Call me crazy, but I think Country Strong is going to go down as one of Gwyneth Paltrow’s biggest career blunders. Granted, I don’t see how any significant number of people will actually pay to sit through Gwyneth’s slurry Brit-Brit twang, nor her incredibly awkward and hilarious dance moves. But Gwyneth is still talking, still promoting, still trying to entice us into watching her shake her vitamin-deficient booty. She already sanctimoniously gooped about motherhood, and now she’s bringing out the big guns: she’s giving quotes (well, a quote) about her relationships with Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck. Oh, GOOP. It’s like you want us to think it’s 1997 again.
Long before she settled down with British rocker husband Chris Martin (they have kids Apple, 6, and Moses, 4), Gwyneth Paltrow was one of Hollywood’s most eligible bachelorettes — and her beaus included both Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck.
In a new E! special, Gwyneth Paltrow, that aired Wednesday night, the Country Strong star, 38, admits those high-profile, late-90s romances were kind of weird.
“It was strange to be part of a public couple,” she says in the interview.
The profile also reveals that Paltrow’s road to Hollywood wasn’t as easy as some might expect. Although she is the daughter of actress Blythe Danner and late director Bruce Paltrow, she didn’t get a free ride while she waited for her big break.
“We could have paid for everything and had a spoiled kid,” mother Danner says. “[But] I think it’s really important for people to work hard.”
Paltrow admits: “I would say ‘Dad, I can’t go out to dinner, I have no money,’ and he would say ‘you’re welcome to come over here and eat at our house anytime, but I’m not giving you money for your social life.'”
Plus, the star sheds new light on her struggle with post-partum depression following son Moses’ birth in 2006. “You don’t want anybody to know that you’re depressed or crying all the time, ” she said. “There’s this shame that we bring to it and it’s incredibly debilitating and scary and you just don’t feel like yourself.”

So it was just the one solitary quote about Pitt & Affleck… for now. She probably has a few more things to say about them, but E! just hasn’t released the quotes yet.
But anyway… this whole thing, the random quote and looking up these old photos… it’s made me incredibly nostalgic. Remember when Gwyneth was the Queen Bee? Remember when everyone was obsessed with her? Remember how friggin’ snotty she was even back then? Good times. Nowadays… well, do you think Gwyneth ever feels the pang of nostalgia, ever wishes she could go back and be The It Girl? I bet she does.

Thing is, I think in her mind she still Is the “it” girl. I think she definately still thinks she competes physically with the younger girls coming up but that shes “so much more mature and has more wisdom. Thats why she has the audacity to preach & give advice on the world, shes’ been there done it, and still fabulous and relevant (in her mind). Can’t stand her, never could.

She’s been talking about Brad left and right. Lainey had a blurb last week about how she called Garret Hedlund a young Brad Pitt. It gets her buzz for the movie I guess but really, how hypocritical is it to talk about being so private while you mine your past love-life for publicity.

While I have no idea how happy they are together or what the state of their marriage is, I do remember reading early on in their relationship that they were going to make a point of not being photographed together. Plus, Gwynnie said they decided never to appear on the red carpet together and they never have. I don’t think that means they are leading “separate lives” I think it means they are trying to be as private as possible.
P.S.: It was announced today that Gwynnie will be in Las Vegas on New Year’s Eve when Coldplay, JayZ and Beyonce perform at the opening of some new hotel in Vegas. If they weren’t together, why would she bother to be in Vegas with him?
I can’t imagine why anyone would want to go see Country Strong. The trailers look horrible. It looks extra cringe worthy. I agree with the first poster…she probably thinks she still is the It girl. I can’t stand her.

I agree with all of the above observations regarding Brad Pitt looking like whatever woman he is with at the time. You’d think he’d look more beautiful right now, not so grungy.

I think what she meant by being a “public couple” is that her relationships with Affleck and Pitt were constantly covered by the media, they were always photographed together, and discussed their relationship in interviews. So the relationships in that sense were “public.”
Seems like she’s very happy to have a “private” relationship with Chris Martin — meaning they never go out in public and don’t talk about each other to the media. We know very little about their relationship because they haven’t shared anything.
She might have also been saying that “going public” changed her relationships somehow. That might be true — I have often wondered what a couple must feel like to have their first date splashed all over the cover of a tabloid, or on the Internet the next day. They probably barely know each other and the media calls it a relationship. That must put a lot of pressure on!
I just have to point out Brad Pitt was obviously filming 7 years in Tibet at the time so he looks like that character. Alot of people show a pic of him with hair dyed black for Jesse James to state he changed to look like Angie. People need to get over it he is an actor. And he changes his look for every film he does.

It is good to see actress like Gwenneth and Nicole Kidman making movies again, Gwenneth Palthrow is one of the best actress aroound. Instead of being bombarded by lousy actress like Jennifer Aniston who has been putting out bomb after bomb. Sandra Bullock is also one of the worse actresses around, before Blindside all of her movies stank!
well, she also may be returning to the limelight b/c her kids are a bit older-when they are babies and toddlers, it’s especially hard, in my experience. you can do more as they get older.

I loved 7 yrs in Tibet- such a beautiful and poignant movie! By the way, Brad was playing a REAL PERSON in that movie and in The Assassination of Jesse James…he didn’t go to movie set & say- make me look like my girlfriend (s)! Since gywnth was playing a FICTIONAL character she MIGHT have copied Brad’s, but Angie was just being pregnant w/ Shiloh & would have had to use vegetables dye to “match” Brad. It was ridiculous that Gwyneth Paltrow beat Cate Blanchett for best actress that year. “Elizabeth” was a much better movie and a far stronger performance. The latter still holds up today when you rewatch it, whereas “Shakespeare in Love” seems a bit dated and Paltrow is just myeh in it.

I remembered a few years back an interview with Vanessa Paradis people saying that at first when she met Depp, the press was all over them.
I remembered her saying to them to STFU, and even giving the finger, whic is something Depp and her have done when phrographer are often picturering them.
Then they moved in that small village in southern france and Johnny even said that it was the only way to get some privacy he will never enjoy in the US or in Paris.
According the reporter, the couple Depp & Paradis have a very strict modus operandi to conduct an interview. Reporters are asked to sign and apply to this code before the interview which is supposed to last 30 minutes, with no mention whatsoever about their kids if they specifically asked for it befirehand, which they often do.
They also said years ago that they will sue any magazine that show their children (vanessa has sued magazines fir showing her nude on the beach or mentioning where her kids go to school) saying that they live a quiet life in that village where their children go to school on foot and where the locals are like ione big family as Depp can even be seen going to a local cafe to have a drink and chat with its neighbours who are peasants, something again, he admitted he wouldn’t be able to do in the US.

There are many factors to the overexposure of Brangelina but the major one is the Pitt factor, and this I don’t get. Any woman he hooks up with and suddenly they are the golden couple.
I would like it explained why Pitt is so special. There are so many hotter actors but majority goes crazy for Pitt. The only time I felt he was genuinely hot was in Troy on set.
When he’s out, he either looks feminine or douchey, like he’s trying too hard. On top of that he looks and sounds dumb as a rock. Not really attractive.
That is how I remember every pic of Paltrow with Brad. Her “I am too cool and good for the Sexiest Man Alive” look. I always found her dorky and homely with no sex appeal what-so-ever.

So many actresses in their twenties seem obsessed with nabbing a high-profile boyfriend/husband as a final status symbol — it’s the Hollywood chick’s version of Tracy Jordan’s EGOT.
Then they wake up and find they’re in their mid-30s and they’ve spent some of the most potentially interesting years of their artistic careers playing house with some schmo, while all the good parts now go to their replacements.

@DD: I’ve wondered that, too. He’s just not that interesting. And while I’ve certainly enjoyed some of his movies, there are plenty of actors out there who are far more talented, and whose intellect surpasses Pitt’s by a country mile.

Seriously some of you need to get over your bitter aniston comebacks and just accept that people have different opinions that may have nothing to do with the unholy trinity.
I never found BP bone structure that special nor that handsome. And for me Jolie at her best is more beautiful than he is handsome anyway and she sounds smarter, more interesting and with more charisma too.
But I always found him to have a great body, great smile and eyes, that sexy swagger, charm like anti vulgar and anti gross personality. He doesn’t strike me as someone who is arrogant, controlling (i sense that about Cruise, Gibson), who will beat up or yell to a woman. And mainly i always admirred the fact that unlike many men he didn’t necessary went always for the ‘model’ type or extreme beautiful one. Except for the skinny genre, he doesn’t have a physical type.
He seems overall a nice guy. In that prospect i always find him to have that tolerance towards averageness compared to many others who only date beauty queens, hence he always appeared to me as having less ego than most, more interested in a woman’s overal and personality than pure physical beauty.
Because of all of these, his attractiveness factor may be even more powerful than men who only have sheer physical beauty like Mel Gibson used to have, yet less attractive in my eyes because of his cold personality.
I would have admitted about the Pitt factor if anyone he went with had the same effect on the masses and reached the same star magnitude as Jolie did.
However, Jolie’s star status was never even reached by Pitt Internationally wise. Pitt was part of a very handful club led by Tom Cruise but never the number one until recently when he formed the Brangelina power couple.
Jolie is the number one female in her generation and i beleive she was on her way to become it when they met. She benefitted from the semi retreat of julia as the number one female star, just like Julia took it from Jodie Foster who was briefly the queen Of Hollywood in the late eighties and early 90’s.
I beleive that it’s the Pitt AND Jolie factor likewise and in the same proportion that makes it a deadly combination because they were both at some point presented as the most sexiest or beautiful in their respective gender and reached their peak at the same time, Pitt dethroning Cruise when he went with Jolie and after Cruise and his weird antics threw him from his pedestal as the King of Hollywood.
Before that Pitt and Aniston, Pitt with Thandie, Pitt with juliet, Pitt with Gwyneth were never, ever as great as Cruise and Kidman.
Bar the brief triangle with Robin givens and Mike Tyson, he was behind the most talked about power couple : Cruise and Kidman and before that Gere and Crawford.
Today, i even beleive that if both parts ways, Jolie’s aura may still be the biggest one, mainly because of age and because she has less competition to find someone to fill her large shoes than Pitt has because he doesn’t play the frontrunner anymore.

People sure do assume a lot about celebrities just from looking at pictures of them and believing the crap their publicists (the ones with college degrees) have them memorize for interviews.

At some point, her “people” told her to ditch the stories about her knife collection, stop humping her boyfriends in public, date someone with star power and respect (the anti-Billy Bob), and get involved in some sort of humanitarian work. They figured, if she took enough pictures frowning with empathy at refugees, people would eventually forget that she married Jonny Lee Miller in a t-shirt smeared with his blood, and made out with her brother at the Oscars.
And they were right.
1. I remember hating gwyneth for being an overrated snob in the 90s and hoping others would figure it out, but now that they have I feel a bit bad for her. She’s she seems kind of sad and pathetic.
2. I don’t like Gwyneth, but to this day I think she was the love of Brad Pitt’s life, much more than Jennifer or Angelina.
nnn: You don’t have fame thrust upon you unless you are in a business in which fame does nothing to help your career or you’re a part of some major event (Baby Jessica, Bill Gates, Stephen Hawking).
Actors who are super celebrities didn’t get there by chance. Angelina, Brad and Jennifer all reached superstardom after the whole debacle and they ALL kept it going by doing interviews and photospreads and saturating the media with their presence.
You’ve proved my point actually with Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis. They didn’t want the attention or the celebrity so they moved away. If actors don’t want to be celebrities, it’s really not that hard. They don’t talk about their private lives or their children to the media like some other actors do. Another prime example of this is Meryl Streep. Brilliant actress. I don’t know much of anything about her private life. A younger woman would be Cate Blanchett. I don’t know if she’s married, divorced-I’m aware that she has at least one kid but I don’t immediately associate her with her family. I associate her with her roles. Shouldn’t that be how the public relates to actors?
Gwyneth figured that out and seems to be running with it.

I really tried hard to not believe the rumors about Gwyneth because I wanted to like her (felt she was probably misunderstood), but I watched that “Spain…On The Road Again” program with her and Mario Batali and whew, she definitely has a stick up her rear.
I’m still drawn to stories about her because she’s somehow entertaining.

He may have gotten that haircut for a film, but over the years has consistently changed his style, and sort of even his persona, every time he got together with a new woman – who always had that style long before and long after him. In my opinion, he’s the one who takes on the new look. I find it kind of funny.
I have to LOL at Gwenyth trying to tell us she had to work hard for everything by saying her dad didn’t just give her cash. No, instead he just used his connections to get her acting roles! I don’t think she’s a bad actress who didn’t deserve any work, but I also don’t think she ever struggled and worked a crappy job while doing auditions and hoping to land any role. A lot of doors were opened for her simply because of who her parents were, but I doubt she’d ever say as much.
I respect that she wants to keep things private between her and her husband but I still find it odd to not ever see them at red carpet events. I think it’s a show of support to go and I doubt it would enfringe on their privacy that much. It still seems to me that they lead separate lives …
Anyone who doesn’t think Gwyneth isn’t a stuck up beotch hasn’t read Goop her blog. I have to agree with LA Pitt was never hotter than in Fight Club. Although in Legends and Interview he was painfully beautiful in Fight Club his body and physicality whew. He’s one of those actors who is always defined by his relationships. I loved him with Juliette Lewis hated him with Gwyeneth and Jen. Now that he’s with Angie,again I find him lovable. He’s obviously losing his pretty boy looks but that has helped him to deepen his work. His movies have been so much better in the last few years. Also I do find the fact that he is helping so many people in NOLA sexy. Also the fact that he spends so much time with his children without calling it babysitting (I’m talking to you Ben).
Even in those pics, Affleck looks like a cheater. Gwyneth didnt change much… Brad does do the same hairstyle, same clothing style etc….
Gwyneth was smart enough to dump Affleck when she realized what a loser he was, she’s never said nice things about Ben probably because there’s nothing nice to say but she’s always said good things about Brad P

Funny you say that since SHE was the one that cheated .Ben was supposed to be her date for the Oscars and he found out she left with Scott speedman that night .Ben was the one that left her not the other way around.

I don’t find it odd to not see them on RC together but I do find it odd to not ever see them together anywhere. She’s regularly papped – alone, with kids, with friends but almost never with her husband. That level of “privacy” is only achievable when people are living separate lifes.

WRONG!!! If she was the love of his life at the time she cheated on him then he would have forgiven her when she asked him to and they would have married and lived happily ever after.
But when she cheated on him, he dropped her like a hot, skinny potato, walked away and never looked back. You don’t do that to the “love of your life” now, do you?
I love Gwynnie but the girl has cheated on many of the men in her life. I think she just becomes bored with them before they can get bored with her. Not trying to be a psychoDr.Drew but I think that’s why she’s staying with Martin after he cheated on her with Kate Bosworth. She doesn’t want people to think she’s a loser and that a man doesn’t want her. She will never leave Chris Martin . . . EVER!! Mark my words.
Why is she talking about her exs from 12 years ago? I found out that her PR rep is Stephen Huvane. So, I’m wondering if she is trying to grab some attention to sell her new movie? Hey, bringing up the exs and boyfriends works for Jennifer and Chelsea Handler, but I never thought Gwyneth would take this route, too. I bet she’s desperate for her new movie to be a hit.

It’s not to be too harsh, the pic of her w/ pitt is good but to me she is just like MANY girls I went to college with, only Gwynnie doesnt have that relatable quality, so she is lost on me. I liked the indie movie she did with that big cast like jennifer jason leigh wrote it I think, but other than that she was/is/ will be snoozeville to me.
I just watched her special on herself on E! All about how she stuggled to the top and Speilberg saying she was like his daughter. She married the hubby after a year(?)and she was 4 months pregnant. Wonder if she knew they were going to put that in the Saint Gwyneth show.
I think she married quick, like many people do after an emotional shock caused by a close one’s death.
Her father died and she married quick afterwards which is a typical move people do after someone close to them die.
Death when it strikes someone close often remind us of our own vulnerability and that life is short making us reevaluate priorities and options as we want to live it to the fullest for now on.
Wow… seeing that pic of Gwyneth and Brad brought a lot of memories of my junior high years; I had a pal who was obsessed with Brad Pitt and we were pretending she was Gwyneth since she was blonde too, time sure does fly. I used to think it was SO cool that they had the same hairdo, now I look at that pic and I think that’s one of the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen.

Caught a few episodes and I agree; she was a total pill. Buuutt… she also seemed hungover, so I’m- tentatively- giving her a pass. (Now that I’m in my thirties, I get pretty surly the day after.)
