Sofia Vergara: Women of a certain age look better with “a little fat in their face”

sofia12

Sofia Vergara is the cover girl for the March issue of Shape Magazine. I have no idea why the hell people are mad about cut-out dresses now. The cut-outs always seem to be on one of the toughest parts of a lady’s body, at least for me. You couldn’t pay me to wear a dress with that part of abdomen showing. I would stab a bitch who tried. Still, I love that Sofia is now a cover girl for major magazines. I anxiously await her potential pictorials when she (hopefully) gets invited to be a cover girl for Harper’s Bazaar or Elle, or even Vogue. Here are some excerpts from her cover interview:

Sofia on lipstick: “If I walk outside without lipstick, I feel naked.”

On her favorite body part: “I’m sure men would tell you it’s my boobs, but I like my eyes,” she tells the mag. “They have a natural cat’s-eye shape, so I try to play that up.”

Training with Gunnar Peterson: “Oh, I hate it! But I also know that at my age — I’m almost 40! — I have to do it to maintain my figure. When I can, I try to do Latin dancing for exercise because it’s so much fun and I just love the music. Two hours before I go [to the gym], I’m already wishing it was over. I psychologically fool myself into believing it’s part of my job.”

On aging and weight: “I think when women reach a certain age, they look better with a little fat in their face… I’m lucky I’m Latin because people expect me to be a bit more plump.”

On dealing with her boyfriend Nick Loeb’s car accident: “It was hard for us because it happened in the middle of the most fun, sexy time. And then he was in the hospital, and you know men, they become such little babies! [But] he kept his sense of humor despite the situation. I don’t know if I could have stuck it out with him if he hadn’t been able to laugh at himself and be happy even under the worst conditions. When you see people in difficult times, that’s when their true nature comes out.”

[From Us Weekly & Just Jared]

My mother is like that about lipstick too – she will not leave the house without her lipstick. I’ve always thought of it as a Southern thing, but maybe not. Personally, I can’t remember the last time I even wore lipstick. My lips are naturally dark, so I usually just put lip balm or lip gloss on and that’s it.

  2. David says:

Now taht is a real woman!

  3. MarenGermany says:

you guys should totally show this video where she is with gaga (being an absolute snot) at jay leno.
god, what a woman. gracious, funny, sweet, cool….
damn, i fell in love seeing that.

  4. Bite me says:

    Meh

  5. Quest says:

Good for her – she rocks it being a real curvy woman and proud of it. I don’t know why this “skinny is sexy” sells.

I love her and the fact that she is confident and sexy with herself. I do have friends with the lipstick issue and then there are some who would say the same about panties(lol).

  6. Rita says:

Not a hint of a saddle bag in sight.

  7. Arianna says:

renee zellweger, madonna, courtney cox, angelina jolie, etc. etc.

my lips are really red lip balm for me too!

  8. irishserra says:

… said the chick whose face is photoshopped to oblivion in her soda ad (Coke, I think?)

  9. caramia says:

Yeah, I’ve been thinking of what a great beauty Rosie O’Donnell haS become

  10. gabs says:

I love her! Im glad shes getting mag covers now too.

  11. Lynnie says:

But she IS thin! What does she wear, a size 6? She’s stunning and, I’m happy to see, not starved looking, but why is there such a fuss over her being “curvy,” as though she’s a size 12 or a 14? She has boobs but, otherwise, this is not a large woman. Gosh, perceptions are warped. 🙁

  12. EdithP says:

I always find myself wishing she plucked her eyebrows a tiny bit.

And it’s very true that women need a little fat in their faces — my chipmunk cheeks are finally paying off.

  13. Quest says:

@ irishserra: It was Pepsi not Coke.

  14. homeslice says:

Thats so true about the weight in face after 40. Ive been sick and lost a lot of weight and I cant believe how much it has aged me. I cant wait until Im able to pig out and gain it back just so I look healthy again.

  15. kristin says:

She’s ‘bigger’? She’s still very thin, just not starved-looking. She looks great – – but I don’t get the whole “I’m Latin so I can be bigger” thing – – bigger than what?

ITA with her on the women aging thing. Nothing makes a woman look haggard in the face like being too thin after about her mid-twenties. Just ask Rachel Zoe, Angelina Jolie, and so many of these other ladies committed to quasi- starvation.

  16. CB Rawks says:

Totes agree with her. Just call me Jowly. 😀

  17. Scarlet Vixen says:

I’m really starting to love this woman! I’ve been saying that older women need to not starve themselves because it makes them look worse for years. Hello Teri Hatcher and Sarah Jessica Parker…

I also like that she admits that she hates working out but has to. I’m SO sick of starlets claiming they eat whatever they want and never diet because they’re naturally thin.
Bullsh*t so much of the time.

And I’m not a fan of lipstick but I do refuse to leave the house without mascara. My lashes are white-blonde so I look awful without it. I know it’s vain and pathetic, but I even insisted on putting some mascara on while in labor–I knew my husband would be taking pics of me with the new baby and I couldn’t stand the thought of people seeing me without eyelashes. LoL

  18. guesty says:

kaiser…i for one would love to see a pic of u & cb.

  19. hstl1 says:

There she goes again, talking about her boobs. Give it a rest.

  20. nnire says:

i agree with her comment about a little bit of weight in the face. i think of how very thin Audrey Hepburn was during the later part of her life (i know she was always slender, but…) and of how she probably would have looked younger if she hadn’t been so very very thin.

  21. Crash2GO2 says:

Yeah she’s right about the fat on the face part. I constantly struggle with trying to convince it to stay on my face, but it wants to slide right down onto my ass.

  22. orion70 says:

I think this is true, and especially true for women with facial characteristics like thinner lips or what not. You always need a little something behind the wrinkles to fill things out.

  23. MorticiansDoItDeader says:

Latin women typically age very well. At 62 my mother has never had a stretchmark or cellulite. She also doesn’t color her hair and it’s pitch black with only a wisp on grey in the front. She’s very busty and round in the face (which definitely gives her a more youthful appearance).

@scarlet vixen Re: ” I know it’s vain and pathetic, but I even insisted on putting some mascara on while in labor–I knew my husband would be taking pics of me with the new baby and I couldn’t stand the thought of people seeing me
    without eyelashes. LoL”

I know what you mean! I took it to the extreme though. I wore a full face of makeup (including false eyelashes)! And I intend to do the same when this baby comes in 7 weeks.

  24. Diane says:

@Crash2GO2: Me too. It’s so not fair!

  25. Scarlet Vixen says:

@Mortician: Haha, that’s too funny! I probably would’ve kept going with ‘putting my face on’ as my hubs like to put it, but my labor was only 2hrs, so I didn’t have enough time. I had just enough time in between my every-90sec-contractions for the basic essentials: mascara (I put it on my eyebrows too), concealer and bronzer. 🙂

    Congrats on the new baby!!

  26. angela says:

MorticansDoItDeader:- Your mother is 62 and has only ‘ a wisp of grey in the front’ Oh c’mon thats just not possible. At 62 years? Lol!

  27. Gwenevere says:

Being ‘curvy’ does not make a woman any more REAL!

  28. lilred says:

Lol @ Crash yeah I’m constantly caught in the same debate.

  29. garvels says:

I just love this actress and her attitude. By the way, why is it that Vogue and Bazaar favor mannequins like Kim Kardashian over someone like Sophia for their covers??This does not make any sense!

  30. Liana says:

meh. She annoys me. Oh well.

  31. Tiffany says:

I always say when you hit 40 you have to choose between your ass and your face. I’ve chosen to keep the extra 5 pounds and keep the face.

I have pale lips and always wear lipstick and mascara, even in childbirth. I get chapped lips without lipstick anyway.

She IS really thin, I don’t get why she is always saying she is bigger. Bigger than the starved ones, but still thin.

  32. MorticiansDoItDeader says:

@scarlet, thanks 🙂 2 hour labor? That’s impressive! I was 8 total the first time around (but had to push for 3 of those hours because my son was OP aka sunny side up). Hopefully this one will be in the correct position and labor will be shorter.

@Angela, I can hardly believe it myself! Unfortunately, I take after my Irish father. So, I don’t think I’ll fair as well in the aging department
    🙁

  33. Ruby Red Lips says:

Totally agree – women looks age much faster with skinny faces, a bit of ‘chubby’ in the face is a blessing in older age

  34. Scarlet Vixen says:

@Angela: Why don’t you think it’s possible (unless you’re being sarcastic)? My dad is 74 and his hair is still dark brown/black except fot some gray at the temples. My mum, on the other hand, starting graying in her early 40s & is completely white under the dye.

  35. Ruby Red Lips says:

    @ Caramia

“Yeah, I’ve been thinking of what a great beauty Rosie O’Donnell haS become”

Even as a stick R O’D would never be ‘gorg’ so you’re example is redundant

  36. Megan says:

@Lynnie A size 6 is considered to be small? Wow that’s sad. I would hate to know what you consider BIG!

  37. the H says:

She is DEFINITELY the reason my boyfriend watches Modern Family. Every time on one of her scenes are on his eyes are glued.. I know where they are glued.

    She’s gorg. Love her.

  38. LittleDeadGirl says:

Love her and her attitude and I love that she’s so honest about exercising (and the fact she does it … I also claim bullshit on the girls saying they pig out and are 110 pounds at 5’9 … that kind of metabolism is rare). I have a slow metabolism so even though I’m younger if I don’t run four days a week I start to plump up fast. I don’t hate it but I don’t love it and half the time I have to drag myself to do it.

… and I have to admit to the vanity other people are talking about above as well -lol- I can’t go outside not put together a little bit. Half the time I put on a bit of mascara even when I got running at 9 oclock at night and I KNOW no one can see me. Sad but true.

  39. filthycute says:

Annoying woman. Stop talking about your own boobs. She’s like Kim K and JLO constantly referencing their butts.

    STFU.

  40. when I used to be Sofia’s assistant, she would drag me to do spinning and she would say: “I get paid to not eat and be in shape” and I would reply: “but I don’t, this spinning class is going to kill me”. then we would go out for lunch and split a cheesecake. Love her! Toty is awesome!

  41. skibunny says:

Dye your eyleshes! I’ve been doing it for years. And my brows. You still need mascara when you dress up but at least your eyes aren’t bald when you go for a run in the early morning.

  42. Kiska says:

She has a body that men (and women) crave. But most importantly, she is down to earth and not a huge diva.

  43. Delta Juliet says:

    @Megan

I HATE that I am being sucked into this discussion but are you saying that a size 6 is big??!! Wow…..we really have been brainwashed by the fashion industry.

  44. bananapanda says:

Anyone else think that Julie Bowen could take her advice? I want to feed that woman. And Sarah Jessica Parker who looked much better in earlier seasons of SATC.

  45. angela says:

Having lived for years in South America, I know Latin women. They’re very vain shallow people who think more of how they look than anything else, especially the ones from Venezuela and Colombia.

  46. Isa says:

MorticiansDoItDeader-My daughter looks like her Irish father too. Me and your mom, we have a lot in common it seems. Haha.

I’m only 22, but I feel like my face looks better with less fat. But I’m lazy so the fat is there to stay. Hopefully it will pay off in the future.

I don’t like lipstick. I think it’s too dry looking, no matter how moist it is when you first put it on. I am addicted to lip balm. I have to put some on every night before bed.

  47. sail says:

People with sharp angular faces age badly because when they lose the youthful fat from their faces they look haggard and sharp. Ironically, sharp angular faces are photogenic and considerd beautiful, eg a model’s cheekbones. Photogeniality is about how the light reflects off the face. Unfortunately, whiter skin does not age as well as darker skin, ad Europeans are usually the ones with the most angular faces, which is why they don’t age well. I’m Asian and have a round two dimensional face, so I’m lucky.

  48. DSMR says:

Love this woman, she is funny, exotic and very beautiful. I watched her on Leno, yup she is HOT! Lol, poor Lady CaCa looked and acted like a twitchy, strung out inscure Chiuaua next to her. At one time CaCa grabbed her head with both hands to keep it from exploding due to SV’s hotness. 🙂

  49. MorticiansDoItDeader says:

@Isa, yes! We do. And it’s funny, b/c kids usually favor the darker skinned parent. My mom often says, if she had been able to have more than just me, at least one would have looked like her.
My husband is half Italian and half Puerto Rican (so we’re both 50% Hispanic) and our son also looks Irish!

  50. Liana says:

@megan, I’m a size 6 and no one considers me big, except, obviously for you.

  51. Lee says:

Thank goodness … a real woman who is not sticking her finger down her throat trying to be a size 0. You go girl…..

  52. Emma says:

@Megan: According to the majority of clothing retailers, yes. Sizes 4-6 are considered to be a small. Unless she’s like 4’9 (Snooki sized) there is absolutely no way she could be remotely fat or big at a size 6.

  53. Crash2GO2 says:

Good grief, in what world is a size 6 LARGE??

I have quite angular features, but was fortunate to be born dark’ish’ complected, so my at least my skin is holding up very well. I cherish the hell out of my cheekbones and hope they don’t disappear under sliding flesh any time soon, although my jawline is starting to show some wear and tear. O_o

  54. Susan says:

    CTRL + F “Boobs”

Yep. She talked about em again.

  55. MuñekitA says:

Yes! She’s gourgeous & has a GREAT body!
But can some one please tell her to go with an eyebrow stylist?
    they have no form!

  56. jemshoes says:

I’m personally addicted to Vaseline petroleum jelly for my lips since lip balms “dry” up / wear off too quickly for me.

I like Sofia Vergara’s soundbites – they always sound authentic and honest to me, like she would be a fun, relaxed girl to hang out with.

  57. Camille says:

@Liana #30. I agree, she annoys me as well.

She is a pretty woman though, however I thought she was already in her 40s?

  58. Kim says:

She is SOOOOO right about after certain age women look better with meat on their bones/fat on their face. I have been saying this for years! Super thin women look WAY older than they really are.

This happens with women who lose alot of weight rapidly also – like when Anna Nicole lost all the weight and people said she wasnt as pretty. She wasnt because she looked better with meat on her bones/fatter face.

  59. Kim says:

In Hollywood a size 6 is considered fat – seriously. Anything over size 4 is considered fat in Hollywood. So sad but true.

  60. Isa says:

MorticiansDoItDeader- That’s what we figured when I was pregnant with my first. We thought she would be dark complected and we crossed our fingers for blue eyes. But she came out with blonde hair, blue eyes and pale skin. It was quite the shock. Her hair has changed colors and everyone consideres her a redhead, but to me it’s a strawberry blonde.
I’m preg with my second and everyone says, “Maybe this one will look like you!” but I dunno. It might be weird to have two kids that look completely different.

    Those Irish genes, they’re something!!!

  61. april says:

size doesnt really mean much. some people in a size 6 would look small and others look like an average size, by no means is it big though.

it does have a lot to do with how tall you are. a very tall woman could wear the same size as a shorter woman and look much thinner. it is your weight and height together. tall women can carry more weight and still look slim.

sophia vergara looks like she should, she looks healthy, and she has curves, and therefore curvy. she is not a stick.

  62. CB Rawks says:

I’d just like to say that my new bra makes my rack look amazing. 😀

  63. anonymous says:

Morticia 323: Latin women don’t age well after 25 they face is down hill. I am sure Vigara already had work done, wish this actress would do her thing in Hollywood and stop talking down other stars, the last time she talked so nasty about Madonna who is an icon in the music business it isn’t just about looks its about talent, Vigara isn’t anything to write home about! She just landed a sitcome when she can put out block busters like Angie, Julia and Nicole then she could talk and even then she sholdn’t, she has been in Hollywood long enough to know stars don’t say negative about things starlettes they let the press do it.

  64. Cleo says:

I am of the opposite opinion. The older you get, the more important it is to look absolutely trim. Goo goo looks inefficient on older women. It’s not impressive just disturbing. I don’t like the anorexic stringy starved look but zero tolerance for avoirdupois is a must.

  65. Ally says:

Daaaaaaayuuuuuuummmmmm! If I looked like that, I’d talk about my boobs too.
