I do not understand the NYT Article outrage. The reporter wrote the quotes from neighbors. He did not state his own opinions about why an 11 year old is out running the streets with undesirable people. The neighbors saying those things may be insensitive, but if a reporter writes about a woman being stoned to death in Saudi Arabia and quotes the father as saying she was an evil whore who will burn in h*ll, what’s the difference?

Actually, you totally nailed it. Katy’s parents are extremely religious Christian pastors who raised her on the *extreme* end of straight laced & hyper repressed.
She was allowed to use the word ‘Lucky’ because they were only supposed to attribute positive things to ‘blessings’. Plus Katy has said her mother feels the word ‘Lucky’ is too similar to ‘Lucifer’. She wasn’t allowed to watch ‘The Smurfs’ because her parents felt they were ‘too reliant on magic & sorcery’.
They had a fit when her ‘kissed a girl’ song came out. “…Katy’s mother, Mary Hudson says, “I hate the song. It clearly promotes homosexuality and its message is shameful and disgusting. Katy knows how I feel.” She tells the British paper that she and her husband are “deeply ashamed” of their daughter and say that the song “promotes a sin. When it comes on the radio I bow my head and pray.”
I feel her pain, big time… My grandfather & 2 of my uncles are pastors. I mean absolutely no offense to anyone, but that sort of repressed hyper-judgmental lifestyle gets old, *really* fast. I’m not a very religious person, so I know how stifling growing up in that environment can be.
