Matt Damon says most psychics are scam artists

I love Matt Damon, to the point where I felt like Sammie was stepping on my toes a little when she covered a story on the guy yesterday. There’s a new story on Damon today, so no worries. That medium psychic movie that Damon starred in as some kind of favor to Clint Eastwood, Hereafter, is coming out in the UK at the end of this month, so he’s still doing press for it. Damon has hinted in the past that he’s not on board with the notion of more than five senses, although he’s tried to sound open to the idea for the sake of the film. He goes a little further with his thoughts on the supernatural in this latest interview. Matt claims that most psychics are “charlatans” and admits he didn’t consult one for his role.

Matt Damon has described psychics as “charlatans” following his work on Clint Eastwood’s supernatural drama Hereafter.

Damon plays a psychic in the film, but claimed that he refused to meet with any actual practitioners during his research for the role.

“Had I found a good one I would have,” Damon told Bang Showbiz. “What I was worried about was that it was just going to take me down this rabbit hole of charlatans.

“I think a large part of that space is occupied by pretenders, which is not to say there aren’t people out there who are genuinely touched in some way,” the actor explained.

Damon claimed that he did however talk with Martin Sheen in preparation for Hereafter, due to Sheen’s claim to have had a near-death experience after suffering a heart attack.

“He told me his incredible story one day when we were working on The Departed together,” Damon added, suggesting that he wasn’t a complete cynic.

Another day, another reason to fawn on Matt Damon. I took a death and dying class in college, and we had a lecture from a man who had gone through a near death experience. I still remember that day vividly as it was one of the most impressive and convincing personal stories I’d ever heard. (The details were very similar to the stories told in books by Kenneth Ring on NDEs.) I later learned more about the human brain, along with the detail that the brain is flood with neurochemicals when we die, and that a lack of oxygen can cause a person to see a “tunnel” with a “light” at the end of it, similar to stories about heaven. It’s reassuring to hear that the transition won’t be unpleasant, wherever we end up when it’s all over.

As for Damon’s claim that most psychics and mediums are charlatans, I have to agree. It’s also telling that he said that people could be “touched,” since “touched” is a euphemism to “not all there.” (Although it’s possible his comments were translated to Brit-speak.) Damon doesn’t believe in the supernatural, but he’ll do what he has to do to talk up his films.

It’s only moderately related, but I’d like to also point out that it was so ripe on RHOBH this week that Kyle consulted a psychic after all she went through with Camille’s “psychic” at that dinner party from hell. She’s so much more like Camille than she’s willing to admit.

Here’s Damon on the set of “We Bought a Zoo” yesterday, with costar Thomas Haden, in LA. He’s looking good but he needs a haircut! Included are some gratuitous photos of him eating celery.

Not ‘most’ all, all of them are total charlatans.

  2. Shay says:

He isn’t wrong. It isn’t most. All psychics are scam artists. They are proficient at sizing up the individual, always tend to rely on the answers of the individual, like Edward does. If, for example, John Edward was so great, then why does he always stop at an initial and wait for the audience to fill the rest in? I feel sorry for people who buy books, tapes, etc and make these manipulators millionaires.

  3. embertine says:

“Most”. How very diplomatic. I’d love to be good at cold reading; need to brush up on my social skills first though, I think.

  4. Ruby says:

    Really? No s** t

  5. Megatrona says:

A very good psychic is extremely good at reading people’s body language conbined with some energy reading, with that and of course the gift of words they can fool people
There are some that do use this gifts more for therapeutic ends, also using cards as tools to work with the people to get to know themselves better, that being said those are very rare

Any person that claims they can tell you the future is always full of crap

  6. tapioca says:

That statement would suggest that he believes there are some genuine psychics – which would suggest that he’s a numpty. Did Psych and The Mentalist and The Prestige teach us nothing?!

  7. Tazina says:

I had one tell me my father-in-law was going to drop dead of a heart attack. And darned if he didn’t do just that. However, it was probably just a lucky guess.

“Matt claims that most psychics are “charlatans”.

OMG, that’s exactly what my psychic said! Matt must be psychic!

    (Most water is wet)

In the second picture, it looks like Octomom is standing behind him.

  10. Liana says:

… and in other news, water is wet.

Matt Damon can do now wrong, and the Celebitchy posts on him are the best imo. So to defend the amazingness that is Matt Damon, I think him saying ‘most’ not ‘all’, was just his way of being polite and diplomatic. *sigh* Gotta love him.
Also, Celebitchy, I took a class in my undergrad that was titled: death and the afterlife, and it had a similar discussion on the one your class had. My favourite line in this post was: “It’s reassuring to hear that the transition won’t be unpleasant, wherever we end up when it’s all over.” Very well said and a wonderful way of viewing it.

  12. Roma says:

Mmm… Simon Baker. Wait, we were talking about the Mentalist right?

  13. ViktoryGin says:

Hmmm…I think that most people have a rather skewed idea of what psychics can do, and ufortunately the quacks in the mainstream don’t make it any easier. There are some people who have the evolved gift to tap into forces particularly with divintory techiques and give info regarding trends NOT specfic events (and this has to do with how time is reconceptualized in various metaphysical practices), but there aren’t the ones who are selling out seminars and getting their own TV shows. As someone who’s into the metaphysics subculture. The legit psychics come word of mouth, are few and far between (truly), and don’t charge you an arm and a leg. And if you are truly into metaphysical practices and have sufficient self-knowledge, you can spot the ones who are full of shit a mile away.

  14. cara says:

Why is his opinion of such importance???

And where’s his follow-up to Good Will Hunting?? You’d think if he wrote that, there’d be more, no?

On a side, he needs to hit the gym.

(and I have psychic premonitions constantly that come into fruitation,as I’m sure many of you do as well)

    He’s an Idiot.

@ViktoryGin….you’re so right. I’ve had phoney’s refuse to give me a reading. PPl like those horrible Sylvia brown and john edwards weirdo’s, give me the hibijeebee’s.

  15. Bodhi says:

@cara ~ He is doing press for a movie that is about a psychic & he was asked his opinion. How is he an idiot for answering a questions that he was asked?

He is filming a movie. Given his past willingness to get super fit or gain a bunch a weight for a role, chances are his character is supposed to look the way he does. Which, btw, is fine.

  16. cara says:

    @ Bodhi, well…ok.

first off, (and I’m not a Palin fan) BUT his derogatory remarks about women in office were irresponsible (and I know you remember as his remarks were ALL over this site when said). Second, if you are a woman, you should be offended as us women, Especially mother’s, DO have the ability to tap into our subconsious thus our psychic minds. How many mother’s here have been separated from their kid, maybe even by a state, and yet you knew something was wrong w/your kid, which turned out to be true. Or dreamnt of an old friend, last heard from decades ago, only to wake to their calling on the phone?

This man isn’t as well rounded, mentally or intellectually as he’d like himself AND us to believe.

HOPEfully, his own daughter’s will show him how very wrong he is.

I think most people are intuitive and have had experiences outside the realm of what considered normal. I just don’t understand paying someone to tell you something you can usually figure out on your own.

  21. Mshuffleupagus says:

    @cara

I don’t believe in psychics. Have I betrayed my vagina?

  22. cara says:

    @Mshufflepagus ^^^ have you children?

Does it bother you that I said what I did, that women have an uncanny ability to tap into the subconsious? Because, my saying that is of no harm to you.

(and the only way you’d betray your private is if it get’s tingly over mr. Matty D! LOL 😉 )

now because my psychic abilities tell me some here just abhor whatever it is that I have to say, thus want to argue (which, I’m not into), so I’ll inform now….I drank too much coffee, must run it off and start my day. Treadmill here I come!

One love and many blessings 2U all!

  23. Dizzybenny says:

HA!!I knew he was going to say that!
Thank youuuu alllll now go and buy my books and call my phone line. 😛

  24. YAY says:

    @Mshuffleupagus – haha LOVE IT! 🙂

@cara – coincidences occure all the time, it’s just hard for people to wrap their heads around them.

  25. janie says:

    cara,
there is a difference bw being tuned in and having premonitions about people close to you and having it be a business where you make money off of total strangers.
i have had many a strange encounter regarding loved ones, but i dont have a 1800 number.

  26. Crash2GO2 says:

Please! There are enough issues between the sexes to cause trouble! Please don’t go inventing silly ones like ‘men don’t appreciate our phychic abilities’. 🙄

    Thank you.

  27. Kim says:

Can he please tell this to that scary Alison woman who was on RHOBH who thinks she is psychic!

Yes some people can read others better and have better instincts they tap into. We all have a little “psyshic” in us but no one can predict/see EVERYTHING in the future.

  28. lucy2 says:

I love Matt, such a good actor and seems like a decent guy too.
Totally agree about John Edwards and the like – I’ve seen a number of them work the same way, throwing stuff out there until the audience bites, but for those grieving or looking for answers, it’s easy to believe I guess. It’s just a shame people often pay a lot of money for it.

I agree with the “most” part of his comment though – I think there are a very small number of people who have some sort of ability beyond the normal, but they’re not the ones out there promoting books, speaking tours, readings, and TV shows.

  29. kelly says:

Virtually everyone has had some sort of spooky premonition or inexplicable contact etc, including myself, but I don’t think any of that is outside nature. It makes sense to think we have some sort of collective subconscious connection. I’ve even tried the remote viewing thing with friends, and holy shit, it actually worked, which was absolutely gobsmacking.

Psychics are bullshit, though. My pet hate are the TV psychics who pretend to speak to dead relatives. I’d like to boil all those shameless turds in oil.

  30. H26 says:

A close friend of my maternal grandmother’s used to read tea leaves. My grandma was visiting her with some other friends and one of the other people there convinced this lady to do a reading for her. My grandma said during the reading her friend looked at the person getting the reading and said very serously “stay away from water this weekend.” The person getting the reading laughed it off and she and her husband went out on their boat that weekend, had some type of accident and drowned!!

My grandma’s friend never did tea leaves on anyone again. My grandma wasn’t one to tell tall tales so I believe the story. Which just makes the point anyone with real abilities isn’t running around profiting off it and may view it more as a curse.

  31. Rose says:

Well said Crash! I DO have children, but hey, I’m not psychic or a bullshitter.

  32. filthycute says:

He looks like a chubby lezbian from Poland.

  33. Bodhi says:

    ^^ Ahahahahaha!

  34. GradStudentEatingHotPockets says:

There is a group that is willing to test people who claim to be psychics…they use independent scientists to test the psychics. If the psychic is proven to be “real” then they will get 2 MILLION DOLLARS.

Guess what? None of the psychics will do it. They say you have to “believe” in them for it to work and other bullshit. I wish I could remember the name of the group…but man, it’s awesome.

It’s awesome especially since Sylvia Browne, John Edwards, Allison Dubois, etc REFUSE to do it…and they’ve refused to do it when asked on live television by the guy too! Ha.

  35. MrsOdie2 says:

I believe in the collective unconscious and that some people are more attuned to it than others. However, no one can tell you the future. It doesn’t exist.

  36. BELLE EPOCH says:

WOW! I’m amazed that everyone is anti-psychic!

Someone gave me a consultation with a real one for my birthday. I expected exactly nothing. I was wrong!

Although the psychic knew NOTHING about me, he nailed relatives who have passed, my occupation, and family secrets I have told no one. I was crying and absolutely stunned. He was a very nice guy, humble, otherwise normal, not creepy at all – he just has thus gift/curse.

I absolutely believe most of them are liars. You can spot the fake ones because they ask for information. They also can do terrible harm. I know of one who told a mother that her dead daughter hated her and was someplace miserable. Another told a couple their daughter was “still alive and in South America” so they kept searching for a dead girl. Terrible stuff.

Most of them are junk but not all. A friend of my daughter’s “saw” dead people when he was little, but his family beat him when he told them. I really think it’s just a weird talent a few people have.

I don’t understand why people don’t believe it could be true.

P.S. It is not fortunetelling, like predicting the future or picking winning lottery numbers. It’s about people passing into some kind of divine light or life when they die.

  37. roo says:

Mary Roach, who’s a fantastic author in every way, wrote a book about near death and the afterlife and what we know and what’s been studied by science and what’s been shown to be ridiculous and what’s got some truth. It’s called Spook. I recommend all of her books though.

  38. Yasmine says:

@Roo, I have that book! It was pretty interesting. Never thought to check out any other books by the author, will now!

  39. Why didn’t he ask Billy Bob Thornton? His mother is a psychic, a real one, not a fake or a charlatan. She’s nothing at all like Sylvester Stallone’s mom who was a fake and as it happens didn’t know beans about wearing make up either.
