Roger Federer & Rafael Nadal join together to support each other’s charities

You know that Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are friends off the court, right? I remember Vogue’s profile of Nadal last year, where Nadal was talking about how much respect he has for Federer, and how Federer is “one of the greatest tennis players in history, if not the greatest.” Nadal also talked about beating Federer on the court, and Federer’s high emotions afterwards: “I didn’t really know what to do. I felt sad for him. Those are difficult moments when you’re living through them, but over the years they become moments that both he and I will be able to look back on fondly—they’re emotional moments.” So… they’re buddies. Professional friends, arguably the two greatest tennis players working today, if not two of the best ever, in the history of tennis. So is it so surprising that they would join together for two exhibition games, all to support each other’s charities? Honestly, it’s so nice it’s making me tear up a little.

World number one Rafael Nadal has avenged his two recent defeats to Roger Federer with a victory over his rival in a charity match in Madrid, Spain. Wednesday night’s clash was the second of two exhibitions aimed at raising money for the pair’s foundations, with Federer winning Tuesday’s contest in the Swiss city of Zurich.

It was the third time in the last month that the world’s top-two male tennis players have met and Nadal’s first victory in that period, after Federer won in Switzerland and at the ATP World Tour Finals in London, England.

Twenty-four hours earlier the two stars joined forces to raise funds for Roger Federer’s foundation, and the “Match for Africa” raised $2.6 million for the 29-year-old’s charity.

The 23-year-old Nadal thanked his opponent for his participation in the match and was pleased the duo could use their status to raise money for a good cause.

“I say thank you very much to Roger for coming here to Madrid and supporting my foundation today,” the nine-time grand slam winner told the ATP Tour’s official website after winning the match 7-6 (7-3) 4-6 6-1.

“Both of us are very happy that we can finally have this event and raise a lot of money for these kids. I know that with what we’re going to raise … it’s not going to be decisive but it will be a help. It’s going to be important to improve this world a little bit.”

The contest, named the “Joining Forces For the Benefit Of Children” match, attracted an all-star crowd to the Caja Magica, including Spain’s Queen Sofia.

Sweet, right? Federer won one, and Nadal won one. And they raised millions of dollars, and people got to see two of the best players in the world compete against each other. Lovely.

Oh, and for those who say that we have to pick a side, either Team Rafa or Team Federer… I’m Team Federer, just because I think he’s a very kind, sweet man, and a real gentleman. But Rafa’s not bad at all.

Team Rafa all the way. Federer is a little too smug for my tastes. Plus Rafa was sinfully hot in that Shakira video! But they are both great ambassadors for the sport, tennis would be much poorer without them.

  2. Ol' Mrs says:

Raf needs a hair intervention!! LOL! I love the guy but the hair….
Nice to see two great athletes who are such great people – I love that they’re friends!

  3. Kaiser says:

Ol’ Mrs. – LMAO – Rafa’s hair is very Farrah Fawcett.

  4. Kiki says:

I’m team Rafa because Federer once threw a tantrum when he lost a match… Reminded me of that hot McEnroe dude…

  5. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

    Team Federer!!

But they are both sweet and great athletes.

  6. melinda says:

I just love Federer! I think I’ve stated that at least 10 times on this site. Hehehehe.

  7. lila says:

Federer looks great in a suit, much better than on the tennis court.

  8. mln76 says:

I am team Federer because I think he plays tennis like a dancer and Rafa picks his butt while he plays and is really OCD. But I like Rafa’s additude.

  9. Iggles says:

    they’re both fug..

  10. carrie says:

    it’s very nice

  11. latam2012 says:

Nadal is such a sweet and respectful guy even when he loses, very gracious.

Federer is too smug and can be pretty ungracious in defeat

  12. Jeri says:

Good for them, how thoughtful and caring for them to take action for the good of others.

    Other celebs should take note.

  13. flutters says:

I’m Team Federer too but I honestly love both of them. They’re both class acts and how awesome that they got together to support some great causes. It’s nice to hear stories about superstar athletes who do good.

  14. I Choose Me says:

Yikes! What’s with the 70’s threads and hairstyle Nadal? I like that he and Federer are friends and I think this is a great thing that they’re doing for charity but I’m too distracted by his outfit to focus on the article. I’m guessing he made the decision to dress like this himself. If not, his stylist needs to go to rehab for whatever it is he or she is on.

  15. AuroraMoonBeam says:

Is I just me or do these two look alike? (first pic) & I don’t think his hair is Nadal’s “worst” feature. Lol at least he doesn’t have some “trendy” bieber emo cut…

  16. Jennifer says:

Federer is HOT!!! The first time I saw them they were playing each other in one of the tennis championships. Two tall, dark, athletic guys battling it out on the tv screen at the gym. Made that elliptical work-out go alot better!

  17. mln76 says:

I am a life long tennis fan and for me on court Fed’s combination of grace and intimidation on especially a few years ago at his peak are really sexy and make me forget about his huge honking nose.BTW he is very emotional on court but I do believe him to be a gentleman. One player I can’t stand is Andy Roddick he is a jerk. I remember he wouldn’t even let some 10 year old beat him at a charity event during the US open when every other player had the grace to let their opponents (who were kids) win.

  18. birdgherl says:

Now this is how filthy rich, gorgeous, famous people should act.

  19. Chris says:

Federer has always seemed like such a genuinely nice guy.

  20. crumbcake says:

    I LOVE Roger Federer!!! A

  21. guilty pleasures says:

Hmmm, this makes it even harder that they fight so incessantly over me!
Love both of these men, they are warriors on the court, gentlemen off. And slightly on the cute side..
    Lovely men, good for them.

  22. shirleycogswell says:

i am having trouble donating to the charities. very disappointed that during the matches an 800# wasn’t posted so those of us who wished to donate could do so…can you help me with this?

  23. nnn says:

I like them both and they both are pretty grounded with a good attitude.

  24. LittleDeadGirl says:

Team Djokovic! -lol- Kidding, yeah these two are pretty cool and it’s nice to see them act like gentlemen.

  25. Stubbylove says:

Team Rafa – however I love them both. Tennis is my sport – I’m so proud to have these two as the ambassadors of our sport. Both are class acts.

  26. Zelda says:

How are these two different, not-related people?

  27. Kath says:

    Never heard of these people.

  28. bee says:

    @Kath
you don’t like tennis, do you?

I saw Nadal once while he was on vacation and he was really nice, even a little shy when we started shouting campeón!!! from one boat to another (long story…)

I used to prefer Federer’s style, but Nadal is really improving, he’s not relaying so much on pure strength these days

  29. guilty pleasures says:

@kath, better to keep your ‘mouth shut and be thought a fool, than open it and prove it.
These men are icons of everything good, even a non-sports fan should have an inkling…I would think.

  30. gg says:

Darn, they both got the same weird hairdo. They look like twinsies.
