Emily Deschanel announces her pregnancy: how will this affect ‘Bones’?

wenn3258629

First off, congratulations to Emily Deschanel! She just announced (through her rep) that she’s pregnant and due later this year. The baby-daddy is her husband, David Hornsby, who many know from his role as Rickety Cricket on It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia. They were married last year and they seem genuinely happy together. I always enjoy Emily because A) She’s not a famewhore, and I get the impression that she lives a very quiet, very private life and she just happens to be on a hit show and B) I love her on Bones, and I love that she loves being on television, and she’s not trying to do the movie star thing. So… this news makes me really happy, and I truly hope she has a healthy and happy pregnancy.

***************SPOILERS FOR THIS SEASON OF BONES********

Now, I have to totally geek out on everyone, and people who aren’t Bones fans, you can just move on to another post because none of this will mean anything. Also: I get that people are no longer fans of the show now that David Boreanaz has been outed as a womanizing skeeze, but I’m such a fan of the show, I kind of disregard his personal skeeziness. Okay, when this current season of Bones started, I thought it sucked, big-time, and that the whole “Booth goes Afghanistan, Bones goes to Wherever” story line was so, so dumb. I toyed with the idea of dropping the series from my must-watch list, but I’m glad I stuck with it, because this season got really, really good around Christmas. I actually liked Hannah (Booth’s journalist girlfriend), I liked her with Booth, and I liked that Hannah and Bones became so friendly and tight. Everything changed for me with that episode where Bones overly identifies with the dead surgeon, and that hot helicopter pilot who was in love with the surgeon. The scene in the car between Bones and Booth where she’s crying and asking him if she missed her chance… yeah, I was crying too. And I loved that Booth shut her down.

And then it got even better! Booth proposing to Hannah, Hannah turning him down, and then all of his sadness and bitterness… I truly didn’t see that situation playing out as it did. And then the last episode where Bones and Booth are stuck in the elevator and they talk about sex and possibly getting it on and Bones showing some self-awareness about her own “resilience”. I know the writers are playing with us, as they have done for years. But I really enjoyed it anyway, because it felt like Bones is making the effort to develop and change.

So, here are my questions: will the writers put Emily’s pregnancy into the show? If they do, will it be Booth’s baby? If it’s Booth’s baby, won’t they have to get started on the sexual relationship really, really soon? Will they show it? Because I’m still invested in that junk. I want to see those two characters get dirty with each other. For. Real.

Oh, and how frigging long is Angela going to gestate with that tiny little bump?

I like her and her sister!

  2. searching4grace says:

OH!! Spoiler Alert needed!!!!!! I’m so freaking behind on Bones that I missed that entire last paragraph! I watched the first couple of shows of the season and got depressed with it, and have been putting off the other shows. That said, congratulations to Emily! Completely adore her.

  3. Enny says:

I met her once, at a party, before she was famous. Very sweet and down to earth. I’m so happy for her! But I’m totally with you, I hope it doesn’t ruin the show.

  4. Jane Q. Doe says:

Emily and her sister seem like pretty grounded, groovy chicks. Best wishes to her on the baby!
As for Bones, I wasn’t much of a fan of Hannah (it was the actress, not the character for me), but I’ve been enjoying the show this season. But I’ll bet they don’t do a “Bones is pregnant” storyline – it would seem rushed, plus they’ll already have done it with Angela & Hodgins. If they plan to have her deliver by the season finale you’re right – the costumers need to up Michaela Conlin’s padding ASAP!

  5. Kaiser says:

Oh, okay! I’ll put a spoiler up there.

  6. K says:

That is such amazing news! I am a fan of Emily for the same reasons you listed. And this season was SO worth the Muluku/Afghanistan BS. I love the chemistry between her and David (and he’s still a huge crush of mine, even with the skeeviness) and how they portray their characters. The last series I loved so much for the character interaction was Firefly. If they write her pregnancy into the series, they could either go the route of the sexual relationship or go back to when Bones asked Booth to donate his sperm prior to the brain tumor. It’ll be interesting to see what they decide to do. PLEASE PLEASE be the sex! That will be the hottest thing ever.

  7. Maddie says:

I’m thinking that they might write it into the show because at one point she was considering using Booth sperm to make a bambino, so they might go that route.

I have to agree with finding out what a azz-hattery David Boreanaz turned out to be had me not watching the show for a while but I tuned back in because I love this show (I only watch a handful of show).

Plus I too cried when Bones asked if she missed her chance, they do have a potent chemistry between them, so it was kind of a shocker when he came back from the war zone with woman in tow.

I didn’t think I would like Hannah but she turned out to be a nice woman.

  8. EdithP says:

Bones fan here, too. I’m very happy for ED, I do wonder how they will spin it for the show.

Even those David B is a skeez, I still love Booth. I just pretend that other stuff didn’t happen, and I want Bones & Booth to hook up. I never really liked Hannah, so I’m glad she’s gone. : )

  9. Katie says:

I’m also into this show, although I find myself less interested this season. But the success of the show to me has always been the quirky characters and the chemistry between, and that remains. Happy for Emily! I like her too. As for Boreanz, years ago, like 2002ish, a friend of mine ended up at a party at his house (her friend was the niece of some bigshot producer or something). She said he was really nice and took the time to talk to her and her friend and welcome them (in a non-skeezy way) even though they clearly weren’t in the industry and weren’t playboy model tops. So I always have that thought of him in mind.

I hated Hannah. I like the actress in other parts I’ve seen her in. But I hated Hannah.

  10. GradStudentEatingHotPockets says:

OMG…I love Bones. And I cried during that episode too where Bones is crying. I hope she and Booth have a kid together, uggghh!

  11. Mollyb says:

The thing I didn’t like about Hannah was the casting. She’s supposed to play this courageous, been-everywhere, done-everything reporter, which is a good fit for Booth. But then they cast this girl who looked like a nineteen year old cheerleader. Why, why, why couldn’t they cast an age-appropriate woman for that role?

  12. Kaiser says:

Aw, all of this Hannah-hate! I liked the character, I liked the actress. I thought they made her into the journalist-version of Bones. Smart, beautiful, brave, honest. I appreciated it.

  13. LadyBert62 says:

Wow – that black dress is truly ugly. She has a beautiful face and eyes and I think this hairdo is not flattering at all.

Aside from my two shallow comments above, I have not watched the series recently and might watch it again when there are reruns for a day long event and I am stuck in the house doing chores – other than that I dont watch the series mostly because it has turned into a soap opera and not an interesting anthropological-mystery involving bones.

  14. is this even true? wasn’t this announced on April 1st which makes this a joke?

  15. TQB says:

I’m not a dedicated Bones watcher. I catch it once and a while – and even I’m annoyed by Angela’s tiny bump. COME ON.

Also, this was announced yesterday – not on April Fools.

  16. Lindy says:

I am a big fan of Bones, and even though DB’s skeezy behavior put me off for awhile, I couldn’t stay away. I totally cosign everything you said about the season and the way the characters are developing. And I’m happy for Emily!

  17. sharylmj says:

I love this show and agree with the comments above with Bones crying and I liked Hannah and loved that she said no to marrying Booth. This baby will have to be his on the show one way or another. Hopefully they will finally sleep together.. but that might wreck it. we shall see…. And YES when is Angela going to have that baby???

  18. Lizzyxo says:

TVline did a spoiler yesterday, the last episode of this season is, The Change in the Game, and alludes to something maybe sparking.

  19. rkintn says:

I’ve loved this show from the beginning..and I only watched it because of DB lol I absolutely LOVED him as Angel! As for the skeevy stuff…you have to remember there are three sides to every story..his, hers and the truth.

That said…I wish Emily the absolute best for her, her hubby and the baby! I also hope they work it in for it to be Bones’ and Booth’s baby, somehow:) That would be really awesome!

  20. jane16 says:

We love Bones, but have found the current season annoying, sorry, I couldn’t find the Hannah character believable at all. We love Emily, I have met her several times and she is truly beautiful. Not like most of these famous women who look good only when photoshopped. She always looks glowing and happy and has those gorgeous eyes. We keep watching Bones for her and Angela, and the other characters, and try to shut out Davids douchery. Which is much worse, btw, than ever gets out to the tabloids, I’m sorry to say. So unnecessary. My brother looks like him, but has never cheated on his wife. Why do all actors think they have to do this shit?

  21. Renee says:

I think Hannah was good for Boothe in the way that it will make him appreciate Bones more. It’s like one of those required relationships everyone has.
But holy moly, I just have no idea how they’re going to do it. I figure they’ll just hide her behind bodies and a giant lab coat. JLD was able to pull it off on Seinfeld twice if I recall. No laundry baskets required.
And seriously, Angela should call Katie H and get the appropriate pillow size. They’re probably numbered like in Little Otik.

  22. Renee says:

Also. My love of Boothe trumps the Boreanaz scandal. It’s the first time I’ve ever been able to look past that kind of thing.

  23. bluhare says:

Another Bones fan. I too loved Bones’ “impervious is not strong because you can’t get in, but strength is breaking down the wall” speech, and I thought it was really lovely.

Either Sully’s coming back, or she and Booth do it.
