forgot that this is a movie, and their characters (supposedly) did not know each other…why do you expect that after one or two days of knowing each other their going to act like they’re in the very climax of a climax? Apparently the director and or script wanted them to still be seen as individuals until the last scene! If you want graphic sex there’s plenty of porn just for you. Jolie was a police woman, which makes her stiffness believable. The slowness seems to be an attempt to mimick the old style movies, and I say “Yea”. Many reviewers said Depp was ‘dull’ but I thought Depp played Frank believably…he’s 3 yrs into being a widow…why wouldn’t he be melancholy? The part I missed that did not escape my keen friend, was that the 1st letter gave the clue that he said to look for someone with, ” his size and frame”…an interesting observation of a male…that he would rightly understand that since she is very in love with him would recognize his ‘size and frame’instinctively. But I can see it as being somewhat unbelievable as well. I’m not a big AJ fan, but who can act as mysterious and cold as she? I agree,I’d love to see her play some roles with some warmth-that would be some acting! All in all, I thought it was an enjoyable movie and so did the other folks in the theatre….who applauded at the end.

  103. Majosha says:

@Hamm: LOL, no worries about your BART misadventures. I relocated to the rural Northwest many years ago, but when I lived in the Bay Area, I generally drove everywhere so my rapid transit skills were/are unimpressive at best. Do you attend Cal? Sorry if I seem nosy, but my Dad taught there for many years, and my sister is an alumnus, so I guess I’ve been automatically conditioned to sniff out any fellow Bears, lol.

  104. anon says:

@Sakyiwaa: . even the haters will see it. call it ‘research’ for their hate-filled rants. lol!
    🙂

  105. The Hamm is My Dream Man says:

majosha: You’re sniffing in the right direction-I’m an Cal alumnus 🙂 I’ve lived here some odd 6 years or so and still get confused on the BART. I have a car but fear bridges and overpriced city parking garages so I usually just take the BART over when I want to go to the city.

    GO Bears!

  106. Eve says:

it’s Johnny and Angie, after all. trust me. even the haters will see it. call it ‘research’ for their hate-filled rants. lol!

ROTFL! Yes, they WILL watch this one for sure — except right now, they don’t want to take the risk of involuntarily “helping” its box office. After all, this is the bomb featuring Jolie they’ve been waiting for so this is sort of “their moment”, you know.

A Mighty Heart was way worse in box office returns but the critics loved it. plus, this isn’t even her lowest rated movie. Original Sin is…and it was with Antonio Banderas.

Original Sin is a cheese festival but boy, there are three extremely hot leading actors (Jolie, Banderas and Thomas Jane) — and they all show up naked! — in it.

  107. anon says:

Congrats to The Tourist and its cast on their Golden Globe nominations 🙂

  108. lilieve says:

Congrads to cast & crew of The Tourist on your Golden Globe nomination! <3

  109. Sami says:

I find it poetic justice that a non rom-com actress can get nominated for the GGs, when professionals can’t. 😀

  110. Alina says:

I’ll watch it, as Angelina & Johnny star in it. I just hope I’ll not fall asleep during the movie. “Wanted” made mesleep so well…

  111. Shortontime says:

Sorry but just saw this movie. Read all the bad reviews and…
loved it, could see it again. Thought having Johnny Depp across from Angelina was wonderful. Venice scenery – have to save my money for a trip. Not a seat left in the theatre and line waiting to get in when we got out.
