Kate Middleton’s parents are making a six-figure contribution to the wedding

wenn1231864

The royal wedding is about six weeks away. Six. Long. WAITY. Weeks. As such, the royal gossip, both official and unofficial, is in overdrive. In the April issue of Vanity Fair, there is yet another Middleton-related story. I think VF is trying to give People Magazine a run for their royal-arse-kissing money, but I also have to hand it to VF: they’ve got some of the best, bitchiest “unnamed sources” out there. Anyway, in the April VF (the one with Sparkles and the gator, LMAO), there’s a story all about Waity Katy’s parents, and what they think of Kate’s grand WAIT and what Prince William thinks of his soon-to-be in-laws. It’s a great read, and for the full piece, you’ll just have to pick up the magazine. Here’s the press release though:

“It is something they absolutely wanted to do, and William graciously accepted,” a senior aide tells Vanity Fair writer Katie Nicholl, confirming the rumor that the Middletons would be making a six-figure contribution to the royal wedding. Traditionally the royal family alone pays the entire cost.

“At first Carole rather enjoyed the attention,” a family friend tells Nicholl of Kate Middleton’s mother. “She seemed to find the whole thing quite dizzying, but the constant nit-picking in the press did get to her.” But, says neighbor and friend Lynda Tillotson, “in the village we are very protective. There’s a lot of camaraderie towards the Middletons. I think they have coped amazingly well, given the attention…. Carole was in here the other day buying candles and she was in great spirits. She’s a great-looking woman, who is always very relaxed, lively, and outgoing…. Michael is a lovely man, very calm and kind.”

A family friend tells Nicholl that Michael, Kate’s father, has been a stabilizing influence.

“Kate’s feet are still on the ground, largely because of Michael. He doesn’t get too swept up in the grandeur of her new life, and Kate loves him for that. She gets a lot of her characteristics from him.”

It’s these qualities which friends suspect have helped Kate navigate her tumultuous relationship and make her family so appealing to William.

“William loves his holidays with the Middletons because they are so relaxed,” explains a friend. “He’s always saying how much fun Carole is. She’s very young in spirit and a great entertainer. One of her and Michael’s favorite after-dinner party jokes is announcing the flights coming into Mustique in their best air-steward voices as they dine alfresco. It always has William in hysterics.”

According to Nicholl, the Middleton children—Kate, Pippa, and James—are incredibly close, and are often seen out together, thus having earned the nickname “the En Masse Middletons.”

“They queue up like everyone else and pay at the end of the night,” says Michael Evans, who manages a bar in London’s Mayfair. “They let their hair down, but they are always reserved.”

“Pippa has always had high standards,” friends say of Kate’s younger sister. “Ideally her date has to be wealthy and clever, and preferably he’ll have a double-barrel surname. It will help that she is now the most sought-after singleton in London. Pippa’s a great networker, like her mother. At Edinburgh she made sure she hung out with the right crowd.”

And Kate’s brother, James, “is very good-looking and likes to flirt,” says a chum. “He dropped out of Edinburgh, where he was studying English, after a year. He was a big drinker and loved to party, but he was more interested in drinking and going shooting than girls.”

All three siblings have at some time or another worked for Party Pieces, the financially successful company founded by their parents. Lynda Tillotson says, “Carole was the brains behind the business. She knows what she is doing and she knows where she is going.”

The head for business runs in the family. As James has said, “I really want to promote my company, but I have to be careful. I work really hard—we all do, and I love what I do—but I can never talk about my sister.”

[From Vanity Fair]

First of all: It amazes me that the Middletons’ are contributing to the wedding costs, it really does. I’m sure it will buy them some respect from the British taxpayers, as well as the famously penny-pinching Queen, but this is the first time I can recall that the commoner’s family contributed to the cost of a royal wedding. It’s just not done! Poppycock.

Next: Carole sounds like a first-rate social climber. And the really great social climbers will tell you: it’s not about playing favorites or always knowing who the most important person in the room is – it’s about kissing everyone’s ass. And Pippa – more than Kate – sounds like a chip off the ol’ block. From what I’ve been reading about Pippa, she’s the one who would probably enjoy being in Kate’s position much, much more. She just sounds so much more out-going and kiss-assy than her big sister.

And it really sounds like William was attracted to not just Kate, but to her entire family, right? His family was and is so famously dysfunctional, it must be nice for him to marry into such a close-knit, normal family.

Ten bucks says William bones Pippa within three years.

No Kaiser! Poppycock to that! Let’s not doom William and Kate before they even head down the aisle!

  2. silken_floss says:

    Well, that’s nice

  3. margie says:

Pippa looks like a man; Kate is much prettier. I hope Wills keeps it in his pants and doesn’t bone Pippa. I want them to be happy forever!!!

  4. N.D. says:

Kate is much prettier than her sister and more elegant. Plus somehow I think William has enough sense not to.

  5. Granger says:

Damn, that was a nasty thing to say! Just because he’s a royal doesn’t mean Wills is going to be a womanizer.

  6. francesca says:

I love how happy Kate looks. May nothing happen to ruin it!

  7. malachais says:

Pippa is not cuter than Kate, Kate is way prettier.. I hope William doesn’t hurt Kate in the long-term although it seems inevitable.

  8. azurea says:

    Pippa sounds like a bitch.

  9. Roma says:

Oh William. They have pills for your hair!

  10. Hautie says:

Well if the Middleton’s can afford to pay towards the cost, then let them.

I wonder how much the catering bill would be? Or even the flowers. I bet that is a six figure price tag.

I tend to believe Pippa would not give William the time of day, if he did not have a title. Now she may take a hit on Hot Harry. 🙂

I agree Pippa has intentions of wanting to marry extremely well. And with a family that is in the same social circle of the young royals.

But without all the pressure of being royal.

  11. Lantana says:

Oh the British and their whacky sense of humor — let’s make believe we’re announcing incoming flights! Hysterical!

  12. munchies says:

mother and daughter got same legs!

  13. Kiska says:

Maybe Pippa will sneak into Prince Hot Ginge’s room and seduce him. That’s what I would do. *smirks*

  14. sapphire says:

Kaiser, I’ll take that bet, but not because Pippa or any Windsor is a saint. I just think William is totally paranoid about that type of scandal. I can see him doing an Andrew-type swindle before I see him screwing around after watching his mum and dad called every possible name.

  15. Crash2GO2 says:

Pippa is very pretty isn’t she? I so find all this talk about ‘only dating someone wealthy’ with ‘double barrel surnames’ to be so – erm – quaint. Do they really think all of that is so critical in England?

  16. curmudgeon says:

I would say that social climbing may be a family trait. They learned it somewhere.

  17. mln76 says:

Oh he’ll cheat eventually but I doubt it will be with her sister. I do think Kaity will look the other way though.

  18. filthycute says:

    Pippa’s face is painfully appalling.

  19. Melinda says:

No, Kaiser, no! Can we please have 1 successful high-profile marriage with out scandal or cheating? They look so cute and happy together, can we please have that last?

  20. Justaposter says:

Really Kaiser, still with the Waity?!
Honey, time to move on from that okay.

  21. NancyMan says:

I hope that if the Middletons are such a close knit normal family, they will discourage their children from ‘boning’ each other’s spouses. Jeez!

If sister Pippa, who’s pretty enough in my book, plays her cards right, she will find a stud who is as wealthy and better looking than Prince William and without that King ‘yoke’ around his neck. She’s going to have a lot of fun.

And, I love that although the Middletons may be considered ‘social climbers’ by some, their money is good enough to be accepted as a handout to what’s left of the British Empire. That’s sad..

I guess their first State Dinner will just be pickup food set out in the royal ‘lounge’.

  22. BW says:

“The royal wedding is about six weeks ago.”

That means it was at the beginning of February and we’ve all missed it.

I think you mean it’s six weeks away.

  23. Minx2 says:

Her father looks like a lovely person. Her mother, on the other hand, seems like a social climber, so does Pippa. Pippa, btw, is nowhere as pretty as Kate.

  25. Lisa Turtle says:

Kate is pretty for the British… Earthy, simple, healthy looking. If it wasn’t for her terrible makeup and grandmotherly styling habits, she would be conventionally pretty for American eyes too.

Pippa is pretty for…. no one… Seriously, she is as orange as Snookie, but I wouldn’t doubt for a minute she’s a real charmer, probably more charming than Kate. She has to be.

  26. JulieM says:

Waity (No Longer) Forever! It will never get old because she earned it.

Nice, though, that the Middletons are contributing something. Six figures; I’ll believe it when I see it. The British taxpayers are contributing 8 figures.

I know that many want to believe in fairy tales, but he will cheat. Maybe not right away, but eventually. He strikes me as rather spoiled and entitled. In short, a lot like his father. And, I don’t think it will be Pippa.

  27. bananapanda says:

I don’t know about their mother. She grew up rather poor and could still have that fear of being poor again. I like to think they worked hard, succeeded as entrepreneurs, raised good kids, put them through good schools and hope that they marry well. England is totally class obsesssed and it’s considered outrageous to try to improve your lot, whether by money or marrying.

  28. Ell says:

The British so called stereotypes mentioned above are outrageous and offensive(kidding).

Although the average British person is NOT class obsessed or would think it was fun to announce incoming flights.

I don’t think Wills will be a cheater, Harry on the other hand…

  29. bluhare says:

@LisaTurtle: Are you the daughter of that Burger King ass? Maybe you ought to not read about anything British if we assault your American eyeballs.

  30. jill says:

That last line was effing priceless!

And William has quite the exposed dome in that last pic…not that there’s anything wrong with that.

  31. dahlia1947 says:

They are a gorgeous couple and I wish them all of the best!! And I’m sure that they care less about negative things that are being said! 😀 They are going on with their lives while all the wimps behind their computer screens seethe with jealousy!

  32. KsGirl says:

Quote: “Do they really think all of that is so critical in England?”

Only a very, very tiny subsection of society. I lived there for years and never met someone like this. I know they exist, but it’s not like every English teenager dreams of meeting the older, titled man of their dreams and refuses to even consider anyone else.

  33. kg says:

William has already cheated on her several times. It would not surprise me if he did so again after they were married.

I have read the Middletons are contributing to the flowers and are paying for the dress. That probably is 6 figures in American money. I think that was more for PR purposes than anything else, but it was still nice of them to be willing to contribute and lower the burden on the tax payer.

Hopefully Kate is loving the job because this is what she has been waiting for.

  34. EbonyShiksa says:

This question is very peasant-y of me, but what exactly is a “double-barrel surname?”

  35. Lisa Turtle says:

    @EbonyShiksa,

It is a hyphenated name. Like Jolie-Pitt. The implication is that both mother & father (or granmother & grandfather) were from families with good, noble names, and they chose to pass both names on to their children. Often “double-barrel” surnames are seen in families with inherited titles & estates. The royal “Windsor” family itself used to be from the house of Saxe-Coburg-Gothe.

  36. Lantana says:

@Ell I am really glad you humorously conditioned your post up front. I had this delayed reaction about 3 hours after I posted about the incoming flight thing when I thought, “I hope that isn’t offensive to Brits.” On a superficial level, I want to say that I love Monty Python and Fawlty Towers. On a serious note, it made me think about how some of my “prejudices” are masked. I want to be seen (in my real life lol) as someone that is very tolerant, and I realize that I need to think twice before writing (or speaking). I understand that you were joking (as was I), but I don’t want there to be a time that I unintentionally offend someone.(I leave that up to the gossip columnists lol) (Ooops there I go again – I like gossip columnists, really.)

  37. Lady D says:

That last line was effing priceless!
    Totally cosign above sentiment.
    Lantana, Fawlty Towers rocks!

  38. Hmmm says:

Since Waity’s parents are paying for some of the festivities, I wonder if they get a say. Like, deciding on the hall, or who gets invited, or whether there will be a dry ice first dance…

  39. Nibbi says:

    barrfffff

class obsession is so dated and GROSS

(disney be damned for forever trying to foist the “princess myth” on our little girls, too)

i am glad to be an american. sure, we’re pretty short-sighted and rather hypocritically like to pretend that we don’t have strong class distinctions in our country, but that to me is *infinitely* better than this blatant pandering and slobbering over those of “higher status” due to the simple facts of their family relations. paying lip service to social climbing and social climbers = blaaagh = can’t wait til this hoopla is over; wouldn’t mind seeing less of it in the american press.

now that that rant’s out of the way, can we have some more brangelina news? 😉

  40. Neena says:

bananapanda – I 100% agree with you. I don’t understand all the hate towards the Middleton’s. They seem like a nice family to me.

They have obviously worked very hard to get where they are and to provide a good future for their kids. Good for them.

If they had done anything illegal or suspect business wise. The press would have found out by now.
