Emma Watson is taking a break from university

Harry Potter star Emma Watson, 20, has announced on her website that she’s putting her studies at Brown University on hold temporarily as she promotes the final installment of the Harry Potter franchise, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which is out this summer, and works on some addition projects. According to IMDB, she stars in My Week With Marilyn, featuring Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe, which is out sometime this year and is in post-production. She is currently filming Perks of Being a Wallflower, based on a novel by Stephen Chbosky and co-starring Oprah, Logan Lerman and Larry David. Here’s Emma’s statement on taking a break from college:

On Monday, Emma Watson announced she’ll be temporarily leaving the Ivy League school to promote the final installment of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

“As you know, I love Brown and I love studying pretty much more than anything but recently I’ve had so much to juggle that being a student and fulfilling my other commitments has become a little impossible,” she wrote on her official website.

“I’ve decided to take a bit of time off to completely finish my work on Harry Potter (the last one comes out this summer) and to focus on my other professional and acting projects,” Watson, 20, continued. “I will still be working towards my degree…it’s just going to take me a semester or two longer than I thought.”

Before Watson enrolled at Brown University in September 2009, she also considered attending Trinity College, Cambridge, Yale University and Columbia.

[From US Weekly]

This was probably a very tough decision for her and one she thought about for a long time. It’s early in the second semester at Brown, which started on January 26 with the last drop/add day on February 23. She probably began this semester with high expectations and then realized she just didn’t have enough time to devote to her studies. Unlike Hermione, there’s no magic watch she can use to reverse time and gain entire days back. If had one of those things I wouldn’t be using it to study twice that’s for sure. I also might not have even gone to college if I had her millions, so props to her.

In somewhat related news, Universal Studios have announced that they will open up the Harry Potter set to tourists starting next year. The set is located in Herfertshire just East of London and will be available for tours starting in the Spring of 2012. According to the WB Studio Tour website it will feature “authentic sets, costumes and props from the Harry Potter film series” with a ticket price “comparable to other top London attractions.” You can’t buy tickets there and must pre-book online. I would love to go to this, it sounds so amazing. I’m not the biggest Harry Potter fan but the sets were impressive and I’m excited to see where Harry Potter was filmed. [via JoBlo, Fark]

Isn’t that what the Olsen twins said before they dropped out of NYU?

  2. Bubbling says:

Might?! My ass wouldn’t be seen nowhere near Uni if I had her millions! So good for her for trying I guess…

  3. chasingadalia says:

    Sounds reasonable.

  4. Rita says:

I would feel absolutely naked wearing that, uh dress.

I give her big kudos for going to school. Using money as a means to improve oneself…what a novel concept for a celebrity. I worked every day while I was in school and it would have been so nice to have the money to buy the time and just study and live a student’s life. One year my parents sent me $20.00 for Christmas and it was such a luxury.

  5. JustBored says:

She looks stunning in that little outfit. Especially the one going up the steps.

I just hope she goes back and finish her studies. Good for her.

  6. Rasputina says:

I love the fact that her body looks, well, NORMAL. No stick thin arms and legs. This girl is lovely from brain to toe.

  7. hairball says:

I’m sure she is over-whelmed. I hope she does finish her degree though in the near future and makes that a priority.

  8. normades says:

I hope she doesn’t pull an Olsen (sister) and not go back. But seriously, if you were that young and had that much money, would you want to study?

  9. sophie says:

You’ve written “Herfertshire” don’t you mean “Hertfordshire”?

  10. Caitlin says:

I like her, she’s cute and seems to be pretty grounded. A little nervous about the ‘Wallflower’ movie though, it’s one of my favorite books and hopefully they don’t screw it up. At least the author is writing and directing so that’s a plus.

  11. lucy2 says:

I bet she’ll go back to finish once her current obligations ease up a little. I give her credit for knowing what she can and can’t handle, and for pursuing her education at all.

  12. Katie says:

I hope she actually goes back. I would guess that her celebrity status helped get into an elite school and she should take the opportunity given to her. But there is nothing wrong with taking a couple of extra semesters! I worked full time during school and had to do it that way.

  13. Tess says:

More power to her….if she returns.

  14. JPX says:

This is a very foolish move on her part. The longer she is away from school the less likely she will ever return. She is attending one of the best schools in the country and she is taking it for granted. This is really a dumb move. She needs to understand that her education is much more important than fleeting fame.

  15. Geekylove says:

I just never grew to accept her as a hermione- hermione deserves much better, deeper acting, but i’m an avid hp fan.
Good luck to her and hope she goes back to college soon, especially if it turns out that she was best as hermione.
I Like that she looks healthy!:)

  16. Bodhi says:

    Its a time turner, not a watch… Sorry, I’m a giant HP nerd…

And even if her fame is fleeting, something I very much doubt, she will never have to work ever again. The HP kids & their families are set for life.

I wish that she weren’t taking a break, but I understand why she is doing it. All that press work must be exhausting, especially since this is the last movie *sob*

I normally like her style, but I hate this dress… It looks way to much like an ice skater’s costume. She does have a great body though! She has been looking a little tin lately, but so bad at all ๐Ÿ™‚

  17. Bodhi says:

Why are all of my comments going to mod all of a sudden?

    Edit: Thanks!

  18. lili says:

pls, an undergrad degree really does not require that much work….
that, and she is getting pretty heavy for her age…

  19. kiko says:

    wrong move!!!

  20. gee says:

She was only kind of doing college before anyway. She was always at events and fashion weeks during the semester.. it would be hell on a student to miss that much class (and most professors down grade after 3 absences), so I understand why she’d want to take time off instead of letting her grades and personal well being suffer. She can go back when she has time. It’s not like she needs college.

  21. I Choose Me says:

I find that dress tacky but boy does she have great legs.

  22. Mrs. Krabapple says:

Another figure-skater dress. This is the third one I’ve seen her in within the past couple of months. She’s a cute girl, but she needs a better stylist.

  23. Bodhi says:

    “heavy for her age”??

You have GOT to be joking! She is tiny! For any age!

  24. LondonLady says:

She is in London so often it is hard to beleive she is at school at all. I would imagine that the school advised her to take the semester off after the last term, I cannot imagine she was around much

  25. Lisa says:

    It’s Hertfordshire and it’s north of London!! I’m a picky Brit ๐Ÿ˜‰

  26. KB_explosion says:

please take your messed up ideas about people’s bodies elsewehere.

because calling her ‘heavy’ is just that, MESSED UP.

i shudder to think what my body/life would be like if i took comments like yours and applied them to my own body. so, so wrong.

  27. lili says:

#26 – at least half the people i know are way smaller than her (and at least 10-15 years older). the other half are bigger – only bc they have larger bones. she`s really untoned, and in her age there is no reason to be flabby. it is not an opinion on people`s bodies, which naturally come in all sizes and shapes, but on keeping fit. it`s just about being healthy, you know….

  28. hatsumomo says:

I just got through with the Guiliana story then clicked on this and it sruck me how healthy she looks. Worlds apart, the two are! She is thin but shapely and a wonderful creamy tan color, not that tacky burnt orange thats so popular right now.

  29. Blank says:

Sorry, but it annoys me that people go on and on about how she’s a great role model when she’s never really done anything that impressive. She smoked and drank before turning 18 which means she’s normal, not special. Her acting in HP could have been a lot better.

You only make people dislike her when you go on about how great she is. And honestly she’s been in the spotlight none stop for years. Wouldn’t people like her more if they forgot about her for awhile?

  30. Paris says:

    #27

She looks great for any age. Who cares if she’s not super toned? She looks normal and healthy and fine. You don’t have to kill yourself to avoid gaining a pound.

  31. Newbie says:

I can’t help but really like her (what we know of her, I guess).

  32. Juu says:

I hope they will build a Harry Potter Park just like Disney’s, or even better.

  33. Gabriela says:

She has pretty legs and a perfect face. Nice to know she’s not just some empty vase and that she actually wants to graduate.

  34. Chris says:

Why was she still going to school anyway? Was she keeping her options open just in case the acting thing didn’t workout? ๐Ÿ™‚

  35. geekylove says:

Blank, i totally agree with you. couldn’t have said it better myself!

  36. Indian classical says:

I am now not certain the place you are getting your info, however good topic. I needs to spend some time finding out much more or figuring out more. Thanks for great info I was in search of this info for my mission.
