Michelle Williams’ Dior & darker roots: most improved, or still a ways to go?

Michelle Williams is having a good moment. Blue Valentine’s rating was changed from an NC-17 to an R. Blue Valentine is getting some serious awards buzz, and just this morning, she was nominated for a lead actress Golden Globe. And to add to the goodness, she’s no longer got funky too-blonde hair! YAY! These are photos of Michelle at yet another Blue Valentine screening last night in NYC. The dress is Dior, and I kind of hate it – on Michelle. I just don’t find it flattering on her figure, and it makes her upper arms look heavy (which they are not), and it‘s much too short for winter. It doesn’t even look like she’s wearing panty hose either. Ugh. But I love the hair – her hair has been looking hideous lately, I think because she had to dye it white-blonde to play Marilyn Monroe. But now she chopped some off and added some roots to the mix, and it looks so much better.

Note to Goop: this is how you should be doing your blonde.

Her eyebrows look a bit messy and I agree the dress should be longer, but she’s so lovely she can get away with the odd faux pas

  2. dread pirate cuervo says:

Her eyebrows look terrible. This is not the look for her.

  3. bite me says:

kate holmes must be so jealous of her career…love the new hair cut

  4. Gabriela says:

Before I read the headline I thought: Oh no, not another Carrie Mulligan story.

They look a lot alike now! Only I think Michelle Williams looks fresher and prettier, less weepy I guess.

  5. malachais says:

I personally think this blonde looks very unnatural and is not flattering, it ages her by 10 years IMO. Forget the hair, the brows look worse.

The dress is also not flattering to her body type, she a pretty woman but definitely needs a better stylist.

The other day when the site made the comment about Katie Holmes wishing she had Anne Hathaway’s career my mind went straight to Michelle Williams. I think if anything Katie would probably want her career. She works often and does some good work and these two grew up together. She may not have Katie’s publicity or notoriety but I don’t think that is necessarily a bad thing.

Good News: The hair is a huge improvement.

Bad News: RED EYEBROWS? I’m all for dark eyebrows with light hair, I think its stunning… but Michelle’s brows look painted on, plus they’re red.

Also, Michelle has very sloped shoulders. I never noticed it before, but the sleeveless look is unflattering and makes her look like a linebacker.

  8. LOVE ANGELINA says:

I don’t like short hair on her but I do love the dress. Its so pretty. I think Nat Portman would be just a doll in this dress.

  9. bros says:

she looks a little botoxy sheened and i hate the dress. I wish she would stop dressing like a little girl.

  10. Sara says:

Pasty white body check, white dress check, white hair check.

  11. Alexa says:

I don’t see many photos of her, but are her teeth bad or something? I’d like to see a different expression on her face.

  12. carrie says:

for once i agree with Kaiser

  13. Lori says:

I don’t like the dress on her, but I think she’s adorable otherwise. Maybe a bit too much eyebrow pencil.

  14. sapphire says:

Do these people actually look in a mirror before they go out? Talented and pretty actress, badly toned hair, dress in the wrong color and inherently unflattering. Nicole Kidman eyebrows. I guess not.

And the shoes! I love that the FugGirls call the extreme platform and peep toed booties “hooves”

  15. Roxanne75 says:

ugh she looks old…poor thing…she needs to get back to her roots….(no pun intended):)

  16. Marjalane says:

Love that haircut- it looks adorable on her. The eyebrows are little harsh…

  17. TG says:

Love everything. Maybe it is just her pose.

  18. bellaluna says:

    @ malachais – Co-sign!

  19. jen says:

It looks like she bought that dress in the tots department. It’s Ridiculous!

  20. ziggy says:

the hair color is not flattering and does not match the eyebrows. the cut is cute on her. the dress is cute too!

  21. Sandy says:

She is way too old for that dress

  22. Judy says:

Don’t like the dress, but LOVE the haircut. She’s lovely.

  23. mel says:

her eyebrows look messy. her hair needs to be a little more darker and i still prefer her with short hair.

  24. kristin says:

I love her hairstyle! Maybe dark brown or auburn hair would look good on her also.

  25. Cheyenne says:

Eyebrows too dark, shoes don’t go with the dress, and the dress looks like she bought it in Kids R Us.

  26. serena says:

She is very old lady like these days..ugh. and that frozen expression.. what the hell, smile a bit more!

  27. heatheradair says:

She looks post-chemical peel a’la Samantha at Carrie’s book release party back in the day.

And I hate how catty it sounds to say this, since I try to be an advocate of pale-and-proud, but I feel like a little bronzer on the legs would be a huge improvement.

As would some color in the dress.

And some powder on the face.

    And a less Renee Zellweger-ish squint/pout.

HOWEVER – she usually chooses classy over trashy and she’s got a great career and keeps herself out of the tacky tabloid circuit for the most part, so I find it hard to find much wrong with her.

Think I might have loved the dress more if it were chocolate brown or royal blue or even sort of garnet-colored….?

  28. Donna Wingfield says:

Nothing about this look appeals to me. I don’t think she’s at all attractive.

  29. Randomness says:

Just does not do it for me. It’s like I want to like her, but I can’t seem to find a reason why.

  30. Crash2GO2 says:

I don’t get the hate for the eyebrows. I don’t like her posture or the frozen expression on her face. Why is she pursing her lips like that? To give herself cheekbones?

  31. LolaBella says:

Not a great overall look; love the hair and the shoes.

The dress does not suit her; Emma Watson would wear the hell out of this dress.

That said, Michelle is gorgeous and yes, KATE (LOL) Holmes is weeping nightly that she doesn’t have Michelle’s career.

  32. Hakura says:

@HeatherAdair (#27)- I cosign your comment in it’s entirety, as well as the ‘Pale and Proud’ sentiment.

My first thought when I saw this picture was “Come on, can’t she try clothing with some color?”

The pale hair is a risky look, but she could pull it off if she would try for a little ‘balance’. The pale *everywhere* just isn’t working. The haircut is lovely, and she has the face shape to work it. But no contrast or tone anywhere is boring.

The eyebrows are the only thing with any color on her, I think that’s why everyone is just drawn directly to them. She could stand to lighten them a *little*, and needs to wear clothing with some color.

  33. Az says:

Who would have thought that Jen Lindley from Dawson’s Creek would go so far? I bet Katie Holmes throws darts at Michelle’s picture then cries and cries.

  34. ur mama says:

she just needs to push those shoulders back. I think she is way cute. Would not want to do her though, maybe smoke some grass and hang out.

  35. mimi says:

She is MUCH prettier in person. My husband and I live about 3 or 4 blocks from Michelle. We see her sometimes and I think she is very pretty. I think it is a simple case of her not being very photogenic. But as someone who has seen her in person several times, I can tell you she is a pretty lady.
