Anne Hathaway in Marni: tragic or cute?

fp_6644744_rij_rio_21_33

These are photos of Anne Hathaway at a press screening of Rio, an animated film where Anne did some voice work. It’s not a premiere, it’s a screening, so there was no need for Anne to get dressed up in her finest or anything. And maybe that’s the problem – this is how Anne puts together a “casual” outfit. I mean… did Rachel Zoe pick this Marni top and bottom out for her? Or is this entirely Anne’s doing? I really, really hate to think that she chose that sweater herself. It’s like a crop-top ‘90s version of something Freddy Krueger would have worn. And the pants might have been cute… in a different situation. Like, without that sweater.

Still, I can’t hate on Anne. She’s beautiful and talented and she lets Rachel Zoe put her in the worst crap, which makes her accessible. I have high hopes for her and James Franco at the Oscars – as hosts, I think they’ll end up surprising us all, and knocking it out of the park. Fingers crossed. Here are some of their cute promos:

  1. Rita says:

Unfortuantely, her little co-stars standing behind her are dressed better than she is. (Luv the muffs on the toucan)

  2. nik says:

Tragic. Ans she is next Catwoman. Please.

  3. clouie says:

    TRAGIQUE. Stylists can be assholes.

  4. brin says:

I’m sorry, I don’t know what she was going for but this look is awful. Anne usually looks great. She should have kept this in her closet (and not hanging close together).

  5. chasingadalia says:

    Really tragic.

  6. merry says:

Beyond tragic. Why does she not say anything to Rachel when she’s trying to clothe her in some hideous sh*t? Like, “Hell no, bitch, you put that stuff on your back instead!”?

  7. Azurea says:

Dissenting voice! I like it — very French.

  8. Tess says:

Love it. Adorable. And I hope she put it together herself sans Zoe.

edit: I don’t like the way Zoe’s usually got her decked out in those gauzy, ethereal, virginal confections.

  9. operagirl says:

Love the shoes. That is all.

  10. melangie says:

terrible outfit & what’s she got around her neck? At first I thought it was opera glasses & then realized that was silly. But not as silly as that necklace…

  11. LunaT says:

Why does anyone use Rachel Zoe anymore? Don’t think I’d let someone all strung out choose my clothes.

The outfit would be cute w/ a diff top. The top should never be worn. Ever.

  12. Kaboom says:

Two out of three pieces work together, one must go.

  13. saintdevil says:

Something a crazy cat lady would pick up in a thrift store on a day of extreme self loathing – but probably more expensive than half of my wardrobe.

    What a waste!

  14. malachais says:

I’ve always found it weird that celebrities “need” someone to style them, I get they need a stylist that knows all of the current trends, etc, but this is just bad. It would have been nice if the sweater/shortpant ensemble would have matched in texture, color, or pattern. I hope Rachel Zoe didn’t pick this out. If la chupacabra did, she was probably pissed at Anne for some reason.

  15. Hautie says:

Nothing better than seeing the “try hard”. And it turning out as tragic as this little get up.

Now had this been an outfit she threw together to run to the store, I wouldn’t have thought twice about it. Everyone makes a store run looking crazy every now and then.

But this was intentional for a red carpet. So it just becomes tragic.

And are those bells on that collar/necklace?

  16. Anguishedcorn says:

    Tragic.

  17. guesty says:

    ummm…tragic. note to anne…ur not in middle school & it’s 2011.

  18. Leigh says:

    Sweater, Yes
    Shoes, Hell Yes

Pants? BURN them, for the love of god BURN them

  19. devilgirl says:

    Fuggo.

  20. manda says:

I do kind of like it, but I would never have the guts to wear it. I like the shoes she is wearing better than what was shown on the runway (flat sandals).

I really like the pants, though. So cute!

  21. Angel says:

    Hahahaha OMG

    No, no, no !

  22. The Truth Fairy says:

    Super cute!

  23. Bodhi says:

For some strange reason I like it too & I’m not at all sure why. The shoes are fab!

  24. albeli says:

    Oh holy mother of…

I like her sandals. But that’s it.

  25. anti says:

    yikes!

  26. DetRiotgirl says:

I like the sweater, hate the necklace, hate the pants and feel neutral about the shoes. So, over all, she’s tragic… As usual. Her hair looks great though!

  27. bluhare says:

If I were famous I would not need a stylist, she says snootily.

How hard is it to put together a casual outfit? I can do it in five minutes.

  28. Solveig says:

    Tragic.

  29. Isa says:

    But, why doesn’t it match?
Why did the seamstress leave those flaps of fabric on the side of the pants?
    Why are they too short?
Why don’t the sleeves on the sweater match the torso?
    So many whys….

  30. lrm says:

i love the pants, and they look sexy with those shoes….
i’d wear the pants as a more bohemian look myself-but the sandals make them sexier…and i can see where she was going-making the mid riff with the sandals sort of a sexy, almost late 50’s siren thing….
but, the striped contrast on the sweater is awful-
a solid colored sweater may have been less hideous.
    i don’t know though-i’d wear a different top altogether….
what kind, i dont know-it would be a tough match admittedly with the shoes and pants. still love them, though.

it’s hard for ‘annie’ to pull off anything non classical, IMO. catwoman will be a feat. she’s beautiful and charismatic, but not exactly sexy.

  31. lrm says:

and, i agree, necklace is not helping matters. a short string of pearls would have been better than that dollar store special, my niece made it for me for xmas, looking thing.

but after looking at the pants again, i’m drooling over them! they rock! they just need a different top. i would so wear those pants—but i realize that not every style is for everyone-doesn’t make it shitty per se…you know?

  32. Cheyenne says:

Did she get dressed in the dark? The whole outfit sucks, including the shoes.

  33. original kate says:

boring. as usual for her. she is just boring.

  34. Zelda says:

Is she braless or just wearing an unsupportive undergarment? Or is it the sweater? Any guesses?
I love her, but this is terrible

  35. DoMaJoReMc says:

Love the shoes, love the sweater, hate her hideous pants and hate her! I’m not sure why, tho. I don’t find her particularly beautiful….I just can’t figure out what the obsession is about her. Sorry, just my opinion……

  36. Franny says:

wheres CB with the RHOBH recap?! ive been waiting all weekend to read all the bitchy comments

  37. gia says:

In all honesty I can’t decide. One second I hate it and think that she looks like she left on pj bottoms…the next I love the look. Who knows?

  38. LittleDeadGirl says:

I hate the necklace. The rest of the outfit may have worked if paired with something else but together it looks awfull … I can’t imagine the context this was put together and she thought “I look so cute!”

  39. mtb says:

She is beautiful, but that outfit is a big, heaping helping of “wrong” with a garnish of “epic fail”.

  40. khaveman says:

At least she looks youthful. Hate the necklace crap.

  41. DogBoy says:

Waist up = Cute. Waist down = tragic.
She always looks good from the waist up.

  42. Belle Epoch says:

    Tragic.

Why can’t these people dress themselves?

  43. Cherry Rose says:

Tragic. Anne is quite pretty, so I don’t get how the hell she would ever let herself put this horrendous outfit on her beautiful body.

  44. beanie says:

    Turrible! I like Anne, too!

  45. Sassy says:

    Uh, um, what.the.fuck? FAIL.

  46. bagladey says:

    Horrible.

  47. blinditemreader says:

I love high fashion but this assortment of items leaves me a bit lost. All are nice on their own but not together.

  48. GatsbyGal says:

Why is the brown of the sleeves different than the brown of the rest of the sweater? And since when do those pants go with that top? And WTF even ARE those pants? A cute skirt would’ve looked a lot better.

  49. Zombie Nurse says:

Particularly tragic, especailly as this is the runway look in its whole (with the exception of the shoes) lifted straight on to Anne. Re-creation of a head-to-toe runway look doesn’t usually look very good as an actual outfit. And if there was a stylist involved- well, that was just lazy then.

  50. Debra says:

She suffers from the same ailment that Elizabeth Vargas used to have. Poor color sense. Something is always a little off.

  51. BooBooBear says:

she looks like an asshole omg wtf

  52. Ron says:

Holy shit that’s bad! Zoe is her stylist btw.

  53. Wilz says:

Awful! I wouldn’t even wear that to the store.

I thought it was a cardinal rule of fashion that you should never wear black and brown together? Or did I just make that up?

  54. Bee says:

I doubt that Rachel Zoe chose this. She’s always very aware of trying to merge fashion with a capital F, and what’s acceptable to the public. And say what you want about Rachel, but she always gets Anne Hathaway, and most of her other clients, on the best dressed list.

  55. Jayna says:

I adore adore adore her, but it is kind of tragic. The sad part is she probably paid a stylist to put that together.

  56. REALIST says:

Yikes!-stripes and polka dots-did she wake up on the wrong side of the bed that morning? Usually she has her act together, technical criticism aside…

  57. Ally says:

This outfit is like a Rorschach test for how much of a fashionista you are.

I love those trousers — I want them. Love the proportions and the dots/stripes combo, and the chunky shoe. Only the texture of the sweater is a bit shrunken-Goodwill-find.

This site explains what I’m talking about very well:
    http://www.manrepeller.com/
It’s about fashion that’s interesting to the point of nuts, but we love it anyway.

  58. I Choose Me says:

The sweater’s not so bad, the shoes are cute but that pants is an eye-sore and has to go.

  59. lori says:

God, why do American’s love to embrace mediocrity?

Plain Jane with a big nose and irritating voice. That is all.

  60. orion70 says:

Tragic, and probably cost a fortune.

  61. Fi says:

That was a bit…ohh look, new promo! *click*

    I’m so easily entertained.

  62. truthzbetta says:

    omg

I didn’t expect that at all. Startlingly fug.

  63. Eileen says:

What exactly is this suppose to be??

  64. crumbcake says:

    Sorry. . . it’s hideous.
But I have never “gotten” the mixing prints style of fashion that seems popular these days. When I was growing up, I slowly learned (painfully) that stripes don’t work with polka dots, you never would mix floral prints with plaids, etc. When I was seven years old, I wore a horizontally striped red, white and blue shirt with a red white and blue plaid skirt (it was the seventies, what else can I say?). I asked my mom if it looked okay, and mom said, “well the colors all match, so it’s okay”. We have a picture of me in that get-up, I remember some of the comments I got that were not so nice. . . I still get mad at my mom for being so clueless. But maybe she was just ahead of her time? How was I to know that several decades later, people would be making crazy ugly combinations of their own and calling it fashion forward?
It looks like Anne got dressed in the dark and just threw on whatever combination of items that she could find in the laundry basket.

  65. Tomas says:

    HID-E-OUS.

  66. sammib says:

Ummm, guys. What planet do you live on? Obviously NOT planet fashion. Mis-matching is SO HOT RIGHT NOW so props to her as she’s pulled it off wickedly and for those of you all “ewww, tops so 90’s” well duh! The 90’s is back babes, Annie is just being well fashion forward. I don’t like her, she’s got a bovine face, but this outfit ROCKS!

  67. STOPGOOP says:

I want to say “cute” cuz I love this gal, but NO. sorry, NO.

  68. anonymous says:

The outfit matches how she looks, how could someone call Anne Hathaway beautiful is beyond me,this actress has a frog face with horse teeth there’s a lot of actress out there who have hit it big with one or two movies and somehow we hitch beautiful to their names but they are just simply plain Janes. What Joan Collins said about actress today is the truth.

  69. crumbcake says:

@sammib–Hi there, Okay I admit that I’m no fashion maven, but sorry, butt ugly is butt ugly no matter how many fashion magazines and designers say otherwise.
Having been around for 40 years, I can tell you with absolute certainty–five, ten years down the road anyone who dresses like this will look at the photographic evidence and be asking themselves, “wtf was I thinking?” just as many of us older people look back at what we wore in the 70’s,80’s and 90’s and are confused because we thought we looked so amazing and fashionable. Anyone remember gauchos and painter paints from the 70’s? Knickers and bubble skirts from the 80’s? Mullet haircuts and super curly perms on men and women in the 80’s? We all thought we so looked hot! LOL

  70. Ron says:

Zoe chooses nearly everything Anne wears to events.

  71. sauvage says:

I’m not a fan of the combination of black and brown. Neither am I a fan of things that JUST DON’T GO TOGETHER!

  72. Ice Bunny says:

This is what happens when stars dress themselves. Fashion schizophrenia in all its freak-show glory. There is NO way Rachel Zoe put together this nightmare ensemble… and she must be pissed!! And whoever thinks this is trendy and edgy and wickedly fashion forward needs to check their brain in for a fashion tune-up. This is hideousness in its purest state.

  73. Aria says:

OMG!!! This outfit is wrong in so many levels….

  74. renai(jrt) says:

horrid.. the shirt too small the pants too ugly and the shoes too high

  75. jaye E says:

I think all the pieces work…just not together. I think RZ was having a bad case of “pregnancy brain” when she put this ensemble together.

  76. dread pirate cuervo says:

Did she lose a bet? Because every piece of this outfit is a FAIL, whether together or separate.

  77. flutters says:

The outfit is a fail but the Oscar promos are very charming.

  78. RHONYC says:

    cute AND smart!

she is recapuring her youthfulness circa ‘the princess diaries’.

    very smart.

    anne doesn’t look a day over 19.

way to stay in demand, girl. 😉

  79. Stubbylove says:

Agreed – fully tragic. I think I tried that outfit on while getting ready for school in 5th grade – realized it was fug and had the sense to change into jeans, leg-warmers and my fav pink fluorescent top.

  80. Hakura says:

General consensus is definitely tragic. I saw someone say that this whole outfit was on the runway? (Things that ‘work’ on the runway definitely don’t work in real life…)

I’d hate to think she picked this out. From her neck up looks great. (This does NOT include whatever the hell that necklace is, though.)

  81. Heather says:

I like it. The pants are very Lagenlook.
