Emma Roberts in Elle: boring, entitled, smug, or just fine?

elle11

My opinion on Emma Roberts is that she’s a pretty little thing, she’s kind of smug and conceited, and that she’s still very, very young. I keep hoping that she’ll grow out of her youthful “I’m better, and I know everything” attitude, but the years keep passing and she just stays the same. Lainey at LaineyGossip had an interesting take on Emma when Lainey interviewed her at Sundance this year – go here for the post. The kid sounds like a massive brat. So is it surprising that Julia Roberts’ niece idolizes Gwyneth Paltrow? Not really. I can see her identifying with a woman who is one of the worst examples of Hollywood nepotism is a good role model. Anyway, Emma is profiled in the new Elle Magazine, and she has a lot to say:

Despite Emma Roberts’ best efforts to carve her own swath through Hollywood rather than capitalize on her famous DNA, you just can’t look at her large, gleaming, slightly lopsided smile and not be reminded of her aunt Julia. The younger Roberts credits her aunt with sparking her desire to act by bringing her to movie sets when she was little; Emma’s first (uncredited) role, in fact, was as an extra in 2001’s America’s Sweethearts.

“I was always running around to the makeup trailer and the wardrobe trailer, trying on clothes, and letting people do my hair,” she says. “I loved it.”

Still, the 20-year-old, whose parents, actor Eric Roberts and teacher Kelly Cunningham, split when she was an infant, names two different leading ladies as her role models.

“Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Hudson have made names for themselves regardless of the fact that their parents were famous,” she says. “I’d like to have a career like that too.”

For a former Nickelodeon tween star—she played musically inclined seventh-grader Addie Singer in the series Unfabulous from 2004 to 2007 and released a CD, Unfabulous and More, in 2005—Roberts has already built up quite a diverse résumé. Since debuting as Johnny Depp’s daughter in the 2001 drug-smuggling saga Blow at age nine, she’s genre-jumped between romantic ensembles (Valentine’s Day, costarring her aunt), innocuous family fare (Hotel for Dogs, Nancy Drew), and gritty indies (British crime caper 4.3.2.1), while also logging cred time opposite comedy titans Alec Baldwin (Lymelife) and Zach Galifianakis, with whom she starred as a troubled teen in a mental institution in last year’s sweetly low-key It’s Kind of a Funny Story.

With her appearance in this month’s Scream 4, as Jill Roberts, the girl-next-door cousin of Neve Campbell’s character, she can check horror off the list too. “There were times when we were filming in a weird house at 2 a.m. and I’d get really spooked out,” she says, “but what I’ve always loved about the Scream films is that they’ll have you terrified one moment and laughing the next.”

Just as her career begins to pick up serious steam, Roberts plans to begin college at Sarah Lawrence in the fall—“unless something big comes along.” (She deferred last year, after being cast in Valentine’s Day.) Like anyone in her profession, she’s a movie buff—“I’m a huge Wes Anderson fan; I would faint if I met him, let alone got to work with him.”

But her Twitter feed, refreshingly, name-drops the authors she’s reading (Joan Didion and Chuck Palahniuk are favorites) rather than the parties she’s attending.

“I think it’s important to have stuff to talk about other than work,” she says, admitting that she feels uncommonly mature for someone so young. Yet unlike many actresses her age, who play up their sex appeal in order to fast-forward the transition to grown-up roles, Roberts seems to delight in that wonderful, fleeting moment of being in between.

“I can still play a high school student if I want, or I can play older,” she says. “I don’t have to limit myself right now, so why should I?”

[From Elle]

Yeah… she still sounds like a brat. To me, at least. I’m sure that some people will defend her, and that’s fine. Maybe she’ll grow into a well-adjusted, humble young woman. Or maybe it will just get worse and worse until her maniacal cackle takes over from her Aunt Julia’s.

Also, here’s a thought – shouldn’t Emma be judged by the same standards as her peers? Mia Wasikowska is one year older than Emma, and Mia has never come across as bratty, smug or anything other than interesting and professional. Mia has a better career too. I’m just sayin’.

  1. liz says:

Um, the sentence should have read:

“Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Hudson have made names for themselves BECAUSE of the fact that their parents were famous”

  2. Lisa says:

I don’t like this entitled little bitch! Gosh you just have to read the laineygossip interview to see what a major bitch she is.

  3. Schnauzers!!!! says:

She is a beautiful girl. I think she knows she’s in her “marketable window” and chances are, it’s a small window. Why no capitalize on it now?

  4. Newbie says:

She looks exactly like K. Stew in that bottom pic.

  5. Cherry Rose says:

    That’s one hot jacket.

She’s really pretty in these photos.

  6. spinner says:

hmmmm…looks like Auntie Julia has taught her well.

    I pick smug!!

  7. brin says:

She is defintely entitled. If you don’t have the talent to back it up, STFU.

  8. YAY says:

    HAHA..sorry, she’s not beautiful.

  9. Lisa says:

@Ya8- I concur. She’s average looking at best.

  10. Kat says:

Entitled, smug, arrogant, narcissistic….this is what too much success too young can yield.

How can there be actresses like Emma AND actresses like Mia Wasikowska/Dakota Fanning in the same industry? What is it about the latter’s upbringing that makes each of them smart, focused young women with a good head on their shoulders, versus celeb-brats like Emma?

  11. Riley says:

Eric Roberts has had so many troubles and Julia has been very clear that she does not have much a relationship with him, but I do admire that she has been an active part of her neices’s life. Yeah, she is smug and spoiled but seems pretty harmless. An aside, she kind of looks like a skinny Ke$ha in the top photo.

  12. Lisa Turtle says:

I actually met her with my little cousin in LA a while ago… I think it was 2009 or 2010…. ANYWAY she was a mega bitch and although she was walking around a crowded shopping center, chainsmoking, she would not take a picture with my cousin (who was 7 at the time and a big fan of “Unfabulous”).

So I say Entitled, Smug and Awful.

  13. Arianna says:

    ahhh that jacket gimme!!

she’s quite gorgeous in these photos. but yeah gotta agree she’s smug

  14. Turquoise Blue says:

Entitled little snot. There are so many talented, hard working actors out there who would be thrilled to be interviewed (Lainey’s story) for a movie they were lucky enough to be in, and then there’s this Hollywood brat. I hope her career goes nowhere and we get to see her forced to get a REAL job.

  15. Violet says:

I don’t think she sounds like a brat but she doesn’t sound particularly interesting either. I’m a huge fan of the scream movies and a bit disappointed that she’s got such a big part in the new one as opposed to some of the other young stars in it with smaller parts like brittany roberston but she’s fairly inoffensive to me.

  16. Annaloo says:

It’s Gwyneth Part Deux – The Insufferable Sequel, and the media will keep shoving this girl in our face to point out that LIFE IS NOT FAIR.

    LORD HELP US ALL.

  17. mandy3gt says:

Haha, she thinks she’s “mature for her young age”. What girl doesn’t think that?

  18. curmudgeon says:

REGARDLESS of the fact that their parents are famous? How about BECAUSE their parents are famous you smug spoiled little snot? Just once I would like to see some grace and greatfulness from the mouths of entitled Hollywood youth. Just once.

  19. Lorna says:

She is a pretty girl. Her looks are the type that will improve as she gets older. Her attitude is very smug. I suppose she feels that being related one one of Hollywood’s biggest stars automatically makes her a huge star, too. I remember watching her on UnFabulous and thinking she was cute, but no great talent.

  20. serena says:

    I totally hate her.
Just because I don’t see anything in her, not a good actress, not a beauty (far from that) and a brat too. Ugh.

  21. Diane says:

Just what we need, another major bitch.

  22. hmm says:

I met her once at work, and she just gave me the nastiest look from my head to my toes like she was sizing me up. It was kind of odd as I was just an intern going to get a drink. She did not give off a friendly vibe.

  23. Tiffany says:

Saw that Burberry Prossum jacket at Harrod’s and died over it. Comes in tan as well. And quilted ones, ahhh the stuff they are making right now makes me drool. Full coat porn. But I can’t see shelling out that much money for anything-I think about 10K. Hard to remember with all the eyeball popping prices in there.

  24. jinni says:

I think she’s rather plain looking honestly, especially when you compare her to her father in his youth, he was beautiful (check out “King of the Gypsies”).

Also, I don’t know what she’s talking about because anyone whose seen a Kate Hudson movie knows that she’s been playing a poor man’s Goldie Hawn in every role; except she lacks any kind of comedic chops of her mother.

  25. Kaiser says:

LMAO, I’m so glad you girls didn’t yell at me for this. Thank God! Now I can say it: Emma Roberts is smug little bitch, and I hope her career goes nowhere.

  26. Riley says:

yeah I love all the real life testimonials. Yikes, she sounds worse than the girl from glee.

  27. Vesper says:

Boring, entitled, smug, and PLAIN. If she looks like this after being photo shopped can u imagine how plain she is in real life? I’ve never seen any of her movies, but from what I’ve read she is just an okay actress. She doesn’t seem particularly intelligent either – she is going to start attending some unheard of college in the Fall. In general she sounds a lot like her over rated aunt.

  28. Newbie says:

From the sound of it, she seems dreadful. She’d better watch her attitude or no one will be willing to work with her. Especially when she hasn’t made much of a name for herself. Yikes.

  29. 6 says:

She definitely sounds a little smug. That hair color isn’t doing anything for her either. The brown hair looks much better for her.

  30. Eve says:

Entitled and smug? She’s Julia Roberts’s niece for crying out loud! I’d be really surprised if she wasn’t.

  31. samihami says:

I tend to think that a lot of folks are projecting their dislike for Julia Roberts onto this kid. I don’t get the smug vibe from her-just that she’s very young and she’s trying to come across as mature. I’ve never seen any of her movies, so I have no idea whether or not she can act, but she is a very pretty young woman.

  32. Sarah says:

remember when all of those twi-tards got really upset because she was being a bitch to Robert Pattinson? I don’t think she was being mean to him on purpose but that was just her natural effervenscence…

  33. Lisa says:

@samihami- Are you serious? There are dozens of ppl who’ve met her and they all say the same thing, she’s a major bitch. That has nothing to do with her aunt unless you realize that “bitch” runs in her family then yes I guess in a way we dislike her because she inherited the “bitch” gene from her aunt through her dad.

  34. Delta Juliet says:

    Oh.my.
I just read Lainey’s article, and yeah, she does not come off well!
She better have some talent to back that up because she’s nothing special to look at.
But then again, do you really need talent to be famous anymore? I think we all know the answer to that one.

  35. ordinarygirl86 says:

She’s pretty but she just doesn’t have IT the way Julia did. Yea Julia is an ‘all about me’ bitch but she had charisma. Emma just comes off spoiled and marginally talented…

  36. Isa says:

Agree with all the posters above who met her in real life. She does not come across as friendly and although nobody has a right to act like that, she is not talented, not strikingly pretty and is milking her famous aunt for her own exposure.
She is rumored to be bearding for Chace Crawford, which will also not help.

I was 18 when I saw Mystic Pizza and Pretty Woman and I will never forget how strikingly beautiful Julia was. She can never match up to that, ever!

  37. justez says:

    @ Kaiser, haha
I agree, she doesn’t have the career/talent to back up the attitude. And when you bring someone like Mia Wasikowska it’s hard to believe they’re the same age.

  38. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

I don’t think regardless means what she thinks it means.

  39. My Darling Pinkett says:

She does look a bit smug. I’ve never actually seen her in anything, so I have no idea about her acting. It’s funny how some people just rub you the wrong way and you don’t know why, and then you read their interviews or hear gossip about them and you’re given a legitimate reason. It’s like you know there’s a reason you don’t like them…and there it is!

Although she’s never rubbed me the wrong way because I know very little about her and I don’t see her face splashed around often. Lol. Some career she has! Valentine’s Day was supposed to be horrible, wasn’t it? She’s not all that pretty either. In every picture I’ve seen her in she looks average. Remember that cover of Vanity Fair she was on awhile back with Amanda Seyfried, Blake Lively, and Kristen Dullwart? Now don’t kill me for saying this, but Amanda and Blake looked like they belonged in that photo and Emma and Kristen so did not! I’m not a fan of any of them, but Emma and Kristen looked especially unremarkable in that.

I guess I’ll have to read an interview or two of hers to see just how entitled she is. Gotta say, though, naming Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Hudson as your role models does not make you look good OR smart.

  40. ctkat1 says:

Mia Wasikowska comparisons are unfair, because Mia is that rare specimen of young actress who has the talent, professionalism, and right attitude. Basically, Mia is going places.

Emma Roberts will probably always work, because her aunt has enough connections/goodwill in Hollywood to get her supporting roles, but she’s never going to get the type of reviews or roles that someone like Mia gets.

I’ve read several reports of Emma that say she is a total bitch.

  41. Liana says:

I met her once at work, and she just gave me the nastiest look from my head to my toes like she was sizing me up. It was kind of odd as I was just an intern going to get a drink. She did not give off a friendly vibe.

    ************

Dealt with her on “Hotel for Dogs.” Ugh.

Her (standing right next to the big ass bucket o’ waters as I am blocking out a shot for the director): “Get me a water, I’m thirsty.”
Me: “I’m sorry, I’m in the middle of doing something for Thor (Freudenthal, the director)”
Her: “I guess I didn’t say it loud enough. Get me a water. Now.”
Me: “Oh, I heard you. I’m just not engaging you.”

She IS quite pretty in person. Beautiful skin.

  42. original kate says:

seems like boring, smug and entitled run in that family.

  43. Camille says:

She comes off as a huge brat to me. @Liana, your story for some reason does not surprise me. At all.

I’d rather have KStew than this major a**hole in the making.

  44. Jayna says:

I think she came off poised and grounded. I guess it was just refreshing to see a young woman trying to learn and become better, instead of all the celubutards and celebutantes and even just regular girls running around with blownup lips and boob jobs by 18, probably couldn’t name the vice-president.

  45. Jayna says:

ordinarygirl86, I agree Julia had the “it” factor. Julia in Pretty Woman was magical. Julia was famous and, yet, she embodied the vulnerabilty of her character and charm and became that girl. She dazzled in that movie.

  46. MrsOdie2 says:

People under 20 really shouldn’t be allowed to speak publicly. Especially uneducated ones who grew up on movie sets. They always sound self-important and stupid.

  47. Quercus says:

I need to know more about Eric Roberts’ troubles! Somebody fill me in, please! I do remember he refused to talk about Julia in an interview I heard once.

  48. Venus says:

“Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Hudson have made names for themselves regardless of the fact that their parents were famous”

She means “despite the fact” not “regardless of the fact.” I hate that. And yes, Liz & Curmudgeon, the real truth is it is all BECAUSE of their famous parents.

Put me down for boring, entitled, smug and VAPID.

  49. Venus says:

@Vesper — Sarah Lawrence is actually a pretty well known & super expensive “hoity-toity” all girl’s college. It is small but ritzy & is known for its liberal arts program. Sound like the kind of place that will be great for her — “pay your fees, get your C’s,” if you know what I mean.

  50. kikay says:

i’m glad rob patz give it to her good when she was bitching on him on jay leno last year!good for you rob.what a smug little b***h.

  51. kikay says:

@Camille…. me too i’d rather have kstew than this girl,if kstew is good enough for lainey shes good enough for me.

  52. Cletus says:

I didn’t think she came off THAT badly in the piece… she’s a fetus, and fetuses rarely have anything intelligent to say for themselves. And, you know, it was an interview, they didn’t ask her for a political dissertation or her philosophical outlook on life. Kids say dumb shit, you know? At least she wears pants out in public and isn’t running around stealing everything that isn’t nailed down.

HOWEVER, if that get-me-a-water story is true, then someone should really look into buying a house to drop on her, STAT.

  53. almond says:

I thought she was really cute in Wild Child and that she did a great job playing on obnoxious brat. Now I find out she was just playing herself.

Oh, and K. Stewart may be a “woe is me” little brat, but I’ve never heard any rumors about her being anything but a professional on set.

  54. Liana says:

HOWEVER, if that get-me-a-water story is true, then someone should really look into buying a house to drop on her, STAT.

    ********

Oh, it’s true. But really, that entitlement thing is not uncommon. They just need to remember to give their orders to the correct person. A director assistant isn’t there for the actors, she/he is there to assist the director and pulling a DA in different diections can slow up filming. When I do PA work, I don’t mind the gofer crap, as long as they remember to say please and thank you.

  55. jhamz says:

… i just want to say that Emma is a great actress, and i can see her a good instrument for me…and i love her, she’s great in all her movies, how can someone called her a bitch if shes not? we can’t totally tell to a person that she’s a bitch if we didn’t know that person very well. I can say Emma Roberts is a very modest actress in her generation, not just like other child stars who turns their life miserable and in wrong directions.

For Emma: I really like you as an actress, well done! make more movies because i always want to watch you, ALWAYS! love your WILD CHILD movie…

  56. Cali says:

She’s really not that interesting enough or pretty enough to make a career w/o great acting ability (and that she does not have). Also you can totally tell (in other stuff I’ve seen/read about her) she thinks she’s fashionable and mature. No, your’re just boring.

  57. C says:

Emma Roberts is the worst actor I have ever seen in a movie. She literally cannot vary her tone or her facial features. I’m not saying she couldn’t do a local play, but that is all. I watched several movies with her in it, all with adequate story lines, but she just destroys every single credible moment.

Clearly she got her initial roles due to her Aunt, but I think she has gotten her later roles because she is very beautiful. She does have a great look, just not the talent to boot. I’d love to know what films she has been turned down for; guaranteed they’re by directors who were appalled by her singular performances

  58. allison says:

I have a couple friends that went to camp with her, and they thought she was a total bitch.

  59. Isaiah says:

I met her, and she is the biggest conceited, immature brat in the world. She is spoiled, and on set acts horribly. She yells at personell and complains all the time. She thinks everything is about her, and that shows. She is pretty, but she has the ugliest soul a person could have. Like my page on fb named “I hate Emma Roberts.” More people need to know how horrid she is…
