Eva Mendes Calvin Klein ad banned for being too racy

I have clearly been living in New York for too long. I’ve just become jaded and unable to be shocked. Because I just watched Eva Mendes’ new advertisement for Calvin Klein’s Secret Obsession and didn’t think anything of it. But apparently the ad is so racy that it’s been banned from American television. There is a teeny bitof nipple at a few points, but my eyes must be getting worse because I didn’t see anything all that offensive. But I guess it’s still just way too shocking for any of us to even think about viewing.

What a waste. Spoilsport American TV network bosses have banned this advert featuring EVA MENDES for being TOO sexy. In the steamy commercial for Calvin Klein’s Secret Obsession perfume, the gorgeous actress writhes topless on a bed.

Eva admitted she was “thrilled” that the ad was considered too saucy for US broadcast. Eva, 33, said: “I love it. That means the ads are totally Calvin, totally provocative and a little controversial.” She continued: “In the commercial you’ll see me rolling around in bed a lot, that’s basically all I do. I have been a fan of Calvin Klein’s Obsession ads since I can remember.” She added: “I love to feel super-feminine. I love dresses and skirts and dislike jeans. I think what makes a woman sexy is confidence.”

Creative Director of the advert Fabien Baron said: “This country really needs a new president — this country is so messed up. It’s such a joke and it’s quite upsetting, frankly, how hypocritical this country has become. It’s OK for children to see people killed by guns? Spreading a little love right now would be a good idea. She is being a little sexy, but they are not provocative.”

[From The Sun]

While I’d totally agree that this country needs a new president, I seriously doubt George Bush had much to do with the banning of these ads. A new head of the FCC would be nice. This has a lot more to do with some overly-restrictive government body that’s had nothing to do since Nipplegate officially wrapped up a few weeks ago.

I can kind of understand why this shouldn’t be shown on Nickelodeon and maybe during certain hours where young children are most likely to be watching television. But I don’t think it’s that sensationally raunchy that it needs to be banned altogether.

Here is the video; it’s obviously sorta SFW.

I saw some nipple. But then again, Eva Mendes is my total number one girl crush and I am completely in love with her, so I’m perverted like that and was TOTALLY looking for it.

Thanks for the heads up. LOL.

Most of it is blurry, though. Seems fairly tame to me, too, except for that two seconds of nipple.

  2. Anne says:

    I don’t get her appeal.

It would probably play on late night tv anyway so what’s the big deal?

I do think though that the raciness and subsequent controversy is contrived by Klein’s ad company, it will be all over the internet and the target market will see it before the day’s out. Mission accomplished without having air on tv and no need to pay for the ad spots.

  3. geronimo says:

My sympathy is 100% with the creative director. It’s sensual, not in the least provocative. I don’t understand what shocks here, really don’t.

  4. Hollz says:

The only thing wrong with it is that it shows her nipple- there are far worst ads out there- take a look at the Tag one, where the girl is like, pole dancing in her shower. If this didn’t have her nip showing, it would be fine- even during child viewing hours- at least going by what I see on kids channels already (body wash ads are usually the worst offenders, but perfumes are pretty bad as well.

  5. lunachick says:

Ridiculous how the FCC finds sensual images of a woman offensive, when shows like “24” glorify torture in prime time (enough so that the GITMO goons apparently use the show for inspiration.)

Makes no sense to me, at all.

  6. francesca says:

censorship is just totally useless smtms, I don’t see anything wrong with this ad…but then again it seems like showing up a nipple is sorta of a crime (janet jackson anybody?)…even though most of the stars in hollywood have fleshed their crouches a million times! 😕

  7. Anne says:

I assert it was never going to show on tv anyway, the ad complany knew this when they created it.

It is a lovely ad, showing a woman’s body, not derogatory in anyway, pretty stupid controversy but they knew it wouldn’t get approval and now we are all talking about Klein’s ‘new’ fragrance online after we’ve watched the ad.

  8. Kristin says:

What is wrong with society? I thought the human body was natural and beautiful. Why are we constantly afraid to show it?

  9. girl says:

I am a very conservative person but seriously, is this any worse than those Girls Gone Wild commercials?

Besides, one of my kids was just watching Full House and Kimmie just called Mr. Tanner “teabag”. Sounds much worse to me than seeing a bit of nipple.

But then I am one of those ka-RAzEE mothers that breastfeeds in public. Nipples bother me not.

  10. CelebitchyFAN says:

JayBird, you have been living in NY too long! While I believe that was a beautiful commercial (mostly because of my girl crush on Eva, like a previous reader) that was WAY not appropriate for TV. There wasn’t just a little nipple in there, that was a fully breast. A little much for prime time, I do believe.

  11. momgeek says:

It’s not like she sat up and spread her legs. I was more disturbed about the way she was rolling around and writhing on the bed than I was about her breast.

I’d rather see the FCC making some of the ultra-violent shows tone it down than yanking an ad for showing a breast. Why do we keep perpetuating the notion that our bodies are icky? 🙄

  12. Victoria says:

So Silly and ridiculous!!! I did not find it any more sexist than any thing else on prime time television showing the bottoms and sides of women in the shower and in the bed. Plus I agree with above that George Bush had anything to do with pulling the ad. Stupid!! Calvin Klein may knew he was on the edge of this one, but not any more than when he produced Brooke Sheilds years ago saying ” nothing comes between me and my Calvin Klein’s”. THAT really made people stand up and scream. In fact it went off the air for about two weeks. AND out of a couple of magazines for awhile. So, considering this 2008, everyone needs to get over it, and just show the commercial after 9:00pm. That would probably solve the children issue. She is beautiful, so let it run baby!!

  13. JoGirl says:

Plus, if the networks cared that much, it would have been so easy for CC to edit out those two seconds of breastiness, anyway.

    Ridiculous!

  14. vdantev says:

Thanks to all those timid, conservative bible-lickers out there who firmly believe that if little Johnny sees nipple, he’ll go on a five state killing spree.

    *golfer’s clap*

  15. Scott F. says:

I’m not getting the connection between this and violent TV. Every time there’s an argument about nudity, someone has to bring up violence.

Personally, I don’t see how you can be pro nudity and anti-violence. I agree that nudity is natural, and don’t see a problem with it. Well, so is violence. It happens in nature every day. Ever watch animal planet?

  16. vdantev says:

But we’re not animals Scott- we have the higher brain functions and don’t just operate on instinct. Big difference. Edit enough videos made by Christians about how pornography is bad and creates serial killers and any visual of women or men naked should be counted as pornography and you’ll begin to make the connection some people have.

  17. Scott F. says:

Dante – you were raised Catholic weren’t you? I’m just guessing a Priest must be involved in anything that can bring out such ridiculous amounts of hatred for Christianity. You think because you hate a majority instead of a minority that it makes you any less a bigot?

And yes, we’re not animals. We wear clothes in public, don’t we? We don’t just run around naked, fornicating each other at the drop of a hat, do we? “we have the higher brain functions and don’t just operate on instinct.”

Kinda moots your point about nudity being alright and violence not, huh? After all, according to you, we’re not animals. So cover yourself up in a public ad campaign.

  18. Snowblood says:

Scott, I, too have what you’ve alled “ridiculous amounts of hatred for Christianity,” yet I wasn’t raised Catholic nor was molested by any member of any clergy, as you’re insinuating above-post. However, Dante just looks like a normal person to me, with perfectly normal “amounts of hatred” for religion. Yet you are directly calling him/her a bigot. That’s an untrue and libelous accusation, in my observing eyes anyway.

“When you have no basis for an argument, abuse the plaintiff.” ~ Cicero

Religion isn’t for everyone, Scott. Neither, apparantly, is atheism/agnosticism.

  19. bobafet says:

    dang. The video is gone.

  20. Scott F. says:

I never said he had to become a Christian, but he’s routinely derogatory about Christians and Christianity. Yes, that makes him a bigot.

If I went around calling a Muslims ‘Koran Lickers’ I would be banned from this site without a second thought, wouldn’t I? He only gets away with it because it’s a ‘majority religion’ in the West.

There is no such thing as a ‘normal amount of hatred’. Hating anyone based solely on their religious beliefs, ethnicity, nationality, ect. makes you a bigot.

  21. lunachick says:

    Scott,

    Civilized adult humans have sex.

Civilized adult humans do *not* commit extreme acts of violence as promoted on many “escapist” TV shows.

So, where are boundaries being broken on network TV? At the suggestion that a topless Eva Mendes is sexy? Or that torture and violent crime are glamorous?

  22. Christina X says:

“I think what makes women feel sexy is confidence”

How many times is that going to be repeated by these sex icons? I swear I must have heard that MILLIONS of times.

And if by “confidence” you mean not being able to keep your clothes on, I agree. Posing nude for Playboy’s fine, shooting nude scenes is fine, but when you’ve built your career around how good you look nude and your own naked ass is advertised on other websites, you’re basically nothing but body parts.

The video’s no longer available, but I’m going to guess it’s just a cliche of every other “sexy” commercial.

  23. Just Me says:

ok i’m not saying this affended me or anything but why are you guys so suprised this cant be shown on television…as somebody previously stated that wasnt “a little bit of nipple” you could see her entire boob!

if somebody is caught on camera on a reality show or talk show with their breast(s) exposed they blur it out so why would you think it would be ok in a commercial?

    watch it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjmcajhA-1g

  24. candyass says:

I am not christian and I wouldn’t want to see that on t.v. I guess you can call me a prude but if I want to go see a boob I will go rent a porn. I agree with Just Me as well. I am surprised the producers didn’t think this would be a problem.

  25. candyass says:

And I am sorry but to blame this on Christians is completely ignorant and childish! I can guarantee their are non-religious people out their who would not want this to be on t.v. vdantev I guess you better not celebrate Christmas, Easter, Valentines, St. Patrick’s Day or believe in marriage because those all stem from Christianity.

  26. Scott F. says:

“Civilized adult humans do *not* commit extreme acts of violence as promoted on many “escapist” TV shows.”

Civilized adult humans most certainly do my dear. I notice you specifically mentioned ’24’ earlier – there you go. You’re free today because generations of men and women have offered swift and blinding violence against anyone that would harm you or threaten your freedom.

What exactly do you think a standing army is for? Polishing buttons and playing schnazzy numbers on those trumpets? We are trained to kill people – that is our job. All those other countries with armies? Yeah, they’re trained to kill everyone else too. You can try to hide violence from your kids, but just like sex, they’ll see the world for what it is eventually. “People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.” – George Orwell

  27. vdantev says:

Scott, too bad leaping to conclusions isn’t a paying job or you’d be a the rich*st man in the world.

I was not raised Catholic (and how the HELL that figured into your ‘logic’ a term I’m using VERY LOOSELY here I’ll never know), and the truth never has set well with the the bible-humping crowd. I edit video as a side job and I never discriminate on content, source material etc. I just take the raw feed, follow the client’s wishes and churn out the product. That doesn’t mean I can’t form my own opinions about the people I work for past or present.

The only hatred I see is vomiting out of that warped mind of yours and through your keyboard and onto the screen for all to see.

And if I am derogatory toward Christians, it’s because there’s much in my opinion to be derogatory about. And if you’re the big Christian man of God and defender of the holy faith as your trying to foist upon us- it’s your DUTY to forgive me. If you don’t- then you’re not in the right either.

Game- set- match- thanks for playing.

  28. Anne says:

Hehehe…’bible-humping’ sorry…Is that a typo, funny one that.

More love less war I say. Just because this world has thousands of wars going on at any time doesn’t make it right.

  29. Judy says:

Who wants to see her naked?????/ LOl

  30. Trashaddict says:

Duh Scott, since when has nudity in and of itself harmed anybody. Violence has harmed so many.
Yes, they’re both part of the human repertoire, but the aftereffects are so much different. And the mode of thinking that “we just can’t help it, just the way things are” seems to be responsible for a lot of problems in the world currently. As any mother of a 4 year old child knows, a person can control their behavior. But it does take work and understanding from that person and the others around her or him
Of course our kids will see violence but we don’t have to endorse violence for violence’s sake only!

  31. Scott F. says:

Buddy, you’d better take a class on Christianity before going off on rants like that. I’m not required to forgive you for anything, neither is any other Christian. Forgiveness is Christ’s deal, and he’ll forgive anyone for anything if they truly repent, but we’re not required to live up to that standard.

In fact, it’s kinda his job to forgive us lowly mortals for our shortcomings. It would be nice if we could live up to his standard, but he was divine and we’re not, and that’s accepted from day one if you’re a true Christian. So we’re gonna screw up, and that’s alright.

You know what makes you a bigot? The fact that you’re judging an entire group based on the actions of a very vocal and judgmental minority. Most Christians are rational, caring, compassionate people, who don’t feel the need to foist their beliefs on those unwilling to receive them.

I don’t dislike you because you’re an atheist (I’m assuming), I dislike you because you’re being just as judgmental and condescending as the people you’re pissed off at.

This is the classic fallacy with atheist anger: your argument is that we’re bad because we don’t accept your rights to your own beliefs, try to force our beliefs on you, call you stupid or shortsighted, ect. So how do you respond? By not accepting our right to our beliefs, trying to force your beliefs on us, and calling us stupid for believing in a ‘flying spaghetti monster in the sky’.

Trashaddict – you’re joking right? “When has nudity hurt our society.”

You’re right, it hasn’t. But when has watching Friday the 13th caused someone to move to a summer camp and start hacking up horny coeds?

The prude argument against nudity is that it encourages kids to become sexually active too early. Well, isn’t that the anti-violence argument in a nutshell too? If they see it, they’ll do it?

We were having wars 5000 years BEFORE television was invented. Therefore, something tells me TV isn’t the problem – human nature is.

  32. vdantev says:

37 “Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.
