Shanna Moakler makes ad for PETA as vegetarian Travis Barker eats meat again

On Wednesday Travis Barker gave his first interview since surviving a plane crash that killed four out of six of the people on the plane. In it, Travis mentioned that after 25 years as a vegetarian he has started to eat meat again, saying that his doctors told him he needs the food protein to heal.

Ironically today PETA released a statement that Travis’ ex-wife Shanna Moakler has become a vegetarian and recorded a commercial for the animal rights organization. Though Travis and Shanna have had a very acrimonious relationship, she has been by his side throughout his entire hospitalization.

“There are so many good reasons not to eat meat, but for me, the well-being of my children is the most important,” says Moakler, who has also appeared in several films and on many TV shows, including CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Dancing With the Stars. “I want them to be healthy and also to understand that when they say ‘No!’ to meat, they’re saying ‘No!’ to animal cruelty. We talk about our pets, and I say, ‘You wouldn’t eat Biscuit, would you? Well, then let’s not eat any animal, O.K.?'”

Although Moakler originally went vegetarian out of concern for animals, the health benefits came as a pleasant surprise. “I don’t think I really realized what I was putting into my body and the actual effects that it was having on me, so now I feel so much healthier, and I have so much more energy, and foods taste better!”

The compassion for animals that Moakler is imparting to her children goes beyond the dinner table. She’s an ardent fur foe–she won several fur coats in various pageants but now plans to donate them to PETA to use in its campaign to educate the public about the cruelty of the fur industry.

The timing sure is suspicious. However PETA doesn’t give any indication of when Moakler shot the ad, and I seriously doubt she’s had time to do it since Travis’ plane crash. What I find especially interesting is Shanna’s statement that she feels healthier and has more energy. Of his decision to start eating meat again, Barker said, “‘I don’t regret it at all, I feel so much better.’” I guess it goes to show everyone’s body needs something different.

My first instinct when I saw this was, “Uh oh, they’re feuding again.” But I think the timing is just coincidental. It seems like Shanna and Travis have been getting along really well lately – not only has she been with him the entire time he’s been in the hospital, but she took a bus back to L.A. with him because he was too afraid to fly. I’m hoping they avoided any arguments and just ate a lot of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Protein-filled and totally awesome.

Travis needs to do whatever it takes to survive and get back to normal.

I know a lot of vegetarians who suddenly started eating meat after about 8 years. Their bodies suddenly needed that particular type of protein. Which is why I rarely had a go at anyone over eating meat – just in case I went back to it.
(On a side note, you can be just as unhealthy as a veggie as a meat eater if your diet isn’t balanced. But not having a load of antibiotics at every meal is a relief when I need to rely on them when I’m sick).

The community will be relieved to know I’ll stay out of this one 🙂

Just everyone eat what your body needs and stay healthy!

After being through what he has, Travis Barker can eat any damn thing he wants as far as I’m concerned.

  4. Jess Doherty says:

Eating meat is important for your strength. Travis has already broken bones (while drumming!!) as a result of his vegetarian eating habits.

  5. Mairead says:

Errr Jess, I’m pretty sure that it’s calcium that helps with the bones – not chicken.
(apparently the calcium in animal products is actually fairly difficult to absorb, but it’s still better than nothing).

As for strength; I can lift heavy boxes and move sizeable pieces of furniture without my bones splintering into dust, so I’m pretty certain I’m as strong as or even stronger than most women my age.

If the doctors told him to eat meat so his burns would heal quicker, so be it. Personally, I think the guy deserves a nice cheeseburger after what he’s been through.

    😀

Does anyone else think it’s ironic the pet is named Biscuit?

I never knew Travis was a fellow veg-head! I certainly don’t think less of him now – your diet is your own god damn business – and one should always do what’s right for their own wellbeing!

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

That has to be up there with the most stupid, illogical comments ever made in defence of being a vegetarian. All for people making their own choices but why are so many celeb vegetarians (particularly ones that endorse PETA) so idiotically clueless and simple-minded?

She’s a dunce but she always has great hair.

Can’t eating meat after such a long time as a vegetarian have some bad side-effects?

  12. vdantev says:

It can make you sick with stomach cramps, diarrhea etc. until your body re-adjusts.

Shanna needs to take out the gum before opening her mouth for a picture, that’s for damn sure! I went veggie for a year and decided to eat chicken again a couple of years ago. I’m about to go back to veggie, just need to think about where I can get enough protein so I don’t crave meat. It’s a hard diet if you actually enjoy eating meat though.

Veggie-meats, soy milk, nut milks, tofu, soy cheese, low fat milk, yogurt and cheese, nuts and soy nuts, nut butters, eggs and egg whites.

    Here’s a table I found too :

Hi nice post, i have come across your site once before when searching for something so i was just wondering something. I love your theme, would it happen to be a free one i can download, or is it a custom one you had made? In a few months i may get my own domain, but i don’t know how to setup themes so i don’t mind paying someone to make me a nice one and set it all up. Do you know any good WordPress designer companies, thanks for your help. 🙂
