Beyonce’s $5 million engagement ring

Beyonce’s husband Jay-Z is the richest hip hop artist in the world. I tried to google his net worth and received answers that varied from $500 million, or 1/2 a billion, to $940 million, or nearly a billion. Either way, the guy is loaded and can afford a ring worth more than most people in the world can hope to make in a lifetime. Beyonce herself is valued at around $315 million, so between the two of them they can spend obscene amounts of money on jewelry.

Beyonce wore the ring, a flawless 18 carat diamond, to the aptly-named Fashion Rocks on Friday.

All eyes were on Beyoncé Friday night, when, for the first time, the singer publicly displayed her wedding ring on the red carpet for Fashion Rocks at Radio City Music Hall in N.Y.C.

The singer, 27, who secretly married rapper Jay-Z in April, flashed an 18 carat flawless diamond by Lorraine Schwartz, valued at more than $5 million dollars, according to the jeweler.

[From People.com]

These two had a pretty low key wedding and they keep their private life out of the public eye. Beyonce has her own charity while Jay-Z has also done charity work, raising awareness and donating money to Play Pumps International. I think it’s outrageous to spend $5 million on a ring, but it’s not like they’re not giving back, and I suppose it’s relative to these two.

If they’re worth a combined billion, or 1,000 million (and that might be a low estimate) $5 million is just 1/200th of that. It’s still a hell of a lot of money to be sitting on someone’s hand. Beyonce and Jay-Z are not big conservationists – they travel around by private jet, and neither of them is particularly interested in ecological causes notwithstanding Jay-Z’s support of PlayPumps, which brings clean water to the third world.

Sometimes when I see celebrities who are supposedly into the environment carrying around purses worth thousands it makes me wonder what they’re thinking. (*cough* Julia Roberts *cough*) Like natural resources money is a commodity too, and by wasting it on overpriced consumer goods you may as well be driving a gas guzzler. I’m not saying that people shouldn’t be able to spend money as they please, many people think it’s everyone’s right to purchase whatever they like and celebrities are no exception. It’s also relative to how much money someone makes and what may seem expensive to us is not a big deal to someone who’s rich. It just seems hypocritical when eco-conscious celebrities have such overpriced items. It’s like money is different to them, but it could make a huge difference in many people’s lives, just as clean water and a healthy planet can. At least you can’t accuse Beyonce and Jay-Z of being hypocrites, because they’re gladly using their share and flaunting it.

I make an environmental exception for ginormous, beautiful, amazing diamond rings that I WANT. I can has?

  2. Chamalla says:

I’ve eaten smaller candy ring pops.

  3. Baholicious says:

I doubt that is the actual ring, it’s probably a copy (yo, it’s a fugezi!)and the real blood diamond is in a bank vault somewhere.

  4. bros says:

not surprising. of course it had to be huge and over the top bling. i find beyonce tacky and ostentatious. i thought it was nice and understated when she an jay z had the matching tatoos and had an understated wedding and didnt talk about being married at all but now i see that the tattoo was just holding its place while the largest flashiest diamond she could find was being scouted out.

  5. vdantev says:

Never wear anything worth more than the body part it’s attached to.

  6. Lola says:

All I can say is WOW 😯 I don’t even have money for…. Still they make the money, they are entitled to spend it in anyway they want.

What I can’t stand is celebs who are into the environment but will take their children to the park in a plane in a different town in France. No one should sell bio degradable soap with such an obscene carbon footprint.

  7. Lauri says:

Good for her! If I had that kind of money, heck yeah I’d spend it on some luxuries. Why not? Even after donating millions, there would still be plenty left over to enjoy the finer things in life.

  8. Dingles says:

    Ugh.

  9. Scarlett says:

    bros, i completely concur.
i thought they had something else, but now i know, they are no different…just on a larger scale.
it is their money, they earned it, blah blah, but how refreshing and heartwarming would it be to see some of these j@cko%fs actually give back for real.
i take brangelina anyday over these narcissists.

its not easy folks, but a life lived in simplicity and love is a beautiful thing.

  10. Trashaddict says:

OK, they are rich, they are tacky (given less tacky than some). How did they get rich? People bought their stuff! Somebody please tell me was that product worth what’s been paid?
The world is just a freakin’ amazing place….

  11. Tina says:

I’m a single mother (divorce), and a registered nurse with three children under the age of 10… To Brangelina, Jay-Z, Beyonce, and all those other celebrities who urge the public to step up and contribute to all those different good causes, charities, and such: Shut Up. With the kind of money you guys have, the world would have already been a better place by now if you just gave YOUR money to these causes. Jay-Z spends $5 million on a piece of rock, Brangelina spend $60 million (don’t quote me) on a villa in Nice, his-and-her planes… Come on. Spend your own money to help your pet causes and leave me and the public alone.

I think that they should be able to spend their money on anything that htey want. It is not their responsibility to take care of every charitable organization. Jay-Z should be able to spend his money on his wife anyway he sees fit. Starting a charity doesn’t meant that he should single handedly pay for the whole charity. The purpose of starting a charity is to bring awareness to a certain cause not solely be responsible for it financially. Furthermore, I do not find them any more tackier than anyone else. What is the difference between an ordinary man spending 6 months pay man spending 6 months worth of pay to buy a ring for his soon to be wife. Why is it a problem for him to spend 5 million on his wife. Double standards are a M. F. to the lady that said she has seen a bigger rock on a ring pop, my question to you is what size is yours? Their is a lot of hate on this blog!!!!!!:)

    AGREE VDANTEV AND BROS……RIDICULOUS!!!

  15. chamalla says:

LOL, I said I’ve seen smaller ring pops. I meant no judgment against the lovely Beyonce, just noticing her rock is large enough for my eyes to pop out cartoon style.

I think I’d be too paranoid and/or clutzy to ever wear something like that myself, I would like to see it up close.

  16. chaz says:

well, we all know she didn’t marry him because he’s good looking! it was the same in Casino when Deniro spends a million dollars on jewelry for Sharron Stone. It’s kinda like an insurance policy between two people who are obviously unevenly matched. She’s talented and beautiful, and he’s…… well he’s just sort of there.

  17. Amber Jones says:

Can you say stop the hate! Come on, Beyonce deserves and is worth a $5m ring and more. Get over it! She’s a beautiful superstar; and that’s internally and externally. To the broke men who tripping talking about they thought B and J’s relationship was worth more when they had the tatoos, GET OVER YOUR BROKE SELF ALREADY. I’m sure anybody with J’s money and Beyonce as a woman would buy her a $5M ring too. He’ll he has already spent millions on her for gifts like jewelry and that rolls he bought her for her 25th. $5 million is reasonable when you consider the millions he has spent on her alrady. Bottom line is it’s his money, he earned it and she’s his queen. Go Beyonce girl! WORK IT! WORK IT! DON’T EVER LET THE HATERS GET YOU DOWN BEYONCE. Remember Beyonce, mediocricy hates excellence.

  18. goons says:

damn, i wish i had that rock on my finger.. to all those haters, get a job and work hard you might get to thier status sometime..its not her fault that they can afford to buy such.. get over it.. she better stay away from rihanna because with those broke rumors around somoebody might be eying it to go and porn it for some cash..ha ha..as for brangelina, i just hate them..

  19. Baholicious says:

Personally, I’d rather spend engagement ring money on a house or something. The ring is nice from an heirloom perspective but for the most part the engagement ring is for other women.

People tend to mistake size for symbolism.

Maybe I’m off-base with this but there are a lot of men buying/financing rings they simply can’t afford because they want their girl to have a ring she can be ‘proud’ of and her friends won’t think he’s some kind of slouch or pauper.

  20. vdantev says:

    Goons,

She didn’t earn anything- it was given to her and when she’s no longer a marketable asset by the record companies that own her little ass, it’ll all disappear. It happens over and over and over again.

    Wake the f*ck up.

  21. Destiny Diva says:

Jay-Z worked hard to earn his money and has a right to spend it any way he desires. No one has a right to comment on how another spends their money. The man has class I tell you that and he let his new wife know how much he adores her when he purchased that ring. People have become way to judgemental.

  22. Rachel says:

Beyonce’s $5 million engagement ring???.. is this true?.. all I can say is WOWWWW!!! Jay-Z is a good husband! hahaha..

congrats Beyonce! whooo! this is amazing!

  23. tripper says:

i think she shouldve got a ring wort a billion!!!!!!!!!!!U GO BEYONCE DO UR THAND LET THEM HATERS KEEP TALKING, UR MAN LUUUUVVVVVSSS UUU.

  24. ZSizzle says:

Why are people so jealous?? $5M is nothing to these folks, and just because it’s a fortune to you guys doesn’t make what he did wrong. She’s his WIFE.

A man with NO money would probably spend $15,000 on his wife’s ring if he could scrape it together. Real men want to buy things that their QUEENS will love, whether they’re on a starving artist or hip-hop artist/baller budget.

  25. Kamari says:

Y’all some bitter ass bitches! How do you tell someone how to spend their own money though smh foh
